Brilliant!.......2000-10-11
This book is enlightening. It retells old tales with beautiful photos. Animals and nature have center stage in the attempts to teach us, to show us, what is important in life. I volunteer at a Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Illinois and can speak personally of witnessing the intelligence, the playfulness, the connectedness that exists in all creatures. We should cherish the earth, the animals, the plants, they can survive without us, but we wouldn't make it without them.
Extraordinary photography! Witty narration!.......1999-03-08
All creation is connected. This is the underlying theme of "Shared Spirits" as it beautifully depicts Native American thoughts on twelve different species through extraordinary photographs and witty narration. "Considering the struggles we are now having with our own environment, perhaps it is time to listen to some old teachers - the ones who have been here for eons. Native People aren't the original teachers. They simply listened to the rest of the Earth with an open heart, giving voice to bear, eagle, raven and stone, and carried the water through the desert, to us (from the Introduction of Shared Spirits)." Perhaps through works such as this, all creation can learn to live harmoniously together and man can begin to realize that we have been entrusted to be caretakers of this beautiful planet and all of the creation it houses.

Incredibly insightful!.......2007-10-08
I discovered the "Keepers" series two years ago. At first I was unsure of the format, and it took me a while to appreciate all the activities, but now they are the foundation in my homeschool curriculum. The stories and activities are suitable for a wide range of ages so that they may be used for years with the same child. There is so much depth and insight to all of the Keepers books that it is a compliment to any style of homeschool. For naturalists, home schoolers, un-schoolers, classical educators or public schools - these books are absolutely a must for every child living in North America! I can't say enough about these books.
Keepers Series.......2000-10-24
Joseph Bruchac is a natural stort teller. This whole series is wonderful. I have used these books with children from the ages of four through fourteen. But of all of them the cassette of The Keepers of the Animals is my favorite and the only one that I cannot keep because I am continually giving it away. It is not only the quality of Bruchac's voice but also the cadence that he brings to the telling that adds a resonance, a native rhthym to the stories, that enhances understanding. This is the way that these stories should be told and should be heard. Native American culture has a rich oral tradition and the sounds, the rhthyms of the language are an important part of the telling of a story. We may not have the sounds of the language per se except in the names but we can hear a little of the native cadence in Bruchac's delivery. These are wonderful tapes for small children and again this is my very favorite.
Bringing Native Stories to Life.......2000-07-20
I've been lucky enough to see Michael Caduto perform theseNative stories in person. He brings Native beliefs to life inunexpected and delightful ways. The stories he and Josheph Bruchac have put together here do the same thing. They give young readers a chance to explore Native cultures while they learn and enjoy the stories! In addition to Native tales, this book provides factual information and activities on nature and animals. It's an outstanding resource for teachers, parents, and kids of all ages.

You will believe!.......2007-06-28
Wonderful book full of beautiful, mystical, magical photographs. Robert Vavra is one of the best in the business!
You will be a child again.......2007-06-22
Remember when you believed in unicorns? This book is filled with such beautiful photography that you will forget you were told not to believe.
How could I rate Vavra any less??.......2007-01-19
I have always appreciated Robert Vavra from the time I was first introduced to his art. But this particular book I have longed for about 23 years.
Beautiful, fanciful, and "fact"-filled book about a mythical noble creature that is loved so much, that few would dispute his existence.
Photos, illustrations and notes on each well-known type of unicorn is unsurpassed!
Reality of the Unicorn.......2002-11-16
This gorgeous book is one of the finest unicorn books I own. It has great pictures and lots of unicorn details and a unicorn searching guide. It is worth buying if you like unicorns or photography. It is worth getting Unicorn of Kilimanjaro or the Calendar if you can find them as well. It is on my list of favorite all time books, and i see a lot of them as i work at a bookstore. By this if you or someone you love likes unicorns and give the gift of magic.
Beautiful, enchanting, full of dreams.......2002-06-20
I first encountered this book when I was very young. I asked my local library to buy it and they did; and I kept checking it out again and again. Owning this book now is like looking back into my own childhood, at the dreams and the wonder I had for the world. It's beautiful pictures and startling art has never faded for me over time.

