Nice book on bears.......2007-09-05
My daughter and I read this as part of our study on grizzly bears for our literature study on the Little House books.
The pictures are wonderful, and the text gives good information on the different bears (polar, black and grizzly). The back section gives even more details that are useful to know about the bears - their habitat, food preferences, size details and so on. These facts are great for making little fact cards!
GREAT ADDITION TO A GREAT SERIES.......2007-08-15
This is a 1986 addition to the Books For Youg Explorers published by the
National Geographic Society. The book is about bears, specifically, baby bear and like the title says, "how they grow." The text and picturs start with the birth of a bear in mid winter and then follows it's development to adulthood. The pictures are typically National Geographic's first rate quality. Black Bears, Polar Bears and Grizzly Bears are all featured. The text is simple and to the point and quite well done. As I said, the photography is wonderful..great wildlife photography. These are obviously not tame bears in set-up situations, but the real thing, taken in the wild. This is a wonderful book for children (and adults) interested in bears and a great introduction. The book consisits of 32 pages and the photographs are in color. Highly recommend this one. It is a great read for the class room as well as one on one.

Old-time hiking guide.......2006-03-18
This is a no-nonsense, old-style guide to the Wind River Range. The author has been a guide there since the Great Depression. He provides some autobiographical information about his guiding business. He recounts, with pride, stocking high-mountain lakes that had never had fish before -- a practice that runs directly counter to today's views about preserving ecosystems.
The book is small (about 4x6 inches, 144 pages) with poor production values -- Courier font that has not been typeset, old black and white pictures, hand-drawn maps. It's organized by access point. You'll need a road map of the region to make sense of the directions, however, and there is no map of the Winds as a whole. There is elevation information for some peaks (not all), and no elevation for anything else.
The prose is straightforward. He tells you where the trail is, and how to follow it. Mitchell doesn't provide any information about why you might choose this route or that, this destination or that one. He just tells you that Trail X goes to point Y by route Z. There is no sorting of routes by day hikes, overnights, week trips, or the like, which have become standard in hiking guides.
Mitchell clearly knows every inch of these mountains well -- so well, in fact, that mileage information is irrelevant to him. So too is elevation, for the most part. Sometimes he'll tell you that "a Boy Scout troop would make this trip in two or three days," or similar information. He also sounds entirely credible when giving advice about likely snow conditions on peaks.
Standards for hiking books have changed. A LOT. Don't rely on this one all by itself, and buy a Wyoming map and topos for your route. But when I go to the Winds, I'll carry this little book in my pack. It's full of an old-timer's sharing of his wisdom.
An inspiring and informative guide to hiking the Winds.......2003-06-26
Finis Mitchell is the real thing; a true nature lover who hiked the Wind River Range so many times, that he can actually give you landmark by landmark directions to hikes, fishing and scaling peaks. He has a no-nonsense wisdom paired with a poetic nature. The story of how he stocked many of the lakes with trout is fascinating. Very clear routes to Gannet and Dinwoody Pass.
A hiking guide by the original Wind River mountain man.......2002-05-03
A hiking guide by the "elder statesman" Wind River mountain man. One of the highlights of this short book is the autobiographical sketch. Finis Mitchell has hiked the Wind Rivers since 1909, taken 105,345 pictures and has scaled 244 peaks. The book provides short descriptions of numerous hikes, gives directions to trailheads, and, for fishermen, describes the fish species that the lakes along the trails contain. Scattered throughout the book are poems and sayings by Mitchell. Only 144 pages long, the book lacks details found in other Wind River trail guides, but nonetheless is a gem.
Best book on Wind Rivers by man who explored every inch.......1999-06-25
Finis Mitchell (Author) is known as the ultimate authority on the Wind River Range (Wyoming). He began exploring the Wind Rivers as a teenager (1920s), later worked as a guide and outfitter there, planted most of the lakes with fish. Book is small (fits in backpack). Has maps (including USFS/USGS references), photos, very detailed written descriptions of trail systems in Wind Rivers. Marvelous detailed accounts of how he planted hundreds of lakes with Fish back in the 30s. Great detail on which trails are best for which purpose, etc. There are other, fancier, newer-style books on the Wind River Range, but only this book is written by a man who literally walked every single inch, scaled every peak, fished every lake in the entire range....the book is sort of a novelty item as well, in that it is actually printed in what looks like his original typewriter font...the maps are hand-drawn, but are actually more reliable in some ways that actual USGS maps of same area. FANTASTIC BOOK...A COLLECTORS ITEM..AND A VERY USEFUL TEXT AS WELL.

