Book Description
The deep ocean is home to some of the most unusual of all fishes. This book is the first Fish Physiology volume devoted to these bizarre undersea creatures. Practically every organ system is affected by the constraints imposed by benthic pressure, the absence of light, and the relatively scarce supply of both food and mates.
Deep Sea Fishes demonstrates how these fishes living in extremely harsh conditions metabolize, behave, and evolve.

Customer Reviews:
Great book for K-4 graders practices..........2001-05-24
I coach t-ball and little league. This book works great for even the youngsters. I pick and choose the appropriate drills, make copies for hand-outs, and do the drills for practice. They make it more interesting. Great book.
Good Stuff.......2000-01-01
Excellent offensive drills with good illustration to back it up. A must for coaches looking to add a little variety to the same old boring routines.
A must read........1999-05-19
Delmonico presents his drills in an easy to understand format that is right to the point. The pictures and diagrams farthur simplify the understanding of these drills. The only thing is that sometimes he does not go into enough detail and leaves elements of the drills questionable in the mind of those that still have a thing or two to learn about the game and its terminology. Overall it should prove to be a great asset and improve any coaches ability to diversify drills and practice.
Great book. Some terminology clarification needed.......1999-04-03
Delmonico does a great job in showing numerous drills to develope the fundamentals of offensive baseball. However, Some terminology clarification needed for the readers who are not familiar with University of Tennesee baseball. Overall, a must read for coaches at the intermediate to advanced levels

Customer Reviews:
It will provide you with hours of useful staring.......2006-09-04
Images with an embedded three-dimensional image fascinate me. For a long time, I was unable to discern the interior image, but when I was finally able to do so, I was hooked. This collection of 22 images kept me busy for several hours as I went stared at each page until the image appeared. When you look at these pages from a distance, the colors appear to be ordered, but not structured. It is only when you look at it the right way that the true image appears. If you enjoy figures with embedded three-dimensional images, then this is a book that you will appreciate.
You Never Forget Your First Time.......2005-12-15
Yep, the first time those seemingly random sqiggles of color in Magic Eye leap into formation and you're staring down at an object under all that chaotic visual mess...it's a magic moment for sure. These books are a lot of fun and worth the effort it takes to get the knack of how to do it. It took me a few tries before I saw anything here, so if at first you don't succeed, stay with it because it's worth it.
A Reason for Language and Discourse.......2005-04-26
If humans were truly telepathic, there would be little need to explore the ruminations of impressions that identify and create the discourse that produces harmony, vision, and processes that enable man to live together. What we think we see in another's actions is often unrelated to their actual thinking, and hence, the value of interaction is of great importance to humans. By having multiple options of movement, to be influenced by impressions, experiences, and by learning means that the quality and quantity of interactions always carries different meanings to different people, being measured or scrutinized by subjective means as they always are. Therefore, contextual science is inherent in achieving progress, the slow laborious process of acquiring common ground of meaning, objective, and resolution in any interaction, however brief. Since that requires a good bit of reading people's behavior, and processing intent, from the perspective of the "other" external to oneself, conjecture and breath of conjecture provides ample opportunity for success or mistake. The chipping away process of illusions to reach the depth of meaning and significance is a large part of what makes the content of human life. As if the graph existed that placed everyone upon a spectrum of spacial plots, some would be expected to be closer than others, which may or may not reflect the ideal, but may be more related to any given point in time, and attention.
In the eye of the beholder.......2005-03-09
This visual manipulation is sort of fun to engage in with youngsters who seem to have more enthusiasim for this 3-D -eye-foolery. When I read this book with my children years ago I didn't seem to have the patience to sit and stare at a bunch of randomly placed dots and come up with the correct image. I used to look at these things and start hallucinating and concocting images that were NOT there! If I waited long enough a younger, brighter mind would correct me and show me the real image. It got to be more fun than the book to see what I thought I saw. I swear sometimes I just never saw what I was supposed to see. Luckily they give you the "answers" on another page so you can cheat and look for what is supposed to just jump out at you. Maybe my eye was untrainable? This book is sort of fun for a break in activities with children but watch out for the dots before your eyes, you just might see them after the pages are removed from your vision. Fun at a certain level(and frustrating) but there are many more entertaining books out there.
Magic Eye for my Magic I.......2001-08-08
This book is absolutely amazing. My first experience with these kind of prints was framed hanging on a friend's wall. I was thoroughly captivated by it. By this time, the fad of Magic Eye had worn off, but to me it was fresh and exciting. So I began searching for more. Low and behold, here it is. And for a dollar if used!!! This is an extremely addictive and entertaining type of art that I wish I could a computer program for to create my own. If you are as fortunate as I am to be able to catch sight of these images, then this book is a must have. YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!!!

