Book Description
In its first edition, The Holocene provided undergraduates with a much-needed coherent scientific account of the great transformation of nature that had taken place during the Holocene, the last 10,000 years in the history of the planet and the period in which we are all now living. This period has included major shifts in climate and human culture, and in the natural environment at every level. Completely revised and updated to take full account of the most recent advances, the new edition of this established text includes substantial material on scientific progress in the understanding of climate change and abrupt climatic events, of disturbance effects on the landscape, and of ice core records. Not only have improved dating methods, such as luminescence, been included but the timescale for the book has been moved to calendar (i.e. real) years. Coverage and supporting case study material have also been broadened and extended.

Very Interesting.......2003-01-18
I am by no means an expert on climatology or paleoclimatology. An actuary by trade, I enjoy reading books about evolution and prehistory. When I saw this book, I figured it would be good for a type of background reading to help me more fully understand what went on during the Holocene and how it affected humans.
While it did not really make that connection, I did find it pretty interesting. He explains the different techniques of dating and why you would use them. It is facinating that the experts can determine so much information about the local environment over, say, a meter long core sample from the bottom of a lake. It didn't get too technical until the last chapter where he was discussing the impact of pollution on the environment.
The last chapter sums up nicely the major developments of the last 11,000 years and also discusses why viewing nature as a static entity is not the proper way for conservationalists to look at it. All and all a good read for those interested in weather and the transformation of the earth.
Lucid, clear, a textbook for all audiences.......1999-02-24
Most advances in human understanding currently come from a conjunction of specialisms: archaeology uses nuclear physics. This textbook is built on clear accounts of the joints between geology and palaeontology, human anthropology and global climate change - and much more. But it is more than that. Roberts has crafted a textbook to be used by any entrant to the field. He is lucid. He offers logical cause and effect yet is clear about contradiction. Anyone interested in the era will enjoy the contributions from many disciplines integrated in an enthusiastic whole. If you are interested, go for it.
Superb basic introduction to paleo- and human ecology.......1998-12-14
As an undergraduate student at prescott College, I conducted an independent study in Quaternary Ecology in general and of the American Southwest in particular. I came across this book while browsing the shelves at another college library. I was looking for a few texts to give me a good basic background on paleoecology, and after scanning this one, requested that our school library purchase it. When it arrived, I was informed, and I immediately appropriated it for my exclusive use. This book, together with Delcourt's and Delcourt's book, Quaternary Ecology: a paleoecological perspective would make a good text for a college environmental studies course. That is how I used it. Now I want to own a copy.

Book Description
The global environment is changing rapidly under the impact of human activities. An important element in this change is related to global climate modification. Experts from the natural and social sciences with a strong interest in history discussed common topics of great interest to society. Can the study of climate and history help in devising strategies for coping with this change? What might be the type of information most useful in this context? What are the pitfalls awaiting the unwary? These and similar questions were discussed during a four-day workshop. The resulting proceedings contain comprehensive papers of broad interest, thematic back-ground papers and reports of study groups. Apart from scientists, the papers should interest graduate students and lecturers.

Description:
Organic microfossils of a well-dated sediment core from Gotland Basin were analysed and used for the ecological interpretation of the Holocene history of this area. To avoid confusion with corrected and uncorrected ^1^4C ages, only calendar years BP are used. In the lowermost part organic microfossils are rare, but few marine dinoflagellate cysts between 11300 and 11000 years BP indicate the marine Yoldia Phase. At 9800 years BP a significant environmental change is indicated by the rapid increase of freshwater dinoflagellates and pine pollen. At the end of the freshwater stage an enormous abundance increase of cladoceran remains indicates an eutrophication event between 7600 and 7400 years BP. First permanent brackish water conditions of the surface water were established at 7400 years BP and the increasing salinity reached its maximum between 6700 and 6400 years BP. Further changes in the brackish surface water ecosystem of the Gotland Basin can be found at 5500, 4400, 3000, 1000, and 800 years BP, which are thought to be mainly climatically induced.