outdated.......2006-03-18
This would be an excellent and thorough book were it not nine years old. The information on cost of living is useless because so much has changed.
Just OK.......2004-11-28
The book is put together very well and is easy to read. Now for the negatives. Most of the information is old which makes it unusable. It's OK for a starting point, but you'll be going back to the internet for up-to-date information.
50 Fabulous Places to Raise Your Family by Giovagnoli.......2004-08-29
This book describes optimal places to live and retire. The author
describes the quality of life, local economy/jobs , entertainment and a plethora of other concerns. Fountain Hills, Arizona is listed for its jobs, no state income tax and quality of lifestyle. Gainesville Florida is listed as the most livable
city in the USA. Huntington, NY is listed as a preferred
suburb with good schools, beaches and vacation spots.
Charlottesville, VA. is praised for its scenary, affordable
housing, schools and educational centers. This book is a solid
value if you are researching an area unfamiliar to you.
Before you move anywhere, visit the locality, speak to residents and make up your own mind independent of what any book conveys.
Published in 1997 - Too Old & Dated!.......2003-10-25
I was excited to receive this book, but hadn't noticed in the product description that it was last published in 1997, and since it's nearly 2004, this book was not very helpful. The data is time sensitive (cost of living, populations, tax rates, home costs, school info, etc). Each city review had a nice "contact" list at the end, but one major thing missing were website addresses (which would've helped locate more recent data). Only the addresses & phone numbers were listed, and most were not toll-free numbers. Shame on me for not noticing the publication date, shame on Amazon.com for recommending it as a match with "The Places Rated Almanac" (the book found me, I wasn't looking for it specifically).
Inaccurate and way too subjective.......2003-10-11
We visited 10 of the communities listed, and are quite familiar with seven more of them. First, the authors seem to have a preference for non-pedestrian-friendly, car-oriented suburban sprawl. Second, I don't know where they got their info. We went so far as to move to one of the communities listed in the book, and after we got there we found out that the "excellent public schools" cited by these authors were ranked 48th in the country, and that there was very little for children to do. Health care was rated 47th in the country and was subpar, expensive and difficult to obtain. Not only that, the community was not friendly or welcoming to outsiders, and it was a most decidedly un-family-oriented environment. We stayed a year and left this town. We had not gone only on the basis of this book's recommendation, of course, but we had taken it into consideration as part of the total picture and it turned out to be extremely misleading.
Use with caution. If you want to relocate somewhere, visit the place, talk to folks, get the facts, trust your own judgment. Where to live is way too big a decision to trust to subjective opinions.
Book Description
The eighth-century Latin Gospelbook known as the Lindisfarne Gospels, with its tenth-century gloss (the earliest surviving translation of the Gospels into the English language), is one of the great landmarks of human cultural achievement. Like all such icons, or important archaeological sites, it repays revisiting. Successive generations approach them with new questions and new technologies, bringing to light fresh evidence or finding different ways of 'reading' what we thought we knew already. This study seeks to do just that, taking advantage of new photography and technical analysis as well as assessing previous work in the light of more recent studies and archaeological finds.
This book sets the Lindisfarne Gospels within its socio-historical context, during one of the world's formative periods of transition - from the Graeco-Roman world to that of the early Middle Ages. The melting-pot of the multi-ethnic British Isles, with its international Christian context stretching from Frisia to the near-East, is reflected in the pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels, as part of an attempt to achieve a cultural synthesis in which all peoples could find a place - a visual reflection of the international Oecumen. In Northumbria the rallying point for this new identity was the figure of St Cuthbert, his cult and the role of the church of Lindisfarne (originally a Celtic mission to the Anglo-Saxons) playing a vital role in the faith, power and politics of the region. The questions of where and when the Lindisfarne Gospels were made are addressed, but just as importantly the 'why' is explored, in the context of new research concerning the technical innovation of its maker, his spiritual motivation and the needs of the society in which he worked.

A Real Treasure.......2006-03-23
There is more than enough of interest for both scholar and intellectual tourist. Brown's sleuthing and exposition shed light on the Lindisfarne Gospels, sacred manuscripts in general, Insular art, and the place of important books through the ages. This is a read to be savored.
