5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.........2005-02-06

I love this book, it is sitting on my coffee table right now. I've read this book atleast 5 times in the past couple months, most photography books I read once then never touch them again for quite a long time.. This book is amazing though.

I highly suggest purchasing it if you enjoy wildlife photography and reading about the photos. All the storys are short but very entertaining and the photos are of top notch quality.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for nature and photography collections.......2004-11-12

Wildlife is a truly gorgeous showcase of wildlife photography from expert professionals. Still images are presented in full-color, along with a brief sidebar written by the photographer detailing the story behind the photograph in question. A wide variety of species are presented in all their glory, from a magnificent tiger in mid-leap to a penguin chick huddled for protection underneath its dutiful parent. Highly recommended for nature and photography collections alike, and simply beautiful to page through.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Meal.......2003-08-18

This is a collection of the work of 40 of the world's most famous wildlife photographers. Names like Iwago, Lanting, Mangelsen, Morris and Wolfe will be quite familiar to people interested in this genre.

Each artist gets four pages for some biographical data and several pictures. Every one of the photos is world class.

While the biographies are generally too short to provide much insight into the individual artists, one can discern a couple of trends in their lives. A good many started life in some other career and after a while decided to make the risky jump to professional wildlife photography. Others were interested in nature all of their life and the photography grew out of this love. No one started life as a commercial or fashion photographer and then made the switch to wildlife. Occasionally a photographer will offer a surprising statement about the commercial nature of wildlife photography, like the photographer who notes that the books he has published don't make financial sense, but do help to drum up other business.

As I've perused a number of wildlife photography books over the years, I've noticed that a good book is like a good piece of music. As you proceed through it, you notice both the repetition and the variation of elements so that by the end of the book you have not just looked at pictures, but also come to understand something about the photographer and the way he relates to the animals he photographs. This book is more like a CD my son owns, called "50 Great Classical Hits" (or something like that). The CD plays just the most dramatic points from a number of symphonies. While that can be interesting, it certainly doesn't provide the same experience as listening to a single full symphony.

This book has the same effect. Many of the pictures are obviously well composed and striking but when one turns the page the picture one just looked at disappears from the mind as the reader tries to come to grips with a completely different subject and style. Ultimately I found this beautiful book unsatisfying.

But, it does serve the very useful purpose of introducing you to wildlife photographers you may not have yet encountered. I, for one, will be keeping my eyes open for the work of Chris Packham and Konrad Wothe. Reading it may also lead you to look for the work of unfamiliar artists.

4 out of 5 stars Grand images.......2003-04-09

The images are brilliantly printed with stunning details. I even liked the format whereby the equipment used were listed together with the image.

Excellent book for inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars a brillant book!.......2003-01-08

This is my favorite book of the year. The photos are really beautiful! I gave this as a Christmas gift to several of my friends who are into photography. In addition to the fabulous photos there is useful practical information for up and coming photographers.

5 out of 5 stars The Best wildlife photography book.......2000-05-02

I have bought & borrowed many wildlife books and out of all of them this is the best one I have ever seen. The photography is excellent, and the colors are so vibrant they make you fell as if you are watching the animals live.

All kinds of different animals are featured in this fascinating book. A turtle is shown with a mosquito on its nose and a baby dear is pictured while it sleeps. A squirrel eats a dandelion stem & mice gather around an ear of corn.

Other images show egrets fighting in mid air & butterflies resting on a flower. You will even find adorable baby bears caught climbing a tree. There also is a gorgeous field of sunflowers & a single elegant water lily floating in a pond.

You get a glimpse at the northern lights & snowcapped mountains against a brilliant blue sky as well. The index in the back is a great bonus; it lists each plate, the location it was taken at & the photographic settings that were used.

