Book Description

With the research summarized in this monumental two volume treatise, Santiago Ramon y Cajal founded modern neuroscience and thus joined Darwin and Pasteur as the leading biologists of the 19th century. Starting around 1887, Cajal refined a neurological staining method developed almost 15 years earlier by the Italian histologist Camillo Golgi, and applied it first to relatively orderly parts of the nervous systems like the cerebellum, spinal cord, and retina. The conclusions he drew about the organization of neural circuits were, however, diametrically opposed to those advocated by Golgi, spurring an acrimonious debate that lasted well after the two shared the Nobel Prize in 1906. Early on, Cajal concluded that neural circuits are made up of individual units or nerve cells and interact by way of contact, whereas Golgi believed that such circuits are formed by a reticulum or net of contiguous nerve cells. Cajal was the first to see how neurons interact in the brain, laying the foundation for what came to be known as the neuron doctrine. His second great contribution was the ability to predict the direction of information flow in neural circuits based strictly on morphological criteria: dendrites and soma form the input side of a neuron while the axon forms its output side. This became known as the functional polarity hypothesis. Using these two foundation stones, Cajal went on to analyze systematically all parts of the mammalian nervous system, along with selected parts in all classes of vertebrates. A synthesis of that work, this volume, which is accompanied by over 1,000 original illustrations, is based almost entirely on personal observation and offers a wealth of factual, historical, and theoretical information.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A neuroscientific magnum opus.......2007-09-10

Bad printing and binding should not overcloud the fact that this book containing the complete works of Ramon Y Cajal deserves no less than 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars great translation - shoddy book.......2007-02-07

This is a superb translation of a genuine classic in Neuroscience. Unfortunately, my copy has about 20 pages in ramdom positions and the binding is falling apart. Caveat emptor.

    Book Description

Santiago Ramón y Cajal (1852-1934) is widely thought of as the founder of modern neuroscience; and his work is more frequently cited than that of any other scientist in the field. In this seminal book, Cajal summarized for a broad audience the modem cellular view of brain organization. This clear, direct, and accurate translation provides an excellent introduction to Cajal's work, making accessible for the first time the ideas that led Cajal to favor the neuron doctrine that revolutionized neuroscience and won for him (with his rival, Camillo Golgi) the Nobel Prize in medicine in 1906.

New Ideas on the Structure of the Nervous System in Man and Vertebrates presents the histological evidence for the laws governing the form and connections of nerve cells. This work and the principles that emerged from it formed the cornerstone for our current understanding of how the nervous system is organized. The book also presents in simplified form the ideas contained in Cajal's famous survey of vertebrate neurohistology, Histologie du Systeme Nerveux de l'Homme et des Vertébrés, unquestionably the most important book ever published in neuroanatomy, and which to this day has not been translated and published in English because of its extraordinary length.

Neely Swanson is a scholar of romance languages. Larry W. Swanson is Senior Member of the Salk Institute, Adjunct Professor in the Department of Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego, and Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute.

        Book Description

The third volume and the other two volumes (Volume 1 available, Volume 2 due december 1999) offer the scientific community the works and thoughts of Santiago Ramón y Cajal by the faithful rendition of the original Spanish version of the Texture of the Nervous System of Man and the Vertebrates (1899–1904), with additional facts contained in the French translation (1909–1911). These non-English versions are being quoted an average of 200 times yearly in the scientific literature. The collection will represent the “definitive Cajal” to be used by scientists and scholars interested in the original thoughts of probably the most prominent neuroscientist of all times. Unique features of the present work include: • Only authorized English translation of the original Spanish text, adhering as much as possible to the letter, with correction of the obvious errors already predicted by Cajal in his Preface. • Added facts appearing in the French version, with correction of old as well as new errors, the latter probably due to inaccuracies in translating into French some nuances of the Spanish language. • Uniform of nomenclature according to contemporary scientific English. • Annotations on Cajal’s changing concepts over time, the elucidation of certain structures that do not have present day equivalents, and explanations of the many symbols appearing in illustrations but not mentioned in the corresponding original legends. • Most illustrations are reproductions of Cajal’s original art work, still extant at the Cajal Museum in Madrid, with cross references to figure numbers of the Spanish and French versions. • Citations are given by author and year in the text, with an alphabetical list at the end of the volume, completed and corrected for accuracy against original publications. • Taxonomy glossary of species appearing in the text, with present scientific names, and their colloquial English counterparts. In sum, the collection represents the “definitive Cajal” to be used by scientists and scholars interested in the original writings of probably the most prominent neuroscientist of all times.

