The Book of Decorative Knots
ASIN: 0715318314 |
Book Description
The step-by-step photographic guide to knots, plaits, mats and toggles for both practical and decorative uses.
Here is the ultimate knot book. Usually the difficulty in learning to tie knots is that the demonstrator is facing you and the procedure is therefore being shown back-to-front. Here the reader can see the bights and tucks of each stage of each knot as if he or she were tying it, making the entire process explicitly clear.
The book demonstrates, stage by stage and in 323 photographs, the tying of ninety-five knots, hitches, plaits, bends, rope and wire splices, sennits and decorative ropework mats, covering all the basics that yachtsmen or other outdoor sports enthusiasts need to be familiar with, and at the same time acknowledging the artistry of the Turk's Head, crown knots and ocean mats. The nature of rope and its lay are explained in the introduction to a book that will enable the tiro to become competent quickly and old hands to explain their expertise, be it during long winter evenings or as a pastime in the cockpit. Here, in fifty-one lessons, is knotting without tears - a happy combination of instruction and entertainment.

The Complete Book of Knots and Ropework.......2006-03-09
Very good book on knots. Lots of pictures to explain how they are made. I would recommend this book.
Dangerous Knots!.......2005-04-06
Like another reviewer, I am dismayed by the inclusion of faulty and potentially life-threatening knots. The Carrick Bend is shown two ways. The first way is not a true carrick bend and is actually said to be one of the worst knots known (re Ashley Book of Knots, pg 263 knot # 1445). The only knots worthy in this book are the decorative knots (don't trust the practical knots).
Dangerous.......2000-07-15
Along with an underwhelming selection of knots, bends, and hitches, it includes a dangerous knot described by the author as the "Binder Turn" and doesn't mention that it doesn't hold and is unreliable. This alone makes this book a liability and not an asset. Note to author: The reason that bend is "lesser known" is because it is garbage.
Excellent opportunity for novice and experienced knot-makers.......1998-10-08
As a Scoutmaster, it is important to me to have the perfect knot for every occasion. In our Troop I have initiated a Knot-tying award that the Scouts can earn called the Order of the Knot. This book, which I keep as a reference, allows the Scouts to find new knots and practice them using the many photographs and very clear and understandable text. I have also found the information about decorative rope work interesting to try myself, and have found that it keeps me one step ahead of the Scouts, always "raising the bar" in their knot-tying education. I believe that there will always be opportunities to use the useful information in this book, and it will start the Scouts on a lifetime appreciation of this creative and useful skill. Mr. Fry has gone a long way toward opening a new vista for anyone who believes that rope can be fun and attractive, as well as useful!

Knot books donýt get any better or simpler than this........2001-06-16
This is the best knot book out for sailors and a great knot book for everyday users.
So, how many knots does one need to know to sail safely? Some say as few as three, but Budworth shows you how to tie over 60 nautical knots, each with step-by-step color instructions. He has an excellent introduction that covers history, tools, terms, material and construction of cord. Each of the diagrams has the knots history, application and a written instruction that 99% of the time is not needed. Budworth breaks down sailing knots into five sections: Stoppers, Loops, Bends, Hitches and Others. Finally, he gives you a glossary, a bibliography of numerous knotting manuals, and tells you how you can join `The International Guild of Knot Tyers". The only thing missing is a section on knot jokes.
Knot books don't get any better or simpler than this. If you are going to buy one book to learn to tie knots this is the one. Highly recommended