4 out of 5 stars Super Book !.......1998-11-03

This book is a great example of how tame and captive animals can be photographed and passed off as wild. The color reproduction of this book is unmatchable, as is the sharpness of the pictures. Although it may be difficult to identify the computer manipulated from those which have not been tampered with, the everyday nature enthusiast will find this book a good add for the coffee table. Good luck finding these animals in the wild!

5 out of 5 stars A visit with these indredible photographers!.......1998-09-06

I had the opportunity to participate in an interview with Carl Sams and Jean Stoick at their home studios here in Michigan. We (Michigan Magazine Television) were amazed at the time and dedication that went into producing such a fine publication as Images of The Wild. The startling impact this collection has in photographic detail and wonderful stories along many of the photos makes it MUCH more than a mere "coffee table" release. The time and engergy this photographic team take in becoming part of the enviroment of each of thier subjects, to gain the animal's trust, before taking the opportunities to capture their image is a story in it's self. Their dedication and patient persistance along with an undeniable kinship with "Lady Luck" makes for pure "eye" candy.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Design - - Noteworthy pictures.......1998-08-08

Although one may question if these images are "wild", the layout and quality of this book will be difficult to beat. It is apparent that the publisher has assembled a first class book with the highest quality photographs to be found. If you are looking for true, unmanipulated wildlife photography, there may be better choices. However if a colorful coffee table book with lots of stories is what you are after, this is the book for you.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking, awesome, beautiful.......1998-07-01

This book is the most beautiful wildlife book I have ever seen. Each picture comes to life. I have given this book to five members of my family or friends and each has commented on how wonderful it is and how much they have enjoyed it. This book is certainly worth owning!!!!!!!

Book Description

The Daitoryu is a brutally effective fighting method thought to have been first developed more than a thousand years ago by members of the Japanese imperial family. It was then refined and honed in great secrecy through centuries of hand-to-hand combat by highly trained warriors. Its
techniques were jealously guarded until late in the nineteenth century, when it was first introduced to the world by master Sokaku Takeda, who began to accept students from around the country.

It was this tradition that Morihei Ueshiba spent years studying just before he set out on his own to found Aikido-which has in recent years become one of the world's most popular martial arts. The roots of Aikido are in the Daitoryu, and for that reason Aikido practitioners will want to learn all
they can about this martial art.

The Hidden Roots of Aikido is the first book to appear in English that offers a detailed visual introduction to techniques of the Daitoryu tradition. Heavily illustrated with approximately 800 photographs, it gives a clear, complete picture of the steps involved in about 90 techniques. Its
substantial section on history and theory takes a close look at the Daitoryu's historical background and philosophy, while a glossary of terms provides a handy list of the most important terms.

The Hidden Roots of Aikido will be an indispensable learning tool for students of the Daitoryu, and a valuable reference for other martial arts practitioners.

4 out of 5 stars A good book for learning and reference.......2005-04-29

This book has a lot of good facts and a huge load of techniques for self-defense. The pictures are slightly hard to follow, but if you fit them together with the description of the process, you should be fine. It would be a very good idea for students and instructors to keep a book like this, since it is a textbook.

4 out of 5 stars You can grab a lot of information........2001-07-09

I did not rate this book with 5 stars because some techniques are poorly explained and you need to follow the pictures. Ah !!! the pictures, they are great, easy to follow and there are lots of them. You can grab so much good information and take it with you to the dojo for practicing. I wish I could have more time to practice everything on this book.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best books in years!!.......2001-02-24

This is one of the best books I've ever read in the martial arts field. It has helped me a great deal in my own development in the arts. I teach a self defense class in Florence,AL which is geared for practical defense on the street. I especially enjoyed the section on pins and their variations. In today's dojos I see so many instructors focusing on the sport aspects of the arts which don't always work on the street. I loved the fact that they showed the pins that you could do without using your hands and that they never assume that there is only one attacker on the street and that every move addresses these situations. I feel like this book will benefit people of all arts not just Aikido. Many modern style Jujitsu practitioners really need to see this book because I feel like they would learn alot. The only drawback I see is that if you don't already know how to do certain wrist locks you may be lost in some places. For those people I would recommend they read Dynamic Aikido by Gozo Shioda first before buying this book, but I would definately buy this book if I wanted to be a better martial artist

