Scary and timely.......2003-03-21
This reads like a novel, but the subject is non-fiction: the disappearance of frogs from our planet, what it means, and what we must do about it. Recommended to all adults and thinking teen-agers who are interested in the planet.
Fantastic! Well researched and written!.......2001-05-19
This is a facinating and gripping tale about an animal that is simple, slimey, and generally not well thought of by humans. Our desensitivity to the legitimate role in our world of reptiles and amphibians (from the bible to the Sound of Music) has left them without an advocate when they need it most. Kathryn Phillips explains why their loss is anything but insignificant.
In the old days, coal miners would take a canary into the mines with them and listen to it sing all day. If the canary stopped singing and fell over dead, the miners didn't stop to wonder why or grieve its passing, they got the heck out of the mine as fast as they could. That was the very reason they took the canary in with them. Frogs are the canaries on this earth. But here on earth, we don't have the easy option of just getting the heck out of here as fast as we can. Kathryn Phillips tells you why with the power of a fiction writer but does it as only a professional journalist could with clarity, accuracy and completeness.
Great book-highly recommended.......2000-04-01
This is a wonderful book which has covers the current issue of declining amphibian populations well in regards to the pet trade, habitat loss and fragmentation, and exotic species as well as specific species such as the golden toad and california's red-legged frog. Its an adventure as well as a source of information. The only reservation I had was that it didn't cover chemicals (pesticides) or frog deformities as issues towards species loss.
Attention all frog lovers!!!!.......1998-12-22
Anyone interested in frogs MUST read this book. It is a thrilling adventure through the days and nights of frog behavior and environmental management that makes you realize just how fragile some aspects of our planet are. This book reads like a novel; you start caring for these small creatures like they were your friends. Hard to put down. Easy to enjoy.

Good Info - Great Photography!.......2007-03-09
This book has good information and is very to the point. It is a very fast read with thorough and accurate information. There are no fish stories or anecdotal tales (which I liked). The photographs are spectacular. The photos alone are worth the price of the book.
Stunning full-page photos of bass and fishing lures........1998-12-30
You'll treasure this book for the truly outstanding and plentiful full-page photos of Bass and lures. No other Bass book like it in that respect. Makes a special gift for any occasion. Any level of bass fisherman, from beginner to expert, will be glad to receive this book as a gift.
An excellent source for experienced and beginner.......1998-01-29
Largemouth Bass by Don Oster is a book that tells it as you'll find it when you go after bass. This book provides information about where to find, what to use, how to use, and when to use. There are dozens of excellent photographs illustrating all the aspects of bass fishing. If you have never fished for bass or you are a veteran angler this book will get you started or validate your fishing knowledge and skill. As a practiced bass angler for three years I found this book contained excellent information that is easy to understand and use.

