Book Description
With the possible exception of the vampire bat, no North American animal has been the source of more superstitions, the subject of as many legends, or the object of more exaggerated claims than the Gila monster (HELODERMA SUSPECTUM). Not only is the Gila monster America's largest and only poisonous lizard, it is our slowest moving saurian, the only reptile having an armored hide, and the only lizard with a forked tongue like a snake's. No biologist has yet discovered a Gila monster nest or observed a Gila monster hatching in the wild. Add to these phenomena the fact that more than 99% of the Gila monster's life is spent out of sight below the surface of the ground, and you have the makings for a very mysterious creature indeed. Authors David Brown and Neil Carmony have examined the available literature to write a very readable account of the lizard's natural history, including descriptions, fossil records, distribution, temperature and moisture regulation, reproduction, longevity, predators, and population status. They also document its relationship to humans and folklore; its venom; bites of humans and other animals; and bite. The lore of the Southwest is replete with wild claims and fantastic stories about Gila monsters, selections of which introduce and enliven many subsections of the book. The authors then proceed to dispel such myths with accurate, well-researched discussions of the scientific data. This entertaining and informative volume will be enjoyed by anyone interested in reptiles, the Southwest, or the lore of desert creatures.
Customer Reviews:
Ignore the cover and read the book.......2000-02-23
It is an unfortunate fact of publishing that the people who design book covers are not the same as those who write the books. In fact, authors frequently have little or no say over how their work is packaged. I suspect this is the case for Brown and Carmony's excellent work on Gila monsters.
It is true that Gila Monster, Facts and Folklore of America's Aztec Lizard carries errors on the back cover, but there are none in the text. Indeed, Brown and Carmony communicate their fascinating subject in a manner that is both readable and accurate. They present not only a complete picture of Gila Monster biology, but also a fascinating look the animals' cultural significance. I heartily urge this book for anyone who has an interest in the herpetology, natural history, or folklore of the American Southwest.
promotes misconceptoins of the lizard.......1999-08-16
The overall content of the book was good and easily readable, but especially on the cover the authors stated some out and out untruths about the Gila Monster. The Gila Monster is not the only lizard with a forked tongue or with an armored hide as the authors stated. The varanids and teiids also have forked tongue and at least some have armored hides. I tend to disagree with a few other comments made in the book, but at present these are just my opinions and need more research before I can justify an argument against them. The book was interesting, but have some suspicion when reading as to whether or not it is all correct.
Good introduction to the lizard.......1998-07-24
Fascinating information regarding early envenomations in the American West, a good bibliography, and wonderful introduction to the subject suitable for any naturalist.

Sports calls help us remember the best of times--who can forget the "Music City Miracle" (that's the "immaculate deception" to you, Bills fans)? "Touchdown, Titans! There are no flags on the field! It's a miracle!" They also help us remember the worst of times--such as the day the Vikings' Jim Marshall got a little confused after recovering a fumble. "Marshall is running the wrong way! Marshall is running the wrong way! And he's running it into the end zone the wrong way! Thinks he's scored a touchdown, and he's scored a safety!" Who doesn't grin when they hear Howard Cosell bellowing, "Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier! Down goes Frazier!" And who can forget the night Kareem Abdul-Jabbar broke the NBA career scoring record? From Babe Ruth's raspy thank-you in his farewell speech in 1947 to Tiger Woods's resounding victory in the 2000 U.S. Open, And the Fans Roared captures more of history's greatest sports calls.
Similar in format to its sister volume, And the Crowd Goes Wild, And the Fans Roared includes two CDs featuring 43 original sports calls, including Michael Jordan sinking "The Shot," Affirmed winning the Triple Crown, the Nancy Kerrigan/Tonya Harding soap opera, Tom Dempsey kicking a 63-yard game-winning field goal, Mike Tyson biting off a chunk of Evander Holyfield's ear, and Walter Payton breaking Jim Brown's career rushing record. The book sets up each event with capsule explanations, accompanied by stock photographs. Narrated by Bob Costas, And the Fans Roared will entertain any sports fan. --M. Stein

