Book Description
Dr. Leman's ever popular book on birth order is ready for a new generation of readers. With insight and wit, Dr. Leman offers readers a fascinating and often funny look at how birth order affects personality, marriage and relationships, parenting style, career, and children. Whether at home or on the job, birth order powerfully influences the way people interact with others. This is a great book for anyone who wants to learn more about how they react to their world. Dr. Leman even shows readers how to overcome ingrained tendencies they never thought they'd be rid of, all by focusing on their birth order.

Shrug. You might like it........2007-10-11
This has some interesting information. I think a lot of the birth order theory is pretty accurate; it actually did make me feel better to know my perfectionism is partially due to my first-born status, and therefore not ENTIRELY my fault!
That said, the writing is tripe. The language is incredibly cheesy, VERY pop, and very simplistic. It's bland, and the author's sense of humor and cultural references are VERY grounded in his generation (which just makes him sound annoyingly out of touch). He also draws excessive attention to himself, his family, and his accomplishments, and he name-drops a LOT. Good lord, who on earth is impressed by that?
It's a fine book for the info, as long as you like pop psychology, pay as little attention to the writing as possible, and have a LOT of patience.
Self-Awareness through Birth Order.......2007-09-10
« The Birth Order Book: Why You Are the Way you Are » by Dr. Kevin Leman 1985 Baker Publishing Group USA
Dr. Leman is perhaps the foremost proponent of the importance of birth order in our psychological make-up. He has written numerous books on the subject, and has appeared on many American television and radio shows. He takes a humorous approach to his subject, and in order to follow him closely, it does help if you are conversant with favourite American television shows since the 1950's, and mainstream American slang. But his basic concepts are accessible even without these finer points. For each birth order position (firstborn, middle, youngest and only child) he gives a « Typical Traits: Strengths and Weaknesses » chart and questions you can ask yourself about your behaviour to help make your relationships with others go more smoothly. If you are on a path to self-awareness and have not yet explored issues relating to your birth order, this book by an experienced psychologist can shed more light on your inner workings.
There are, of course, many times when Dr. Leman mentions exceptions to his generalisations, and then casts about for explanations. It is at these times that I find the limitations of his Creationist beliefs most evident, because he is not open to including other influences, particularly astrology. I believe that a combination of birth order awareness and astrological information (together with basic psychological principles) gives a more complete explanation of our behavioural tendencies, which are of course modified by our real-life experiences.
« The Birth Order Book » is an easy read that can add to your understanding of your yourself and your relationships with others.

Very useful.......2007-07-15
If you live by the statement "Seek to understand before being understood" then you will find this book very useful. I have applied the information I learned in this book to my mediation practice, my marriage, my siblings, my teaching and in my current profession of life coach.
Just makes sense, will open your eyes........2007-05-27
I highly recommend this book for people who tend to overwork themselves, are perfectionists, and can't seem to find happiness in the work they do even though they enjoy doing it. This book will open your eyes to the world of birth order and why you are the way you are, why your husband or wife is the way they are, and the balance you need to develop in raising your children based on birth order dynamics. You will look at every person differently, and you will relate to them on a much more personal level because you understand where they are coming from. I highly recommend this book for everyone, especially Christians, and especially perfectionists, and I recommend that you look more into Dr. Leman's work. His website is http://www.drleman.com
Helpful Information.......2007-04-10
After having read this book in its several editions over several years, I have to say that birth order alone is not a sound basis upon which to judge in entirety a personality. While being a very important component, one must also take other things into account. Dr. Leman does not point out the other factors in a person's development: expectations of parents, temperament, experiences growing up, interactions with one's siblings for good or for bad, etc. And, since it is a book on birth order, he should not, as it would go off the subject. :-) However, parents, teachers and others should complete their library with other books which will give them a full spectrum of what can influence a child's personality. Another book that is important to read would be "The Temperament God Gave You" by Art and Laraine Bennett. This way you will get a more complete picture of the situation.

