5 out of 5 stars Felipe Molina Describes His Own Culture.......2003-07-15

Misconceptions about the Yaqui (Yoeme) people are widespread because the New Age movement has turned them into gurus. Carlos Castañeda has surely put this tribe on the map, but not in a way the Yaquis might have liked to see it. The one book which has been written from a Yaqui point of view (`Yaqui Deer Songs' by Felipe S. Molina) offers us a glimpse into a world which is, in many ways, very different from ours. You can read about the sacred deer and its meaning to the Yaquis, but I guess you have to be a Yaqui to grasp its full meaning. I would recommend this book to anyone who is truly interested in the world view of the Yaqui people.

5 out of 5 stars exquisite poetry in Yaqui and English.......1999-11-19

The lyrics of the Yaqui Deer Songs are magical, moving poetry both in English translations and in the liquid sounds of the Yaqui originals. This book gives a sense of the true flavor of Yaqui culture and spirituality.

This book contains the most up-to-date information and is highly accurate. It does, however, suffer from a poorly organized format. Some authors cover the same information, while other important topics fall between the cracks. I would have liked to see the same organizational structure used for all 3 "types" of deer

Book Description

In 1886, the Ihalmiut people of northern Canada numbered seven thousand; by 1946, when Farley Mowat began his two-year stay in the Arctic, the population had fallen to just forty. With them, he observed for the first time the phenomenon that would inspire him for the rest of his life: the millennia-old migration of the Arctic’s caribou herds. He also endured bleak, interminable winters, suffered agonizing shortages of food, and witnessed the continual, devastating intrusions of outsiders bent on exploitation. Here, in this classic and first book to demonstrate the mammoth literary talent that would produce some of the most memorable books of the next half-century, best-selling author Farley Mowat chronicles his harrowing experiences. People of the Deer is the lyrical ethnography of a beautiful and endangered society. It is a mournful reproach to those who would manipulate and destroy indigenous cultures throughout the world. Most of all, it is a tribute to the last People of the Deer, the diminished Ihalmiuts, whose calamitous encounter with our civilization resulted in their unnecessary demise.

3 out of 5 stars Concept is correct.......2005-08-20

The concept is correct anyway. These people were led to their demise by three factors: the church, commercialization (HBC), and the Canadian government. Mowat claims he spent two years living among these people. This is doubted by some. I've traveled in some of the areas that this book takes place. Not everyone has great things to say about this author. One person I talked to called him a historical novelist. He has other nicknames.

But while it is questionable that all the events described in this book and its' successor (The Desperate People) actually took place, at least he got the main theme correct.

1 out of 5 stars The worst book EVER..........2004-06-07

What ever you do, do not waste your precious life reading this book...

5 out of 5 stars Yes! A life-afirming wonderous book!.......2001-08-04

This book is magic. You will never think about a small band of Indians as statistics again. This book does volumes to make people of our society really feel what goes on in traditional societies. To feel jealous of their solidarity. To feel unloved by our own. It's great! READ IT.

5 out of 5 stars Remarkable first book from promising author!.......2000-04-04

First published in 1947 and available in a wide variety of editions since then, Farley Mowat's first and most distant book is still remarkably readable in the world of the 21st century. It concerns one of the stranger human sagas of the last century, that of the discovery and destruction of a remote Inuit society, the Ihalmiut, in Canada's north. The setting of the book is far enough away in time for us to marvel at how little things have changed since. The contemptuous attitude of European man for the aborigine seems hardly to have altered over the years. We are still hard put to understand the needs of the first peoples and how to answer them.

Farley Mowat has combined a fine sensitivity for the natural environment with a sharp eye for the details of man's place within it. It must be exceedingly rare in the history of anthropology that such an inexperienced investigator has taken such pains to get to the source of his information. Mowat lived among the Ihalmiut for over a year to write the book. During that time he witnessed the rapid deterioration of the small group which remained, and tried to examine the causes of their decline. With very deft prose for such a young writer, he points out the difference between the intentions and the actions of the European discoverers of The People (as they refer to themselves) and the consequences of such disparity. The Ihalmiut were exploited in much the same way as any other tribal band found wandering by the early explorers. However, as Mowat points out, this was an exceptional group which had survived the extreme rigours of a barren land (known to us simply as The Barrens) for so many generations, only to be felled by contact with the very race which might have provided them with so much assistance.

The Ihalmiut are long gone from their homeland but their story serves to remind us of our often difficult relationship with the land and the people on it. Perhaps, as a race of city-dwellers, we need to consider our place in the natural environment more than ever. Mowat's work is a just accounting of where we stand in relationship to nature. Nor does he suggest that we should all go and live in the tundra. Yet People of the Deer is a source of considerable inspiration for those now ready to reflect on the unbalancing effect of contemporary values.

