Book Description
An unmatched reference work distinguished by its erudition and beauty, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is an illustrated who's who of prehistoric life, a Baedeker of more than 500 million years of evolution on Earth.
With entries for more than 600 species, each arranged in its evolutionary sequence, the book presents a panorama of enormous diversity, from predatory dinosaurs to primitive amphibians, from giant armored fish to woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and dire wolves. Each entry features a specially commissioned full-color painting prepared according to the best research of today in close collaboration with world-renowned paleontologists. The records of the rocks -- fossil bones, teeth, skin, hair and even footprints and nests -- have been combined with knowledge of the anatomy and behavior of present-day descendants to arrive at informed judgments about posture, color and other aspects of appearance.
Lively and informative "biographies" of the creatures accompany these remarkable illustrations: how they moved, what they ate, where they ranged and the habitats and ecological niches they occupied. Comparisons are made wherever possible with familiar living animals, highlighting both the contrasts and similarities. Also included are articles on subjects such as the time scale of evolution, fossil formation and interpretation and convergent evolution.
Truly a magnificent sourcebook, The Simon & Schuster Encyclopedia of Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Creatures is both a triumph of scholarship and a work of art. It will stand as the best and most accurate presentation of the prehistoric animal world available.
Customer Reviews:
An engrossing and informative volume for laymen or experts.......2005-02-09
This volume is the best one I've found on prehistoric creatures. Having always been fascinated by them, I wanted as an adult to find something to broaden the base I'd built as a kid obsessed with Tyrannosaurus and trilobites. Though I'm far from a paleontologist or even a biologist (my own training is in anthropology and linguistics) I find this book a pleasure to browse and consult.
Beginning with the earliest worm-like organisms and evolving through the early fish, amphibians and armored sea creatures, the book continues on up through dinosaurs, Pleistocene megafauna and finally simians and hominids. The desciptions are brief but seem informative, but it is the quality of the artwork that I value most. I never tire of looking at the colorful depictions of the denizens of Devonian swamps, Ordovician seas and Jurassic forests.
So, while I cannot pretend to be an authority, and though I certainly must defer some credibility and ask that you look at my review in conjunction with those of my fellow critics who disagree, I offer my personal recommendation on this book to any person interested in prehistoric life and what it must have been like.
Engaging at first, but then the flaws ..........2000-07-04
This book looked great at first, but then, on closer inspection, the drawings are second-rate, the information is thin, and the inaccuracies mount. Yet, there are no real alternatives that seek to comprehensively catalogue ancient life. I'd still buy it, but my enthusiasm has waned.
On the second thought..........2000-02-24
Several months after acquiring the book I leaf through it and wonder how I could have given it such a high rating as I did. It has flaws throughout!
- The book appears to have a drastic shortage of species to list - it is only half as thick as Simon and Schuster's Encyclopedia of Animals - despite the fact that on numerous occasions they list but one or two species from a thirty-species family;
- The art is severely degraded from the above mentioned encyclopedia of animals. While I can see the puzzlement concerning the colors of the creatures' hides, there is no excuse for the the sloppy drawings of several of the animals! If you make a conjecture, please, be sure to follow through! On several of the animals the hair cover fails to obey the laws of physics, and most of the amphibians look like a horrid joke.
- The information is sketchy at best - on numerous occasions special biological mechanisms are mentioned (like a new jaw bone arrangement for the fishes, and the skull structures of the early land animals), yet are never explained in function. Almost all species are captioned with the basics like weight and dimensions followed with senseless filler.
- The between-section class summarizations and the cladistic graphs are also very, very basic. While I understand that the book was not intended for specialists, even the basic layman will find the charts a bit "dumbed down".
This book is flashy and artful, but lacking, lacking a great lot.
An incredible work.......1999-12-28
I have always longed for such a book. Probably it's a grave mistake on my part to make that the firt sentense of a review, but still. I daresay, anyone who has ever been in the very least intereste in paleontology has always longed for this sort of tome. The authors have satisfied both our love of visuals ( pictures are abundant - they accompiny every entry, in full blazing color by very trustworthy artists, generally sure to catch anyone's eye) and our love of the unknown ( this is the first non-specialist book that I have seen that goes beyond the everyday banal creatures like the pachycephalosaurus and the pterosaurids). This book is sheer pleasure while doing any sort of research, even for the specialists who need solid information. Perhaps there isn't quite enough data with every entry ( due to page limits), but the information that is included is accurate and up-to-date. This is a very good book.