Description:
An 1180-cm long core recovered from Lake Lyadhej-To (68^o15' N, 65^o45' E, 150 m a.s.l.) at the NW rim of the Polar Urals Mountains reflects the Holocene environmental history from ca. 11,000 cal. yr BP. Pollen assemblages from the diamicton (ca. 11,000-10,700 cal. yr BP) are dominated by Pre-Quaternary spores and redeposited Pinaceae pollen, pointing to a high terrestrial input. Turbid and nutrient-poor conditions existed in the lake ca. 10,700-10,550 cal. yr BP. The chironomid-inferred reconstructions suggest that mean July temperature increased rapidly from 10.0 to 11.8 ^oC during this period. Sparse, treeless vegetation dominated on the disturbed and denuded soils in the catchment area. A distinct dominance of planktonic diatoms ca. 10,500-8800 cal. yr BP points to the lowest lake-ice coverage, the longest growing season and the highest bioproductivity during the lake history. Birch forest with some shrub alder grew around the lake reflecting the warmest climate conditions during the Holocene. Mean July temperature was likely 11-13 ^oC and annual precipitation-400-500 mm. The period ca. 8800-5500 cal. yr BP is characterized by a gradual deterioration of environmental conditions in the lake and lake catchment. The pollen- and chironomid-inferred temperatures reflect a warm period (ca. 6500-6000 cal. BP) with a mean July temperature at least 1-2 ^oC higher than today. Birch forests disappeared from the lake vicinity after 6000 cal. yr BP. The vegetation in the Lyadhej-To region became similar to the modern one. Shrub (Betula nana, Salix) and herb tundra have dominated the lake catchment since ca. 5500 cal. yr BP. All proxies suggest rather harsh environmental conditions. Diatom assemblages reflect relatively short growing seasons and a longer persistence of lake-ice ca. 5500-2500 cal. yr BP. Pollen-based climate reconstructions suggest significant cooling between ca. 5500 and 3500 cal. yr BP with a mean July temperature 8-10 ^oC and annual precipitation-300-400 mm. The bioproductivity in the lake remained low after 2500 cal. yr BP, but biogeochemical proxies reflect a higher terrestrial influx. Changes in the diatom content may indicate warmer water temperatures and a reduced ice cover on the lake. However, chironomid-based reconstructions reflect a period with minimal temperatures during the lake history.

Description:
The western part of the Chinese Loess Plateau has experienced a series of environmental changes during the Holocene. A desert-steppe of late glacial was succeeded by a forest-steppe from 8850 to 7540 ^1^4C years BP, and a Pinus-dominated forest occupied the landscape from 7540 to 6560 ^1^4C years BP. A deciduous forest of high density and diversity existed from 6560 to 5790 ^1^4C years BP. Afterwards the vegetation changed to a Pinus-dominated forest-steppe (5790-4950 ^1^4C years BP) and then to an Ulmus-dominated forest-steppe (4950 to ~4000 ^1^4C years BP). The vegetation subsequently changed to a steppe from ~4000 to 3120 ^1^4C years BP and further to a desert-steppe from 3120 to 2900 ^1^4C years BP. After a period of vegetation improvement (steppe) from 2900 to 2460 ^1^4C years BP, a desert-steppe resumed (2460-2020 ^1^4C years BP). Steppe vegetation was re-established around 2020 ^1^4C years BP and seems to have then deteriorated again around 1000 ^1^4C years BP. The general trend of aforementioned climatic changes is proposed here to have been modulated by the insolation changes. Specifically, the insolation started to increase around 15,000 years BP and peaked around 9000 years BP when the obliquity-driven seasonality reached a maximum with the summer insolation being about 8% more than the present. As a result, tropical Holocene SST increased steadily from ~10,000 to ~6,000 years BP, thus effectively strengthening the East Asian summer monsoon. In addition, the documented high temperatures from 10,000 to 4000 years BP in high northern latitudes might have weakened the strength of the winter monsoon and thus enhanced the strength of the summer monsoon probably via lengthening of the rainy season, directly contributing to the ''megahumid'' climate between 10,000 and 4000 years BP in the western part of the Chinese Loess Plateau.

A valuable resource for divers to increase their knowledge about all diving related topics.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2000-06-26
After taking the PADI Open Water certification class, my dive buddy and myself still felt we had questions that weren't addressed in the beginner class. After looking at all of the available books, this one was the only one that sufficiently answered our questions. I think it would be appropriate for the beginner on up to the advanced.
Excellent book not only for the newbie but for veterans too!.......1999-04-07
For those who are in the beginning stage and would like to pursue a diving career, this book of 100 or more quizzes by Dennis Graver has it all, so to speak. I'd strongly recommend this book to all beginning until instructor level divers since it serves as an excellent reviewer of all the diving skills which you may have learned in class and/or experienced while doing actual diving. I'm impressed especially with the sections on Emergencies, Rescue, Near Drowning, and the like since they are not simply quizzes anymore but serve as guides on dealing with such situations. For all divers, this is the book for us!!!
Excellent for study guide!.......1999-04-04
This is a great book for any diver, has lots of information not found elsewhere. I am currently working on my DiveMaster training and this is a super book for studying and preparing for the test taking.
Great reference tool for all divers........1998-03-28
This is an excellent source of information for the beginning or experienced diver. It covers all aspects of diving from equipment to diving physics. Each page is full of interesting and sometimes challenging multiple choice questions with the complete answers on the following page. It is a must have book for anyone who wants to know more about the sport.

