Being an expert sledder, I always scoffed at snowshoers as those hippy-skippys who couldn't afford a snowmobile. Until one fateful day, while waiting for the dentist to remove my first and last wisdom tooth, I browsed through this book by Andersen and became immediately enchanted. Not one to judge a book by its cover, I tried out three different routes as outlined by Andersen and found that he did a masterful job guiding me through the mountains, around the crags and over the criks. The route finding and subsequent snowshoe up (and sled down) of Tumulo mountain will always remain as one of the most special and beautiful day hikes I have done. I felt as if he were but a hundred yards ahead beating a trail through the wilderness for me, not too close but never too far. I loved this book enough to buy my six copies, give them out to fellow sledbums and return the other to the dentist. All told, a great inspirational and practical guidebook, would that there were more like it!

I found Snowshoe Routes of Oregon to be a great resource as my interest in snow shoeing has grown. The book offers a range of routes for varying levels of skill and/or physical fitness. THe author obviously knows the country he is writting about as well as he knows snowshoeing. The book is both an excellent guide and a great introduction to the budding snowshoe enthusiast.

    Bountiful deep snow
With Shea's book on Cascade slopes
    Snowshoe peace beckons...

In short (to the Haiku challenged), this book rocks! If you're a Cascadian geek who loves the winter, the book will undoubtedly treat you well.

3 out of 5 stars you don't quite get what you pay for.......2007-10-05

I have been carrying this book around with me for the past 3 days. I bought it because it had the highest rating when I compared it to other books about how to write fantasy. Since each chapter is written by a different writer, the quality and helpfulness of the individual chapters are too varied for my taste. I do not have the time to go into an in-depth review right now, but I can point out the glaring omission that really miffed me: the "Arms and Armor" chapter had no description/explanation of bows and arrows or crossbows. Why? I really needed that, Tee! For this reason and the aforementioned general unevenness of the book, as well as one of the most pitiful indexes I've seen in a while, I give it a 3. It's a good jumping-off point, and it recommends some better, more in-depth references (some of the chapters do this, anyway), but I wish I had spent my $20+ on the TWO books (Orson Scott Card's how-to and Science Fiction Worldbuilding) that I have in my cart right now, instead of just this one.

2 out of 5 stars How can it be a Complete guide if it's only Volume 1?.......2007-02-14

I ignored the bad reviews of this book and bought it anyway because it sounded like it had some pertinent information. Unfortunately the little pertinent information contained therein does not not justify the cost of the book. The book would be more helpful if it contained helpful tips at a more high-level; I found almost half the book to be the authors saying what bugs THEM. It's especially annoying when a tipster will repeat things like "never do this, ever, not even if someone threatens to kill you" and then adds the caveat of "unless you have a good reason." Can we do it or can't we? Should we do it or shouldn't we? It completely ignores all of the literature cases where those things HAVE happened simply because that particular author thinks that's a bad thing to do. I refuse to hold someone's subjective opinion as an authority on how to write fantasy. The book is full of information; I won't argue this. The relevance of the information, however, is something that can certainly be debated.
In the end, if you use this book for what I use all "books on writing" for (to make sure I didn't forget something) then it serves its purpose while costing a bit more than the others. If you're looking for it to live up to the title of Complete Guide, you're bound to be disappointed (since that's an impossibility).

4 out of 5 stars Very useful, but..........2007-01-10

This book is a great resource for fantasy writers. It draws attention to details that could easily be overlooked by a writer in this genre; details that would make a story richer for their inclusion. It stimulates the imagination as one considers how information from each chapter might work in the world/story he or she has created.

However, it has been poorly edited and is full of typos, spelling mistakes and poor grammar. One occasionally stumbles upon a sentence so poorly constructed that it requires a struggle to understand the author's meaning, and one chapter is so disjointed and full of errors that it is very difficult to follow. This inattention to detail would make me leery of accepting the information on medieval customs as fact, and I would be careful to check any of the information from this novel against another source before using it (though some would say that's a good idea with any research).

Aside from that caveat, I still highly recommend this book to beginning fantasy writers, as it may open your eyes to avenues of world and character creation you never considered before.

5 out of 5 stars It's all about the details!.......2006-07-08

This is a wonderful book for anyone who writes fantasy, as it addresses the special nuances specific to the genre. There are a number of good books on writing novels out there, but none detail what's needed in a good fantasy novel, how characters may differ, how to plot a believe story while maintaining the fantasy elements.

I recommend this book for fantasy veteran writers as well as beginners.

5 out of 5 stars Must Have World Building Reference Book.......2006-03-02

My husband is a publisher with little time to read for pleasure, so when I saw that the book he had purchased had quickly gone from "brand new condition" to "over worn and dog eared" I had to read it for myself.

The Complete Guide to Writing Fantasy is a great book for anyone who is interested in writing fantasy. It is an excellent book in the sense that it covers the basics giving the reader fundamentally all the information that they would need to know to construct their own fantasy world from scratch and how to do so with confidence.