Fascinating pictures and fascinating text !.......1999-11-10
I have been looked for such a book for a long time, and now I have it. Reading this book is delightful, as it gives you plenty of informations about prehistoric animals in a very attractive manner. You have very nice pictures of all animals, with a short explanation giving all essential data about them (size, anatomic singularities, food habits, ...). In addition, extremely interesting introducing sections give you a vision of each branch of animals, together with explanations on the evolutionary process concerning them.
This very up-to-date pictorial guide to now disappeared animals is a treasure for anybody interested in evolution and diversification of life. It gives you enough matter to become a specialist in this domain ! If you want to have one book on dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals, make it be this one.

Book Description
This Conversational program contains 8 hours of interactive audio-only instruction, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.
HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT
What is the Pimsleur® difference?
The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Mandarin Chinese structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Mandarin Chinese can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.
The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.
When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.
With Pimsleur you get:
- Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
- Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
- The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
- 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.
Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.
Conversational Mandarin Chinese includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Mandarin Chinese plus an additional 6 lessons.
The 16 lessons in Conversational Mandarin Chinese are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Mandarin Chinese Level 1.
Customer Reviews:
Pimsleur Works for Me!.......2007-10-03
I've bought various language aids over the years, but never really got far with them. The Pimsleur method of learning solely through audio recordings helped me stick with it. The beauty of this system is that it allows you to immerse yourself in learning vocabulary and gets you to start speaking immediately. I highly recommend it as the initial purchase for a language you have never studied before (but it's great for review as well). The words are broken down phonetically, and phrases introduced in the beginning are reinforced in later lessons. I also have found that not incorporating the written aspect to studying a language at the start lets you simply learn to speak it, without getting hung up on learning new characters. You can always learn those later.
An Excellent quick way to learn Chinese.......2007-07-08
Great product, easy to learn and memorize.
I use it in my car and in few days began speaking basic Chinese.
Conversational Mandarin Chinese: Learn to Speak and Understand Mandarin with Pimsleur Language Programs (Simon & Schuster's).......2007-06-29
The approach is very effective. You learn by repetition. You don't have to revisit each lesson as you progress to the rest of the lessons as review of the previous lesson is carried forward to the next lesson.
A Great Gateway To Mandarin .......2007-06-02
I would highly recommend Pimsler to anyone learing beginning Mandarin because it uses effective teaching techniques. For example, it teaches you words, and then phrases, and helps you to retain them by asking questions that require you to employ them. I listen on my IPod as I commute on the train, and it's a plesaurable, engaging way to pass the time.
I have received several curious looks, particularly from Chinese folk, after speaking poor quality Mandarin aloud, but my accent is slowly improving. At first, I was utterly uninteligible. Then, after just 6 units of Pimsler, I actually was able to carry on a brief conversation with a Mandarin speaking telemarketer last night.
In Mandarin, I said, "Hi." I asked her if she spoke English. I told her that I didn't speak that well. I told her I didn't understand her (even though I did). Perhaps more importantly, I understood most of her responses! I asked her if she knew where College Road was when I started running out of things I knew how to say. She seemed a bit puzzled by that, so I just said, "Thank you," and hung up.
If you've ever been intimidated by the prospect of learning Mandarin, you don't have to be. It does require you to use your brain, but, as long as you can take some time to listen (e.g., while commuting), you can learn.
Enjoy!
Simple & Limited--But HIGHLY Effective.......2007-05-07
I'm through lesson 5 so far, and I've probably only learned 10-12 exchanges. But my native Chinese students tell me my accent is amazing--and I've had no previous Asian language experience. What these lessons do is make you repeat variations of the same basic question (for instance, "Do you speak English?"), and they are designed to make you pay close attention to the tones. Tones are key! I'm learning now for a trip to China, but I will probably start experimenting with other Pimsleurs when I return to pick up some Korean and Japanese just for talking to the many Asian people at my job and in New York City, where I live. I highly recommend this set.

Customer Reviews:
Too Rigid and No Tracks.......2006-03-24
I found Pimsleur's Chinese (Mandarin) (Instant Conversation) to be too rigid and presented far too little vocabulary for my taste.
I have no complaints about the fact that there is no written material since I do all of my language learning in the car.
I do not like the fact that there are no tracks. Switching tracks is essential to in-car language learning unless you like listeneing to the same segment three thousand times over every day.
