James V. Smith's "Writer's Little Helper":

The difficulty with a HOW-TO-WRITE-A-NOVEL text is the tendency to drag the reader into either rigid outlines that enslave, or alternatively, suggest the reader embark upon diverse trivialities which separate him from his own power to tell a story. Neither does knowledge of spelling or grammar indicate whether one can tell a story.

Does James Smith fall into either of these traps in his HOW-TO? No, definitely not. Smith also does not write one of those big books with lots of tiny print that make one feel like a shrew. Rather, Smith has written a book that is a bit of an OUTLINE, but he will tell you plainly that you do not need an OUTLINE; but for lack of another word..... You could read almost any chapter in this book entirely out of order and get just as much out of it. Whether studying CHARACTERS, or TRANSITIONS, or SUB-PLOTS, Smith has only put into this book what an aspiring novelist can use.

PLANNING: Smith tells you that you need only TEN SCENES for the PLANNING of your novel. [You can end up with many more, but for the PLANNING, you only need about ten scenes.
1) an Opener 2) a Point of No Return 3)----through----6) Complications [that's 8] 9) a Closer 10) Ending ...and then Smith explains how this scene tool is to be used.

What you must know about Smith's book is that none of his chapters are very long. He is one of those writers who is not so full of himself that he confuses QUANTITY with QUALITY. Perhaps because Smith is a successful author in his own right, and this book has evolved out of his own experience, he can reduce what he has learned into a methodology of practical imperatives. The reader will benefit from the distillation of his hard won experience.

There is not ONE-WAY to write a novel. The information contained here is a combination of Smith's formal learning and his discoveries. t It is not written as though Smith were telling you that you MUST write a book his way. It is what some refer to as SHOTGUNNING, because Smith gives you everything, and you can select what is most helpful to you. It is a kit of tools

Having examined dozens of book about writing novels, I find that Smith's is by far the very best for its straightforward simplicity, ease of use, and practicality.

Also, I think I know why books such as this come under criticism for being disorganized. Perhaps the reason is that LIFE itself is not "organized" and a creative person must develop their skills and methodologies whenever and however they happen to come by them. If those things actually WORK, they must be included. These different methodologies may have no identifiable inter-relationship.

Some criticisms can also be based upon some false inferrence that all readers already know and understand many METHODOLOGIES that are published and familiar to all. This is highly doubtful, especially when it comes to writing FICTION. That is why it is so important when a published author offers some of his original METHODS such as Smith does, that we recognize it and take advantage of it.

I've never thought I'd write this kind of review about James V. Smith's works. I LOVE them. I think that his first two books on the subject are THE BEST advice on writing one could ever get from a book.
But this one, Mr. Smith, is a dirty shot at your faithful customers: this book has for 99% the same, identical, word-for-word material that there's in the Fiction Writer's Brainstormer. Reading the reviews, I was aware that could be some stuff re-hashed from the past works, and I bought this book accepting I could have some repetitions... but not ALL the book. And on the book there's NOTHING to hint this is a complete reprinting in another form!
For people who already possess Fiction Writer's Brainstormer, this is a complete waste of money.
For people who don't have Fiction Writer's Brainstormer, buy Fiction Writer's Brainstormer instead.
I read in this book that Mr. Smith reads Amazon.com reviews of other books... maybe he reads this one, too: Mr. Smith, if you're in need of money, please don't rip off your faithful fan base that buys your works in the hope of getting some more hints as in the previous books.
Until now, I was eagerly awaiting for a new book from Mr. Smith. From now on, I'll never.

Sloppy and badly organized.......2006-05-14

This book appears to have been very quickly put together. There are numerous typos and missing words which really detracted from my reading experience.

The poor organization of the book also detracted from the value of reading it. Chapters, which are only a few pages long, are irrationally juxtaposed making it difficult to follow a particular thread and even more difficult in looking up a particular topic, like "dialogue", in the index. An example of the poor organization is the chapter on "Proposing the BIG Book" being sandwiched between "What Striking Words Can Do" and "Names [of characters]". To me, book proposal belongs in a completely different category than how to write or how to successfully name characters.

There was a lot of graphical filler in the book that was meaningless, like colorful bubbles and squares. Makes it look like a gimmic to flesh out a book that should have been half as long and half as pricey.

There were some words of wisdom, but the overall experience of reading the book was poor enough to make me not want to listen to them. I'm sorry I bought the book, I should have bought something with more substance.

The reason I gave it two stars at all is because there is gold to mine if one can dig through all the gimicky stuff. The author has good advice that can help improve my writing. I only wish the presentation of the wisdom had been in a more honest and less cute style with less reliance on graphical filler and a lot more reliance on proof reading.

Good, solid advice.......2006-04-13

Like most writers, my bookshelves are crammed with books of all kinds. Mostly, books on writing. As a member of the Writer's Digest Book Club, this book was sent to me automatically. I considered sending it back, but thought, What the heck? Might as well peek between the covers. What I found were short, snappy chapters oozing with solid advice. Abadoning any sense of organization, fiction writing topics like "What's the most important key element in bestselling fiction?" and "Texturizing your novel" are scattered throughout. It deals with the normal story elements: plot, pacing, characters, point of view, etc. One of my favorite sections explained how to use Microsoft Word or WordPerfect to edit for readiblility. After finishing those sections, I checked out the advice by browsing a few first chapters of bestselling novels. Sure enough, what Smith said rang true. Another benefital component of this book that it explains how to plot your book in ten easy scenes, goes into detail on how to create scene cards, and how to pace each scene for maximum impact. There are a few things mentioned that you have probably heard before, but I'm willing to bet there's a few nuggets of practical wisdom that will help you polish your work. But my copy isn't available. I've decided to keep it.

This book is hands down the greatest handwriting book i have encountered (i have had at one time or the other more than 8 handwriting books). It is inspring and the results are clearly evident. He doesn't just stop at his book, he goes above and beyond in making you grow as a writer by recommending so other materials and books along the way. My writing has improved drastically (according to other people). One guy in my business college said my writing was the best he had ever seen. GET THIS BOOK NOW.

Calligraphy made easy.......2004-11-07

I am a beginner calligrapher taking classes, and my instructor is using the Fred Eager method of Italic and cursive writing. Since this book is out of print, I was determined to try and find a used copy, which I did, and I am thrilled to have a copy in my possession. I now don't have to ruin my eyes using bad copies and the book is in really good condition so that I am improving with every class and every homework assignment. A beautiful book and method for those who have an interest in improving their penmanship and producing beautifully written text.

Not recommended - "Advanced" my foot!.......1999-10-13

I'm sorry to say this book falls short of my expectations. I had hoped for some interesting tips/ techniques or unusual scripts - and I found none. Particularly disappointing are the example scripts which are very poorly executed - badly formed, irregular with sloppy spacing; hardly a good reference.
