Book Description
She's not just an observer. She's an active participant who actually talks to the animals -- and understands what they are saying.
Since the dawn of time, animals have communicated with one another. Now a remarkable woman hears their language and communicates directly with them. In this heartwarming account, you'll learn how Nicci Mackay transforms the lives of owner and animal. There's Aristotle, the naughty stallion with a heart of gold; Hector, the abused horse who learns to trust again; Gnasher, the balky herd-dog who makes a remarkable comeback; and Charlie, the forlorn spaniel who convinces Nicci that he doesn't need -- and will not tolerate -- a leg amputation.
Nicci Mackay is an enchanting storyteller who recounts a miraculous life dedicated to animals. In her years spent as a groom and jockey, she "spoke" in secret. Now she interprets everywhere on behalf of horses, as well as other animals. From horses to hounds, sheep to sheepdogs, these four-legged friends share the inability to speak to humans. But as the animals' translator, Mackay is second to none in making their voices heard.

Something a little different, and surprisingly convincing!.......2004-07-18
I received this book as a gift years ago, and until now it's just been sitting by the wayside. I'm always skeptical of people who call themselves "horse whisperers" - while I'm willing to believe there are levels of communication that most of us do not yet understand, it takes quite a bit to convince me that someone who claims to have any sort of telepathic abilities is actually the real deal. Not only that, but the term "horse whisperer" is incredibly hackneyed by now. Ever since the movie of the same title came out, the name has been slapped on just about every moderately successful trainer out there, even though their methods vary widely and don't actually involve any "whispering." However, when I finally gave the book a chance, I was very surprised. The first two chapters alone had me convinced that Nicci Mackay is something genuinely different.
The book is more like a memoir of her experiences communicating with horses (and other animals), and not actually a full biography. She takes up the story in her adult life, revealing the circumstances under which she first "came out of the closet" about her abilities. Believing most people would think her a quack if she ever claimed she could speak with horses, Mackay kept quiet about it for years. She only spoke out publicly when a close friend adamantly insisted that she do so, for the benefit of a particular horse. When she received a surprisingly favorable reaction, the author began offering her services professionally, helping people better communicate with and understand their beloved animals. And though horses are her most common subject, being her favorite animal and the one with which she first recognized her abilities, she has also successfully worked with dogs, sheep, cows, and even birds. The bulk of the book shares with us a series of the author's most interesting and touching cases.
Part of what makes Mackay's book so convincing is her down-to-earth nature. She does not come across as pretentious is any way. In fact, she freely admits to not fully understanding her abilities herself, and occasionally suffers doubts about the extent to which any as-yet-untried application will be successful. She never lords her abilities over anyone else, doesn't believe herself to be superior to other horse owners because of her communication skills, and nowhere does she attempt to argue the reader into believing everything she has to say. Rather, she lets the case examples speak for themselves. There is also an abundance of self-deprecating humor, as she shares some of her more comical and occasionally downright hilarious experiences. To me, Mackay's book reads a bit like something a telepathic James Herriot would have written.
Amazing as it may be, Nicci Mackay actually seems to be the real thing. Her book is utterly convincing and a joy to read. Mackay is also an excellent writer, and the text is vivid and captivating. Her style is very friendly and open. I wouldn't blame anyone for being initially skeptical - after all, I set the book aside for quite some time for this very reason - but for anyone with an interest in horses to entirely bypass this book would be a great loss. I'd urge any horse lover to give this one a chance, as it will broaden your horizons and is definitely well worth the read.
To believe or not to believe?.......2002-04-11
Okay, I'm a skeptic--or at least was. I bought this book to prove to myself that communicating with animals is not real. But before I reached halfway, I was already a believer. It's real, and it's strange. Nicci Mackay actually speaks her thoughts to animals, asking them questions about their behavior, feelings, etc, and receives answers from them. She's not a horse whisperer like Monty Roberts. This woman can carry on a conversation with any horse (although she can't always persuade them to do things for her!)
Nicci's writing is beautiful and captivating. Her book is nicely put together chronologically (unlike some autobiographies which keep jumping back and forth). Her stories can be dreadfully depressing or hilariously funny. Some of her experiences are downright eccentric, though not lacking charm. She has a brilliant sense of humor that caught me off guard in situations where I should have contained my laughter.
To sum things up, this book is a gem and I will read it many more times. I wholeheartedly urge you to pick a copy for yourself--regardless of whether you are a believer or not. Niccy Mackay, if you read this, please drop me a line as I would like you to talk to my horse.
Reader, what are you still doing reading this review? Buy the book!
Can you say "New Agey?".......2001-04-21
I do believe that people form strong spiritual bonds with each other and animals too. I also believe we can sense things intuitvely when we're close to someone. HOWEVER, this book is a little wacho and new agey. You know the drill. . . 'We are one with nature" type book. No thanks!!!
