Book Description
A single-volume approach to the structure and function of the central auditory system of mammals, this richly illustrated book has a unique organization intended to make the information it presents useful to both beginners and experienced researchers. It starts with a concise overview of the subject in the first section, which is then followed by an in-depth treatment of all levels of the central auditory pathway in the next four sections. Ehret and Romand expertly integrate general aspects of sound processing at any given level of the system with special topics relevant to that level. The emphasis shifts from a cellular level of auditory analysis at the first brain center to the interplay of fifteen centers in a maze of connecting loops using various neurotransmitters. The authors then proceed to discuss the organization of topographic maps of neuronal responses in the midbrain, and explain how a highly parallel and hierarchical system of distributed thalamic and cortical information channels can function so that, finally, sounds may be perceived and recognized. This book is intended for both the researcher who needs a quick general reference, and the expert with a more specialized and detailed interest in the subject.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent in depth book on auditory CNS.......2000-08-17
This is an excellent book for those interested in the neurophysiologic detail of how our brains process sound. It is an advanced level textbook suitable for auditory researchers, though the first chapter would be an excellent text for an undergraduate level course.

Book Description
Sensory signals reach the cerebral cortex after having made synapses in different relay stations along the sensory pathway. The flow of sensory information in subcortical relay stations is controlled by the action of precise topographic connections from the neocortex. Several lines of research indicate that the massive corticifugal system improves ongoing subcortical sensory processing and reorganizes the receptive fields in visual, auditory and somatosensory systems. In all these sensory systems cortical neurons mediate both the highly focused positive feedback to subcortical neurons with overlapping receptive fields and a widespread inhibition to "non-matching neurons". This cortical feedback, which has been called "egocentric selection", can play a pivotal role in gating the sensory information that reaches the thalamus and cortex. Thus, corticofugal projections may contribute to selective attention since they enhance neuronal responses for attentionally relevant stimuli and by suppressing sensory responses of distractive stimuli. Also, corticofugal projections enhance oscillatory activity in order to synchronize neurons located in the same or in different relay stations in order to improve sensory processing. In conclusion, corticofugal pathways precisely control sensory transmission throughout the central nervous system.

Book Description
This is the second volume of a definitive work on the neurobiology of hearing, edited by Richard A. Altschuler and his colleagues. The first volume, on the cochlea, published in 1986, was commended by Neuroscienceas;a valuable contribution to auditory literature and cited by Mayo Clinic Proceedings as an important landmark. This second volume provides the same outstanding coverage of the central auditory system. For the first time, the vast, diverse body of current information on the central auditory system is synthesized in a cohesive, logically organized source that makes this complex subject accessible and relevant to otolaryngologists, audiologists, and neurologists, as well as to basic scientists. More than 30 expert contributors systematically examine the anatomy and physiology of the cochlear nucleus, superior olivary complex, and auditory brainstem; the role of these structures in processing complex sounds and integrating monaural and binaural signals; and the latest methods for assessment and prosthetic stimulation of the central auditory system.

Description:
The functional organization of the human auditory cortex is still not well understood with respect to speech perception and language lateralization. Especially, there is comparatively little data available in the brain imaging literature focusing on the timing of phonetic processing. We recorded auditory-evoked potentials (AEP) from 27 scalp and additional EOG channels in 12 healthy volunteers performing a free report dichotic listening task with simple speech sounds (CV syllables: [ba], [da], [ga], [pa], [ta], [ka]). ERP analysis employed independent components analysis (ICA) wavelet denoising for artifact reduction and improvement of the SNR. The main finding was a 15-ms shorter average latency of the N1-AEP recorded from the scalp approximately overlying the left supratemporal cortical plane compared to the N1-AEP over the homologous right side. Corresponding N1 amplitudes did not differ between these sites. The individual AEP latency differences significantly correlated with the ear advantage as an index of speech/language lateralization. The behaviorally relevant difference in N1 latency between the hemispheres indicates that an important key to understanding speech perception is to consider the functional implications of neuronal event timing.

