    Book Description

The obsessive reference for every baseball nut, THE TEAM-BY-TEAM ENCYCLOPEDIA OF MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL is a comprehensive, original, devour-it-like-salted-peanuts single-volume encyclopedia that marries history and statistics and delivers them team by team. Organizing by teams gives the wide view—how do the Murderer’s Row Yankees compare to the Big Red Machine? The long view—what team has given the Red Sox the most trouble over the last 100 years? And the hidden view—name the team that went through all the 1990s without a Gold Glove winner. It’s how the game is played, and now, finally, it’s presented in the way the game is best understood.

Created by baseball historian Dennis Purdy, a true buff’s buff, THE TEAM-BY-TEAM ENCYCLOPEDIA offers the history of every existing major league baseball franchise told through narrative, bios, anecdotes, photographs, and the most comprehensive team statistics ever assembled in a single book. Every year’s record, standing, attendance, and primary starting lineup for each of baseball’s 30 franchises. Top-10 leader lists for every major category (and some minor ones), plus all-time won-loss records versus all opponents. All the awards—MVP, Rookie of the Year, Cy Young, Gold Glove. Manager records. Post-season records. Even retired uniform numbers. But the stats are just the beginning—each chapter contains entertaining thumbnail biographies of every franchise’s key players, recalling, for example, how the game’s greatest shortstop, Honus Wagner, was ecruited when spotted throwing rocks across a river. And sprinkled throughout are spicy team facts, bizarre anecdotes, statistical anomalies, and little-known gems—like what Babe Ruth said to Lou Gehrig after hitting his “called shot” homerun in the 1932 World Series.

    5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!!.......2007-03-29

Here one thick volume (1166 pages) compiles most every historical fact a baseball fan might want about each of the major league franchises from the original teams to those expansion additions. The book is nicely organized with a written review of each team followed by top team and individual statistics both traditional and newer. These statistics are shown both for team history as well as by season. Also included are the yearly starting lineups both hitting and pitching as well as the list of past managers. Each chapter ends with written comments about that teams best players. A great reference.

      Book Description

From exploits on the field, to machinations in the front office, to data on the cities where they play, the Encyclopedia of Major League Baseball Clubs presents the team history of each of the MLB teams. Intelligent, in-depth essays provide social and economic histories of each club that go beyond the recounting of team glories or failures year by year. Team origins, annual campaigns, and players and managers all figure into the story, but so do owners, financiers, politicians, neighborhoods and fans. Teams are also looked at as business enterprises, with special attention given to labor issues like the reserve clause and free agency, as well as stadium construction and financing. Social and political issues are covered as well, including racism and integration, ethnic makeup of fans and players, gambling, liquor sales, and Sunday play. National events, like World War I, World War II, the Great Depression and the Cold War, and their impact on the national pastime, are also brought into the picture where they are relevant. Media coverage and broadcasting rights are discussed, as is the great influence the flood of media money has had on the sport. As America's sport, baseball reflects not just our ideas and beliefs about competition, it also reflects our national and regional identities. Readers will be able to find useful information about:
    • Important players, managers, owners
    • Community relations/charity work
    • Business and labor issues (television income, free agency)
    • Race relations
    • Baseball/Sports economics (including stadium construction, team relocations)
    • Teams in local and national culture (Fenway Park, Wrigley Field as local icons, Yankees as a national team) Every essay is signed, and concludes with suggested readings and a bibliography. The work is illustrated, has a comprehensive bibliography, and is thoroughly indexed.

                  W. Haden Blackman preys on our more eccentric curiosities with his fact-filled Field Guide to North American Monsters. Even the monster-shy will find it hard not to smile when they read sidebars such as "What does bigfoot eat?" (Everything from acorns and honey to tadpoles and salmon.) Seriously and exhaustively researched, this guide covers more than 100 monsters in the following categories: hairy humanoids, lake monsters and sea serpents, flying monsters, dwarves and giants, cryptid animals (animals heretofore unknown to science), beastmen and beastwomen ("humanoids" with numerous animalistic features), supernatural monsters, and the not readily classifiable enigmatic entities such as the bogeymen, phantom felines, and the infamous Mad Gasser of Mattoon.

Gleaned from Native American legends, American folklore, and modern sightings, this is the first-ever collection cataloging the vast expanse of bizarre creatures inhabiting North America. Laid out like a field guide to birds or mammals, the book helps the reader become familiar with each monster through photos (when available), drawings, and each creature's vital statistics: distinguishing features, range and habitat, diet, the source reporting the monster, and a rating of the likelihood of spotting each creature in the wild.

An avid monsterologist, the author offers useful suggestions for pursuing this rare field of study, including advice for how to behave during a monster encounter and a thorough sample questionnaire to use when interviewing monster eyewitnesses. --Kathryn True

                  4 out of 5 stars Urban Legends.......2006-10-18

A decent overview of America's monster phenoms. Not a whole lot on any one subject, but makes for entertaining reading. Everything from Bigfoot to creatures totally unheard of by most. Not bad.

                  4 out of 5 stars Interesting.........2005-06-22

I find this field guide exceedingly interesting, if not frightening. Blackmen tirelessly explains the characteristics of different monsters with factual evidence, pictures, and drawings to create a definite page turner. However, I find a large portion of this book to be chock full of urban legends and myths that simply aren't true. For instance, Blackmen introduces the fact that Earwigs burrow into the ears to eat brains along with many other monsters consuming humans in some way, but this sounds way too farfetched itself to believe. And from what I see, there are no documentations to prove that Bogeyman also exist (confused with child murderers in this book), along with man-eating deer women. However, I find this book very well put together and informative if you can pick out the factual evidence, and is wll worth the money. A definite buy.

