Book Description
This text looks at why hooliganism continues to pose a major threat to the modern game, and reveals how football violence has evolved from the terrace conflict of the 1970s into the Internet-led designer combat of the millennium.
Customer Reviews:
SO VERY TRUE.......2007-01-03
THIS BOOK COVERED THE WHOLE ASPECT OF THE HOOLIGAN SCENE AND FOR THOSE THAT DO NOT KNOW WHAT A HOOLIGAN IS OR WAS THEN YOU JUST NEED TO READ THIS BOOK.
5 stars as a term paper, 3 as a book.......2003-12-23
I'll take the blame for not doing my homework. I believe I would have been much more happy had I purchased Brimson's "Every where we go" instead of Barmy Army.
I was looking for a down and dirty tale of hooliganism as I am a major football fan and have been interested in that fanatic angle. I did enough research to know that that "thug" book was probably more fiction than non, so I ended up with the right author, but not the right book.
Barmy Army reads like a magazine article or high school term paper. Although there are several mentions of high profile incidents, I never got inside the hooligan's head, even though there are several chapeters with headings (Who? Why? etc.) Again, more my fault than the author. I get the feeling though that he has milked this subject matter for all its worth as there was a lot of "...as I mentioned in my best selling book, Every Where We Go" and "You'll have to read England, my England if you want that story..." type comments.
Again, if you're looking for a behind the scenes account, Barmy Army has a few incidents of this, but the focus is to analyze hooliganism and try to draw some rationale for it. You won't find much of that first person account of action, reasoning, conflict, obervations, etc.
OK read..........2003-10-24
One reviewer mentions in a positive light that this book is everything that Among the Thugs is not. I agree, but with a different take on it. This book is more of an academic essay on what hooliganism is about, its causes, and how to stop it. Among the Thugs is a first person account of a journalist who followed some hooligans. Barmy Army is good if you want pseudo-academic opinion. Among the Thugs is great if you want to hear details of football violence- it satisfies the voyeur in all of us. I preferred Among the Thugs, whether it is well-researched and accurate or not.
One major flaw in this book is Brimson's referances to his other books. Just when he builds up to any particularly infamous example of hooliganism to make a point, he says something like "This has already been explored in (insert one of his other book titles here)..." and then tells you nothing about the incident. I haven't read these other books, so it left me hanging.
This book is interesting, but not a real page-turner.
Fantastic!.......2003-02-18
This book is everything Among The Thugs is not: accurate, brilliantly researched and absolutley rivetting.
The chapters dedicated to the history of hooliganism in England are possibly the best I have ever read on the subject whilst Brimson's typical 'in-your-face-style' of commenting on the media and the police are perfectly observed.
If you love sport, you will love this book. It is awesome!
A hard-hitting eye-opener.......2000-09-17
Dougie Brimson is himself, an ex-hooligan and has now turned to writing about the subject. His most recent work, Barmy Army, seeks to analyse how hooligans operate, coordinate with each other and what causes a person to become a hooligan. As with all his work on the subject, Brimson provides a hard-hitting, frank and often shocking account of the subject. He uses many real examples of hooligan's behaviour, including some of his own experiences to give a genuine insight into the subject. Much of this book is quite chilling to read, and will definitely shock some people, but overall, Brimson has produced a worthwhile look at the underbelly of football that will be of great interest to those interested in the sport.

Book Description
Designing & Conducting Survey Research, third edition
Since it was first published in 1992, Designing and Conducting Survey Research has become the standard reference in the field for public and nonprofit managers who are responsible for conducting effective and meaningful survey research. This updated and expanded third edition builds on the first two volumes and contains additional statistical techniques, new reporting methods that meet the growing demands for accountability, and more user-friendly analysis methods.
Designing and Conducting Survey Research is a complete, practical guide to conducting sample survey research. In a comprehensive manner, it explains all major components of survey research, including construction of the instrument, administration of the process, and analysis and reporting of results. Clear, concise, and accessible, this guide explains how to conduct a survey research project from start to finish. Further, it shows how this research method can be applied in such diverse fields as urban affairs, social science, and public administration. Designing and Conducting Survey Research is an excellent tool that will help both professionals and students understand and explain the validity of sample survey research.
Praise for the Previous Edition of Designing & Conducting Survey Research
"Clear, thorough, well-written, and eminently practical. Takes you step by step through all you need to know to conduct a survey or evaluate one and provides a basic understanding of the theoretical basis of sampling. The clarity of the book makes it a model for effective instruction and one that opens the road for those who must master the subject themselves."
-Norton Long, professor emeritus of political science, University of Missouri, St. Louis
"A basic tool for conducting survey research projects that any researcher can understand and use. Freed of confusing statistical theory yet comprehensive in approach, with step by step details."
-John B. Sauvajot, public management consultant and former deputy chief administrative officer, San Diego County
"Demystifies the arcane world of pollsters and survey research. Anyone who conducts surveys, hires survey consultants, reads reports, or makes policy based on survey data will benefit from this book."
-Robert J. Waste, Survey Research Center, California State University, Chico