Description:
Sensory information processing in neocortex is associated with rhythmic synchronized gamma frequency firing of sensory cortical units and similar frequency oscillations of the field potentials. Different aspects of the gamma activity (20-80 Hz) have been suggested as correlates of attention, arousal and sensory binding. It is clear that attention has a modality selective influence, while arousal has a more general effect on the sensory systems. We used an experimental conditioning paradigm to separate these differential effects of attention and arousal on spontaneous neocortical gamma activity. We recorded field potentials with epidural electrodes placed above the auditory cortical areas of cats. The animals performed a simple instrumental alimentary conditioning task with different modality (visual and auditory) conditioned stimuli. When they attended to the auditory conditioned stimulus, both frequency and power increase of spontaneous gamma activity were detected. However when they attended visual, we found no power increase of gamma activity recorded above auditory areas, while the frequency increase was the same as in the ''attend auditory'' condition. We conclude that the power modulation of gamma activity is modality specific and thus can be attributed to selective attention, whereas the frequency modulation of gamma activity shows no modality specificity, it is influenced by the arousal level.

Description:
According to the model hypothesized by Naatanen and Michie (Biol Psychol 1979; 8: 81-136), the generation of the mismatch negativity (MMN) requires a mismatch detection, taking place in temporal areas, followed by the activation of frontal generators, underlying attention switching toward the deviant stimulus. We aimed at verifying whether the activation of temporal and frontal regions is dependent on the amount of attentional resources allocable toward the deviant stimulus. We recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in nine healthy subjects while reading and during a demanding visual task (Multiple Features Target Cancellation, MFTC). Raw data were further evaluated by Brain Electrical Source Analysis (BESA). During the Reading condition, distraction toward the unattended auditory stimuli was reflected by the enhancement of the N1 response to frequent stimuli and by the elicitation of a P3a response to deviant ones. The MMN distribution was explained by bilateral temporal dipoles. During the MFTC condition, no P3a was detected, while source analysis showed the activation of a right frontal generator. Temporal dipoles showed no change between the two conditions: we thus conclude that the earlier mismatch detection is independent on the attentional load. By contrast, the activation of a right frontal subcomponent occurred only during the high-load task, independently on any actual attention shift reflected by the P3a component. We thus discuss the hypothesis whether the right frontal MMN generator, rather than subserving a simple attention switching toward the deviant stimulus, plays a role in modulating the auditory change detection system (''contrast enhancement'' model).
Book Description
In a nation that worships the automobile for the freedom, style, and status that it confers, the Indianapolis 500, run on or near Memorial Day eighty-seven times, is an annual rite of passage celebrating Americansâ love affair with speed.
Indy recounts the drivers (677 men and 3 women) who have gone to Indianapolis in the past ninety-five years to live their dreams, staking their lives on the outcome. It highlights the faces in the crowd: hardworking Americans, tinhorn celebrities, hookers, movie stars, gate-crashers, and five American presidents. Terry Reed focuses his narrative on the trackâs four quarter-mile-long turns, each the site of triumphs (including those of such multiple winners as Billy Vukovich, A. J. Foyt, and Helio Castroneves); grisly deaths (at least sixty-six, including three unrelated men of the same unusual last name who died in the same turn but in different decades); and bizarre heroics (like the sans souci French driver who downed champagne throughout the 1913 Indy 500 and still won). Reed also examines Indyâs confluence of racing and aeronautics (World War I flying ace Eddie Rickenbacker once owned the track) and the impact upon the event of such forces as segregation, gender politics, food, fads, publicity stunts, world-class partying, and tasteless pop culture.
Indy takes readers on an entertaining, full-throttle ride through the history of one of the worldâs most famous races and one of Americaâs most hallowed rituals. It is the definitive account of the crown jewel of American motorsports.
Customer Reviews:
Twenty-five more years of detail, racing events, and track insights .......2005-09-06
If Indy: The Race And Ritual Of The Indianapolis 500 sounds familiar, that's because this is the second updated edition of the most famous motorsport event of all time, adding twenty-five more years of detail, racing events, and track insights in an extensive updated revision. Others books have of course been written about the sport - many weightier tomes - but none with the lore, depth and detail of INDY: The Race And Ritual Of The Indianapolis 500.
Book missing key item--but a fun read for racing fan.......2005-07-09
The book misses one of the all-time worst incidents on Turn 4---the 1964 tragic accident involving Eddie Sachs and Dave MacDonald. Reed has done wonderful research....not a very good grammatical writer but well worth buying if you like the history of the Indy 500
A decent book.......2005-06-07
This book is okay. It wasn't what I thought it would be when I bought it. It focuses on the crashes on each part of the track, with the ritual of the Indy 500 talked about in a few pages. It did give a few tidbits of info on the race which I had never heard about.
Customer Reviews:
Best writing reference since Strunk & White!.......2001-06-02
I met this book volunteering in my daughter's 3rd grade class. I was so impressed with how this lays out clear examples of various writing topics that I bought a book for at home. This book will last her into high school and beyond. I highly recommend it.