Some of the review posted here are in my opinion very harsh and edged toward the bitter. Collectively, the biggest complaint appears to be that the authors who participated were not "big enough names" in their field. To that I say, Steven King's non-fiction novel, On Writing, is currently on the shelf in many Dollar Stores.

I'm not saying "don't" buy this book. I'm saying buy it used at a considerable discount. It's got some useful information and and few 'exercises' that are helpful, but overall it's kind of flaccid. It's worth a read or two.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves this.......2007-03-04

My son likes to write fantasy stories and plays D&D with his friends. He was thrilled with this book! It gives backgrounds and historical facts as well as advice and tips. The one feature I think is helpful is the vocabulary in reference to castles and costumes of the time periods often found in fantasy stories. Celebrated authors write essays on several subjects, so the information is not without merit. After all, they sold their stories. I am not the one reading this book, but I will say that my son is 16, and teenagers don't get excited over much, so if he was thrilled, you know it must be good!

    1 out of 5 stars What a Disappointment. .......2006-05-30

This book has very little content, just random facts that lack any sort of overall cohesion.
The chapter on Africa talks only about ancient Egypt. The chapter on trade, commerce and law has nothing on trade.
    It's also boring.

1 out of 5 stars No no no...........2005-12-04

The entire concept of writing fiction of ANY kind is to use your imagination mixed with the things that you know. A book to TELL you how to write fantasy does not make a bit of sense! If you are building a world, use common sense and round it out, smooth the edges, be as 'realistic' as you can for a Fantasy story. The problem with Fantasy these days is that all Elves are the same; all Dwarves are the same, all Goblins are the same...every book written is basically a carbon copy of the last one. These races DO NOT EXIST in our world, therefore you cannot say they MUST be one way or another. Get back to IMAGINATION - just use the sense you were given. TRUE old fashioned imagination has created the BEST books ever read.

2 out of 5 stars Not as Complete as the Title Suggest.......2005-10-12

It's definately a good starting point for a reference library, yet it still seems to leave a lot out. For example, it does little to explain world-building and gives less-than-detailed examples in a lot of the book's sections. Most of the info in the book can be found with a search engine. I recommend it only for those of you who want to build a decent reference library.

4 out of 5 stars The book's great, but the binding isn't........2007-05-02

I have to say that Vol. 2 is just as complete as the first book in the series. However, the first book was printed in the US, and the second book in Canada, so the second book is a little smaller (metric I guess), and the book was cut with a unsharpened blade, so the pages are not even and have blade patterns cut in them. Other, than the asthetics, the book is great. The publisher needs better QC, that's all.

    5 out of 5 stars Fabulous resource.......2005-06-08

This is a must-have for anyone trying to write fantasy. The book is an easy, entertaining read. Kudos to all who contributed

4 out of 5 stars Stands above the rest, but how far?.......2005-03-03

The greatest compliment I can give this book is that I've owned it for less than a week and it's been borrowed four times. The first volume goes over general character and world generation--anyone with access to roleplaying reference materials knows general character and world generation--but this book won my heart because it describes other areas of fantasy fiction. High notes are Tony Ruggerio's chapter on horror fantasy and Tee Morris' chapter on Asian-based fantasy, and a few chapters concern editing and publishing specifically for the fantasy writing market. However, the rest of the book rehashes the same information laid out in the first volume, albeit with a few tweaks (like a full-blown "sex in fantasy" chapter instead of a few hints).

All in all, it's one of the better fantasy resources I've found in print. If you've got the cash to spare and you write offbeat fantasy, it's worth owning.

4 out of 5 stars Better than Volume 1 in series.......2005-02-27

For all that this book rambles on about such "interesting" topics as the discussion on how to this book (not your book, but this book!), I found it better than the original volume in the series. There is once again wasted space, i.e. chapters about writing short stories, that don't fit well and are covered much better in other book on writing. Some somewhat useful sections on combining genres.

What makes this book shine is two of the sections are quite good. There is a detailed section on Asian culture (though I wish it had a reference section) and an intruiging chapter on government.

To summarize my thoughts on these books: I was looking for something that would overview a lot of information (which these do) in enough detail (which these sometimes do) and with good references (the references were spotty at best. Some chapters ended with suggestions on how to do an internet search.) If there were a better set of books that covered this information, I would recommend it, but I have yet to find any such thing.

Unless you want a detailed discussion on Asian culture, I recommend purchasing "The Writer's Complete Fantasy Reference" instead.

The fantasy writer has a lot to keep track of: fantasy cultures and races, magic, mythological creatures, unusual punishments, castles and fortifications, and more. Plus, though fantasy writing "must be grounded in both truth and life experience if it is to work," says Terry Brooks (A Knight of the Word) in his introduction here, it must also be "as inventive and creative as the writer can make it." Find your groundedness elsewhere. This is the place to turn for all the other stuff. Need a refresher on the difference between aleuromancy (fortune cookies) and alomancy (fortune-telling by salt)? Can't remember the term for starting a new witches' coven (hiving off)? Need a glossary of particularly gruesome punishments from the Middle Ages? It's all here, and more. With illustrations of architectural structures, Maori weapons, and various types of dress and armor; and references to many more sources, should you crave even greater detail. --Jane Steinberg

    5 out of 5 stars A Very Usefull Book.......2004-10-07

An excellent Reference, I bought this book looking for information like: How many men in a legion? How far does a longbow shoot? And what is a plinth? I was not disappointed.