Nothing expresses the vitality, history, and character of a language quite like its idioms. Ask any non-native English speaker to make sense of a phrase such as "beg the question" or "keep your eyes peeled"; they can't do it. Idioms don't translate, which is what makes them such intriguing mirrors of how a culture evolves along with its speech. The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms includes almost 10,000 of these figures of speech, slang phrases, clichés, colloquialisms, and proverbs, from "ace in the hole" to "zoom in on." Each entry defines an idiom, uses it in a sentence, then pinpoints its historical origins when possible. Some idioms, it turns out, preserve words or word uses that have otherwise fallen out of use ("one fell swoop"); others allude to long-forgotten catch phrases from movies or advertising ("more bounce for the ounce"). Consider, for instance the phrase "funny bone"--actually a pun on "humerus," the Latin name for the bone of the upper arm. Or the expression "moment of truth," a translation from the Spanish phrase originally referring to bullfighting--and first popularized, not surprisingly, by Ernest Hemingway. The American Heritage Dictionary of Idioms is like an archeological dig through the vernacular, and it unearths treasures such as these on every one of its pages. All those interested in language or its history should keep a copy on their library shelves.
Book Description
"Bite the bullet", " get on the stick", "make no bones about it", " take the cake". The American Heritage(R) Dictionary of Idioms covers almost 10,000 expressions. Its main fare is, of course, idioms - groups of two or more words that together mean something different from the literal meaning of the individual words. In addition, this book discusses verb phrases such as " act up", "freeze out", and " get down", figures of speech such as "dark horse" and "blind as a bat", interjections and formulas like "says who" and " tough beans", common proverbs like a "bird in the hand", and slang terms such as "buy the farm" and "push up daisies". Each entry is defined and has an example sentence showing the expression in context. Most entries offer an explanation of the expression's literal meaning or origin and include information about its first appearance in English.

idoims.......2005-04-09
If english is your second language it will be usefull for you to have it .it also use most of idioms in sentence as a sample, cool
unimpressive.......2004-12-19
I rarely use this dictionary because I also own Cassell's Dictionary of Slang by Jonathon Green, which is decidedly superior. This Dictionary of Idioms at first seems a more scholarly approach to the subject, but soon falls short of expectations as its selection of words is relatively small and mostly consists of the most well known slang. For more unusual words, I have always had to refer elsewhere.
Excellent Study Aid.......2004-08-31
Really a wonderful reference. It goes to study with me every day now. Very clearly written and descriptive definitions including very good idiom history data.
Some examples - I found more unexpected data on the idiom "by and large" here than in the biggest bulkiest dictionary in the courseroom. Also the idiomatic definition of "washed-out" was the best I've ever read. "Dead as a doornail" was another good one.
This book is now indispensable to me. Bravo to the author!
ARC,
Simon
Disappointing for native English speakers.......2004-05-05
This is probably a great book for people learning English as a second language. But if English is your first language, it's very doubtful that you need it. I don't consider myself very knowledgeable about idioms, yet I could scarcely find more than a few that I didn't already know the meaning of. To an average American, 90 percent of this is useless. One thing I did learn was what "chickens come home to roost" means -- but that's surely not enough knowledge to justify the price of the book.
Perfect idiom resource!.......2001-12-09
If you're looking for the ideal resource for idioms, this is it! Highly recommend!

ESL Teacher Praises Book of Idioms.......2007-02-12
My ESL (English as a Second Language) students love to unravel the mysteries of idioms. New language learners usually think literally; idioms train them to think figuratively. The contents of this book have aided my students in preparing them to become English Language Proficient. Thank you.
pretty good.......2001-02-15
a have owned this dictionary for two months now and i have found it to be VERY up-to-date (when it comes to obsolete expressions) and helpful in reading modern US English literature. The reason i gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because it's not the best for reading the idioms in classical books, again, due to the fact that the old idioms are not all included in this dictionary. overall, however, it is THE dictionary to buy if you want to learn a few idioms you could actually READ in the newspaper, HEAR in public, or NEED to USE in everyday speech. an extremely useful book, i recommend it.