An informative and interesting read..........2007-01-09
I purchased this text in order to brush up on some of the basic survey techniques for some work-related research projects. It has worked wonders for our sample selection and data collection processes.
clearly written.......2006-02-25
This text is easy to read and has helped me in constructing a mail-out survey.
Well written instructions for writing and interpting surveys.......2000-01-28
This is an excellent reference book for writing survey questions, for ensuring population representation in your samples and for interpting the responses. It even includes reference statistical tables for use in analysis of survey responses. All this in a small volume that is easily understood because it is so well written! It hits the nail right on the head. If you are conducting surveys or must present results after a survey is completed, this is a "must read" book.

An encyclopedic work to meet the needs of survey designers........2000-01-27
I had taken on a consultation project in which the task was to develop a climate survey for use within a public school system. I painstakingly reviewed various research journals and books pertaining to the subject matter of survey design. The information gathered from these sources was helpful, but not adequate. Fortunately, I discovered the book "Designing and Conducting Survey Research: A Comprehensive Guide" in a library. This book provided me with information that was not only invaluable in my efforts to develop an actual survey instrument, but additionally guided my efforts in designing focus groups to validate my instrument. This publication assisted me with focusing my design efforts. The various appendices provide exceptional reference material. I was so impressed with the information that it provided me, I purchased the text to have as a readily available resource for my future survey endeavors. To all who are embarking on their first survey design journey, or to those of you who are seasoned veterans, do yourself justice and explore this publication.

Book Description
Designing and Conducting Health Surveys is written for students, teachers, researchers, and anyone who conducts health surveys. This third edition of the standard reference in the field draws heavily on the most recent methodological research on survey design and the rich storehouse of insights and implications provided by cognitive research on question and questionnaire design in particular. This important resource presents a total survey error framework that is a useful compass for charting the dangerous waters between systematic and random errors that inevitably accompany the survey design enterprise. In addition, three new studies based on national, international, and state and local surveys—the UNICEF Multiple Indicator Cluster Surveys, California Health Interview Survey, and National Dental Malpractice Survey—are detailed that illustrate the range of design alternatives available at each stage of developing a survey and provide a sound basis for choosing among them.

Book Description
3ds max? 6 Animation and Visual Effects Techniques is a completely updated version of this best-selling book. It covers 3ds max 6 and provides an organized and thorough process for integrating all of the features of max to create, animate, render, and finish an animation project. Beginning with a review of the essentials, users learn about all of the key features used in animation and visual effects, including the fundamentals of animated filmmaking, and then work through detailed tutorials covering modeling of buildings, environments, humans, and aliens. Once they have created the models, the animation techniques are explored, including character setup with bones, lip sync, facial expression, and walk cycles. From there the process moves to scene animation, visual effects, materials and textures, event-based particles, and lighting and rendering. The book ends with detailed chapters on character studio® 4, combustion® 3.0, reactor® 2, Mental Ray® 3.2, and the Shag Hair and Dynamic Effects plug-ins. Anyone interested in learning an efficient and practical process for creating animated environments and films will find what they need here.