A childrens review.......2007-02-08
The main characters are Young-sup and Kee-sup.Young-sup and Kee-sup are two brothers who live in ancient Korea. This book takes place in Korea in 1473.The main idea of this book is a festival where you fight kites. I think this book would be good for a fourth and fifth grader. I found this book interesting. I would rate this book five stars. What I like about this book is the formula they use on their kite string to help cut other kites.
The Kite Fighters.......2006-05-19
Kite Fighters is a really good book if you like just to sit and read. Not a good book to read out loud. Short story about China and two brothers that make a kite for the king, and the king all right I said enough you will just have to read the book to find out.

The Kite Flyers
The aim of kite fighting is to either force your opponent out of the circle, to cut his string loose or to force his kite to touch the ground.
It was the last match of the games. Young Sup walked into the circle, holding the King's dragon kite. His opponent walked to his circle. They both bowed to each other and to the king. The gong sounded and the fight began. As soon as the kites were in the air Young Sup's opponent lost no time and started to attack his opponent's kite with full force.
Young Sup dodged and tried to get under his opponent's kite even though he didn't have the special twine. His opponent's kite stayed where it was and then Young Sup realised that he wasn't trying to cut his string but was trying to force his kite to the ground. Young Sup suddenly brought his kite string up under his opponent's string. He tried and failed. He counted how many times he tried to cut the string. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. Then a gust of wind came.
Young Sup was thrown off balance... and fell with a thud outside the circle! Just at the same time his opponent's string came loose from his kite. Immediately a guard holding a red flag stood it up on end. The match was over. But who had won?
Anagha's Book Review.......2005-01-20
The Kite Fighters, by Linda Sue Park, is a wonderful book. Linda has written this story really well. She really takes you into the story, and makes you feel like you are there. When one of the characters accidentally broke a pot, I felt like I could hear the sound of the pot breaking. Her way of writing is very interesting. She only uses a few words to describe what is happening in the story, but in those few words she tells you so much that you feel like you read a paragraph. Linda also uses many descriptive words. Here is a passage from the book that I think is very descriptive, "I was so angry that I felt like there was a thunderstorm in my head. There was nothing anyone could do to remove the flood of anger that was thundering in my head."
This book is about a young boy, Young-Sup, who lives in Korea. He is a master at kite flying. He knows every thing there is to know about kites. He wants to fly in the kite competition. According to tradition, though, the oldest son always represents the family. That means hat Kee-Sup, his older brother, will fly instead of him. Young-Sup gets very angry. What will he do about it? Who will fly in the kite competition? Read this book to find out.
This book is fantastic. It is one of the stories that you just can't put down until you are finished. OK, this is a great book, but if you are looking for lots of action, this is not the book for you. I still think it is the best. The main character is a lot like me. He sometimes feels that nobody likes him and I do to. What I really liked about the book is how the author describes the scenes.
This book fits into the realistic fiction genre. It talks about a young boy who lives in Korea. Many of the facts are true.
This book is for 9 year olds because the main character's feelings are like many 9 year olds feelings.

Too Stereotyped.......2005-09-14
I am a psychologist and bought all 3 books in the series when my son's wife gave birth to his 3rd child. I didn't preview it before I read these books to the oldest as well as to newly deemed "middle child." I was disapointed and a bit apologetic to their parents when we all read it together. These children knew the message(s) in the book were related to them. I felt that since they are so young, they were getting a message about how they were going to (or should) turn out. Also, there were references to Christmas and I felt this didn't leave room for people who celebrate other holidays than those. I thought the concept of the book was good. From the title, I was mainly interested in the message that the mother loves all three of her children, recognises differences, but loves them just the same. I wish the author would have just adhered to that theme and left the predictions about their personalities and behavior out of it. [...]

The book struck me as silly and it bored my 6-year old, who wouldn't sit through it. It is also overtly Christian, so if you don't want to send a message about Christian God, it's not appropriate. I returned it.

All parents of first borns should own this book. It is laugh out loud funny and brings tears of joy to your eyes. This book rang so true to our first born, even though he's of a different gender than the character in the book. I buy this for all my friends!