Book Description
This hilariously uplifting memoir follows an Arab American woman's merry life as she shimmies her way from getting dumped by her tattoo-artist boyfriend to coming to grips with being single, ample, and 30. Feeling lost and heartbroken, Anne Thomas Soffee moves back home to Richmond, Virginia. Against the wishes of her extended family and friends, she enrolls in a belly dancing class hoping to heal her heart and reconnect with her Lebanese roots. Her life is never the same after she discovers the riotous world of American belly dancing, a warm and welcoming subculture where younger and thinner are not necessarily better. Wildly funny adventures ensue as a newly confident Soffee embarks on romantic adventures with a domineering sheik and a beautiful Lebanese boy-next-door. Among the zils (finger cymbals) and thrills of attending classes and performing in moose lodges and county fairs, Soffee is surprised to find happiness and true love along the way.
Customer Reviews:
Sassy and fun.......2007-06-10
Dumped by her boyfriend and facing 30, Soffee decides to take up bellydancing to find out more about her ethnic heritage and because it's something to do, dammit. This memoir chronicles her adventures in bellydancing, dating, and ultimately, finding true love. While not a how-to book, the author provides belly dancing resources in her appendix. This story is touching, sassy and smart. A great airplane read.
Fabulous!.......2007-04-01
I never gave the art of belly dancing a second thought prior to reading Anne Thomas Soffee's engaging book. I even researched some belly dancing classes in my local area after I finished reading it because she made it sound like so much fun. Like the author, I think it would be a great way to explore my Lebanese heritage while also getting a chance to shimmy and shake. Her stories of the Arab dating world were painful, yet hilarious, to read. Congratulations to Anne for persevering through one horrible relationship after another to find her true love.
Insight into bellydance, 101.......2007-02-06
This is definitely the better of Anne Soffee's two books. It is sort of a recovery-journal-turned-memoir about finding yourself after adventure turns into disaster, and love leaves you cold on top of it. Her critiques of the bellydance "scene" are pretty spot-on as well, boy I could write a whole book on that alone... having been both a bellydancer and a rock DJ myself, I can identify with many passages in this book. The author's concern with being a closet nerd trying to be rockstar-cool whilst shaking one's ample assets is right up there with my own self-iamge issues. Oh, how the mighty have fallen -- someone who's hobnobbed with big name rock bands suddenly finds herself, thirtysomething, at the local Moose Lodge trying desperately to keep up dancewise with a woman who could be her grandma! Yeah been there done that my sista. The only thing I didn't enjoy was the long list of loser Arab boyfriends that she pursued like some kind of ethnic Holy Grail. I kept saying to myself, why is this woman wasting her time with these goons who obviously were abusive? Why is she giving them more than a passing few paragraphs in her memoirs, when there's so much else to write about? Why does she care so very much that she's only HALF Lebanese??? But I guess the lows make the highs look higher, and when she finds true love in the end it makes the struggle seem worth it. I would recommend this as a fun read for gals who think they've reached the end of their youth too soon or think that there are no more avenues in life to try. Bellydancing IS a wonderfully healing artform and I'm glad to be still dancing to this day.
IT IS SHIMMY-LICIOUS, heartwarming & funny.......2006-12-23
This book was given to me as a birthday present from a good friend (we are both belly dancers of five years). What a gift! I loved it! It was so amusing that I was grinning like an idiot as I read it in the waiting room of a hospital of all places. The author's witty but humble tone was irresistible to me - it made me adore her. From my personal standpoint, I could really relate to her infatuation and developing true love of the dance as I have "been there, done that, am still doing it". But I think that others who aren't belly dancers might find it an interesting "inside peek" to the magic carpet ride of belly dance - the sparkle, the jingle, the glitz, the costumes, the drama, the friendships, the music, the moves, including the not-so-glamorous side of things. Also, as a bi-racial person who actually looks pretty Caucasian as the author kind of describes herself, I could really relate to her reflections on her own mixed ethnicity. I totally "felt her". I can also see how this story could be uplifting to a person recovering from the heartache of a bad breakup. I would have said that this is a good "chick read" for any woman but I can see from the reviews that I would be wrong. It looks like plenty of guys are loving it too. The only bad thing about the book was that I finished it too quickly - I wanted more! Shimmy on!
Not enough magic, too much of a memoir.......2006-09-19
Even though this is not a bad book, I wouldn't say it's a good one either. I just wouldn't recommend it.
First, the author uses a lot of unnecessary bad language, I think while trying to be realistic about her thoughts and feelings, but that instantly took me out of the magic that usually goes with any bellydance-learning journey.
Second, if you are looking for a book about bellydance, or at least a book that gives you some insight on the dance itself, you'll be disappointed by the fact that this one is rather a bellydancer's memoir, and is full of her own disappointing sexual/relationship experiences while tryng to find her prince Ali.
Not everything is bad, though. I like the way she explains that "Chip dand Dale" attitude/face/expression of bellydancers when they are really enjoying their dance and are able to pass that feeling to their audience. Also, there is a very good list of sources at the end that may be useful if you want to know a little bit more about bellydancing (music, websites, etc). But that's about it.
