Book Description
While baseball is traditionally perceived as a game to be played, enjoyed, and reported from a masculine perspective, it has long been beloved among women—more so than any other spectator sport. Breaking into Baseball: Women and the National Pastime upends baseball’s accepted history to at last reveal just how involved women are, and have always been, in the American game.
Through provocative interviews and deft research, Jean Hastings Ardell devotes a detailed chapter to each of the seven ways women participate in the game—from the stands as fans, on the field as professionals or as amateur players, behind the plate as umpires, in the front office as executives, in the press box as sportswriters and reporters, or in the shadows as Baseball Annies. From these revelatory vantage points, Ardell invites overdue appreciation for the affinity and talent women bring to baseball at all levels and shows us our national game anew.
From its ancient origins in spring fertility rituals through contemporary marketing efforts geared toward an ever-increasing female fan base, baseball has always had a feminine side, and generations of women have sought—and been sought after—to participate in the sport, even when doing so meant challenging the cultural mores of their era. In that regard, women have been breaking into baseball from the very beginning. But recent decades have witnessed great strides in legitimizing women’s roles on the diamond as players and umpires as well as in vital management and media roles. In her thoughtfully organized and engagingly written survey, Ardell offers a chance for sports enthusiasts and historians of both genders to better appreciate the storied and complex relationship women have so long shared with the game and to glimpse the future of women in baseball.
Breaking into Baseball is augmented by twenty-four illustrations and a foreword from
Ila Borders, the first woman to play more than three seasons of men’s professional baseball.

"Breaking Into Baseball" Breaks New Ground.......2005-09-28
Just when you think anything and everything has been written about baseball, along comes this book. Ms. Ardell approaches the subject from all angles, including some I never thought of, and I've been around the game as a journalist for several years. Her research is particularly impressive, with details such as the first female umpire to sign a game scorecard. Professional baseball is one of the last bastions of male chauvinism, and Ms. Ardell reminds us that the national pastime isn't quite as national as we'd like to believe. Definitely worth a five-star rating; I'll be sending out this book as gifts to people in the business with the hope that it opens not just eyes but minds and hearts too.
Engaging and Inspirational.......2005-05-04
Jean Hastings Ardell has captured the essence of the connection between baseball and women in her well-written and thoroughly-researched chapters. Whether they are men or women, fans or players, readers will enjoy her fast-paced writing, her sense of perspective, her conscientious scholarship, and her sense of humor. Ms. Ardell's love for the game is evident on every page, and she taps into that connection for readers, enabling them to celebrate their own love for the game of baseball.

a sporting want-to-be.......2002-02-25
Having a limited knowledge of scouting, I decided to read this book just to see if I could "cut through" the crap. Without a doubt, this book made it so simple to figure out just what the scouts are looking for when evaluating a player for the major leagues. Thanks Mr. Goldis for your insight!!

Save Your Money.......2006-07-14
There is little insight in this book that people don't instinctively understand and either act or do not act on. The primary message of the book is to communicate problems with other people in a diplomatic way and realize that you may be the problem too. If you understand this you do not need to buy the book.
A Must Have - Must Read Book.......2002-08-24
Here is my bias - this is a must have book for anyone in the coaching, management consulting, facilitation or training business. In fact it is a must read for everyone. The authors follow a sensible and clear route that would be a benefit to any reader. It is small, easy to read and powerful. The vignettes display excellent examples and the exercises at the end of each short chapter are practical. The italics of fantasy and fact regarding "feedback" makes for an even faster read. You can browse through it quickly to find the passages where you wish to focus.
The book is short and sweet enough but you can find it completely summarized in three pages in the Epilogue. If it sounds as if there isn't much meat to this book, think again. It is deceptively challenging but not daunting. It makes a great reference book that I like to come back to time and time again.

