The Oysters of Locmariaquer (P.S.)
ASIN: 0140247998 |
Book Description
Once seen as a dark and sinister force, the domain of monsters, the sea was associated with catastrophe and fear by many Europeans prior to the eighteenth century. Alain Corbin's engaging book reveals how attitudes toward the ocean gradually began to shift from the negative to the positive, so that by the mid-1800s our present-day salubrious notion of the seashore had come into being.
Going back to ancient times, Corbin describes conceptions of the sea in relationship to how people thought and felt about their place in the world. He then shows how the Enlightenment and changing attitudes in science, literature, and art affected notions of the sea. Ocean bathing came to be seen as therapeutic, the sea was linked with the creation of life, and the shore became a locale for self-exploration and reverie. Discovery of the seaside had political, economic, and social effects, too. The shore as a place of pleasure led to the rapid growth of British coastal towns such as Brighton, followed by other resorts in Europe. All of this Corbin lays out in wonderful detail, blending history, theory, and anecdote into an absorbing whole.
The Lure of the Sea suggests the fashioning of a modern sensibility in the West's discovery of the shore--one that is health-conscious and intent on regeneration through vigorous contact with nature. Written by one of today's most literate and imaginative historians, it offers an inviting cultural excursion for scholars and general readers alike.

Presents the inner meaning and techniques of T'ai Chi movements through translations of three essential texts which together are often considered the "T'ai Chi Bible." Includes practical instructions and illustrations for the entire sequence of movements
Customer Reviews:
A good explanation of the philosophy and intent of Tai Chi.......2007-01-10
This book has less to do with the physical part of Tai Chi practice and more of the history and philosophy of the art. The author explains such concepts as Chi, Jing, and their uses for martial arts applications. The Tai Chi classics are translated here with explanation and additional comments. I found these first sections of the book especially useful. The book concludes with a description of the form - but I do not recommend learning Tai Chi from a book; seek out a qualified instructor.
Tai Chi Internal work.......2006-11-03
This book contains very important notes on internal work.
For me, they cover some "blind spots" wich I can not find in
numerous other Tai Chi sources.
It is one of the best Tai Chi books!!!
Great book, but read his other one first...........2005-11-09
While this is a great translation of the classics, and has a good history and perspective on Taichi, the jump into cultivating and applying Jing is fairly advanced. I recommend reading his new book "Chi-How to Feel Your Life Energy" first, and then Taichi Classics...whether you are a beginner or advanced practitioner. Why? Because in it, he gives a thorough overview of Chi, where it comes from, how Taichi helps strengthen and purify life energy, and why this is important for health and spiritual development, and also discusses applications of Chi -- such as martial arts and healing-- . These fundamental yet profound concepts will give you a better feel for the internal art perspective Liao is coming from. His newer books, even Nine Nights With a Taoist Master, are available here now, so you don't have to go through insiders or other websites to get them. Just do a search on this site.
Some useful commentaries.......2005-08-18
After a brief consideration of the history and origins of tai chi, the author proceeds to explicate the most important principles of tai chi through a presentation of the three most important tai chi classics, along with modern commentary written by the author. I found his elaborations on the more condensed and sometimes cryptic sentences and paragraphs in the original classics very helpful, and in fact, most of the text in these chapters is actually his, not the classics themselves. The chapter on jin theory and its many types and their nature and applications was also excellent.
Ultimately, no book on tai chi can really capture its full essence and complexity but this book I thought did a good job of trying to explain it in understandable terms. The author's explanations and claims about the physics weren't always correct, and one has to take with a grain of salt the idea that ch'i can travel faster than light, but then I don't expect tai chi instructors to be that knowledgeable on western physics. It's just the way it is. (As I am a western trained scientist I can figure that part out for myself). But the author's treatment of the other aspects of tai chi was much better in my humble opinion and I enjoyed the book for that.
The essence of Tai Chi from a *true* master.......2005-07-09
SIMPLY, ONE OF THE 3 BEST BOOKS ON ORIGINAL TAI CHI AND INTERNAL POWER I'VE EVER FOUND.
(The other 2 best books are Master Liao's recent works which just became widely available in '05. For example, his "Nine Nights with a Taoist Master--DSE" was life-transforming and practice-transforming. But reading this "Tai Chi Classics" essentially set the stage for me .)
Tai Chi Classics gives one the definitions and conceptual understanding needed to grasp the energy dynamics of Tai Chi. (The acutal Tai Chi forms are best learned person-to-person in classes from a qualified teacher or second-best via a video.) It covers the roots of Tai Chi in Taoist wisdom, the actions of the Yin and Yang powers, and the processes for developing one's Chi, refining it into Jing, and applying it in various ways, such as transfer power.
The core of the book is perhaps the best part. In addition to providing English translations of the three classic texts of Tai Chi, it offers insightful commentary on each passage---written by one who has practiced & experienced these things (as opposed to, say, commentary by a linguistic scholar who has never practiced Tai Chi). Highly Recommended.