4 out of 5 stars Hidden Roots of Aikido: Aikijujutsu Daitoryu.......umm ok........2000-03-24

First and foremost, this was a good book. A clear connection between Aikido and Daitoryu Jujutsu is made, especially with the visual aid of the many photographs of the techniques. Their similarities are evident. However, not much is given to readers on the actual working relationship of Daitoryu and Aikido, and what exactly makes them different. I feel that this book was created for the Aikido practitioner who perhaps is looking for answers that he may be asking about where his or her PHYSICAL techniques originated from. Philosophy is barely touched upon. The author's treacher was a second generation disciple of the headmaster of Daitoryu, (who taught the founder of Aikido). I wonder how much of the book's content is synthesis and how much is authentic. All in all, it is a fascinating book, and does provide insight into the workings of both Daitoryu Jujutsu and Aikido technique.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent work for Aikiju-jutsu beginners.......2000-01-14

I am an instructor of Goshin Ryu Aikijiu-jutsu and I really enjoyed this book. It is well organized and readable. The action sequence shown in the photographs is very clear. If you are familiar with the principles common to all styles of this art you will be fond of this work, particullarly with the references to counter-techniques, rarely seen. An excellent book.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Workbook........2007-07-16

Simply put, if you get this book and work through it, you will learn Kana.

I'm a busy guy and have had the book for a little over a month. I learned hiragana and am halfway through katakana. No flash cards neccesary, just write the characters over and over.

The reading exercises are especially excellent and will have your eyes tuned to reading speedily in no time.

A+.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent way to learn hiragana and katakana.......2006-01-04

Primarily, this book teaches the proper way to write hiragana and katakana. It excels at this because it gets you to practice, practice, practice and practice some more. Personally, I made photocopies of all the practice pages so I could more easily practice.

Secondarily, it covers basic pronunciation, reading, and writing sentances. Just the basics, concepts are explained simply and it provides a good platform for further study. I'm certain the authors intended readers to study other books for these skills.

Its one minor drawback is not including info on why machine-made characters sometimes look significantly different than hand-written characters.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book :)!.......2003-04-19

This is a great book! Many people who learn the Kana. Think that once they memorize all the characters. They can fully read the Kana. Which is wrong!!!! This is why I love this book. It teaches kana grammar with kana writing, and has plenty of exerices. So by the end of the book you won't forget anything. I really recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn kana.
I never thought I could read and write kana, until I bought this book. Now it's off to kanji :(.

Also, don't be afraid of kana grammar. It is 100 times easier than english grammar.

5 out of 5 stars Good for self-paced course or in a classroom.......2002-08-13

This is a practical and useful workbook that teaches the hiragana and katakana characters. It uses a combination of learning by rote practice in tandem with self-test examples. The self-test examples have good variety and range from writing down sentences in kana to correcting sentences that have deliberate errors in them. I found the book's approach of practicing the kana along with reinforcement of what I learned to be an effective one-two combination. It helped me avoid that dreaded "I did it and then promptly forgot what I did" syndrome that some language students tend to have. I am glad that the authors recognized this. Of course, the authors have experience in teaching and their practical experience was reflected in the design of the book.

The book does have effective physical design. The lessons conveniently fit on each page and have enough space on them for you to write down the kana exercises. Each page can be easily photocopied onto another regular-size paper for repeated practice so that you don't damage the original book's pages. Each lesson also fits nicely on each side of a page so that you don't get a example that fits halfway on one side and continues on the other side of a page. That is very thoughtful of the authors.