I like the Language Dynamics Behind the Wheel method more. The Chinese course doesn't have a book either but they have more vocabulary and multiple tracks and two native Mandarin speakers.
Behind the Wheel Chinese is Much More Effective.......2006-03-12
As a foreign language instructor who knows the ropes (je connais les ficelles de mon metier) I too was quite disappointed with my experience with Pimsleur Instant Communication Chinese.
Behind the Wheel Chinese taught more vocabulary and then taught me how to combine and compound it so that even a limited number of words gave me the ability to communicate greatly in Mandarin Chinese.
I attribute the lion's share of what I now speak in Mandarin to Behind the Wheel Mandarin.
I would highly recommend you try this course first and not later as I did. It could well be the only Mandarin CD course you will ever need.
It is that good.
Disappointing.......2006-03-11
A lot of people gave this very high reviews so I was quite disappointed when I bought it. I am a translator/interpreter by profession (for some Western languages) and I teach languages so I know a lot about langauge learning. The advantage of the material is that they really drill in the information. They review everything again and again.
The bad part is that really, you are covering a very small number of vocabular items and topics. You learn the basic greetings, asking some directions, counting and ordering in a restaurant. Chapter after chapter, you have the same dialogue that is built on. So really, all of the units are there to help you understand 3-4 sentences which are 5-6 sentences in length. They have this bizarre obsession with things like "Long Peace Street" etc. I would have preferred a wider range of topics and vocabulary.
Also, the program seems pretty much devoid of cultural information. We have scenes of a man asking a woman to "go to her place" to eat lunch etc. All harmless but these things can be misconstrued in a Chinese cultural context. We also have a woman going to a restaurant alone with a man to drink beer. Or when the Chinese speaker tells the foreigner his Chinese is good, he says, "Thank you" - In some contexts, this can be considered boasting and people should know about the more humble "Nali Nali"-- I don't deserve your praise.
I'm not saying the course is bad, I'm saying that I personally did not get a lot out of it. For the vocab items and topics you get, I think there are better options out there, like Colloquial Chinese by Kan Qian and others.
Mandarin Chinese.......2005-10-12
It's OK, but you really need a more formal lesson if you want to be proficient.
Win friends and Influence people.......2005-06-01
I have completed the instant conversation series and purchased Pimsleur Mandarin I. The method works, although I had to run through the eight CDs three times before I felt comfortable with the language. Lessons 1 and 2 introduce about 30 vocabulary words. The subsequent lessons introduce about 10 new words each. Lessons 1 through 8 cover the to be infinitive as well as what, when, and where questions. Action verbs are also covered: to speak, to eat, to drink, to go, and to buy. In addition, intention expressions of going to, would like to, and wanting to are covered. Lessons 9 through 16 thoroughly cover telling time and counting in situations where money is exchanged. If you are serious about learning Mandarin, listening is okay, but having a teacher to explain the mechanics of producing the sound would be better. I found that the many "ch_w" and "sh_w" sounds in Mandarin were difficult to distinguish on the CDs. Consider, for example, the English words "shower" and "chowder". On the CDs, the words are spoken with varying emphasis by both a man and a woman, and that helps. However, consider getting help with pronunciation from a native speaker. Mandarin sentences and phases are requested in a random fashion, making it impossible to memorize a CD, unlike an eye chart. So playing a CD while driving is a good review. However, be sure to set aside one half hour per day per lesson in complete quiet to learn new material. After these 16 lessons you will be able to win friends and influence people, on the job or on vacation, with a few select phrases.

Most progress I've ever made..........2007-08-18
The idea behind CC301 are the 301 basic conversational sentences, which are (as the authors intended) pretty quick to learn. The textbook then builds on these basic sentences via substitutions, expansions, and sample conversations. I've tried a lot of textbooks and CDs and, so far, I've made the most progress using CC301.
This is the 2nd ed. of CC301; currently there is a 3rd. ed. (which splits the 1st ed. book into two halves) but I've found this text book works just fine with the two 3rd. ed. CD sets (essential!) covering the 1st and 2nd halves of this 1st ed.
The CDs are essential to learning the sound and correct pronunciation of the language.

Makes Speaking Mandarin Easy.......2005-09-17
I have successfullly used Language Dynamics Japanese with great results.
I turned to them for help when deciding to 'move on' to Mandarin Chinese.
I was frankly amazed at how simple it was for me to become conversational in basic Mandarin through my use of Language Dynamics' Conversational Chinese in Nothing Flat.
