One of Don and Audrey Wood's popular masterpieces in a board book format. How fast are you? Ages: 6 mos + Manufacturer: Marlon Creations

"I'm as quick as a cricket, I'm as slow as a snail. I'm as small as an ant, I'm as large as a whale." Parents and teachers choose this big square book for the message of self-confidence. Toddlers love it for the singsong phrases and Don Wood's large, silly, endearing illustrations, which feature a boy mimicking different kinds of animals. At one point, he is pictured sipping tea formally with a fancy poodle ("I'm as tame as a poodle") and on the very next page he is swinging through trees ("I'm as wild as a chimp"). Whether brave or shy, strong or weak, in the end the young boy celebrates all different, apparently contradictory parts of himself. With a confident grin, he lifts his arms up and declares, "Put it all together and you've got ME!" (Baby to age 6)

test of time.......2007-09-05
This book made its way to our home from my in-laws' home. It was my husband's book when he was a child, and now it is our daughters FAVORITE book.. It is such a great book, so much fun to read, and she's only 13 months old so it's nice to read a non-board book for a change! I am now looking for other stories by this author.
Great.......2007-05-12
One of the best illustrated books for young children. I read it to my children and now my grandchildren love it.
Big Fun.......2007-04-26
Kids love it. This is a consistent 'go to' for my my infant daughter, and we enjoy reading it to her too. Big, bright, and imaginative pictures and a warm little poem. The premise is simple: a child imagines that he/she has all of the superlative attributes of several different animals ('quick as a cricket'). I don't know if this is considered a classic (yet), but I think it's a must for the kids' shelves.
A favorite book!.......2007-03-08
Let's be honest....Don't we as parents dread reading some books to our kids?? (If you are like me, some end up 'disappearing' after a while!) Well, this is one book that I enjoyed reading as much as my dds enjoyed listening to it! The pictures on each page draw you in, and the dialog is fun to read! (I had fun changing my voice around according to the animal on each page!) Though my dds are almost teenagers, we still can't part with this book!
Love this book.......2007-01-17
My kids enjoyed this book and, as a speech therapist, I love using this book for language lessons for ages 3-7. The younger ones enjoy the story and get in some practice using opposites. With the older ones, I have them practice using comparisons (I'm as ___ as a ____)after hearing the story. I've even used it in a K-1 Sunday School class for teaching the idea of how a person feels differently at different times.

rare- a new classic!.......2006-11-10
This book is a rare find: a picture book that successfully moralizes and charms at the same time. The siblings in the book, who interact almost entirely via the pictures, manage to be endearing and feel realistic at the same time. Plus they have an entertaining sense of mischief. It is a big hit in our house, even with a three and five year old who would rather play superheroes than read stories most of the time, much to my own chagrin.

Tough Crowd was Very Pleased.......2006-11-10
My neice is 4 and loves her books. My sister & husband have a tough time finding good ones, but agreed that this book was terrific. It used the word, "creative," a lot - which was just introduced to my neice's vocabulary. They really don't like a lot of childrens books, but loved this one. Good for bright kids!
Wonderful!.......2006-05-18
This book has it all - wit, beautiful illustrations and a great message all presented in a format that will appeal to children of all ages, as well as their parents. Check out Lisa Brown's board books in the Baby Be of Use series too.

When Alfred, a supposedly unlovable pug (or so the cat tells him) meets a new neighbor dog through the solid fence, he can't help himself: "My name is Alfred," he says. "I'm a golden retriever." As long as he can keep the fence between himself and Rex, Alfred is relaxed enough to get to know his new buddy. They share many likes (sleeping in the sun, dog food, and scratching) and dislikes (baths and the vet), and spend hours chatting. But then one day Rex decides to dig a hole under the fence so he can come over to Alfred's side. It's the moment of truth--will Rex find Alfred unlovable when he sees him face to face?
Dan Yaccarino's story about real friendship (and the danger of shaky self esteem) will strike a chord with anyone who has ever told a teeny tiny white lie (or a whopper) on the playground just to boost his or her image a bit. Alfred suffers from a common malady: he believes anything others tell him. But on the final page, readers will rejoice to see Alfred and his pal Rex peeking mischievously over the windowsill at the naughty cat, who is obviously flustered to see that her victim isn't going to take it any more. Yaccarino (illustrator of Circle Dogs, by Kevin Henkes, I Love Going Through This Book, by Robert Burleigh, and many others), whose stylized gouache on watercolor paper illustrations are recognizable a mile away, manages to make this pug positively lovable despite what any feline might say. (Ages 4 to 7) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
Alfred the pug dog thinks hes unlovable. Other dogs make fun of his tiny legs and funny face. The cat and the parrot and even the goldfish tease him. Then a new dog, Rex, moves in next door. Because Alfred wants a friend so badly, he tells Rex a little fib about himself. But what will happen when Rex learns the truth? Will he find Alfred unlovable too? Dan Yaccarino has created a charming story about a little pug who learns the true meaning of friendship.
Customer Reviews:
You can only find acceptance among those who are like you?.......2007-09-26
As a strong supporter of anti-bias education, I really, really wanted to like this book. I now wish that I had read the two negative reviews because, unfortunately, I share their opinion. The message that I take from this book is that if you are different, you can only find acceptance among those who think and look just like you. So much for diversity! I'm reluctant to share this book with my kids but may give it a try anyway since it could provide them with an opportunity for critical thinking.
A Most Adorable Book.......2007-09-20
I have loved pugs since I was a child and now that I have children (and a pug) of my own, this book was simply perfect for my family. It teaches the beauty and value of diversity and of accepting yourself inspite of the way others may treate you (which is a plus since I have Asian children living in a predominately white region). Also, the puggies are just so cute!!! This book is a must for any parent or pug lover.
Unloveable - is completely loveable!!.......2007-07-24
My daughter received this as a gift and it is such a wonderful book! We read it probably once a week and it does not get old. Perfect for anyone who has a pug, loves a pug or any other dog that many consider "so ugly they're cute".
A sweet, good book for little ones and adults........2007-01-24
If you like pugs and know them, this book is especially sweet. All the things that a pug-lover finds (or learns to find) endearing are highlighted as "unlovable" characteristics in one lonely little pug, until he finds someone just like him. It's a sweet book that could be very helpful in teaching kids to appreciate what they've got, but to appreciate it in others, too.
LOVABLE.......2007-01-10
This is such a sweet book for all ages! Especially if you are a Pug lover!