Very enjoyable reading! Well written and thought provoking.......2000-04-23
In this book Nicci Mackay shares her experience of being able to communicate telepathically with primarily horses, but also a few dogs, goats and birds. It starts when she first shares her ability with some fellow horsemen, and then progresses as she gets more and more well known and works with many different animals. Very enjoyable, she doesn't try to "push" her views on the reader to hard. She just shares her experiences. This book is slightly different then The Man Who Listens to Horses by Monty Roberts. Mackay was very much into "psychic" communication with the horses, while Roberts was more into the body language of the horses. I don't doubt that they both incorporated both of these methods, to some degree or other. Personally, I'm still unsure about "psychic communication with animals" but I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I also recomend Conversations with Animals by Lydia Hiby.

Customer Reviews:
Research and experience talks in this book.......2007-10-03
I found myself being the guy doing always the same boring and not always so useful old-school stretching routines. This book had enough science and experience in its background, so it was a thrust-worthy starting point to read. The presentation covers in an understandable way stretching principles, self-evaluation, sport-specific needs and different techniques. And of course, how to customize your own program. As a jumper (high, triple) I have got a lot of new tips in adding flexibility in my problematic areas like low-back and hips. The series of photos are so clear that it is easy to do the routines as they should be done.
A new way of thinking about stretching.......2007-07-21
Over the years it has become a standard mantra that people should "stretch" to help performance and prevent injuries. On the other hand, recent research has cast doubts on the usefulness of "stretching."
This book provides a good resolution to the stretching dilemma. It recasts "stretching" as a series of fluid, wave-like activities for improving mobility opposing the old "stretch and hold" protocol that so many of us have struggled with for years. The movements are performed in synchronization with breathing and at varying tempo for different purposes.
One interesting aspect of this approach is that it takes a big step toward bridging the fluid, rhythmic emphasis of traditional Eastern practices like Tai Chi and Yoga with the Western functional methods.
The biggest weakness of this book from my perspective was that while it emphasizes the importance of sequence, it did not really give enough detailed examples to help me sequence my own flexibility routines, I found myself guessing in various places. The book suggests working from the core outward but does not indicate how to relate each movement to how far it is from the core, and so on. As a result, I have enough information from this book to know how to do the movements and roughly how to structure my stretching, but it leaves me having to do a lot of experimentation on my own.
Still, the approach in this book is heads and shoulders above the previous generation of "stretch and hold" poses, and I highly recommend it for all athletes and martial artists.
Best Stretching Resource I've Encountered.......2007-04-26
This book provides:
1. A systematic approach for identifying your movement restrictions and designing a program to resolve them
2. Clear instruction on effective stretching, with a focus on developing the right combination of mobility and stability
3. Specific guidelines for incorporating soft tissue work with a therapy ball into your exercise program
My personal experience applying just the stretching guidelines has been the following:
1. My hips have opened quite a bit. I can comfortably drop into a deep squat.
2. Foot pain I have had for almost a year is quickly going away
3. A shoulder problem I went to physical therapy for but never quite finished fixing is rapidly improving
I've got the recommended equipment for the trigger point therapy on the way (a $10 Footsie roller and a $15 Fitball). If it does as much for me as the stretching has, I'm going to be a very happy person.
On a professional basis, I've been certified by the ACSM as a Health / Fitness Instructor since 2002. I was certified by ACE as a Personal Trainer in 2000. I've read a number of other stretching books and watched several DVDs. This book is the clearest out of any of them, and is one of the few to recognize being overly flexible is just as bad as not being flexible enough. It's also one of the few to address the concept of promoting soft tissue quality to reduce risk of injury.
Considering the price relative to other fitness products on the market, everyone should own a copy and apply the guidelines. Diligent attention to a sound program of mobility work will have more immediate impact on quality of life and ease of movement than just about any other form of exercise.

Book Description
A comprehensive, communicative, and practical guide to using Japanese, Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary is an invaluable tool for anyone with an interest in the Japanese language. It has been edited with the needs of English-speaking users in mind, whether students, teachers, business
people, or casual linguists, and special care has been taken at each stage of its compilation including the selection of entry words and their equivalents, the wording of the detailed explanations of Japanese words, the choice of example sentences, and even its functional page design to maximize its
usefulness.
What is furigana and why is it so important?
Furigana refers to the small kana that are printed above or alongside kanji to show their pronunciation. With furigana superscripts, the beginner who is familiar with hiragana and katakana is able to read even the most difficult and obscure kanji at a glance. Other dictionaries either provide little
or no guide to kanji readings or romanize some or all of the Japanese words and sentences. In the past, romanized dictionaries were of some value to students using textbooks that contained no Japanese script. Now, however, an increasing number of influential curricula around the world are based on a
rationale and methodology that demands the introduction of hiragana and katakana from the earliest stages. Learners and their teachers using such curricula will inevitably feel more comfortable with a dictionary such as Kodansha s Furigana Japanese Dictionary, one that shows the pronunciation of
kanji with a familiar and authentic kana script.