5 out of 5 stars People Of The Deer.......2000-02-03

A truly insightful story of the inland eskimo people of the Canadian Arctic. It details not only their day to day survival in a harsh land, but also tells of their myths, legends, and history. It also tells of the whiteman's interference with their culture and how that affect may ultimately lead to their extinction. The book sincerely takes the reader into the lives of the People of the Deer.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to the Yaqui culture.......2006-09-12

The Yaqui are a Native American group whose original homeland was on both sides of the Gulf of California in what is now Mexico. The wars that they fought against encroachment and extermination were largely against the Mexican government. As was the case nearly everywhere else, they were overwhelmed and were scattered throughout northwest Mexico and the southwestern United States. Despite their hardships, they have managed to preserve much of their traditions and culture and some of it is explained in this book.
They have many legends of the origin of their environment and the animals that inhabit it. Those legends involve the origin of the first deer, the first corn, why the moon waxes and wanes, how humans acquired fire and are recounted here. The history of the Yaqui people before the arrival of the Spaniards and how they reacted is briefly retold. Christianity was not rejected, in fact the Yaqui generally embraced it, and a large part of the book gives detailed descriptions of the Yaqui Easter ceremony. A combination of traditional Yaqui beliefs and Christian worship, it is a demonstration of how cultures can simultaneously coexist in the same ceremonies.
The Yaqui are a tribal group of Native Americans who faced the same extermination and absorption pressures that the others did. It is a common myth that only the Europeans engaged in policies designed to eradicate other cultures. This book explains that other groups in power in the Western Hemisphere engaged in similar policies. If you have any interest in the ancient and rich culture of the Yaqui, then this is a book you should read.

The life cycle, aging, growth patterns, habitat and environmental needs of the whitetail are explained in detail with the writer's storyteller style mixed in. This book can be understood and enjoyed by young and old, hunters and ranchers, nature lovers and anyone interested in learning more about one of the most unique animals on earth.

      Book Description

Wisdomkeepers takes you on an extraordinary spiritual journey into the lives, minds, and natural-world philosophy of Native American spiritual elders. The elders tell who they are, how they live, and what they believe. Magnificent portraits complement the soaring text. Among those profiled are Buffalo Jim, a Seminole who describes the Seminole story of creation as if the Everglades were Eden, talks of his people's individual passage into the after life, and reveals that every field of wild plants is, to him, a medicine garden. You'll also meet "Uncle" Frank Davis (Fancy Warrior), a Pawnee Elder who describes the "path to understanding" as a trail filled with scraps of paper, each one a piece of a puzzle. Also profiled is Mathew King, a Lakota who warns of punishments for those who would destroy the Earth Mother.

Readers share the innermost thoughts and feelings, dreams and visions, laughter, healing remedies, and prophecies of the Wisdomkeepers, whose humanity shines through every page.

The book is so well done, but the talking book is far better. You enter the jounery with them. You hear the wisdom of the spirtiually elders and long with the creaking of the doors and beatiful pow-wow/drumming in the background. You get a great opportunity to hear the calling of the eagle out of the sky at wounded knee that was prayered out of the sky by Frank Fools Crow. The best part that makes me laugh is when Steve Wall and Harvey Arden go and see one of the elders. Steve doesn't have a chance to go into his spell when the elder tells them I know why you are here you lost your orginial instructations. Also when they go and see charlie Knight and he asks them each time when Ya Leavein.

      Book Description

This in-depth book concentrates on hunting deer with in-line rifles the black-powder gun that is revolutionizing muzzleloader deer hunting in much the same way the compound bow propelled bow-hunting into a pastime for the masses.

McMurchy has been shooting and hunting with modern in-line muzzleloaders since shortly after their invention in 1985. He reveals what hunters should look for when buying an in-line rifle, and then offers detailed insights on their use from the shooting range to the deer woods. Most muzzleloading books concentrate on everything from flintlocks to sidelocks to in-lines. McMurchy is the first to concentrate on what is widely acknowledged the deer hunters muzzleloader of choice: the in-line. In his book, McMurchy shares:

-Photos, diagrams and charts of key features to consider when buying an in-line.
-Practical, straight-shooting, hard-hitting loads for deer hunters.
-Shooting techniques that teach hunters their guns true long-range capabilities.
-A comprehensive look at the trends and politics that affect muzzleloading laws.

When I first received this book I couldn't put it down. It is a complete, unbiased well laid-out analysis of modern inline muzzleloaders. I was particularly impressed with the ratings they provided on a variety of products. Extremely thorough, taking far more into consideration than just accuracy. I brought it over to our gun club so other blackpowder enthusiasts could enjoy it, and I literally have a list of people wanting to borrow this book. But I guarantee that you won't want to loan this beautiful hard cover book to anyone. This beautifully illustrated book is truely a piece of art suitable for the den or library.