Book Description
Kidogo is sure he’s the tiniest creature on earth. All the other animals are so much bigger than he is. Kidogo sets out on a journey—through the woodlands, over the plains, down to the river—to see if he can find an animal smaller than he is. Is it possible that Kidogo is exactly the right size after all? Heartwarming illustrations and a gentle story will inspire and reassure young children who are just starting to find their own way in a big world.
Book Description
In the grasslands of Africa, a group of young animals think they know all about the crocodile who swims in the river beneath their school. He is the most ferocious creature on earth . . . or is he? When the animals try painting portraits of him, they learn there is no one way to see anything, even a crocodile. In this heartwarming tale, author and illustrator Eva Montanari makes abstract concepts easy to understand, bringing them vividly to life. With age-appropriate text and gorgeous illustrations, The Crocodile's True Colors uses adorable animals and a captivating, yet simple plot to draw children into learning about perception and art. A true delight for story lovers of all ages!
Customer Reviews:
RECOMMENDED by LIBRARY MEDIA CONNECTION.......2003-01-25
The following review appeared in the January 2003 issue of LIBRARY MEDIA CONNECTION:
Even young children will come to understand various styles of art, including Expressionism, Cubism, Futurism, Abstractionism, and Dada, as they follow the artwork of a school full of African animals.... This is a clever way of helping children understand how art styles work, and art teachers will appreciate having it.... The author's effective watercolor illustations help children understand artistic variations. RECOMMENDED.

What's bigger than a pig?
You may well wonder. Fortunately, Douglas Florian and a very big, very pink pig have all the answers. A cow is bigger than a pig. A car is bigger than a cow. A truck is bigger than a car. And the universe? Well...

Book Description
On his first trip into the world, a baby baboon meets a very slow turtle and concludes that the world is slow. But then, as his mother takes him farther afield, he sees much more: he watches a hungry crocodile, a thundering herd of elephants, a swift gazelle, a rhinoceros. He feels the heat of a fire, the softness of grass, the warmth of the sun. Throughout the day, everything he experiences expands his understanding, and when night falls, he has seen with his own eyes that the world is a big and varied place.
With its simple, rhythmic text and bold, impressionistic jungle pictures, Baboon is a book to share with children as they explore their own new worlds.
Customer Reviews:
BABOON, BY KATE BANKS.......2007-01-10
An engaging theme of discovering that the world is more varied than first experiences would have you believe suffers from a very dull palette. 'The muddy greens olives and browns may be true to a Baboon's forest world but lack the contrast to engage a young child. Even a brushfire is muted.
This book was a dissapointment compared to Close Your Eyes by Kate Banks with the same ilustrator Georg Hallensleben. Both stories are soothing and engaging, providing the rare developing narrrative to be found in picture books for the very young. Mother to child invokes imagination in Close Your Eyes and investigating reality in Baboon. However, in Close Your Eyes abundant blue sky sets off the orange, black-striped little tiger, the greens are bright, and the dreams conjured up by the tiger mother burst with color and surprising details.Even a rainy mountian landscape is engaging. Nature is not at all dreary.
Baboon Butts and More!.......2004-06-17
In one word, wow! I purchased this book in the hopes of finding a good children's book, but boy was I surprised when I found a collection of lovely paintings, drawings, and pressed art made from the hind quarters of various baboon species. What a find!
