Where has this been all my life?.......2004-09-16
I have loved horses and have been riding all my life. I have worked hard on my riding, to make my aids clear and to respect the horse. After one reading of this book, I got on an older, retired show horse that we bought primarily to have someone gentle enough for friends to ride, and in just a couple of minutes she was transformed by how much better I was riding. She went from being slightly annoyed that she was having to work to being crisp and bright, and responding instantly to my newly-learned skills. She worked much better than she ever has for me. Wow.
When I read this book I was skeptical. Isn't riding about feeling? Won't I be too self-conscious and fail to attend to the horse and go with him if I "try" too hard? Turns out these beliefs are wrong, and the horse told me so.
The photos and descriptions are extremely helpful. I found this book easier to understand than Ride With Your Mind Essentials. You might think Essentials would be the place to start, but for me the drawings in Essentials were much less useful than the photos in this book, and much of the Essentials text was too brief and didn't explain enough--I wouldn't have understood if I hadn't read this book first.
Essentials has a number of additional pieces to the puzzle, and I think will be much harder work. So I'd recommend it too, just start with this one, especially if you have looked at Essentials and it seems intimidating to you.
This book saved me!.......2003-02-25
I highly recommend Mary Wanless and her teachings. I was at the point of quitting riding. It had become a torture for my horse and myself. I felt that because I wasn't naturally talented I was destined to never progress beyond the point I was at. A friend recommended I read Ride with your Mind: Masterclass after listening to my feelings. It was like a whole new world opened to me within the first few pages. I'm excited about riding again and my horse seems happier with my new attitude. Reading this book was the greatest gift I could have ever given myself and my horse.
What exactly is "feel"? This book has the answers!.......2000-11-02
This book is a touch repetitive, and occaisionally new-agey, which could put a lot of horsey people off, but I strongly suggest you persist. If you have "feel" problems this may change your whole perspective! It's also a great source of ideas for teachers with problem pupils, I'd recommend it for teaching people exactly why position does matter.

This book turned the unknown and terrifying into the wonerful world of riding I know today. It is an easy to read, practical guide that you will not want to let out of your sight, and will want to read and refer to time and time again.

Made me hate Spanish........2006-12-28
This book, along with the CDs, were required for my college Spanish class. I didn't know Spanish before the book, and seriously after almost a full semester of taking my Spanish class (1 month short, I dropped), I can't even form a full phrase by myself. The book is very unstructured, and often teaches the same thing two or three times as though you've never learned it before. The book, along with the lab manual lack ENGLISH! My teacher said the best way to learn a foreign language is to teach in the language (ie. not English). This may be true for very young kids who are still piecing together their own native language, but you cannot achieve adequate immersion in a classroom setting for only an hour or two every couple days.
This book's Spanish to English and visa versa reference is horrible. It doesn't even reference certain key words in phrases you're supposed to be able to translate for the assignments. It's completely fundamentally flawed for anyone over the age of 13. As I said, for younger kids, it may work, but for those of us who have a solid understanding of English - save your money. You'll only become confused and frustrated if you don't have a lot of help.
how not to learn a language.......2006-02-22
I moved to spain a year ago, but in the 6 months before i left nyc i decided to take a spanish class to give me a head start.
my teacher was a native spanish speaker, so i trusted his decision when he required this book. i should'nt have.
i quickly realized (after 3 lessons) that you don't learn a foreign language by memorizing list of related vocabulary. i'm sure we all remember that from high school, but how many of us actually learned how to speak a language that way, no one.
once in spain and entered in a school with a real book, i realized that you learn by natural assimilation of ideas. A chapter or theme might start with a silly picture or story, and go from there. as the topic is further discussed, it brings in further vocabulary in a way that is natural.
memorizing lists works for no one!

I found this book quite easy to understand and well organized compared to previous spanish textbooks I've worked with. It's loaded with tons of practical examples and activities, and unlike many other texts has a heavy concentration in internet and high tech terms.