Customer Reviews:
some great plays on cd and picture book.......2006-12-21
The cds contained are nicely narrated by bob costas and the book has some nice pictures inside. The book covers a wide range of sprorts which should appeal to any sports fan.
JUST A BLAST.......2004-01-16
This was fun. Highly recommended. I think the audio CDs, could be a bit long winded, but other than that, it's great, especially the book, which is beautiful and nicely written.
The Best of the Best.......2000-12-09
An excellent collection of the most exciting sports moments of the 20th century, and it's a collection that will get more valuable over time. While Garner's writing style might be described as simplistic by some, it is entirely appropriate for the subject matter at hand - sports. Here you don't want ivory-tower verbosity, you want simple direct descriptions, and Garner delivers.
Any sports fan will be captivated by Garners descriptions, and will relive the passion we all experienced with those great events when heroes were still heroes. For the sports fan in your family, there is no better gift.
A spellbinding read.......2000-09-17
I found that the simplicity of Garner's writing style is an appropriate vehicle for conveying the power of sports' most memorable moments. He strikes a balance between overintellectualizing and patronizing the reader. He continues the spellbinding tradition of "And the Crowd Goes Wild" while simultaneously breaking new ground. This book is definitely a great gift idea for the sports fan in your family!
An excellent read, comprehensive memoir.......2000-09-14
I completely disagree with the above review. The CDs and actual broadcasts from the events were great. The book is an excellent recap of some of the greatest sports moments of the last century. I think that over time true sports fans will come to appreciate the book as one of the more important memoirs of sports history.

International trainer and consultant Carl Zaiss says too many of us approach the various key relationships we develop throughout our lives, be they at work or at home, with a mindset that actually hinders our chances for success. In True Partnership he advances the notion that we can better realize our goals by positively redefining the way we see, and act toward, everyone with whom we become associated. Utilizing principles adopted from the new quantum model in physics, Zaiss proposes a similarly interrelated behavioral framework for completely refashioning how we initially engage and later associate with all of those involved--eventually moving us far beyond the "shallow and simplistic" reality prevalent in most of such unions today. The bulk of the book delves further into the four tenets that support his fresh method for relating to others: connecting "as integral parts of a system," communicating "through our speaking and our listening," expanding "access to different perceptions about every situation," and observing "through the lens of our own personal history." Ultimately, as Zaiss suggests, this "paradigm-altering approach" to changing the quality of our relationships could very well open "the door to new opportunities" that we may not now even know exist. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The main reason people don't accomplish more at work and at home is that they don't focus on what matters: the quality of their relationships. In this book, an international business consultant discusses four beliefs that keep people from building productive and satisfying relationships: seeing oneself as separate and autonomous, feeling connected only through power and control, having an either/or, right/wrong mentality, and perceiving the world as fixed and predetermined. True Partnership offers a proven and effective method for improving relationships by reassessing these limiting beliefs.
Customer Reviews:
Get Out Of That "Drift!".......2002-05-21
Carl Zaiss makes the bold statement in his new book that "there are things we can do to build a stronger relationship no matter what the other person does." In this fantastic book, the author contrasts "The Drift," his term for traditional ways of thinking and relating to other people, with "True Partnership," in which efforts are focused on enhancing the relationship itself. If things aren't going your way at work or at home because of "those other people in your life, who won't do what they should do" then take heart - this is a very encouraging book that shows you how to stop trying to change other people (and yourself) and instead focus on changing the relationships themselves. Techniques include connecting with others by realizing the interdependence of us all on each other; communicating with intent to constantly improve the quality of communications; expanding from an "either/or" mentality to a "both/and" orientation; and observing not from one's initial "gut feeling" point of view but trying out different points of view to see if a new one helps resolve an old conflict. I really enjoyed this book and highly recommend it for those looking for a new communications, team building, or conflict management tool.
Inspiring & Practical--what more could you ask?.......2002-03-26
Carl is an inspired writer *and* a good writer. If you want to read something that shows you the way AND inspires you to go there, this is it. Get the book!
True Partnership.......2002-03-16
Don't shy away from this book because you feel "partnership" has been overused. This is a refreshing look at the state of our relationships. "True Partnership" provides a powerful and practical roadmap for transforming personal and business relationships. The "In the Drift" vs "In True Partnership" tables are a concise yet revealing look at common situations and the benefits of dealing with those situations from the partnership perspective. Read this book and follow the principles. Challenging relationships will improve, good relationships will be great.
Change, Partenrships and Transformation.......2002-03-14
Those of us in the change and transition business are vocal, loud and some would say, obnoxious advocates for recognizing the human side and impact of change. Too often our words fall on deaf ears...with "True Partnerships" we finally have a text that deals with NEW principles for relating to others during, before and after change. We finally have a text that deals with the potential destructiveness of autonomy, power, scarcity mentality and victimhood. Instead this book awakens a call to action for relationships that produce extraordinary results by shifting our philosophy to one of connection, communication, expansion and creator/observer. It is powerful, beyond words and is guaranteed to cause you to examine your own approach of "drift" versus "true partnership." It can shake you up and transform your relationships at work, at home and everywhere inbetween. Read it and begin relating differently today.
True Partnership: Revolutionary Thinking About Relating to.......2002-03-13
Great relationships, whether in our business or our personal lives, take courage, compassion, wisdom, honesty and skill.
Carl's book provides the skills - and encourages the other qualities!
Using TRUE PARTNERSHIP principles as a basis, I have negotiated through several challenging conflicts, and have referenced Carl's book in seminars I've presented on Conflict Management, Negotiation and Leadership.
TRUE PARTNERSHIP should be in every library! This book truly has been an investment in my future.