My "Go To" book for knots.......2007-05-20
I bought this book in Escalante, Utah, when doing my first canyoneering excursion. I have seen many other books since, but this remains my favorite.
1) It has very clear pictures that make it easy to follow the instructions
2) As other reviewers have written, each knot has a little history blurb about it. Nice touch!
3) The book is organized logically - by use (boating, fishing, caving, etc.)
4) The book contains more knots than you could ever possibly want to know.
Highly recommend to someone looking for a "One Stop" knot book.
My Son the Sailor Loved This book.......2007-04-11
I bought this book for my son, who is a sailor and lives aboard his sailboat. He said it was great. I didn't see it, but for that application, it was just what he was looking for.
Great selection.......2007-03-14
I liked this book because of the shear number of knots included in it. Some of the illustrations are a little hard to follow, but most of them I had no problem with. I also think the small blurb on the history of each knot is pretty cool.
A Good Knot Book.......2005-08-21
This book gives clearly illustrated instructions on tying many very useful knots. It organizes them under headings of Sailing, Hiking and Climbing in which they are most commonly used. The author includes the strength of most of these knots which describes how much they weaken the lines in which they are tied - often leaving less than 50% of the original strength of the line! Some knots do not hold well when bending (you will learn the definition of this term, as well as "hitch" and "knot") together two ropes of unequal size. Maybe you should use a different knot? Budworth has a suggestion!
This book is both useful and interesting thanks to the inclusion of a brief history of each knot. It did not change my life, but it did change how I secure my anchors! I recommend it!
A nice introduction to the world of knots..........2001-02-24
I bought this book for my husband for Christmas, and we've both come to like it very much. Neither of us are "knot aficionados", as it were, but wanted a book which would allow us to explore some knots we might need in our outdoor activities (horseback riding, camping, sailing, etc.) As the beginners at knotmaking we are, this book has proven to be excellent for us.
At the very beginning the book has a directory of the knots contained, listed by name, page number, application (sailing, caving, climbing, and so on), and description. In the introduction the book covers a number of topics: knotlore; terms, tips, and techniques; ends; and tips on using the book. In the main part of the book, each knot has a small photo of a finished knot, an explanation of the application of the knot, numerous diagrams showing the knot being tied, a description of the tying of the knot, and a brief history of the knot itself.
I really don't understand why some of the other reviewers feel so strongly about this book, as a neophyte to the world of knots, I found it more than adequate, and it served my needs well. And I find my husband returning to it again and again, as he slowly falls under the spell of knots, well on his way to becoming a true knot geek. If you're a beginner looking for a practical guide to knotmaking, this book will suit you well.

Customer Reviews:
Should be called "CA Bay Area Bride Guide".......2007-06-27
This guide has a TON of ideas for weddings in the CA Bay Area/wine country, but VERY slim on any other places in Northern California. Great if you are a SF Bride, but bad if you are above Napa.
Good book but run by advertising.......2005-03-27
I just pinned down a wedding venue, and I found this book helpful, with a few caveats. Firstly, brides-to-be should know that every venue in the book must pay "Here Comes the Guide" to be included. This engenders a lack of objectivity for the writers judging these locations. I am a travel writer myself so I felt a litle cheated by not having access to a trustworthy critical eye in the site reviews. Secondly, I was frustrated with the lack of photographs and felt the "Here Comes the Guide" website was much more helpful in this regard. All the locations in the book are online, and it's free there.
I actually found a gorgeous venue in Mendocino that wasn't included in the book or website. Just remember while "Here Comes the Guide" is a good place to start, you can find rare gems and less-travelled venues that aren't in the book. Talk to friends and experts who have gone to a lot of weddings. Another good place to look is the Chamber of Commerce website of the city in which you're planning to get married.
The Book that Saved My Wedding.......2001-07-28
I absolutely dreaded planning my wedding and this book was the only thing that saved my fiance and I from spiraling into madness. We are both from the East Coast, relatively new to the Bay area, and had no family here to help us. Neither one of us had ever been married before or helped plan a wedding. Here Comes the Guide was the single most useful tool for planning our wedding, and is reliable enough that we didn't feel the need to interview a ridiculous number of vendors for each service before choosing one. If a vendor we liked was recommended by the book then we knew they had to be good. Here Comes the Guide is concise, recommends cool traditional and non-traditional reception sites, and provides all of the information you need to plan your own wedding without the help of a wedding planner. The only area which was lacking was limousines and transportation. Pretty much everything else, including bands, calligraphy, invitations, cakes, vendors, tuxedos, reception sites, and florists, was there in abundance.
A must have for all N. CA Brides.......2001-02-27
I was given this book as a gift soon after my engagement. At the time, I hadn't given much thought to where I wanted to hold the event. This book was a great help in finding several locations that were ideal. As the wedding market in Northern CA is rather busy, it was very nice to have several choices so that we could find a venue that was availible on our desired date.
This book contains accurate descriptions of venues, with information pertianing to the size, cost, and other key factors. It also contains less important but still useful information on catering options at each venue, music limitations, and other factors which can help a bride and groom say yea or nea to a location that is still site unseen.
I called over 20 phone numbers in this book and all were up to date and correct. I also found the pricing information almost dead on. The black and white pictures also gave an accurate impression of the venues.
This book was essential to my planning of a wine country wedding and I highly recommend it to anyone that is arranging a wedding in the bay area.
A wonderful book if you live north of San Jose.......1999-09-21
If you're looking for a nice synopsis of places in the bay area - this is the book for you. Just don't expect more than you'd find in the Phone book if you're in the South Bay.