As a beginnng Spanish student, I find the book cluttered and overwhelming. Also, a more organized approach to the subject would help. My foreign language background is French, so I am familiar with how to study a different language.
Wonderfully-creative and proficiency-oriented text.......2002-06-11
This is by far the best beginning text that I have found in twenty-four years of teaching. The high-interest level of the text with the easy-to-understand explanations and interactive activities make this book very accessible to even the student with no prior background in Spanish. At the same time, the wealth of activities including proverbs, cartoons, business Spanish, dialogues, open-ended conversations, problem solving, cultural information along with the CD's, videos, and internet activities, also challenge and interest the student who may already have some knowledge of Spanish. The text uses a communicative and personalized approach that allows the student to develop skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension. The writing assignments and classroom drills are not dry and boring as in some texts but very creative and often humorous which helps make teaching with this text a joy. Each edition of the text has incorporated new material to meet the needs of our students. I especially like the segments in this edition on computer technology, letter writing, medical Spanish, and environmental and social discussions. After completing this text, most of my students are inspired and encouraged to continue their study of Spanish. Many of my Spanish majors enjoy this text so much that they keep it for reference instead of selling it back to the bookstore. I have built several successful Spanish programs using this text and have many fluent students who adored the text. The bottom line is that this text has personality as well as being highly useful. I love it!

The book comprises a collection of 11 essays by world-renowned Leonardo connoisseurs, along with 515 exquisite illustrations, to create a perfect balance between scholarship and aesthetics. Serving as the catalogue for the exhibition of the same name at New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, the book focuses on Leonardo's drawings: his studies for some of his unfinished, lost, or unrealized paintings and projects, stunning anatomical and engineering studies, 8 pages from the Codex Leicester (Leonardo's draft for a treatise on the dynamics of water), and his studies of grotesque physiognomies, which taken together, reveal the master's notion that beauty and ugliness are reciprocally enhanced by their juxtaposition. Not worth the money. The reproductions are good, but most of them are small and many of Leonardo's most famous drawings are not included. Also, I couldn't care less about the views of art critics. I just want to see the drawings.

This book is written for art enthusiasts. The potential
readership includes historians, artists, museum curators
and students of world culture, art and history. The work
is perfect for a term or class project.
It has many famous
drawings and paintings by DaVinci. For instance, the spectacular
"Adoration of the Magi" appears in full color. There are
numerous apprenticeship drawings and renditions on the anatomy
of humans and animals. For instance, there is a very detailed
rendition of a horse leg. This work would make a wonderful
gift for a teenager or art buff. The full-color drawings alone are worth several dollars
apiece. The book is a tremendous value .
The Definitive Tome on da Vinci as genius.......2003-05-03
LEONARDO DA VINCI: MASTER DRAFTSMAN is a magnificent addition to the library about this extraordinary Renaissance genius. Published as a 'catalogue' for the exhibition that just left the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the weighty book is successful on all levels. The Curator and driving force fo the exhibition, Carmen C. Bambach, has firmly established her credentials in this vast survey of da Vinci's drawings of human anatomy, both precise observations (eg 'Abdomen and Left Leg of a Nude Man Standing in Profile page 556) and artistic distortions ( the grotesque faces on pages 684 - 693), of his 'inventions' as a scientist, of simple observations ('A Copse of Trees'on page 469 for instance), of the technical aspects of drawing and painting (brilliantly executed examples of draping the figure as on pages 289 and 563), and sketches for numerous painting proposals. The first 225 pages of this elegant book are devoted to various essays about da Vinci, all written by erudite scholars who are immensely readable. The last half of the book is an in-depth presentation of the catalogue of the show, serenely annotated by Carmen Bambach. There are ample sections of documentation and easy references to the bibiliography and timeline for da Vinci's life. The drawings and paintings are beautifuly reproduced on first quality paper and the book, (though heavy as a lap book!), is artistically designed and produced. This magnificent volume will be the gold standard for da Vinci's drawings and should be part of every library on the Renaissance and on art history. Highly Recommended.