Combining Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary (1995) and Kodansha's Furigana English-Japanese Dictionary (1996) in one portable. affordable, and user-friendly volume, this dictionary has the following unique features:
o A basic vocabulary of 30,000 entries covers the most frequently used English and Japanese words
o Special treatment has been given to hundreds of words, names, and phrases of special relevance to English-speaking students of Japanese
o Semantic and usage differences between Japanese words and expressions are explained in clear English
o Thousands of example sentences and phrases illustrate how Japanese words are used in context
o Special information is provided on verb conjugations, formality, and other aspects of Japanese grammar and usage
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Home Dictionary.......2007-10-05
This neat, well-organized Japanese-English/English-Japanese dictionary is the one I've used in many of my Japanese classes. It's Japanese entries are furigana (kana-only) and not romaji (Latin characters) so users should be familiar with Japanese alphabetical order when looking up the meaning of a Japanese word. This is too nice of a book to tote to class or on a plane, but it is very nice for home use. The usage explanations along with each word entry make this dictionary the best J-E/E-J out there. These explanations aid in understanding Japanese idomatic expressions and assure correct word choice. I think this dictionary is easier to use than buying the two seperate J-E and E-J dicctionaries from Kodansha. I wish Kodansha would print a larger version that's more of a traditional "dictionary size."
good..........2007-10-01
still learning katanakana, so it's kinda hard to read...
You need to be able to read katakana and hirigana at the least... It has some kanji, but it has the pronunciation in hirigana or katakana above it... Pretty good dictionary, it's kinda smaller than I thought it would be though, so it's not really a full of all the words in our language...
This is really helping me a lot!.......2007-09-20
I'm a very beginning, self-taught learner of Japanese, and I bought this furigana dictionary in order to build vocabulary and practice reading by translating simple children's books. It has proven to be extremely helpful, even though there are a few words I haven't been able to find. Just using it really reinforces my hiragana and katakana skills. The sample sentences are extremely helpful in both knowing how to use various words correctly and in translating, especially when there are many meanings for homonyms.
No, it's not a pocket dictionary and the furigana is very tiny so this isn't the book you want to take on a tour, but for a beginning or intermediate student, it's extremely valuable.
Have a Magnifying Glass Handy?.......2007-09-03
I found the font of the furigana characters to be tiny. That's about the only flaw I find with this volume. Only in bright sunlight can I see them clearly.
a must for every student of japanese.......2007-06-27
It's a definitely good book. There're all the words one needs for the casual conversation, and a lot of examples.

Use in tandem with other Nihongo references.......2007-05-07
I've had a lot of fun with this book. It's definietly less "gaijin" beginner than other dictionaries I have come across. I would've been happier with much more crammed into this, but that's what other reference books are for.
Useful for the beginner.......2006-11-10
In my opinion this is a great book for a beginner.
There is not a single line in romaji, so you have to know kana; I guess this excludes real beginners, say those living the first month of their Japanese learning experience. After that you will find this book an amazing source of information. Each entry carries furigana both in the search key and in the following examples. Said examples are by far the most precious part of this dictionary, as for most words there are at least a couple of useful expressions given as an usage example, while more complex or fundamental words have plenty of additional examples.
Very sporadically I found that some word I have in my electronic dictionary is missing, so I think that perhaps more advanced learners will find the vocabulary a bit limited, and this is the reason I think this is a perfect dictionary to start with. Again, there is only the Japanese-to-English part, so this is not the dictionary you need if you want to write something on you own.
midway.......2006-04-19
past beginner stage quite intermediate level.Maybe a little bit downside from the knowledge and information offered by Kenkyusha which is hard to find. I look forward to the day on which Kodansha Communicative Dictionary will be published.
The perfect Japanese-English dictionary!.......2006-03-09
If you're looking for a Japanese-English dictionary that doesn't have any romaji and uses furigana, this is your dictionary. It has about 14,000 common English words and has thousands of sentence examples (which is my favorite part of this dictionary).
Please remember though that this dictionary is ONLY Japanese-English and does not have English-Japanese. If you need an English-Japanese dictionary, then this dictionary is not for you.
Useless for anybody past "beginner" stage.......2006-01-22
I have been learning Japanese for a number of years, and this is the second Japanese/English dictionary I had bought. It worked fine at the beginning, but as I got into reading more complicated texts, the faults became more and more visible.
