According to the author every venomous snake in peninsular Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand is in it. Besides the photos this is a good reason to buy it.
Excellent Field Guide.......1999-09-03
This is a pocket size field guide. Don't expect a big or even medium size book. But for its small size it has much value as a traveler's guide. If you plan to go hiking or explore an exotic destination like Thailand, this book can be very important. We tend to forget that snakes are more common in other parts of the world. A field guide with many color photographs of snakes (in particular), lizards, and turtles can be very helpful in identifying which are venemous and dangerous. All photographs are accompanied by a brief description. Furthermore, it was made small specifically for explorers and field researchers. You will not have to carry many large books on the field. Even if you are just into reptiles, this book is a great buy because it is one of the few to touch this area of the world.

This book is a great book for a variety of reasons. Most of the pictures are good and the text is generally accurate. The reason I like this book is because Asia is so poorly researched and the wildlife, especially herps, is poorly studied and published. In general, this book provides a small glimpse to this great and undiscovered area of the world. Now, if only the amphibians were shown!

During any given nine-inning baseball game over a thousand silent instructions are given between players and from umpires to coaches. You've seen the hand signals - now understand their meaning in the first examination of their history, evolution and methods. Baseball games are surveyed past and present to gain a fine chronology of player signals.
Play Ball!.......2004-07-17
A short but thorough history of baseball as seen through the development of signs, sign stealing and tip-off reading. Includes some delightful photographs, numerous anotations, a lengthy bibliography and index. Paul Dickson's approach to baseball makes me wonder if the recent homerun records aren't more a case for renewed talent in sign stealing / tip-off reading than for new technology for bats or performance inhancing drugs.
A surprising & fascinating look at behind-the-scenes basebal.......2003-06-30
Forget the simple theory that Bobby Thomson benefitted from a stolen sign when he hit the historic homer off Ralph Branca in 1951. Dickson gives us the real story--a much more colorful and fascinating peek at baseball's most memorable moment. Not the best.......2007-05-11
I agree, the CDs are a much needed help, since it would be impossible to pronnounce the Yoruba tones without the help of a native speaker. However, the design of the book is really poor and confusing. I have found several spealling mistakes in English and Yoruba. And the grammar explanations are very hard to understand.
Unfortunately there are not many Teach Yourself Yoruba books that are worth it. This one at least provides basic vocabulary and pronounciation skills.
Very authentic.......2006-08-23
This is my first encounter with Yoruba and I have to say that CDs are really helping. However, the book is very short and not particular about certain aspects and details of grammar and other nuances - for someone who NEVER spoke Yoruba and doesn't have anybody to ask for a clue, it leaves a lot of questions unanswered - for this, however, there are hopefully other Yoruba textbooks.
On the brighter note, I would like to add that the book does a very good job in giving a little insight on Yoruba people and Yoruba culture in general. I would recommend it as a good start book for anyone who wants to learn Yoruba - you can't go wrong with it.
A good learning tool..........2006-08-18
While I am still in the process of learning the Yoruba language, I think that this book is a nice beginners tool. Please keep in mind that the new book comes with to audio CD's that are MUCH NEEDED! So if you're considering buying the book used, fine, but be sure to ask if the CD's come with.
Without the audio assistance, I'm not sure how great of a tool this will be in your journey to learn the beautiful language of Yoruba!

Teach yourself Yoruba with a headache.......2004-11-16
Being a European woman living with a Yoruba man, I wanted to learn some of his language and bought Teach Yourself Yoruba. Unfortunately, I found that this booklet makes things extremely complicated. Although it is precise and correct, it starts with the first 6 chapters only dealing with the different tones. The examples that are given are probably useful when learning tones, but desastrous when you want to build some kind of vocabulary or practise making sentences. You have to be quite persistent to make it to chapter 7 ('Greetings' - e.g. good morning, good afternoon), let alone chapter 20 ('Numerals' - e.g. one, two, three, four, five).
I've learned many languages in my life (6 European languages, Chinese, Japanese, Swahili, Tibetan etc.), and although in most of them I never gained any fluency, I know from experience that this is not a good way to learn a language.

A way to engage people in Bible studies.......2000-08-17
This book consists of 60 calligraphic renderings of Bible passages and an very short explanation by Botts as to why he chose to render the passage as he did. This explaination shows how his art engaged him in a reflection on the passage and how his study of the scripture inspired his art. This is much along the lines of Jo Milgrom's Handmade Midrash. For anyone who is themself interested in calligraphy, for those interested in art as prayer, or those interested in using art as a means of encouraging bible study this is an excellent resource.

I enjoyed mine. I mean, yeah, your not gonna unlock the mysteries of the universe with this little Zen book...but if you really expect instant enlightenment from a fun little kit that you got off the internet, then you are looking in the wrong place. Try a church, or temple or something....so yeah...don't buy this if you are looking for a life changing epiphany or some junk. It's more about fun. However, that's not to say it doesn't have it's depth. There were some things in there that made me think.
I enjoyed the painting thing that it comes with. I think that was the best part. It reminded me of when I used to play with water color paints when I was a young girl. It was fun, and yes, relaxing. I think it would make a fantastic gift!

If more attention would have been paid to the quality of the components and less to the quality of the packaging, this would have truly been a satisfying purchase. The painting board which fades properly, unfortunately, leaves faint outlines of the previous drawings. In addition, the text of the book is, at best, a gloss of meditative themes. I returned my copy.
