1 out of 5 stars Deadly.......2003-03-06

I only have one world for this book. DEADLY!

1 out of 5 stars Terribly outdated and dangerous........2001-09-20

I cannot fault the intent of Vriends since I do not know him personally, but this book has caused me as a hedgehog rescuer no end of difficulty. This book -- and others -- recommend things that are terrible for hedgehogs. Cedar shavings, as another reviewer noted, are recommended by this book. The aromatic oils from cedar shavings can cause respiratory failure in hedgehogs and other complications. It gets worse from there.

The novice hedgehog owner is not going to pick up on these inaccuracies or errors, and that means that because of this book, hedgehogs are going to receive poor care. If you want a better book, try Dawn Wrobel's The Hedgehog: Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet OR try doing some research on the Internet instead, where the information is frequently peer-reviewed and kept more up-to-date than in a static publication.

1 out of 5 stars This book almost killed my hedgehog! Don't buy this book!.......2000-07-26

This is a good book for anyone who is planning on reading other books on hedgehogs besides this one. It provides basic information that is neccesary to know. However it stops there. There is nothing extraordinary about this book. Plus some of the information is wrong. By following the directions in this book, I almost killed my hedgehog.

2 out of 5 stars Nicely presented but not all correct!.......1999-11-20

The more I got into the book, the less it reminded me of the prickly critters I have grown to love. Much of his information is incorrect (the usage of cedar shavings, the 'nausea' sections, etc) and the rest seems to be based off of his observation of African Pygmies in the WILD. Appearantly our domesticated pets behave a little differently. An alright book in general, but you need to discern the good from the bad and that may not be too obvious for the new hedgehog afficionado.

5 out of 5 stars This is charming book, esppecially for anyone likes hedgehogs.......1999-01-11

This is one of the most fasanating books I have ever read.If you are considering a hedgehog or already own one you must perchis this book.It covers evrything from taming,to raising your own hedgehogs, and even letting them go in your own backyard.

      Book Description

It is widely accepted that English is the first truly global language and lingua franca. Its dominance has even led to its use and adaptation by local communities for their own purposes and needs. One might see English in this context as being simply a neutral, universal vehicle for the expression of local thoughts and ideas. In fact, English words and phrases have embedded in them a wealth of cultural baggage that is invisible to most native speakers. Anna Wierzbicka, a distinguished linguist known for her theories of semantics, has written the first book that connects the English language with what she terms "Anglo" culture. Wierzbicka points out that language and culture are not just interconnected, but inseparable. This is evident to non-speakers trying to learn puzzling English expressions. She uses original research to investigate the "universe of meaning" within the English language (both grammar and vocabulary) and places it in historical and geographical perspective. For example, she looks at the history of the terms "right" and "wrong" and how with the influence of the Reformation "right" came to mean "correct." She examines the ideas of "fairness" and "reasonableness" and shows that, far from being cultural universals, they are in fact unique creations of modern English. This engrossing and fascinating work of scholarship should appeal not only to linguists and others concerned with language and culture, but the large group of scholars studying English and English as a second language.

            Book Description

At the start of the eighteenth century, talk of literary "characters" referred as much to letters and typefaces as it did to persons in books. Yet by the nineteenth century, characters had become the equals of their readers, friends with whom readers might spend time and empathize.

Although the story of this shift is usually told in terms of the "rise of the individual," Deidre Shauna Lynch proposes an ingenious alternative interpretation. Elaborating a "pragmatics of character," Lynch shows how readers used transactions with characters to accommodate themselves to newly commercialized social relations. Searching for the inner meanings of characters allowed readers both to plumb their own inwardness and to distinguish themselves from others. In a culture of mass consumption, argues Lynch, possessing a belief in the inexpressible interior life of a character rendered one's property truly private.

Ranging from Defoe and Smollett to Burney and Austen, Lynch's account will interest students of the novel, literary historians, and anyone concerned with the inner workings of consumer culture and the history of emotions.

              Book Description

While the Victorian novel famously describes, catalogs, and inundates the reader with things, the protocols for reading it have long enjoined readers not to interpret most of what crowds its pages. The Ideas in Things explores apparently inconsequential objects in popular Victorian texts to make contact with their fugitive meanings. Developing an innovative approach to analyzing nineteenth-century fiction, Elaine Freedgood here reconnects the things readers unwittingly ignore to the stories they tell.