English Vocabulary Quick Reference takes an innovative approach to word roots. To start with, there's the "Primary Root Index"--a list of 260 essential word roots (including prefixes and suffixes), with definitions, language origin (Latin or Greek), and the dictionary page number where it's featured. It's a handy, easily accessible "a-" to "zyg-" list, but the unusual quality of the reference lies in its dictionary. Color-coded (red for common words such as are likely to appear on SATs, blue keywords to highlight succinct definitions), the dictionary presents more than 7,000 words based on those roots. From "abiogenesis" to "zygote," etymologies and definitions elucidate each word and encourage an understanding of the basic roots. This section is followed by a reverse dictionary of sorts--an alphabetical index of the keyword definitions. There's also an index of main entry words, and another index of 500 secondary roots that didn't make into the "Primary Root" list. Crutchfield's definitive book on word roots--geared toward educators, students of medicine, and students of English--is a superb classroom resource and a worthwhile home reference as well. --Stephanie Gold

There has never been a book that exploits the power of word roots as thoroughly as the Vocabulary Quick Reference. Its audience includes students studying for college entrance exams, teachers, libraries, medical students and practitioners, biology students, ESL students, and numerous others who don't fall into any of these categories but just want to improve their vocabulary. The Vocabulary Quick Reference is the only book of its kind. It gives 260 Greek and Latin word roots, which are listed in the primary root index at the beginning of the book. This book is unique in that for each word root, it gives a complete list of words that contain that root. The keyword section is also unique in that it provides a comprehensive alphabetical list of the most important words (keywords) from each definition. This list brings many related words together so they can be studied together, as well as providing a method for looking up a word through its meaning. All words that are related are referenced. Complete etymology and pronunciation are provided for each word.

Three-colored text is used for selective emphasis of critical information. Red text indicates a very common word. This is especially helpful to students studying for the SAT. The blue words within each dictionary definition provide a shorter and easier-to- remember definition embedded within each complete definition and also comprise the alphabetical list in the keyword section.

The clever organization of this unique book results in a vocabulary learning tool that is packed with information, yet is not intimidating.

The book is a veritable treasure chest of the English language. My only objection, why is the workbook that is written for this book not available online? Where can it be obtained? I have tried the quickreference site, but it does not have it for sale there.

Wow. What an interesting vocabulary book. Obviously, the author has spent years of hard work writing this book. I love studying root words. Once you understand the root of the word, the rest is easy.... Pterodactyl.. Pter=wing + dactyl=finger, gives you "winged finger". Helicopter... helico=circular + pter=wing, gives your "circular wing." This book really makes learning vocabulary fun and easy. He also has a web site at http://www.quickreference.com

I am using this book with 7th and 8th grade remedial students and it is working beautifully. The book is easy to use and the examples are revelant and save time.

                  5 out of 5 stars a MUST-READ for fellow logophiles!!.......2000-10-27

I had the good fortune of being seated next to the author on a (normally tedious)5 hour flight from Washington DC to Sacaramento. In conversation, Roger mentioned that he'd written a book on work roots. Instead of a yawn, I sprung to life, asking zillions of questions. Roger scribbled on United Airline napkins for hours, dissecting (dis-away, sect-to cut)words with Latin and Greek origins. After dinner, I thought I should nap, but my brain kept me awake asking..."what about penultimate?", etc.

I can't imaging what an invaluable aid this would be as a reference for any Elementary, Jr. High or High School Student. This should be required reading for any University Med, Law, Lit or Music student. Thanks to United Airlines for seating me next to Mr. Crutchfield and thanks to Amazon for shipping within a day!

5 out of 5 stars This book generates a thirst for learning vocabulary........1999-11-17

I have used this book in my etymology classes at Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Virginia, for the past two years. I have begun to incorporate it into my ninth grade English classes. The students thoroughly enjoy using this book and now the workbook that can accompany it. Most students have acknowledged a one hundred point increase in SAT scores after using the text. This roots approach allows the students to learn to unlock the meanings of words that they may have never seen. This book generates a thirst for learning new words and also allows them to create neologisms for things that have never been named. Students work enthusiastically with Vocabulary Quick Reference, and that would bring a smile to any educator's face. If you don't have it in your classroom, your students are being cheated. The synergy between Japanese anime and American pop culture is explored in this book, a companion piece to the traveling exhibition currently in installation at the Brooklyn Museum of Art. My Reality examines the role of anime on modern art; in particular, there's a technology-friendly bent to anime, which the book asserts has been assimilated in the technique of "serious" artists in both hemispheres. The book, much like the exhibition, touches upon the common anime themes of high technology, aliens, cyborgs and so on, but through a series of essays, draws a link between these and real-life themes such as gender roles and popular and consumer culture. Showcasing artwork from emerging artists like Takashi Murakami, Mariko Mori, and Paul McCarthy, this book is an interesting, although way too brief, commentary on art and culture in the face of technology and the future, as well as providing additional depth to the context of this intriguing exhibition.

                  1 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2001-12-12

This is a this book of three essays with some just sort of interesting photos and illustrations. I was expecting lots of great Anime and collectable art that is inspired by Manga and Anime, but this is a companion to a traveling exhibit of art inspired by Anime and Manga. The art is just ok, nothing really interesting, and the essays are dull as if written for a thesis. There are way too many footnotes, and phrases like "ontological insecurity". I just don't see this type of art as high-brow art. Skip this book.