The best way to learn.......2007-05-23
It is one thing to learn Chinese in a classroom because you have to, it is another thing to learn Chinese because you want to learn it. Learning by route memorization is no match for learning by "going out" memorization. If you want to spend years learning enough Chinese to read a Chinese book, but in the meantime, if what you really want to do is go out into a Chinese community and find your way around, there is no other better way to do it then by reading this book. I use it when I'm in China where I am all alone with no guide, and it is tremendously helpful. I can't read a newspaper yet, but a newspaper isn't for communicating to other people with or getting around town by yourself. Besides, in China, people are more interested in your social skills then your know-it-all skills.
Thought provoking and basic concepts........2006-05-31
This book is basically to introduce the concepts of Chinese script.
If you are new to Chinese, just starting out, I would recommend this book.
Because Chinese script does not have a direct correlation to speaking as western languages do. Chinese dialects are more different than French and Spanish are different in terms of speaking. But, interestingly, they use the same characters in all the dialects for script. Thus they are called dialects instead of languages. (Although the Chinese dialects are spoken differently like different languages, they use the same written symbols.) Because of this nature, some people prefer to learn Chinese script writing and reading seperately from speaking.
For example one may choose to learn speaking by using the Pimsleaur excellant audio course and afterwards learn Chinese script. Or one could learn speech by using Pinyin, using a western alphabit.
Or it may be that you just want to learn to read and write Chinese.
This book is an inexpensive easy place to start to get a feel for Chinese script. By its self this book will not make you literate in Chinese. It is just a starting place to understand the concepts of Chinese language script.
The authors' methodology is to ask questions that you probably won't be able to answer, to get you to think about the concepts and then goes on to expalin the reasoning.
If you are curious about Chinese script, just want to get a feel for how it works, and don't want to spend a lot of money; then I would recommend this book for you.
The one problem I had with this book is that sometimes the characters are printed too small to see all the strokes. The strokes sort of blend in togeather.
To be literate in Chinese script, you will need to purchase more advanced books.
Upside down book - very unhelpful.......2005-10-10
I am in Beijing at the moment, working and trying to learn the language and although I don't normally write reivews I was moved to by the sheer illogical nature of this book. The characters are put alongside the English definitions without pinyin to help with the pronunciation! What is the point in learning characters if you can't vocalise them?
I cant imagine that there is anyone who wants to learn chinese script without being able to speak first or practice their learning by speaking?!! Even if you want to write first then it would be a good and logical learning tool to be able to learn the sound at the same time as writing the character!!!
Very poor!.......2005-04-13
As someone whos family is 1/2 Chinese, and who understands a little Cantonese I found this book almost impenetrable! As early as page 4 it asks you to 'remember' things it never told you! By page 10 the average western reader will have resigned this volume to propping up a wobbly fridge, Which is about as useful as this book will EVER be to it's stated target audience.....
I learned more about reading Chinese from my 6-Y/O niece who attends Chinese School!
Presumaby Ms Scurfield understands A Chinese language (which one? I wonder!) and logic better than she does English! to the beginner in Chinese this is worse than useless. To those who might have learned a little of one of the spoken Chinese languages...... Well it didn't help me; and I CAN hold my own in Cantonese!
Don't waste your money; why they spared ink on this is beyond me!
A lot reading, few writing.......2004-06-22
When I bought this book, I was hoping I could learn how to read AND write Chinese characters, but this book did not achieve this goal. The book only dedicates one chapter for writing Chinese characters and hardly gives the stroke order of other characters in later chapters. Also, it never shows you the written forms of characters which can be different from the computer typed forms. The book is also very overwhelming by presenting a lot of characters in a short period of time. The only logic I see to this is developing your reading skills, which is good. That's why I give this book three stars. However, when I tried to write the characters, it was very difficult. One last thing I do not like about the book is that it only presents simplified characters. It is necessary to learn both Simplified and Traditional Characters in order to understand Chinese, since Traditional characters are becoming more popular lately. A good book for learnig how to write both Simplified and Traditional Characters is 250 Essential Chinese Characters for every day use (Volumes 1 and 2)By Philip Yungkin Lee.

Really nice book.......2007-07-31
I got this book for my life drawing class and I really like this book. It does not teach anatomy or proportion. It shows the classical way of doing figure drawing and how to do finish rendering. It's more traditional approach and really helpful. I have learned a lot from it.
Good for drawing "live".......2006-07-17
Very usefull, very pleasant to read. I was expecting more explanations about the relationship between anatomy and the human pose, but it's more about how to look at the model to draw it well.
Thank God for an excellent figurative painter!.......2006-03-04
Ryder's book is a delight to leaf through, looking at the excellent life drawings in red earth, done with the same accuracy and passion as the masters of the past.
He gives a very clear account of how to tackle the drawing in phases, until it is finished.
I would have rated the book a solid 5, were it not that in my opinion Ryder spends too little time giving advice on how to measure proportions, which are the basis of a successful life drawing or portrait. He is undoubtedly a masterful draftsman, but the less experienced artist reading his book would expect to be led step by step on such an important aspect of drawing from life.
Excellent, but..........2005-11-05
The general consensus of the reviews I've read is that this is a fine book, but not for beginners. My take is somewhat different.
First of all, I think this is a fine book for a beginner if she or he is not (unlike most beginners it seems) indignant at the idea of having to have exercise patience and concentration.
Anthony Ryder is a fine draftsman and, to judge from this book, a fine teacher as well. He explains his method quite admirably. How others can think otherwise is a mystery to me. As far as I'm concerned, he does an excellent job of combining instruction in mechanical technique with broader insights into the process of drawing. While I have never met him, I find he comes across in this book as quite a likeable person.
I do, however, have a reservation. The author seems to have little understanding of, or at least does not convey, the limitations of the method he teaches.
For accurately conveying the appearance of still subjects in controlled lighting, I think this method is without better.
Many subjects, however, cannot be portrayed accurately using this method. You simply cannot make a good drawing of a living deer or chickadee, for instance, using this framework. Nor can you portray human subjects that are impractical for studio sessions, for instance a battle scene with many people (try paying just one model for 8 hours of posing) and in positions that no model can hold for very long or at all. All the work of A.R. that I have seen is either of inanimate objects or of human models in relatively leisurely poses, and his method reflects that.
Nonetheless, learning to draw accurately from still life is an essential skill for those who want to do realistic work, and this book is an excellent foundation. However, if you want to work with subjects other than lounging models and objects on table tops, you will need to go beyond it.
Figure Drawing.......2005-08-12
Mr. Ryder has compiled wonderful book for the figure drawing beginer that includes many types of drawings and drawing media, from pencil to charcoal to pastels. It is extremely well ilustrated with many great tips for the beginers. This is a book that I highly recomend for those just starting to those are already on their way.