Here Comes the Guide: Southern California: Wedding Locations and Services (Here Comes the Bride Series).......2007-01-04
Wonderful book, a must have!
The Guide screens its recommended vendors.......2000-12-10
While the bulk of the Guide is dedicated to reception site listings, the vendor listings in the back are very helpful. The listings are not mere "paid advertisements." If you read the book, The Guide explains how each vendor undergoes a thorough screening process--something even the most persistent bride likely wouldn't have the time or ability to conduct.
As The Guide states on Page 483, their process "involves interviewing 15-20 other event professionals. We call every single reference and ask about the professionalism, technical competency and service orientation of the advertiser in question. ... Those candidates who received consistent, rave reviews made it into The Guide."
Using The Guide as a starting point (combined with the internet, magazine ads, and friends' recommendations), I conducted exhaustive research of my own of wedding professionals in Los Angeles and beyond. I wound up hiring three vendors who had been featured in the Guide (caterer, band and florist, 11-11-00 wedding). All performed beyond my greatest expectations, and my guests cannot stop raving about the "fabulous," "amazing," and "out of this world" food, music, and flowers. Clearly, The Guide got it right.
So don't be fooled by the relative size of the vendor section compared to pages allotted to reception sites. The vendor section may be small because they are the cream of the crop, thanks to the Guide's legwork.
A Bride's Best Friend!.......2000-02-19
This has been an invaluable book during my wedding planning. When I got engaged in December 99, a girlfriend suggested that I buy the SoCal edition immediately to start finding reception and ceremony locations. I did buy it, and whipped through the whole book one evening. Sitting there reading, I quickly dismissed reception site after site and determined that the book just couldn't help me. I put it aside.
Then I started actually going out, visiting places, and realizing that it wasn't so easy to find the perfect place! I quickly realized I was going to have to work a lot harder than I thought to mesh the right church location, my number of people, and a convenient indoor reception site. So I came back to the Guide--time and again! Soon I had it dogeared and filled with notes as I reconsidered the options I'd been so quick to skip past earlier. The statistics on each site helped keep me focused and helped me and my fiance consider new places when others fell through, and keep the attributes of each place in mind. The descriptions of the reception sites are detailed, positive and generous-but-not-misleading. We ultimately booked a site listed in the Guide and are thrilled to have found it.
Now that I've moved on to choosing a photographer, I went to the Guide again. First I read through each photographer's profile in the book, then went on the Guide's website! It's so easy to use - - it allows you to jump to photographers' websites and see their portfolios, all without making appointments or driving around! I feel satisifed that I don't need to look beyond the professionals listed in the Guide, since the authors have already done the legwork in finding people with high standards and good customer service.
If you really want to explore all possible options for your ceremony, reception, and event professionals, you will love Here Comes The Guide! The hardcopy book and the website are thorough, pleasant to read, and - - most importantly - - really helpful. My mom keeps saying, "I had no idea it was this complicated to plan a wedding in this day and age!" Here Comes the Guide goes a long way towards relieving the complication!
A real lifesaver!!.......1999-04-19
I am so glad that a friend told me about this book. I was so daunted by the search for a location for my wedding, I didn't know where to start. This book (and their fantastic website by the same name) made it really easy. They give great descriptions and the pricing information helped me narrow down the places I could afford. It saved me so much time, I was able to actually enjoy looking for a reception location. Thank you, Here Comes the Guide.
Excellent! A SoCal bride's first absolute necessity!.......1998-08-04
This book is exactly what I wanted when I first got engaged, but it took me a few weeks to find it. I have only lived in LA for 2 years and knew there were so many more wedding and reception locations than were advertised in magazines and phone books, and I was right. This book lists each and every place in Southern California with extremely detailed facility descriptions, pricing structures, restrictions, what's included, and interesting information and trivia about some of the places. Everything is here, from 5 star hotels to remote locations where you bring-your-own everything. This book is an absolute must for the couple who wants a wedding and/or reception location that fits their style exactly. The only drawback is that there are so many places to choose from, it will take longer than you might have expected to finally choose a location!

Chinese Calligraphy: An Introduction to Its Aesthetic and Technique, Third Revised and Enlarged Edition