Building her case around objects from three well-known Victorian novels—the mahogany furniture in Charlotte Brontë’s Jane Eyre, the calico curtains in Elizabeth Gaskell’s Mary Barton, and “Negro head” tobacco in Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations—Freedgood argues that these things are connected to histories that the novels barely acknowledge, generating darker meanings outside the novels’ symbolic systems. A valuable contribution to the new field of object studies in the humanities, The Ideas in Things pushes readers’ thinking about things beyond established concepts of commodity and fetish.

                Book Description

This book provides detailed studies in one of the fastest growing areas of linguistics - corpus analysis - and shows how computers can be used to reveal culturally significant patterns of language use. It contains copious authentic examples for millions of words of corpus data and from many types of naturally occurring texts: school books, courtroom language, speeches by politicians and other public figures, sexist language. Lexical collocations, modality, transitivity, causativity and agency are analyzed to provide many clear examples of how such patterns convey attitudes, presuppositions and points of view. A major chapter demonstrates methods of analyzing key words in British culture. Stubbs gives his work a systematic theoretical basis in an authoritative explanation of the principles of British text analysis from the 1930s to the 1990s, especially in work by J. R. Firth, M. A. K. Halliday and J. McH. Sinclair. This tradition of social linguistics shows how important it is to base linguistic descriptions on adequate attested data. The book is designed to introduce students to basic methods of corpus analysis, semantics and pragmatics, language and ideology, critical linguistics and stylistics. Some knowledge of introductory linguistics is assumed: the book is suitable from second year courses upwards. The main audience will be undergraduate and postgraduate students in courses on corpus linguistics, text and discourse analysis, semantics and pragmatics, language and ideology, critical linguistics, and stylistics.

                    Book Description

Before the technology of print, every book was unique. Two manuscripts of the "same" text could package and transmit that text very differently, depending on the choices made by scribes, compilers, translators, annotators, and decorators. Is it appropriate, Elizabeth Bryan asks, for us to read these books as products of a single author's consciousness? And if not, how do we read them?
In Collaborative Meaning in Medieval Scribal Culture, Bryan compares examples from the British Library Cotton Otho C.xiii manuscript of La3amon's Brut, the early thirteenth-century verse history that translated King Arthur into English for the first time. She discovers cultural attitudes that valued communal aspects of manuscript texts--for example, a view of the physical book as connecting all who read or even held it to each other.
The study is divided into two parts. Part one presents Early Middle English concepts of "enjoining" texts and explores the theoretical and methodological challenges they pose to present-day readers of scribally-produced texts. Part two conducts a detailed study of the multiple interpretations built into the manuscript text. Illustrations of manuscript pages accompany analysis, and the reader is invited to engage in interpreting the manuscript text.
Collaborative Meaning in Medieval Scribal Culture will be of interest to students and specialists in medieval chronicle histories, Middle English, Arthurian literature, and literary and textual theory.
Elizabeth J. Bryan is Associate Professor of English, Brown University.

                        2 out of 5 stars A disorganized disappointment........2005-10-08

I am a relative novice of calligraphy, and, have of late, purchased several books to work towards improving my skills. This book sounded much better in theory than it was in practice. First of all, it only demonstrate six fonts, and while it certainly examines those six fonts in depth, it is still a rather slim offering. The book is also terribly organized. It jumps around from subjects to fonts to exercises and back again in a manner that is neither user-friendly nor particularly enlightening. While it does a decent job introducing one to some of the basics of calligraphy, it falters when it comes to teaching the art of calligraphy. Look around Amazon, and you are sure to find several better introductory volumes on this enjoyable hobby.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Beginners!.......2005-08-02

..gives great detail on the 'How To's' for the beginner. Lots of do's and don't's on the 'Art' of Calligraphy.

                        5 out of 5 stars The BEST.......2004-12-26

This is truly the best book I have read on this subject. As someone trying to learn Calligraphy on her own, this is the only book that described everything I needed to know. After reading several other books on the subject, I was near giving up. For the beginner there is no other book needed.