Daughter is pleased.......2005-12-10
I know nothing about it, but my daughter does. She seems to be very pleased with it. I suppose this is what matters most. She has pointed out a few things that may be questionable, but still enjoys it. She is particularly pleased with the fact that the characters are laid out in a graph, for accuracy, as well as the variations of the different types of Japanese calligraphy. Daughter happy, mommy happy. :)
Fascinating material marred by poor presentation.......2004-09-09
I received this book, along with "Brush Writing" and the Takase CD vol. 1, as a gift recently. I am finding each of them useful in its way, but this is the book that I most wish were better.
"Sho" covers quite a large range of subject matter--everything from interviews with sho masters to tips on selling your work at exhibitions to instructions on carving in wood, with little sidelights like Japanese monograms and brushes made of mouse hairs (and yes, there are step-by-step photos of actual brush calligraphy, too). Unfortunately, lots of these topics are discussed in just enough detail to make me want more, but not enough to satisfy me. The book lacks focus. In this respect, "Brush Writing" is much better--its author has wisely (I think) decided that a beginning text is not the place to drag in every topic under the sun related to sho. (Perhaps "Sho" is not meant to be a beginning text, but that's part of the same problem--I can't tell whether it's aimed at me, a novice, or at an expert, or at someone in between.)
Organization is a weak point as well. How to line your work (the equivalent, more or less, of matting/framing it) and sell it is discussed well before we get around to making basic strokes with ink on paper. Interviews are plopped in the middle of the book. There are two different discussions on brushes--one near the beginning, the other near the end. There's a blow-by-blow critique of a work in the author's collection that gives some real insight into how an artist imbued his work with emotion, but it uses technical terms that aren't introduced till later in the book. Take a look at the Table of Contents--I think you'll agree that it's all over the place. Great if you're a browser, not so hot if you're not.
Finally, and this is a big one for me, the typography of the book is just awful. It seems to have been produced on a dedicated word processor with a daisywheel printer (anyone remember those?) or something similar. Boldface print is clearly just overstrike. There is no italic. The font is something from the typewriter era. The book is formatted in two narrow columns per page, which are right-and-left justified with no hyphenation, producing many lines that have huge gaps between the words. It's painfully unattractive, to the point of being difficult to read. In a book presumably meant to appeal to Westerners who are interested in an aesthetic of writing, the ugly typography is a major flaw.
Having said all this, I'll repeat--the book contains a great deal of information which fascinated me, and I'm glad I own it. But if I'd seen it in a store, I'd never have purchased it.
In any case, do yourself a favor and order the Takase CD, which contains something like thirty videos of the sensei writing characters and critiquing student efforts, in addition to the usual written text about materials, posture, strokes, and so on. The videos on this CD will make any book you choose much more understandable.
Update:
I see that Amazon has added the "Look inside this book" feature. Please take a look before you buy!
A true tool for spiritual growth..........2003-01-08
I found this book to offer a complete in-depth analysis and discussion on the importance of Japanese calligraphy from a historical and spiritual reference point. There are many books in my opinion that offer novice information on the stylist qualities and brush stroke procedures, but not many of them focus on the deep history & spiritual connection that mastering the art of calligraphy can bring. The book explains that as your body & mind master the physical art of calligraphy, the spirit becomes enlightened and strong. It explains how great Zen teachers, warriors & emperors increased their proficiency in brush writing and as a result enabled them to reflect a high degree of inner character & self-discipline. Simply a fabulous read and reference for all of us who strive to improve ourselves and understand more of the inner workings and benefits of Japanese calligraphy. A+++
Blessed,
Andy
A "non-native" English reader takes a look at "SHO...".......2002-08-14
This book is quite nice. It offers a good historical background about Japanese Calligraphy, with a lot of stories by famous calligraphers, interviews, and so on. There are also some useful informations on how to display/exhibit your own work. On the other hand, I found it a bit short about the character writng in itself, there isn't enough information on the way/order of the strokes. I recomend this book in adition with one which has a more technical and basic approach, such as "Brush Writing - A practical guide for begginers". I have the two of them and they seem quite complementary.