Find Something - ANYTHING - else to study from!.......2007-09-24
This book leads me to believe that: a)I will NEVER be able to animate ANYTHING with a bone structure; b)I will NEVER understand the skin modifier; c)I must be a complete dolt.
I know for a fact that I am not a dolt, having worked in the animation industry for some time now, and being an intermediate 3ds Max user. A lot can be said for Max, pro's and con's, but possibly the hardest thing (for me) is animating the human body. We spent about 10 minutes in college learning this, and all the notes I have and Max Bibles and everything else do NOT teach (in layman's terms) HOW TO ANIMATE A HUMAN BODY.
This book was intended as a resource to learn how to animate a completed human model; I am not interested in learning the dreaded techniques of modeling a human just now, as this expansive learning curve is too detailed and time-consuming for me at the moment. Rather I was hoping to modify an existing model (free domain, of course!) and learn to animate it.
The models on the cd which accompanies the book are okay; they're not top of the line, and quite frankly, the nipples on the female body are a bit over the top (its really cold in virtual reality!!), but they are workable. The bone structure is fine. The textures are horrible, and the animation itself is cheeeeeeeesy, but for a learning tool its not that bad. Beware any positive sentiment you may have derived from that last comment, as the book and tutorial in general is horrible.
I have tried and tried and tried to skin this model over and over and over again, only to find the exasperating and frustrating errors of 'envelopes' associated with the model which, I assume, the author purposely created for 'teaching' the correct way to utilize the skin modifier. However, the instructions for troubleshooting this UNFATHOMABLY FRUSTRATING problem leave far too much to be desired; in essence, the instructions do not explain enough. My model is naked, and the skin on his hands is like a rubberband being stretched to its fullest capability. And no matter how many times I try to figure out how to fix this, I am left without a working answer. The book does not cover the troubleshooting of this error more than a line or two aimed for the expressly expert 3d Max user.
For instance, "....this indicates that the skin envelope needs to be adjusted.... Select one of the envelope adjustment handles..." ENVELOPE ADJUSTMENT HANDLES?! WTF ARE THOSE? IS ANYTHING LABLED 'ENVELOPE ADJUSTMENT HANDLE?' NO!! The book continues, "...move it to enlarge it..." MOVE IT? WHERE? HOW? THE ENVELOPE IS UNEFFECTED BY MY ATTEMPTS TO 'MOVE IT.' "... Part of the skin that is sticking up should move down to the hand. Repeat this process for both ends of the skin envelope...." !!!!!!!There are TWO parts of the skin envelope? WHAT?! WHERE?!!
This is what I mean - no explanation. Nothing is labled properly. When I attempted to assign all the bones in the skin modifier, I noticed over HALF of the bones ARE NOT LABLED AS BONES! WTF?!
Believe the criticisms already posted: this book is horrible, it will leave you feeling uninspired to animate humans and frustrated, and is a real waste of time and money.
Very good overview.......2006-08-14
Contrary to some of the other reviews I think this is a great book; it's one of the only books I've found that gives a "complete" overview of the film-making process with 3ds Max. While the content may not be in it's final stage; I think the major problem most would have with it is the fact that it claims to be professional work instead of merely educational examples like most books. I've always found its better to learn with "real" examples, so while I don't know how good the film would do they are excellent learning tools.
Poor Animation Quality.......2005-12-28
Kennedy's book teaches some basics but the quality of his results leaves alot to be desired. It makes you wonder why he would slam the incredible 3D done in Final Fantasy when he isn't even in the same league and probably never will be. The illustrations and textual layout are not as clear as they should be. If you want to learn the basics, you can get something from this book. However, a good book shows you how to get good results. The results he achieves in this book are subpar.
Many other books do far better.
Not recommended.
Worst looking renders I've seen in a published tome.......2005-01-30
I'm stunned that the author claims to have success in this industry given the absolutely horrible work he passes off as being professional in quality. I'm very serious that I have not seen such poor quality in ANY other book. I teach 3D and have seen much better work from novice students. My only conclusion is that the author completely lacks the capacity to be self-critical of his own work given that he obviously believes his film-in-progress merits serious consideration. Do not be misled into thinking that any of the work shown in this book would be acceptable commercially.
Terrible Book.......2004-11-19
This book misses a lot of what it teaches by not including much of what you see in the book (models, etc....), I agree with most of the other reviews here, I have this book that is why I do not recommend it, better get the book by Barrett Fox on 3DSMax6 on how to complete an animation project. That is a great book.