    Pro's:
Easy to read, covers a lot of ground, including sections on: Arms, Armor and Armies, Creatures of Myth and Legend, and Magic. Well organized, with a complete 14-page index, and a nice cover.

    Cons:
This book is a Fantasy reference, so if you're looking for solid historical fact, look elsewhere. It covers a lot of info, but doesn't tell you how, where, or when to use it.

As a Reference I give it 5 stars, and I highly recommend it to beginning Writers and Fantasy Fans alike.

5 out of 5 stars An Invaluable Resource For Anyone Creating Fantastic Worlds.......2000-10-31

An invaluable resource for writers, game designers, and anyone else creating works of fantasy in which it is importnat to understand how fantastic worlds can be effectively designed and structured. Subtitled "An Indispensible Compendium of Myth and Magic" and co-authored by fantasy giant Terry Brooks and SKIRMISHER Webmaster Michael Varhola. Brooks provides a vision and overall structure for the book, while Varhola draws on both his real-world experience and imagination to create comprehensive chapters on arms, armor, and armies; fantastic cultures based on those of our real world; and traditional fantasy cultures. Other chapters cover clothing and costumes, magic, monsters and creatures, denizens of a fantasy world, and just about every other topic needed to fully explore this fantasic subject.

5 out of 5 stars A must, for fantasy writers........2000-10-24

If you have ever thought of writing a great fantasy novel, but were intimidated because you did not know the difference between a cape and a cowl, or an axe and a mace, this book is for you.

The authors have superbly listed descriptions of everything from types of dress, typical lifestyles, and governing systems for your medieval settings. Not only is this a great reference tool, but when I am looking to just write for fun (or practice), I often use this book to create a minor scenario that I can build on.

I suggest you get this book while it is still available.

4 out of 5 stars A useful tool for budding fantasy writers.......2000-04-21

As a writer working on my first fantasy novel, I found the book to be pretty informative - especially the parts about the various magic systems that could be used in a story. One of my pet peeves about the fantasy genre is a writer who uses a "point and click" style of magic, as though all the wizard has to do is point a finger at a foe and say PRESTO! I feel that the best magic systems in fantasy novels are the ones that involve preparation and cause and effect, and don't just involve making something out of nothing. One of the things that this book does is help the writer map out a believable system of magic, drawing on forms in our world such as witchcraft, voodoo, etc. The sections on using alternate cultures to base your fantasy worlds on (instead of the tired old Tolkien-esque European one) and weapons and armor were also very helpful. While I do agree with those reviewers that said some of the information in this book was nothing new to serious fantasy readers, I still found it to be very useful.

2 out of 5 stars Way to basic.......2000-04-07

If you are a fantasy guru, and have been studying and reading fantasy books for most of your life... don't bother with this book. It's main intent is geared towards people who have very little experience with fantasy. I found this book to be pretty useless.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Masterful.......2001-02-24

An indspensable achievement: deft, fair, thorough, accurate, convenient, and graceful beyond anything one has a right to expect in a reference work. Duriez both instructs with his easy-yet-encompassing erudition and delights with his deep understanding of Lewis. Most impressive is the detail, whether about essays and books, themes and images, or Lewis's life and the lives of others around him. In short, the worthy complement to Hooper's Companion & Guide.

    5 out of 5 stars A fantastic book on a fantastic author........2000-12-26

With a mind as brilliant as that of C.S. Lewis, you know there's plenty to analyze and Colin Duriez does a magnificent job. This book is a valued accet to my collection of all things Lewis, and though I already knew a great deal about him I am learing more. Covering subjecets as broad as his love of George MacDonald's Phantastes, his friendship with J.R.R. Tolkien, or his views on spiritual longing, Colin Duriez helps us to see inside the mind of the greatest author of all time. This book is a must for any Lewis fan!

4 out of 5 stars Not simply for "Mere Christians" . . ........2000-05-06

Whether you are a seasoned "mere Christian" or simply want to read the man you have heard so much about, this book is worth its weight in gold.

Author Colin Duriez has given us this book to encourage exploration of the mental and imaginative world of C. S. Lewis, both scholar and storyteller. As the title suggests, it is composed in A-Z format for quick reference and casual perusal.

Each entry is extensively cross-referenced giving the reader seemingly unlimited avenues to explore. We are also provided with an exhaustive list of his works (fiction and nonfiction), recommended readings, and more.

Author Colin Duriez is General Books Editor at InterVarsity Press in England and a major authority on C. S. Lewis and his circle. He has done an outstanding job compiling this work.

The Bottom Line: Even if you are not a fan of C. S. Lewis, you owe it to yourself to pick up this volume. An excellent companion or entry point to one of the 20th century's greatest creative minds.

    This is a must read.