Good for older children older than five........2005-08-09
This book is very good to read to your firstborn. I purchased it as something special to read since baby sister came along. It is a little long winded for younger children. I have a four year old that is very interested in books and she was a little bored. I think the reading sections on each page are a too long for her. It is still a very good book. I look forward to sharing it with her more in the future.
Great gift for the new big sisters and brothers.......2005-08-02
I ordered all 3 of the books in this series as gifts to my children upon the arrival of our third child. My oldest is three and she loves for me to read this story to her and tell her about the events of her birth and life. It really helped her feel special in her place in our growing and changing family!

Middle Child Obstacles & Triumphs........2006-08-13
Each child is a unique individual in his own right, but let me tell you, birth order does matter -- a lot. The first child is the light in the parents' eyes and hearts. He is pampered, loved dearly, and protected from the harm others might inadverently cause to this special child. Every child is special not just those with disabilities. The middle child does okay until the youngest comes along, then is kinda left to defend for himself. He may become introverted and feel inferior and has to fight to prove his worth in other things such as sports. All of the attention is given to the youngest, and so the middle child is the so-called Wednesday's child.
I'll never forget this day in 1962. Zachary was born on this day; he was sensitive and easy to hurt. From his earliest years, he wrote stories and plays and enacted them with his GI Joes, Bat Monkey, and other toys as the family gathered to praise his efforts. He wrote and illustrated stories when he knew only phoenic spelling. Once in nursery school, he decided he had had enough and so his mother, working parttime for a local attorney, left her position to walk across the square to see what could be the matter. Zach was never a problem.
Sue Carr came to his rescue there with the preacher's wife who had no sensitivity and demanded they color within lines and not be individualistic. In the first grade, the roles were reversed when a mean-spirited teacher made Sue cry and he was her protector. Zach always felt second-best to his older brother (by a few months) and became a sport, playing little league, Pop Warner football -- as did Justin many years later. Right before he graduated from high school, Zach's picture was in the local paper blocking the player with the ball from the other team, and thus had his moment of fame.
And then, he was in college and worked hard at Belmont to prove what a good writer he was. Then he met Valerie and transferred to the town where she lived. They had a fancy wedding and things progressed as he earned his Master's Degree and his first job was in a prestigious university while she worked on her PhD in Political Science. After five years, they traveled to other colleges until Skylar, the youngest child of four, started school. Valerie took her first teaching job at a large university and prospered.
Life moved along, and the boys were known as creative and intelligent. Kaleena became an accomplished ballerina. Valerie had been a dance teacher for children before she went to college. Then, the tragic accident which took the oldest sons life. Zach was devasted this time for sure. Months have gone by with much emotional agony -- and things for Zach will never be the same. Happy Birthday, Zach. God is on your side. We must never give in to wishing things had been different as there is a time and place for everything. We don't know God's plan for us, but anything and every setback can be endured with honor and dignity. Life goes on, and we learn by the troubles and hurts along the way. It makes us more humble, like Chuck -- my, he must have been hurt a lot. Thank God, Zach who played the trombone in high school band like a pro, is not at all like his grandfather, Carl. Nor is he like his dad. Zach is an individual who will someday be a famous writer.
The story of a Southerner who failed in what he could have done, but the world does not end. Life is too short for stoping the train along life's journey. Follow it to the end and see what can be enjoyed along the way. It is a long, hard trail the middle child has to traverse, but in the end, he is the winner.

Cute and unique book for only children and parents.......2005-12-21
There are so few books that focus on only children FOR only children. This is a keeper. It's a very thoughtful story about an only bear cub and his parents and how it's okay to be an only child and that doesn't make the child weird. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because the author, while a guru on birth order, may have put too much emphasis on NOT having a sibling, versus the situation just being what it is. In other words, though my husband and I chose to have one child it doesn't mean that we think larger families aren't okay or that having siblings is a negative thing, and I think, VERY subtlely, that message was expressed through the conversations to the only cub.
However, I am very glad to have this book because while he hasn't asked yet, I know eventually there will come a time when my son may wonder why he doesn't have sisters and brothers. I'm hoping the book will be a useful tool in helping him realize that our situation isn't better or worse, it just IS. Only children get unfairly singled out enough, so the nuts and bolts of the story is a positive and much needed one!