Customer Reviews:
A wealth of information!.......2007-09-16
Dan Ablan is a great instructor, hands down! His books, courseware and support are far none the best in this industry. This book is truly a reflection of quality, quality that you'd expect Dan to provide.
Some of you might say that some of the chapters in this book are pretty basic. I am not here to bash any of you, I just want to write a review about this book, but... Not everyone will find these chapters "basic." They are what I call, informative!
This book provides a wealth of information. Some of it was information I already knew, but that's because I have been doing photography since I was a kid. His technique and ideations however, put a whole new spin on how I work with my digital photos. I admire Dan for his creativity and ideas. This book will definately give you a new perspective on how to use digital pictures and how to incorpoate them into 3d.
If you are looking for an excellent book to accompany your library, this book is it! I am an amateur at best when it comes to 3D animation. Owning this book, I see myself advancing past this "amateur" level. :)
If you like Dan's teaching style and his other books, you truly wont be dissapointed by this one! I would also like to suggest his courseware! Dan's courseware is just as good, if not better than his books!
There was nothing in this book that I did not enjoy or get bored with. However, if you are a pro working for Pixar or some professional company, this book might seem "basic" to you.. For the other 95% of us, this book is a great investment!
-Justin
An oddball collection of topics.......2007-09-15
I'm somewhat of a noob in 3d modelling and animation, and so this book really interested me. I was hoping to learn how to better use photography to do things like create effective reference images, textures, normal maps, bump maps, displacement maps, and such.
After reading through most of the book, I'm pretty disappointed. While the book does cover such topics, I feel that it gives those topics a pretty superficial treatment, and the focus of the book seems to be on other, what I'd consider, "oddball topics".
The book devotes a lot of time covering digital photography in general. It does this fairly well, but honestly, a book like "Real World Digital Photography" does that much better.
The book also has large sections where it goes into great detail into how to create a 3d slideshow, and another on how to create a digital collage using After Effects. While these topics are kind of interesting, honestly, how often are you going to do something like that?
The book is kind of an interesting read, but after reading it I'm wondering who the intended audience for it actually is. Certainly not 3d animators or modelers like the title and the description of the book seem to indicate.
Training for beginners at its best........2007-03-19
While some may mistake this for a masterclass in 3D and digital photography, it is quite clearly geared towards beginners. But, it's value as a source of professional training does not stop there. What I found most profoundly useful about this book by Dan Ablan is that it not only helps newcomers to 3D and/or digital photography, but that it may also inspire those who may be intimidated by the depth and complexity associated with 3D to now pursue this wonderful medium to enhance their self expression and understanding. I have purchased many training materials written by Dan Ablan, from video tutorial DVD's to instructional books such as this one, and have always felt the wiser for doing so. I waited until I finished this book before sitting down to write this review. Contrary to other assessments, the techniques taught in this book are accurate for the uses stated in their related topics. If you want to dip your toes into the water of 3D while improving your digital photography skills, then I would highly recommend that you pick up this book. Read it thoroughly. I believe you will find yourself returning to it as a source of reference again and again, as I have. Enjoy.
Excellent & Informative.......2007-03-16
I was hesitant to get this book after reading the one review posted. But instead I got the book anyway. I have to say that the information is excellent. I've worked in 3D for a while, using Maya and Cinema 4D, but had not explored the use of digital photography to the fullest extent. I had emailed Dan Ablan and he replied right away. He told me this book was about ideas and that it helps bridge the gap between photography and 3D, two fields he's worked in for over a decade. He was right and I found that his example photos were outstanding and use of them even better. This book covers managing files which is a big deal as you start taking more shots such as textures and image maps. It covers how to create panoramas in more than one application, and it covers hdri and as Dan shows, works great in modo. I'm new to modo, but the project was cool. I was surprised that the book even covered image modeling using image modeler from [...]and then there was the after effects tutorial creating a heavily layered, animated montage all from photos using masks and keys and blending. I liked the use of 3D for animated photo slideshows and image mapping ideas.
What really surprised me the most was that even though the tutorial are geared towards beginners it has helped my 3D work immensely. What's cool is that Dan included hours of video training tutorials on the book's DVD to help you learn more and there's tons of sample images to work with and free demo software.
Top notch book!
Bad HDRI coverage, maybe OK for beginners.......2007-03-04
This is an important topic. The publisher should have found a more experienced author to write this book!
The coverage of HDRI imaging was full of mistakes. In a step-by-step tutorial, the author makes every mistake in the book: he focuses his camera wrong, he changes the f-stop between bracketed exposures even though this will change the camera's DOF and mess up the alignment of images, in assembling his High Dymanic Range Images with Adobe Photoshop PS2 he advises readers to change modes from HDRI to 16 bit and back, without mentioning that this means he is no longer creating a High Dymanic Range Image. The author doesn't seem to notice that the series of bungling mistakes he has made hasn't produced a HDRI map suitable for image based lighting, and instead acts as if he has achieved highly realistic results.
The author's mis-adventures photographing a Christmas Tree ball in his back yard to make HDRI are only one chapter in this book. He also attempts to make texture maps out of photographs (he gets to the color maps, doesn't go much further into how to derive bump or specular or other maps based on the color.) The book is also full of "filler" chapters that would only be useful to a beginner first using a computer. There's a chapter on image management, showing how you can use a program like iPhoto to organize your pictures, and explaining the difference between compressed and uncompressed image files.
Overall there's not much for a dedicated 3D artist in this book, although some beginners might find some of it useful.