Book Description
In The Voice of the Coyote, J. Frank Dobie melds natural history with tales and lore in articulating the complex and often contentious relationship between coyotes and humans. Based on his own life experiences in Texas and twenty-five years of research, Dobie forges a sympathetic and nuanced picture of the coyote prefiguring later environmental and conservation movements. He recognizes the impact of human action on the coyote while also examining the prominent role of the coyote in the myths and legends of the West.

You'll love Coyotes after reading this book........2004-09-29
I really loved this book. I bought it because I was doing research on Coyotes for a novel I was writing, and I thought I would skim this, but I read it word for word instead. Perhaps because I already had an interest in coyotes, but I came home every night looking forward to reading more. If you love animals, you'll love this book. Well written, easy to ready, interesting stories, etc.

Wolves, extinct in many regions and necessarily furtive, are a rare sight in the wild. Anyone curious about the elusive Canis lupus might do well to start their search from an armchair, with this wide-ranging coffee table book as their guide. Originally published by the Nature Company in 1993, this reissued "celebration" is in fact an enormous collage of stories, legends, poetry, paintings, and photos relating to this largest member of the canine family. Short chapters such as "On the Hunt," "Wolves at Play," and "The Wolf Way of Birth," offer insight into the lives of wolves, with excerpts from the work of notable writers such as Farley Mowat, Lois Crisler, Barry Lopez and Edward Hoagland. The book also features a remarkable collection of photographs, including work by Jim Brandenburg--one of the world's foremost wolf photographers, and a first look at Mattias Klum's photos of wolves in his native Sweden.
Emphasizing the breadth rather than depth of wolf studies, Wolf provides a wide-ranging, accessible look at this most admired, and vilified, of carnivores. --Maria Dolan

"...clearly aims to...endow wolves with some of the majesty they deserve. Plentiful color photographs are interspersed among the essays, poems and more than a few Native American myths."--Publisher's Weekly. "...a tribute to the enduring mystique of the wolf..."--American Bookseller. "...will inform, inspire, and enthrall readers of all ages."--Book Links. "...beautiful and powerful...superlative array of images....The best choice for young adults...a highly recommended purchase."--Voya.

