Book Description
Learn to maximize tilapia production in different areas around the world
Tilapia is the second-most cultured fish species in the world, and its production is increasing each year. However, for several reasons profit margins remain slim. Tilapia: Biology, Culture, and Nutrition presents respected international experts detailing every aspect of tilapia production around the world. Biology, breeding and larval rearing, farming techniques, feeding issues, post-harvest technology, and industry economics are clearly presented. This concise yet extensive reference provides the latest research and practical information to efficiently and economically maximize production in diverse locales, conditions, and climates.
Tilapia: Biology, Culture, and Nutrition comprehensively explores all types of tilapia with a detailed biologic description of the fish that takes readers from egg through harvesting. The book authoritatively discusses production issues such as feed nutrition, temperature, water quality, parasites, and disease control to guide readers on how to best encourage fast, efficient growth. Economic and marketing information are examined, including industry data and projections by country. Each chapter approaches a specific facet of tilapia and provides the most up-to-date research available in that area. This resource gives the most current, detailed information needed for effective tilapia farming in one compact economical volume. Extensively referenced with an abundance of clear, helpful tables, photographs, and figures.
Tilapia: Biology, Culture, and Nutrition discusses in detail:
complete biology, including sex ratios, optimum temperatures for growth and spawning, water quality parameters, and disease tolerance
industry predictions
hormonal control of growth
genetic improvement
sex determination, manipulation, and control
seed production
culture practices
earthen and lined pond production
culture in flowing water
cage culture
feed formulation and processing, and feeding management
soil, water, and effluent quality
saline tolerance levels with optimum rate of acclimation to seawater
polyculture of tilapia with shrimp
bottom soil conditions

Customer Reviews:
Invaluable!!!!.......2002-04-26
This book is a "must" for all Nutritionists dealing with aquatic species. It never leaves my side while working on formulations and reviewing pertinent data on nutrient requirements and nutritional management of various commercially important species.
Only bad comment is that it is 1993 and it is time for NRC to bring out a new edition. hint hint....

Nutrient Requirements of Fish (Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals)
ASIN: 0412077019 |
Book Description
Aquaculture is now recognized as a viable and profitable enterprise worldwide. As aquaculture technology has evolved, the push toward higher yields and faster growth has involved the enhancement or replacement of natural foods with prepared diets. In many aquaculture operations today, feed accounts for more than one-half the variable operating cost. Therefore, knowledge of nutrition and practical feeding of fish is essential to successful aquaculture.
This book is not written exclusively for scientists but also for students, practicing nutritionists, and aquaculturists. It covers the known nutrient requirements and deficiency effects for different fishes, and digestion and metabolism of nutrients and energy. It discusses nutrient sources and preparation of practical and research feeds. It gives directions for conducting fish nutrition and feeding experiments. Feeding practices for salmonids, channel catfish, tilapias, shrimps and hybrid striped bass are presented.
Since the first edition of this book was printed, the National Research Council of the National Academy of Sciences has revised the nutrient requirements for fish. These revisions are in the present edition. Other additions to this revised edition are chapters on nutrition and fish health, and bioavailability of nutrients. Each original chapter has been meticulously revised and updated with new information. Aquaculture is a dynamic area and new technologies are being introduced continuously; therefore, some of the material discussed in this revised edition may become obsolete quickly. Nonetheless, the material presented has been thoughtfully selected and updated to make it of maximum use to persons whose interests range from general aquaculture to animal nutrition to feed manufacture.

Book Description
We are just beginning to discover the importance of vitamin C in the health of natural and man-made ecosystems. Synthesis of ascorbic acid is well understood, but algae as the only source of ascorbate in the aquatic food pyramid has not been explored. There is an expanding field of the culture of aquatic organisms that demand formulated feeds to best meet their requirements for health, growth, and reproduction. With over 100 species now cultured for human consumption, the question arises as to whether we have reliable information for the dietary needs for vitamin C for even a small percentage of these organisms. A comprehensive approach to the role of vitamin C at the cellular level as well as in the aquatic food chains, this book discusses growth and reproduction, disease resistance, and toxicology of aquatic organisms. Ascorbic Acid in Aquatic Organisms was written as the offshoot of a special session on aquatic organisms and practical aquaculture at the 1998 World Aquaculture Society (WAS) meeting. This book reviews the research already available and identifies new directions for research. It is a unique combination of good nutrition research, ecology, and practical aquaculture (for instance brine shrimp enrichment). This interdisciplinary volume will appeal to marine fish culturists, aquatic biologists, comparative and evolutionary cellular physiologists, and environmental toxicologists.
Book Description
This manual describes a species of hardy fish that can be kept indoors or in outdoor pools. Original goldfish are yellow, but as this book of advice for aquarium hobbyists explains, selective breeding produces goldfish in several colors, as well as with a variety of exotic features. Titles in BarronÂ's wide-ranging and heavily illustrated selection of Complete Pet Owner's Manuals present reliable and useful information for pet owners. High-quality photos are in color and line drawings are anatomically accurate. These fact-filled books instruct owners on how to care for dogs, cats, birds, fish, caged pets, reptiles, and virtually every other animal that people are likely to keep as a pet. Books in this series are written by breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and other pet-care specialists. They advise on purchasing, feeding, health care, training, grooming, and all other aspects of responsible pet ownership.
Customer Reviews:
Great read for the novice goldfish keeper........2007-03-08
I found this book to be very useful in preparing me to get my first goldfish. I would recommend reading it before you go out and buy your aquarium and fish, because it has lots of information about selecting an aquarium and setting it up. It also describes some of the different types of goldfish, so you can determine what type would be best for you (some are not as hardy as others and so are not good for beginners).
The book is rather short, but it's meant as more of a basic informative guide for the beginning goldfish keeper rather than as a detailed manual for advanced raising/breeding of goldfish. It's full of useful tips on everything from how to make your aquarium aesthetically pleasing, to what types of goldfish are best kept together. It also talks a little bit about the history of the goldfish species and about goldfish anatomy, and why some types are more prone to problems than others. The author stresses the importance of maintaining a clean aquarium and preventing health problems before they start.
I own several of the Barron's line of pet-keeping manuals, and I've found it to be a very good series. I would recommend this book to someone who's thinking about getting their first goldfish; it's a fun and informative read.
Good for very basic information........2006-07-11
This is a very basic beginners book. It is not well versed on disease and treatment. However, my 2 year old likes the photos!
Goldfish review.......2005-08-10
Very informative. This book had some information that I was looking for. I especially found the section on goldfish varieties helpful.
gold fish.......2004-05-06
Overall this is a good beginners book. Lots of helpfull information on the more common types of goldfish both flat and eggshaped, setting up your aquarium and maintaining it, common diseases, diet, ponds, breeding and plants.
Good for begginers.......2003-05-23
A good book for begginers. The title misguides the reader into thinking it is a complete reference for goldfish. The author briefly touches many of the topics. I regret buying this book because it did not solve my questions about diseases, plant care, water quality, and nutrition. A good book for kids. Nice photographs.