Could the prominent appearance of large, boldly brushed Chinese characters on the cover of House & Garden magazine (May 1999) signal that Americans are ready to appreciate the ancient but often modern-looking art of calligraphy? The Embodied Image offers both stellar examples of Chinese calligraphy and tools with which to view it. And it successfully bridges the gap between the non-Chinese reader's concern over incomprehension, the modernist's appreciation of calligraphy as linear abstraction, and the traditional connoisseur's approach.
Edited by art historians Robert Harrist and Wen C. Fong and with contributions from 11 other scholars, the volume documents the calligraphy collection of Princeton University's Art Museum, which Fong calls "the only collection outside China and Japan that properly represents the sixteen-hundred-year history of this highly prized ... art form." Filled with marvels ranging from one of the earliest known fragments of the classic text Tao Te Ching to letters and scrolls by artists who are the Rembrandts and Picassos of the medium, The Embodied Image presents Chinese calligraphy in terms of brushwork, as text, as the expression of the writer's personal cultivation, and as the underpinning of later (if not all) Chinese painting.
There's plenty of ink play for the eye to dance over: fluid, angular, stiff, or scratchy. The accompanying texts--two introductory essays on calligraphic history and theory and eight specialized ones, with various levels of detail--allow readers to choose their own depth. But the visual "text" alone is illuminating and provides pleasure. The 55 featured works, dating from 270 to the 1870s, are divided into seven groups, with short historical introductions preceding the works (reproduced in color and nuanced duotone). Four hundred more illustrations, including character comparisons, are enormously helpful, as is the labeling of the parts of a 12-foot scroll assembled over several centuries around a traced copy of a two-line fragment of a letter by the most influential calligrapher of all, Wang Hsi-chih.
The book was published for an exhibition at Princeton University in 1999, touring New York and Seattle through 2001, but The Embodied Image will long contribute to the understanding of an art that is itself more than two millennia old. --Joseph Newland
Customer Reviews:
Private collection catalogue.......2003-05-15
At 1st of May,2003, in Osaka municipal Museum, Japan, I appreciated the travelling exhibition including this John B. Elliott Collection.
This traced copy scroll of a two-line fragment of a letter by Wang Hsi-chih(ACE303-361) is fine. Atouched Dong Quichang(1555-1636) colophones and large character maximes calligraphy are impressive. Sung dynasty Emperor Hui-Tsong(r. 1101-1125) court mounting and seals seem genuine. The Wang calligraphy itself has enough quality among many his old replicas. The ink colour feels rather later period than 8th century.
Another impressive work is Zhu Yunming(ACE1460-1526)'s small square script
album.
However, this is a private and personal collection catalogue. Reading this, one imagines and looks for passed Mr. Elliott's personality and taste.
It is too heavy burden for this collection to act as a textbook of great chinese calligraphy history.
Indeed there is few museum whose collection is completely genuine, I recommend chinese-calligraphy lovers in USA to appreciate, study and learn masterpieces in National Palace Museum, Taipei, First.
Japanese collections also have masterpieces.
Great Book.......2002-12-15
Most major styles are presented in this wonderfully printed book. The articles are informatory and scholarly. This fine collection of calligraphy is intoxicatingly beautiful.
A Different Way of Thinking About the Written Word.......2001-05-30
What fascinates me so much about this book, what keeps drawing me to it, is this: the calligraphers of ancient China wrote as they painted, and painted as they wrote. In other words, each character is an "embodied image" which expresses the moods and passions of its creator.
When we Westerners read, we read for content, for meaning only. We do not read and at the same time notice how the characters look. Since Gutenberg and the advent of movable type, and especially now, with digital type, each of our characters must always look the same. When they don't, it is considered an imperfection. In Chinese calligraphy, however, considerable attention is given to how the characters look. It is through their appearance that we can discern the whether the creator was hurried, what angle he wrote at, and what mood he might have been in.
The visual effect of a poem written by a great Chinese calligrapher a thousand years ago, vs. reading the same poem in a standardized font, is quite stark. We have a lot to learn from the Chinese, especially given their likely ascension of global power in the coming years. This book provides an indispensable, detailed, well illustrated reference for an important aspect of how Chinese culture differs so dramatically from our own.
Highly recommended.
more please.......2000-03-16
A handsome book, with excellent production values. The text is well presented, and the reproductions a treat for lovers of Chinese calligraphy. The compare-and-contrast of the different calligraphic styles is satisfying to read and follow. A useful overview.

Book Description
This book focuses on the significance of the body in contemporary feminist scholarship. Whether the body is treated as biological bedrock or subversive metaphor, it is implicated in the cultural and historical construction of sexual difference as well as asymmetrical power relations. The contributors to this volume examine the role of the body as socially shaped and historically colonized territory and as the focus of individual womenÆs struggles for autonomy and self-determination. They also analyze its centrality to the feminist critique of male-stream science as dualistic, distanced, and decontextualized. While the body has become a "hot item" in contemporary social theory and research, the renewed interest has received a mixed reaction from feminists. The body may be back, but the "new" body theory often proves to be just as disembodied as it ever was. The body revival seems to be less an attempt to re-embody masculinist science than just another expression of the same condition that evoked the feminist critique in the first place: a flight from femininity and everything that is associated with it in Western culture. Drawing on insights from contemporary feminist theories of gender and power, this book offers a timely critical appraisal of the recent "body revival." Embodied Practices not only sets an agenda for research about the body, but for an embodied perspective on the body as well. It will be a valuable and thought-provoking resource for students of womenÆs studies, social theory, cultural studies, and medical sociology.