Importantly, the book starts out by teaching hiragana as it is the most important of the two kana. I've seen other books start with the katakana simply because it had fewer brush strokes. I think that is a mistake. The brush stroke order is prominently shown on each rote lesson page which is a plus as it makes each lesson page self-contained and useful to practice if you are on a bus, in the library, or elsewhere so that you only need the individual sheets you are practicing with (no need for the rest of the book to serve as reference material).

If not for the additional thoughtfulness of the authors in providing an effective physical design of the book so that you can use it in versatile approaches, I would award FOUR stars.

4 out of 5 stars Does the Buisiness.......2001-01-18

Methodically works through all the charachters. good writing guide. if followed through, you will be able to read and write in hirigana and katakana, quickly and painlessly. includes translations of text.

With Gustav Stickley and Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles Sumner Greene and brother Henry Mather Greene defined the Arts & Crafts movement in America. From their offices in Pasadena, they created "Ultimate Bungalows," finely crafted homes characterized by the integration of architecture and interior design into a harmonious whole. Though both brothers had long and distinguished careers, the highpoint of their work came between 1903 and 1909, when they created such lasting masterpieces as The Gamble House in Pasadena, the Pratt House in Ojai, and the Thorsen House in Berkeley. Greene & Greene: Masterworks presents their work in this era in loving detail. Bruce Smith, who wrote the text for the book, is an authority on the Arts & Crafts movement, and is currently working on a biography of Charles Greene. Alexander Vertikoff's lush photography is the perfect accompaniment to the text, beautifully capturing the sweeping grandeur of each house as well as capturing the subtle details that make each Greene & Greene home a treasure. After an overview of the Arts & Crafts movement and a brief biography of the of the brothers, the book turns its attention to various details that characterized the brothers' style. In the section on entryways, for instance, they point out that
Rarely in a Greene and Greene house is there an abrupt division between inside and out. One enters by transitions, in stages. Brick steps my lead up from the garden to a porch. Shelter comes from a gabled overhang or sleeping porch that extends from above--one is covered but still able to feel the breeze. The pattern in the door's art glass evokes the natural world being left behind. Stepping inside, one still does not feel totally enclosed; across the entrance hall are doorways framing a vista of gardens beyond.
After exploring the details, they move on to the houses themselves, looking at 24 houses ranging from the modest, unassuming Brandt-Serrurier House in Altedena--a single story cottage built in 1905--to their greatest creation, The Gamble House in Pasadena. A short history and examination of details is given to each house, but by and large the houses are allowed to speak for themselves through dazzling photos. One of the most striking features of each house is the honey-colored light that fills each room as it pours through Japanese-inspired stained glass chandeliers and is reflected from rich mahogany and teak floors and furniture. To walk through a Greene & Greene house was to walk through a work of fine art. As Henry Greene said, "The idea was to eliminate everything unnecessary, to make the whole as direct and simple as possible, but always with the beautiful in mind as the first goal." As Greene & Greene: Masterworks clearly shows, they succeeded brilliantly. --Laszlo Simonyi

Book Description

In the first decades of the 20th century, Charles Sumner Greene and Henry Mather Greene almost single-handedly defined the Arts and Crafts aesthetic in America as the architectural firm Greene & Greene. The only full-color survey of the firm's greatest works-including several newly restored to their original grandeur-Greene & Greene reveals the consummate artistry that ensured the brothers' place among the most brilliant of American architects. An in-depth tour of 25 magnificent homes, this book examines the creative evolution of their style. From the Gamble House in Pasadena, California whose director contributes the book's foreword to lesser-known gems throughout the state, Greene & Greene is a wonderful introduction to the brothers' work, and a warm homage to the charms of this refined domestic architecture.

The book is beautiful, filled with both architectural ideas and furnishing ideas for items done in the craftsman style. I purchased the book for these ideas and was delighted with all the pictures. Some of the stonework illustrated is breathtaking in its beauty.

A great coffee table book about some of the most (to my mind) beautiful houses to come out of America. The photos alone are worth the price. You can also get some great ideas out of this book when you or "the Boss" decide to upgrade your digs.