5 out of 5 stars STOP WINING AND OPEN UP YOUR MIND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-02-26

I've read some nasty reviews here, but rest assured that this book is one of the most organized and interesting you'll ever read on the subject. Personally, I love this book because of the way Blackman combines supernaturalism and cryptozoology into a realistic zoological field guide. Plus, the tips on how to hunt monsters give you something to do on boring days. I can't get enough of the enigmatic monsters in this marvelous book, and I really think you should give it a chance. So open up your mind, open up this book, and let it work its magic. Remember, it may come in handy some day...

                  3 out of 5 stars pretty silly.......2003-06-30

If you want to learn about crptozoology and look for the truth then this is not for you. While it had some pretty good photos and some ok story's.There was A lot of really stupid stuff like the little section of the likelihood of encountering one of these creatures. And some of the so called monsters like the boogey man,I mean please can't the author take things A little more serios.

                  5 out of 5 stars entertaining.......2002-07-06

This book is entertaining in that it's humoristic but it also provides some nice insights into Native American as well as local folklore and decent cryptozoology/paranormal info.No it's not Keel,Coleman,or Sanderson, but it's worth reading.

4 out of 5 stars Short but pretty good, you'll learn some things.......2005-06-11

At only 46 pages this book isn't very long, coat pocket (not shirt pocket) sized but does have some good information I hadn't seen in some of the bigger Bison books Amazon sells.
The descriptive section, pages 12-24 had the most valuable information about the Bison themselves, although the page on viewing them today (p.38) did give some hints on what to do or not do when watching them.
Actually the worst part of the book (other than not really making it clear just how unsure estimates of original herd size really are) was on p.32 describing the Sharp's Buffalo rifle as having a .45 caliber 30 inch barrel capable of hitting at a quarter of a mile. From my reading I've read that the Sharps came in several calibers and barrel lengths and most hunters tried to get close in for their shots. Other than that even this page was good.
There's a map showing you where to find public viewing herds but it has only the vaguest of directions on how to get to them, no addresses, phone numbers or websites.
Short, a little bit pricey, but you will learn a little something.

4 out of 5 stars Short but sweet........2002-04-12

Is a total of 46-informative pages. For the price it is defintely worth the read. Learned a few new facts I didn't learn before.

                  5 out of 5 stars Need buffalo/bison information?.......2001-12-16

This book was the most useful of the recent pile of buffalo/bison books I purchased. Biologically, the book gave me all the answers I sought. As a bonus, it included history and lore of the buffalo/bison of the Old West. If you're looking for a book to help you learn about these giant animals, something to help with a school report, or just a great field guide to add to your existing library, this is the book.

I'll admit that this is a good "book" (pamphlet) for those just getting started in this subject.

It contains the most popular stories, however, remember that if you are reading this... You are on the Internet! These stories can be easily obtained in fifteen minutes by typing "Bigfoot" into any search engine.

Along with other quotes lifted from other (and better) writers on the subject, ie; John Green... It is plagarism at best.

Sorry Dave, had to be honest!

To the author's credit though, I have to say, the drawings are nice!

Very small collection of the most popular and previously recorded events. Save your $5 and try something else a bit more informative..like Dr. Krantz's Big Footprints or the old On The Track of Sasquatch.

3 out of 5 stars Small But Informative.......2000-05-08

The thing that makes this book unusual is the inclusion of maps of where Sasquatch has been sighted. Not much new information will be found for anyone seriosuly interested in the Sasquatch. A small synopsis of the pros and cons about Sasquatch is included as well as a method of diecerning their tracks from those of bears as well as a list of sighting in California, Oregon, and Washington, including "Jacko", the only Sasquatch to ever have been captured. The small price is worth it for the maps, but there is really nothing new here.

This guide dispels the myth that grizzly bears are the ferocious attackers some people believe them to be. Instead, it offers a comprehensive guide to acting safely when encountering them in grizzly country and to the pleasures of observing them in their natural habitats. Now in its second printing, with correction of a couple earlier errors, the Field Guide to the Grizzly Bear covers 500,000 years of this species' existence in just 48 pages. As the author, I can appreciate how difficult it is to write about so much in so few words. The field guide series by Sasquatch had already set excellent precedents in earlier works on the orca and bald eagle by the time I agreed to compose a guide to the grizzly. The basic requirement is to get it down briefly, and to get it right. I think it works very well as a brief introduction to the history, natural history, troubled present and risky future for one of nature's great creations.

5 out of 5 stars Vashon Island memories of a Monster Clam.......2000-09-21

Growing up on Vashon Island an island just west of Seattle I have such fond memoroies of going with my Dad and Mom, older brother and later on friends, to dig this wonderful monster clam at the Burton Beach.

This book is a book that every Washington State citizen with pride should own and those of us who live out of state should own and share with our local libraries. The Washington state native americans named this clam and Goeduck means "dig deep" which is what you have to do to get this gem of a clam.

I have a pic on my website that shows just how hard it is. In fact digging goeducks is akin to hunting the big buck or elk. Hard to do and you don't always get your clam as they dig down faster than some can dig.

                    Great book!