Book Description
Based on a vast range of club and association records, Pay Up and Play the Game presents the first systematic economic analysis of the emergence of mass spectator sport during the years prior to World War I. It explores the tensions behind an increasingly commercialised activity that was nonetheless suffused with â~gentlemanlyâ values at many levels, and highlights the retreat of the latter as working-class consumption and participation became predominant, symbolised most dramatically by the celebrated victory of proletarian Blackburn Olympic over the Old Etonians in the FA Cup final of 1883. Wray Vamplew examines the linkages between sport, gambling, crime and spectator violence, and concludes that many supposedly â~recentâ developments (notably football hooliganism) in fact have their origins in this, the â~Golden Ageâ of sport in Britain.
Book Description
John F. Gilbey exposes wrestling as a series of circus exhibitions and decries boxing as an unbalanced martial art, the true purpose of which is to maim. In place of the fake performances of the Hulks of the modern ring, Gilbey offers the great ones, from George Hackenschmidt through Frank Gotch, to the Great Gama, and Ghulam.
Customer Reviews:
A slight disappointment........1998-09-15
Fans of Gilbey will recognize and appreciate his unique style of storytelling, and will definitely want to add this one to their collection. However, be forewarned that this work falls far short of the excellent marks set by his previous writings. Gone are the in-depth and entertaining anecdotes of Gilbey's experiences in the world of self-defense and fighting arts. Instead we are taken on a shallow, whirlwind tour of boxing and wrestling history. The boxing section offers little new historical information other than a few of Gilbey's personal anecdotes. Those seeking technical inspiration ala "Secret Fighting Arts of the World" are urged to read elsewhere. The wrestling section is the better of the two. It has some good historical information on the old shooters and hookers, and grappling fans can enjoy some in-depth recounts of historic matches. The section on Indo-Pakistani wrestlers is excellent, but not quite on par with Smith and Draeger's account in "Comprehensive Asian Fighting Arts". In addition, the information on Far Eastern methods is very light, but probably because of the enormous work that already exists on the subject. Fans of Brazilian style grappling will find no mention of this potent modern influence on fighting and martial arts. Overall, this is a unique and informative book, but die-hard fans of Gilbey (of which I count myself) will probably be disappointed.