Great scholarship, decent reproductions of major pages.......2004-04-03
An excellent, in-depth scholarly study of a beautiful work of art. If you are interested in details about the paint, the layout, the artists, and the monastic world it was made in, then this is the book you want. The 32 color plates reproduce the major pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels, as well as examples from other Insular manuscripts. The CD that comes with this book contains a key to manuscript sigla, and a table showing the textual arrangement of the Lindisfarne Gospels, with selective collation. The CD does not contain any further plates of the manuscript, unless they are hidden where I cannot access them.
A thought-provoking and informatively extensive study.......2003-10-07
The Lindisfarne Gospels: Society, Spirituality & The Scribe by Celtic and Anglo-Saxon cultural history expert Michelle P. Brown (Curator of Illuminated Manuscripts at The British Library), examines this important and influential eighth-century book in the light of both theological analysis and revelations of the latest archaeological finds. Marvelous color plates as well as black-and-white photographs wonderfully enhance the exhaustive, college-level text, which is a master piece of scholarship studying the genesis of the Lindisfarne Gospels, and how this classic was originally physically prepared, written, and bound, as well as the significance of its art, the nuances of its scripted text, and more. A thought-provoking and informatively extensive study, The Lindisfarne Gospels is also available in a soft-cover format.
Customer Reviews:
Easy to read study of an illuminated manuscript.......2000-09-13
The scope of this book is best described by the chapter titles: 1) Lindisfarne and Saint Cuthbert 2) The men who made the manuscript 3) The text of the Gospels 4) The script 5) How the manuscript was made 6) The great decorated pages 7) The smaller initials 8) Some comparisons (with contemporary works) 9) The later history of the manuscript
The text is lively, including, for example, an old riddle describing the wax table used for sketches. The Anglo-Saxom instruments used in illuminations are shown in a photograph; you aren't expected to have detailed knowledge of medieval tools. The color plates of the Gospels are magnificant. The art shown for comparison includes not only other manuscripts but metalwork etc.
This book is not only an introduction to the Lindisfarne Gospels but is a good starting point for illuminated manuscripts in general.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful photos.......2007-03-20
An interesting history of the art of hand printing books. Fantastic pictures.
A real gem.......2004-10-27
In a mere 48 pages, author Michelle Brown, currator of illuminated manuscripts at the British Library, has put together a wonderful expose of the Lindisfarne Gospels, one of the beautiful illuminated productions to come out of the Irish monastic/scholarly traditions of the so-called Dark Ages. One can wonder how an age that could produce such exquisite books as the Lindisfarne Gospel could ever be called 'dark'.
The Lindisfarne Gospel is a piece of art, and a piece of history. It is a significant milestone in the history of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon development. Brown's book has illuminations of a more modern sort on every page, pictures and graphics, illustrating the beauty, grandeur, and history of this great work. The Lindisfarne Gospels helped to define Christianity for the local culture, connecting it with the larger world of Christendom.
The Lindisfarne Gospels' artistry lies not only in the beautiful pages, but in great attention to detail throughout. The colours and pages, the hinges and covers, the stitching and construction all testify to an unparalleled care for craftsmanship. The influences of Celtic and Anglo-Saxon imagery is clearly seen in the illuminations and construction, which in turn influenced the further development of those traditions. The calligraphy was influenced by Roman, Greek and Germanic lettering, blending things together in an astonishingly complementary way.
This book would be a gem for the pictures alone; with the brief, insightful text by Michelle Brown, the book becomes a real gift to the reader.

Book Description
The Lindisfarne Gospels is an eighth-century masterpiece of Celtic illumination. After careful study, Aidan Meehan has beautifully redrawn more than fifty designs that appear on its pages. Each one has been taken from its amazingly intricate background, often extricated from other entangled ornaments, and enlarged. The original manuscript page from which each design is derived is provided so you can refer to reproductions of the gospel book and see the decorative style and colors used by the scribes in the eighth century. Based on the four types of pattern in the Lindisfarne Gospels--knotwork, spirals, mazes, and animal patterns, with special emphasis on the jewel-like birds and dogs--the drawings range from simple to complex and will inspire you to try out your own painting techniques and color schemes. Artists, designers, craftspeople, and anyone fascinated by the Celtic legacy will find this an invaluable work of reference and pleasure.