Practical Psychology in One Lesson: "What Did You Say...".......2001-08-30
If I had the power to transport one book back in time and send it to myself, this would be the one. This is the book I needed when I became a people manager. It's also the book I needed when I began to raise my kids. In fact, I can't think of a time in my life when I did not wish I had more of the skills this book teaches. A simple but very deep book that causes a new level of understanding about how to talk to people with each reading. The authors draw on the best ideas from the great psychologists and show how to use them practically in everyday interactions. The short volume is easy to read and full of examples that can be immediately applied. In my humble opinion, this book is indespensible when managing people at work and managing close relationships at home. The conversational and entertaining style is a plus.

Fun!.......2007-02-23
This book was perfect for my 9 yo daughter. She has NLD and is often confused by language, facial expression, or hidden meanings. We had a lot of fun guessing the answers (she got them wrong every time!) and then reading the correct meaning. Within an hour she had picked a lyric out of a song and understood it for the first time ("coming out of my shell"). We are thrilled with this book!
Great idea -- but there are problems.......2005-10-15
This book helps a child with Aspergers unravel the mysteries of colloquial meatphors -- that is the great idea. However, it was written in the United Kingdom, which means that sometimes the explanations are confusing also (what is a queue, Mom???)-- that takes away from its effectiveness and makes for frustration. There are also a couple of publishing goofs -- wrong explanation on the page -- no excuse for that. I actually whited them out and moved the words over. Like I said -- great idea -- upbeat and useful -- but it should be noted that it is not US English.
This is the Book to Put NT Translators Out of Business.......2004-12-23
For people with autism/Asperger's, this book is the book to have in understanding colloquialisms, idioms and metaphors. Instead of relying on neurotypical (NT) counterparts to interpret and translate these phrases, just keep this book handy. It's the ideal tool to have when learning the language of the NT world.

The parent battle cry of this book's title says it all: What Did I Just Say!?! offers solace and suggestions for hair-pulling parents who are not getting cooperation, respect, or acceptable behavior from their young children. Drawing upon years of clinical experience, psychiatrist Denis Donovan and child therapist Deborah McIntyre explore miscommunication as the reason why good kids continue to behave in ways opposite to what parents ask. As the authors explain, "Parents have a tendency to say things very different from what they really mean. And kids have logical antennas, tuning in to what adults say literally and logically." This problem leads to a two-step solution. First, parents must learn to say what they mean, and then they can understand how the inner world of their child's experience and thinking is different from that of adults.
Parents will chuckle and cringe with recognition as Donovan and McIntrye examine ineffective parent perennials such as "How many times do I have to tell you to behave?" They use these statements of frustration as lesson plans for teaching parents how they fail to convey what they really want--and how they can clearly state what they mean. More important, the authors invite parents to listen with a child's ear to gain insight about why the answer, "I give up, how many times do you have to tell me to behave?" is a logical rather than disrespectful answer.
The authors spotlight a variety of behavioral strategies including how to capture a child's attention and understand their "attentional style," avoid tuning out and serial forgetting, set boundaries and cope with sadness and anger. Several chapters detail a communication technique for focused one-to-one conversations called "The Five Minutes". Occasionally, Donovan and McIntrye offer general descriptions rather than hands-on suggestions. But overall, they convince readers that parents who learn to say what they mean and understand children on their own terms, will not have to issue multiple commands to put on pajamas tonight. --Barbara Mackoff
Book Description
Does for parents and their young children what You Just Don't Understand does for men and women.
Did you know that when you say: "How many times have I told you not to?" your toddler thinks you are actually changing the subject rather than reiterating a question? Based on years of clinical experience and original child development research, What Did I Just Say!?! shows how conventional communication styles actually prevent parents from saying what they mean and cause children to hear something entirely different than what was intended. The authors demonstrate how a simple understanding of the logic of language and of childhood thinking can dramatically improve parent-child communication. Among the subjects covered are:
Understanding the complex experiential world of young children Putting structure, rules, and boundaries into children's lives while still fostering individuality Encouraging healthy emotional responsiveness and interpersonal sensitivity while decreasing anger and aggression Focusing a child's attention and foiling behaviors such as tuning out and forgetting
By helping parents understand the very different linguistic and experiential world of children, What Did I Just Say!?! offers a foundation for parent-child communication that will last a lifetime.