The two native speakers (the female was a radio announcer for the People's Republic and both teach conversational Mandarin at a prestigious university) and the other male voice were incredibly clear and easy to duplicate.
The learning system is fantastic. Imagine sentence building in Mandarin with no grammar and no college coursework and then going out and speaking with natives like I did and being understood.
Sure. I am far from fluency. But I am so encouraged by my progress and the comments I get from Chinese friends who tell me they can't believe how far I have come in so little time.
Fast and VERY EASY way to learn on heck of a lot of a very difficult language.
How To Speak Mandarin Easily in One Simple Step.......2005-03-29
I purchased this product thinking it would be the answer to my prayers and I am delighted to say that it has exceeded my expectations in every way.
I have traveled and done business in China for a number of years, but I never got serious about learning to speak this difficult and challenging language until I heard about the Language Dynamics method.
Neither my wife nor anyone in my family is Chinese. I am 100% American and so my perspective is that of someone with no cultural or linguistic advantages or biases.
Conversational Chinese have proven to be a godsend for the following reasons:
1. Easy to learn. Unlike my experience with other courses, I was actually speaking real
and original sentences IN MANDARIN within the first couple of hours with the course and was UNDERSTOOD by native speakers in China. Wow.
2. Two voices are on the CDs. The female voice (according to the article I read) used to work as a radio voice for the Chinese government. The male voice is also very clear and easy to understand. Both (of course) are native speakers of Mandarin.
3. I found the periodic retrieval method of review in this course to be most effective in assisting me in remembering what I was learning.
4. Great vocabulary, which I must emphasize again, was taught in a communicative context where you learned to use it naturally and not just 'parrot' the native speakers.
Believe me. When learning a foreign language (especially Chinese) you are really deaf dumb and blind unless you have a clear English speaking facilitator to assist you in learning. This course has it all and more.
I recommend you buy this course immediately and then compare it to Pimsleur and see for yourself how much better Language Dynamics really is.
How to become demoralised in one easy lesson!.......2005-03-28
I purchased this product thinking it would be the answer to my prayers!Well I am sorry to say I was wrong.
I have lived in China since 2003, but only recently decided to start working hard to learn Mandarin. I started with Pimsleurs's Quick & Simple, but then decided that I needed something more structured.
Unfortunately this is not the answer, the first thing my wife (a Mandarin teacher) noticed is that the female speaker pronounces certain words poorly, not a good start. From my point of view being only a little better than a beginner, I found it infuriating. The American speaker would say, " how do you say, I like the Spring",the Chinese speaker would say this twice, Ok so far. Instead of reinforcing the , 'I like the' part of the phrase and just adding a new word at the end, they go on to a completely different kind of phrase. This is not a good way to teach any language, you need to build the learners confidence by just adding one new word to learn at a time, otherwise they will almost certainly give-up!
My job here in China is teaching teenagers to speak better English, if I were to use the same techniques as this course all of my students would give-up I am sure.
If you are like me, over fifty, poor at learning languages and a beginner in Mandarin, "DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT"

Book Description
"As Harrison ably shows, photos can inspire, capture what won't stay still, or serve as a personal reference file...[This is] a good first choice."--Library Journal
"A very helpful resource for both artist and art educator."--School Arts
A camera can instantly capture a fleeting moment in time--that shifting quality of light, a flash of emotion across a face--and preserve it for artists to paint at their leisure. Make your photographs an invaluable inspiration for great paintings with this inspirational guide. A technical discussion covers cameras, lenses, viewpoints, and depth of field. Themed mini-galleries place source photographs and the paintings they motivated side-by-side--including a photo of Paris by night that, in the artist's hands, becomes a glittering, romantic pastel of the city. Eight in-depth profiles of painters feature a selection of their art, conversations about their working methods, and a tutorial that follows the progression from photograph to painting.
Customer Reviews:
Now I SEE!.......2000-06-11
Whether photographing landscapes or close subjects, I could never remember what caught my eye or why I wanted to paint it. Harrison's book solved that problem.
She walks you through the various cameras and lenses to use, simple techniques of photography and then the best part; cropping, combining different photos, handling the lights and darks of your photos and composition. Then to the painting....she frees your mind to paint as YOU want to see it, choosing your own colors and giving it your own signature. In going through my photos once again, now I SEE why I took those photos! What was once dead, is now alive and begging to be painted.