There is just not enough vocabulary in this book. At times I would have to switch back and forth between the two dictionaries I owned, hoping one of them would carry the word I was looking for. Kodansha's dictionary is a huge disappointment; the quality of it otherwise is very nice. The cover is gorgeous and the semi-hard cover makes it durable yet still flexible. The entries that ARE in the dictionary come with a number of examples on how to use the words, and that is always helpful when attempting to write something. However, as I use the dictionary to look up words I don't know yet, it becomes ultimately useless.
Book Description
Browsing through the pages of Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary, you will notice that something is different: none of the Japanese entry words appearing in this book have been romanized. Some will be surprised by this feature, especially in that the book is seen as suitable for even absolute beginners. Others (particularly the Japanese-language instructors who pointed out the need for such a publication) will be delighted to find that a full-fledged furigana Japanese-English dictionary is finally available.
What is furigana and why is it so important?
Furigana refers to the small kana that are printed above or alongside kanji to show the pronunciation of the Chinese character. With furigana superscripts, the beginner who is familiar with hiragana and katakana is able to read even the most difficult and obscure kanji at a glance. Other publications either provide little or no guide to kanji readings or romanize some or all of the Japanese words and sentences. Previously, romanized Japanese dictionaries were of some value to students using textbooks that contained no Japanese script. Recently, however, an increasing number of influential curricula around the world are based on a rationale and methodology that demands the introduction of hiragana and katakana from the earliest stages. Learners and their teachers studying under such curricula will inevitably feel more comfortable with a dictionary such as Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary, one that shows the pronunciation of kanji with familiar and authentic kana script.
But it does not end there. The comprehensive 16,000-word basic vocabulary comprises a generous and balanced selection of native Japanese words, kanji compounds, and foreign loan words. Precise and informative definitions, written specifically for English speakers, offer expert guidance on points of grammar, meaning, style, orthography, pronunciation, and punctuation. Concise and insightful explanations clarify even the most troublesome cultural terms. In addition there are 50,000 sample sentences that provide a context-based understanding of how words are linked together to form authentic and natural Japanese sentences.
Features that help expand word power and increase vocabulary skills have also been included in Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary. Common collocations, derivatives, and compounds show how word-parts fit and work together. Comprehensive cross-referencing makes the learner aware of common synonyms and antonyms, clarifying both meaning and usage. Finally, three appendices explain in detail such complicated areas as conjugating verbs and adjectives, counting, and articulating foreign place names in Japanese.
All of this and more in a portable format and at an affordable price. Kodansha's Furigana Japanese-English Dictionary is the essential dictionary for all students of Japanese.

Set me on the path to fluency.......2007-06-16
Wow, I can't believe I forgot about this! When I started learning Japanese, using this dictionary set the right foundation - don't be intimidated by Kanji and avoid using Roomaji. 10 years later (3 spent living and working in Japan), I speak and read fluently and love communicating in Japanese. I've long since lost the dictionary, but I remember that the example sentences were useful for my homework and realistic for everyday use. As soon as I moved to Japan, I dropped this for an electronic dictionary, but during my first 5 years of study, this and a Kanji dictionary were sufficient. I remember that this dictionary kept me motivated.
I never bought the E-J version because it was too pricey to buy both, but this is the one you really need. I would also consider pairing this with an E-J from a different brand. Different publishers choose different terms, and sometimes you need options!
I would discourage buying the J-E & E-J 2-in-1 book only because it's heavy and thick. I think that would discourage you from really using it to the fullest.
okinawa.......2006-04-19
Basic but comprehensive, nearly every word is explained in sample sentences.I think these sentences may be useful in actual situations. I recommend Kodansha Dictionaries and Kenkyusha Japanese Learner's Dictionary.
good, but basic.......2003-03-08
well organized and pretty good definitions, but limited. Even just watching japanese news/tv, you quickly find yourself outpacing this dictionary.
sayonarajado.......2002-04-16
This dictionary has the kind of format I like best. There are plenty of example sentences and the font is clear and doesn't strain the eyes as some dictionaries of Asian languages tend to.
Furthermore, since the reader has no other option but to look up the English translation of Japanese words in Furiganga, there is constant Kana practice inherent in the design of the book. From an educator's standpoint, that is a very positive reinforcement tool for first and second year students who might still have trouble with Kana.
Nevertheess, I only wish this dictionary were more comprehensive for advanced students of the language.
Tries Hard, but not at all Comprehensive.......2001-03-29
I studied Japanese in college and recently moved to Tokyo to live and work. My Japanese is at an intermediate/advanced level and I was looking for a Japanese dictionary to use at work. I really loved Kodansha's English-Japanese dictionary so I thought that the Japanese-English dictionary would be just as good. I was very wrong. I just read a newspaper article about banks and not ONE word I looked up was in the dictionary. My co-worker lent me her Kenkyusha's New Collegiate Japanese-English Dictionary ... and every word was in it. Any one need a paperweight?
