Brian Hall provides an overview of research during the half-century since Bones was first published, on major topics covered in the book - the origin of skeletal cells, cartilage morphogenesis, the formation of joints, the trajectory theory and bone structure, growth of cartilage and bone.

for those people who want to know more about the 3-4 defense, this is a great place to start. this book does a good job at explaining everything from coverages to different position requirements.

A Little Gem of a book.......2001-08-07

From a personal note this book has a lot of fond memories as it was one of the first football books I bought when I was in high school. We don't run the 3-4 but many of the fundamentals we teach were heavily influenced by Coach McDaniels and this book. This book has plenty of endorsements including Lou Holtz and Lavell Edwards, I don't know of any other 3-4 books so this at worst a great starting point. Hard to see how you could do any better. Thanks Coach McDaniels!

Coach McDaniels "Rocks with this one!" I grew up with Mike and I can tell you... There is no other person that thinks,loves,and adds to the game the way he does. Lots of detailed information.......2000-01-25

This book shows how to implement almost every phase of the Pro 3-4 into your existing defense. Topics include: Strategic Adjustments; Defensive Stance, Alignment, Responsibilities, and Techniques for all defensive positions; Backfield Coverages; Blitz Packages; Defending Against Specific Offenses; and Developing a Defensive Game Plan. Lots of diagrams. Excellent book for coaches at any level.

Good as Any!!!.......2007-03-16

As a high school football coach. I am given a expense account and am able to purchase a few books every year. I would like to say that this book is as good as any I have read on the subject. The author does an excellent job of explaining the 4-3 position by position. It also show different defensive looks. This is a good book for a peewee or high school coach.

second best book.......2006-02-27

This is the second best book i have found on coaching the 4-3. It would have been better if they would have given a brief description of each term in the glossarys preceding each chapter. This would let you translat your own terminolgy to the book.

Good Book for the 4-3 Defensive System.......2006-03-23

Overall this is a very good treatment of the basic 4-3 defense. It is definitely geared to high school or above but could be used by the lower level coach if the material was simplified. We are planning on switching to the 4-3 from a 5-2 at our high school and this book will be extensively used for the playbook.

Good but not great.......2003-12-16

First of all this book does a solid job showing the basics of installing the 4-3 front and the slide front which I like more. It also shows some of the very basics of installing the 4-6 Bear.

A couple of the things that I found lacking in the book were in the terminology department and that there were diagrams mislabeled and some of the drills that they suggest in the back were not described. I think it worked out to half with descriptions and half without.

The major problem that I ran into was the terminology of the defensive coverages. What they term a Cover 4 is actually a Cover 2 Lock or Man where you play man coverage underneath the two deep safeties. And some of the coverage adjustments seemed a little exotic for the twins and trips. Either you're a base man coverage team or you're a zone coverage team, and you shouldn't change what you do best just because the other team does something unexpected.

These little gripes of mine don't detract from the overall good product put out. You will always run into terminology difference in football, and this is a solid book and starts with solid foundations and builds on them throughout. Not highly recommended, but still a good buy.

Awesome lay out in implementing the 4-3.......2000-04-26

I have coached at the pee-wee(13-16 yrs) and at the high school level and have had very good success with the 4-4 and the 5-3. Recently I started coaching at the "semi-pro" level where we only practice twice a week. This book was awesome in assisting me to implement this defense. It's easy to follow but very in-depth. A must have for any one implementing a 4-3 def. program and a terrific guide and reference for a 4-3 already in place. Coach D.

Great at explaining the fundamentals of the 4-3.......1999-08-07

The strength of this book is its specificity toward the fundamentals required of each position in the 4-3 defense the way they ran it a Clovis High. There is not alot of variations given however, so if you want to show multiple fronts you may want to get another book in addition to this one.

I really like the "Coaching by the Experts" Series and this is my favorite so far. After two years of running an 8 man front, cover 3 defense we switched to the 4-3 because of its simplicity and flexibility. This book details how many different directions your 4-3 can go. From names like Jackie Sherill and George Perles to Dave Wannstedt. Though only one chapter was used to discuss any in-depth coverage philosophies, this is another excellent resource book showing how many different ways the 4-3 can be played.

Not for the Business Analyst - Strictly for the Developer.......2007-03-17

This book was so disappointing and all over the place. It is clearly written for those that are strictly into programming and coding and have prior knowledge and understanding of object modeling. Even the diagramming was not for the beginner analyst. It's written more in theory than practical information even to get you started in defining UML and what it really is.

It would have been much more informative if author would have stated up front that you have to have basic knowledge of Object Modeling and all the terminology that is defined. Next, define UML as a set of DIAGRAMS. Nothing more and nothing less! Spend the time on the details of the diagrams and how to read them versus jumping all over the place talking in theory about sketching versus blueprinting, etc. Every area seems to be lacking details in terms of what it means in layman's terms. For example, with sequence diagrams, what does it mean to look at the behavior of several objects within a single use case? Don't go off talking about the next diagram and never addressing the sequence diagrams and objects in a Use case. Provide a Use Case and a Sequence Diagram and then explain it in terms of behavior and objects. A good analyst, whether system and/or business, thinks in terms of user functions, actions and what is expected of the system.

The books also defined terms using the term which really made it confusing. I never did figure out how to define a meta-model or how it even looks.

Is UML really a programming language starting with the diagramming approach? Should the developer be able to develop activity diagrams from use cases written by the analyst? Should be analyst be looking to develop all the diagrams and have the knowledge of Object Modeling which is really UML? A lot of questions that couldn't be addressed with this book.

Definitely not worth the price!

This book provides some brief but good background to set the context then proceeds to succinctly communicate those aspects of UML one really needs to know.