Quite a Nice Book!.......2002-10-09
It doesn't delve into the world of the wolf, presenting many facts and details. Instead, it dabbles in everything wolf-related. There are photos, artworks, and exerpts from many different places. It's enjoyable to read and look through. Because I'm an avid fan of wolves, there was nothing really new for me in it. However, people who are intrigued by wolves, but don't know much about these creatures, will probably find this book a wonderful way to start.
A superbly written, illustrated celebration of the wolf........2000-09-05
This coffee table exploration of the wolf explains why we are drawn to the wolf, providing scientific and social analysis which celebrates the wolf in word and image. Wolf is more than just a coffee table set of photos however - plenty of text explains their nature and natural history, making it suitable for library collections as well as coffee tables.
Beautiful photography enhances the aura & mystery of wolves........1998-12-07
The glorious photography and illustrations of this book enhance the aura and mystery of the wolf in its graceful and expressive beauty. The text includes an accurate description of the folklore and myths surrounding wolves, as well as firsthand reports from people who study the wolf in a natural habitat. The book is full of facts and interesting trivia written to the audience who loves the wolf as well as to the audience that perhaps fears the wolf. The world of the wolf, the way of the wolf, and the wolf of dreams and nightmares are all explored in wonderful narrative. There is a resource section in the back of the book listing organizations that work for the wolf. If you love the wolf or fear the wolf, you'll enjoy having this book.
Book Description
The U.S. Government and its Army killed millions of buffalo as part of an all-out war against the Native Americans in the nineteenth century. The plains Indians, who relied on the buffalo as a source of food and spiritual power, weakened and succumbed to the aggressors as the buffalo quickly disappeared from the prairies. "Buffalo Nation" tells the story of this brutal war, and details the amazing comeback of the buffalo. The number of bison in the U.S. plummeted from more than thirty million in the early 1800s to fewer than 500 at the turn of the century. There are now more than 250,000 bison on ranches and sanctuaries across the nation. Valerius Geist also examines the natural history of the buffalo—underscoring its importance in North America in this enlightening exploration that will appeal to history buffs, conservationists, wildlife enthusiasts, and those concerned with Native American issues. The book features writings by "Buffalo Bill" Cody, Mari Sandoz, George Catlin, Black Elk, Lewis and Clark, General George Custer, Chief Plenty-coups, John James Audubon, Daniel Boone, Francis Parkman, and more. Illustrations include those by Charles M. Russell, Albert Bierstadt, George Catlin, and various Native American artists, along with more than 80 historical and contemporary photographs.
Book Description
Does a beloved institution need its own myths to survive? Can conservationists avoid turning their heroes into legends? Should they try? Yellowstone National Park, a global icon of conservation and natural beauty, was born at the most improbable of times: the American Gilded Age, when altruism seemed extinct and society’s vision seemed focused on only greed and growth. Perhaps that is why the park’s “creation myth” portrayed a few saintlike pioneer conservationists laboring to set aside this unique wilderness against all odds. In fact, the establishment of Yellowstone was the result of complex social, scientific, economic, and aesthetic forces. Its creators were not saints but mortal humans with the full range of ideals and impulses known to the species. Authors Paul Schullery and Lee Whittlesey, both longtime students of Yellowstone’s complex history, present the first full account of how the fairy tale origins of the park found universal public acceptance and the long, painful process by which the myth was reconsidered and replaced with a more realistic and ultimately more satisfying story.
In this evocative exploration of Yellowstone’s creation myth, the authors trace the evolution of the legend, its rise to incontrovertible truth, and its revelation as a mysterious and troubling episode that remains part folklore, part wish, and part history. This study demonstrates the passions stirred by any challenge to cherished national memories, just as it honors the ideals and dreams represented by our national myths.
Customer Reviews:
A very fine work of scholarship.......2005-01-12
Schullery and Whittlesey have performed a great service for all lovers of Yellowstone Park and its history. This is excellent scholarship. It is not, however, the "first full account" of this story. Chris Magoc's Yellowstone: The Creation and Selling of an American Landscape, 1870-1903 (University of New Mexico Press and MOntana Historical Society, 1999), is equally fine and indeed goes further and deeper in its analysis of the cultural and historical significance of this chapter of the park's history.
A work of impressive scholarship.......2003-12-08
The collaborative effort of Paul Schullery (Professor of History, Montana State University) and Lee Whittlesey (Park Historian, National Park Service, Yellowstone National Park), Myth And History In The Creation Of Yellowstone National Park presents the complex and fascinating history behind the creation of the Yellowstone National Park. This unprecedented establishment came to be during the American Gilded Age, a time when corporate greed ran rampant and political altruism seemed almost extinct. Myths about the inception of Yellowstone National Park have persevered and found an enduring public acceptance, but the true story of the individuals behind the park's creation is actually one of flawed human beings with their own competing motives, and not necessarily pure-hearted conservational philosophies. Myth And History In The Creation Of Yellowstone National Park is a work of impressive scholarship and very highly recommended for university and community library American History collections.

Book Description
A unique study of the Bible as natural historyfrom the Garden of Eden to Noah's Ark, Jonah and the Whale to the Plagues of Egypt.
Did the whale swallow Jonah, or could the culprit have been a great white shark? What kind of animals were Leviathan and Behemoth? What sort of lions confronted Daniel in the Den, and from where did they originate? Did the great plagues of Egypt really happen? Why are animals classified as "clean" and "unclean?" And why are mythical beastslike unicorns, satyrs, and cocatricesmentioned in the Bible?
Beasts of the Field answers all these questions, and many more, about the birds, bees, and beasts that inhabit the extraordinarily varied landscape of the Levant. An award-winning wildlife filmmaker and biologist, Michael Bright is a senior producer with the BBC's world-renowned Natural History Unit.