GET IT and get spares for your friends, LOVE IT!.......2003-06-19
This book is amazing. If you have problems with your boys (OK kids) you must get this. I thought I was the most emotionally available and "tuned-in" parent. After reading the first few chapters, I used the skills I leared in this book. My older one had been whining in the mornings about not wanting to go to school. I gently commanded him to tell me WHY (I didn't ASK, I COMMANDED him to tell me- lovingly)in the ways I learned in the book. He told me that he was embarassed because he couldn't open his tupperware at snacktime. I had the same morning scene EVERY MORNING until that day, and that was the end of it! I use this book EVERY DAY now. It is an easy read, and you will get results after just a few chapters. I had no parenting issues that I wanted to fix, but my sister had an appt. with the author without knowing he had a book (a Dr. referral, he's in Tampa, FL). I looked it up on Amazon and it was interesting. I got it and it's LOVE! GET IT, but be ready to take responsibility for your kids' problems and take initiative to change the way you speak to them. If you can, it'll be easy, SO EASY. If you are looking for an external reason for your kids' problems you can easily find that elsewhere.
Number 1 book on Parenting.......2002-08-01
Dr. Spock and all the others have nothing on this team. For the first time after reading and implementing parenting methods I have finally found one that truly works. The changes in our family are remarkable. In a world full of self help books on parenting, it is very confusing as to what is right, wrong or simply ineffective. This book however is not only effective but will teach parents common sense things we just could not see on our own. It is simple and even obvious now. Wonderful parenting guide for any parent whether working through a crisis or just wanting to make sure you and your child start out in the right direction. Its never to late to make a change and its not only effective, the results are quick and rewarding. Our quaility of family life has surpassed my wildest dreams!! Frued has been surpassed. We recommend this book to all of our friends, and to anyone reading this review. You will be amazed and grateful. Thanks Denis and Deborah!
What did I just say?.......2002-02-28
This book has changed my life, it has given the spoken language new clarity from the eyes of the young. I now have control of how words are spoken, interperted and understood, before I always assumed my child understood what I meant. My children have responded very well to this easy to follow and understand guide. We have also been fortunate enough to be in therapy with Dr. Donovan for the past 1 1/2, as we live in St Petersburg, Fl. Read the book, absorb the book, implement the book and change your world and your childs.
Change The Way You Communicate With Your Child.......2000-04-19
"What Did I Just Say! " by Denis Donovan, M.D. and Deborah McIntyre, M.A., R.N. is a book on how to communicate effectively with your children. This is a must in this day of computer wiz kids. It gives you phrases and practical statements to say to your children to help them process what you really want them to do. Children don't always hear what we meant. This book will change the way you communicate and interact with your children. Pick this one up today and be on your way to a better, more insightful relationship with your kids.
Not your typical parenting advice.......1999-09-29
If you want to understand how your child's mind really works, if you want to get past the blindfolds imposed by such labels as Attention Deficit Disorder, Hyperactivity, and Learning Disabled, if you want to be able to make rules and structure part of a meaningful relationship with your child and not just another source of arguments, read this book.

Book Description
The Khalili Collection is the greatest collection of Islamic art in private hands; it is continuing to grow and improve. It contains a large and comprehensive range of Qur'anic material, covering the entire history of Qur'an production from the seventh to the twentieth century, including examples from centres as far apart as Spain and India. This is the second of four volumes cataloguing the Qur'ans in the Khalili Collection. Notable among the manuscripts in this volume is a Qur'an by the greatest calligrapher of the Middle Ages, Yaqut al-Musta`simi, which is exceptional in that it retains its original illumination. Other masterpieces include a Qur'an written in gold from twelfth-century Iraq ; the only twelfth-century Qur'an from Valencia still in private hands, and a manuscript that is possibly the earliest Qur'an to survive from India. The lavish presentation of this catalogue is combined with detailed scholarship that not only encompasses the history of the subject, but also presents in accompanying essays new findings that have been made in the course of cataloguing. The text is supported by notes, up-to-date bibliography, and index, while inscriptions are reproduced in their original languages, with English translations. Dr James is an internationally renowned authority on Arab and Persian manuscripts, and on Qur'ans in particular.