Face the North Wind (Western Canadian Classic)
ASIN: 1894856198
Release Date: 2003-02-14 |
Book Description
Originally published in 1970,
North to Cree Lake is the true story of two brothers who embark on the adventure of a lifetime. The onset of the Great Depression meant there were few opportunities for young men on the prairies, so the pair decided to pursue their dream of trapping in the North.
This is a vividly recounted tale of life in the northern Saskatchewan wilderness, "the old North, land of mystery and deep silences" only accessible by canoe in summer, by dog team in winter, or by aircraft. The young men embrace the challenges of travelling in the North, and not only survive, but thrive.
North to Cree Lake is full of fascinating details about everyday life in the North - what they ate, how they travelled, how to prepare moose nose - and offers insights into the men who chose to live in such an isolated and perilous region. Karras wrote
North to Cree Lake many years after he left northern Saskatchewan, but the clarity of his memories is remarkable, as is his deep love of the North.
A farmer's assistant for $2 a day, a grain buyer, and ultimately a school administrator,
Arthur Karras no longer hunted when he returned to civilization but continued to fish. The writing of
North to Cree Lake occupied his thoughts for many years. Karras lived in Indian Head, Saskatchewan, with his wife and two sons, and wrote one other non-fiction book.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent book.......2005-08-19
I originally obtained this book through interlibrary loan several years ago. Now it has been reprinted so I bought my own copy and read it again. I've gone on canoeing trips in this beautiful area of Saskatchewan.
When the author and his older brother were in their late teens they went north to become trappers for seven years rather than try to find work during the Depression. Each chapter deals with a different aspect of life in the bush such as trapping, the meals they ate, the indians, bears, etc.
A.L. Karras also wrote "Face the North Wind", also about trapping in northern Saskatchewan. This is also a fine book that has been reprinted.
Unbelievably awesome book!!!.......2003-10-24
I LOVED THIS BOOK,it was one of the few that I got upset over because it ended. I could of kept reading and found myself wanting more. Luckily he has another book that I will get my hands on. Being a Saskatchewan resident, I was familiar with alot of the lakes and towns that he lived and traveled. (Camping at several of the lakes he mentioned)
I enjoyed his writing style, decriptions and stories, which take place in the far north during the 1930's. I loved the fact that he went off memory and when he remembered no more about a paticular experiance, he moved on to the next memory. He just told it like it was. I felt like I could see everything through his eyes, feel the cold they endured, and the "pin drop" quiet of the north. I would highly recommend this book!
North to Cree Lake.......2000-06-17
Art Karras' book, about he and his brothers trapping career in northern Saskatchewan is quite factual and certainly illustrates the trials and tribulations faced by the old-time trappers and adventurers in the 1920s and 1930s....
Trapping in northern saskatchewan in the 1930's.......1998-06-12
Will be enjoyed by anyone who likes to read about life in the wilderness as it was about 60 years ago. A very matter of fact book that I found very interesting .
pure frontier history - two young men alone in the wilds.......1997-11-03
I read this book while working on a mineral exploration survey in Northern Saskatchewan in 1974. The author and his brother preceded me by some 50-80 years. However many things about this wonderful part of Canada had not changed and it was easy to identify and imagine being with these fellows as they learned how to live and trap in the bush.... The writing is quite plain; but as the events are real they carry the book... (imagine your bro going lala while you are 500 miles away from the nearest civilizatioin...) Highly reconmended for anyone who loves the wilderness and adventure.... I believe I still have a copy kicking around here somewhere... Does anyone know how many copies where printed?
Book Description
The Pacific Coast League had emerged from the Depression of the 1930s in fairly good condition. There were four new ball parks: Seals Stadium in San Francisco in 1931, Lane Field in San Diego in 1936, Sick's Stadium in Seattle in 1938 and Gilmore Field in Hollywood in 1939. But after the attack on Pearl Harbor, there was some doubt that baseball would be allowed to operate during the war.
This work focuses on the 1942 to 1945 seasons offering final standings and details associated with the ballparks as well as the players. The appendix includes records of individual players listed by club and by year. The clubs are listed in order of finish.

Book Description
Jim Ring tells the story of the English love affair with the Alps, from its beginnings in the early Romantic movement, through the formation of the Alpine Club, to the interwar years and the development of downhill skiing.
Customer Reviews:
A good read.......2003-12-22
"How the English Made the Alps" pretty much achieves exactly what the title suggests. The book provides an excellent chronological account of how English visitors started by exploring and climbing in the Alps, and then went on through "health tourism" and the pursuit of winter sports to develop the region commercially.
Ring has clearly done pretty exhaustive research into the topic, particularly on the conquests of various mountain peaks. He conveys the initial scientific endeavour that spurred climbers on, and also manages to communicate the eccentricity of pursuing alpine "conquest" once the scientific rationale had disappeared.
Given the title, there is a strong Anglo-bias to the writing which perhaps underplays some of the contributions from other countries - foreign climbers are seen generally in the light of competitors and foils for English advances. Again, with the constraints of the title, there is little of the early history of the region in the volume. These are minor quibbles, however, in what is overall a very good account. It is a shame that Fleming's "Killing Dragons" was published so close to this - you wait years for a decent account of the development of the Alps, and then two come along at once. There is enough difference between the two, however, that readers will benefit from reading both.

I believe this os the best book for pronouncing american english because this book includes intonation. Q:I went to heinle publishers' site. They said The last publish of this book is for 3 years ago How do you have the 99 December?
[Additional] tape cost not included!.......2000-03-18
Though the book is good, there is no mention of the [additional] cost for the tapes! There are other books that are good enough and come with tapes. The tapes are good to have, but not at that price. There are plenty of other books available that come with tapes...
Excelent book to teach or to learn English phonetics.......1999-03-27
I have found this book very clear and easy to follow by anyone wishing to improve his English pronunciation. The examples and exercises are excellent, specially the contrast ones. The explanations and practices about stress and intonation are very useful and easy to understand. This book was given to me without the tapes which I have not been able to get. I am sure that these tapes are a necessary complement to this book.