Book Description
Finally, the software gods have rescued us from our stalled, confused love lives by giving us so many new ways to meet, connect, and share what we want, feel, and mean. Or have they? Dating has never been simple, but in an age of IMs, text messages, e-mails, and BlackBerry notes, it can be an absolute minefield. How can you accurately judge a guy's potential when all you have to go on is his punctuation? What's the best way to maintain your witty, sassy rapport once you've decided to leave the safety of techno-anonymity and take your relationship off-line? When do you remedy a techno-gaffe or know if it's too early to hit send? And how can you gauge his feelings without seeing his body language or even hearing his voice?
Enough is enough. In The Joy of Text, real-life cyber-Cyrano Kristina Grish establishes hard and fast rules to help modern women navigate their love lives via technology; offers invaluable tips on how to analyze text, timing, and tone; and provides advice on etiquette in an age when the handwritten thank-you note is all but obsolete.
Customer Reviews:
A joy to read!.......2007-05-29
What an entertaining, refreshing, and thought-provoking read! The premise of Kristina's book is that our expanding techno-modes of communicating--ranging from e-mail to IMs to texting--have indeed changed the way we approach relationships, but if these techno-driven relationships are to succeed, they need to be as equally stimulating in their non-electronic forms. This book provides a bird's eye view of just how much techno-relating has permeated our lives. (How did we ever communicate without e-mail and cell phones anyway?) It also provides a nice reminder that all the techno-relating in the world can't replace the need we all have for real, live human connection.

excellent for beginners in listening skills - a real winner.......1999-03-03
I have had to read Egan's "The Skilled Helper" for a B. Counseling I am doing, and someone lent me a well worn ancient version of "You and Me". Having read a bit on listening skills and having been counselling (two "ll" for Australian spelling), I thought I knew it all, but I found Egan's You and me" so concisely helpful. I wish I could give it to all my clients. I guess there are other books around, but for a generic listening skills book, I don't think you can beat You and Me.
