About the Book--A Real Tale of the Old West
The secret lives of Bill and Libby Thompson have been hidden away for more than 100 years. The past was hidden so well that even their descendants were unaware. However, Bill and Libby have now been "found out." But knowing about the family history and reporting it are two separate issues. One does not normally air the family's "dirty laundry" in public. As a result, there was some discussion amongst aunts, uncles, and cousins as to whether this story ought to be made public. That is to say, did the family have an obligation to protect the story that Libby tried so hard to keep secret. A Must Read for Western Enthusiasts
Saddle the Wild Wind: The Saga of Squirrel Tooth Alice and Texas Billy Thompson--is a story of the Old West. It should appeal to fans of Mari Sandoz (The Cattlemen), Anne Butler (Daughters of Joy, Sisters of Misery), Dale Schoenberger (The Gunfighters), and Dee Brown (Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee). It is also a family history not unlike the one written by Alex Haley (Roots), albeit set against the historiacal backdrop of the Civil War, Reconstruction in Texas, and the Cow Town Frontier. It is a true story-that is, insofar as the facts available can be interpreted correctly. Thus, it is more than just based upon a true story, but more than likely it falls well short of being the whole truth either. As facts may come to surface in the future this story will remain subject to reinterpretation. But for now, it is indeed a real tale from out of the Old West.
The ext is laid out in storybook form. However, it is not a novel. But neither is it simply a textbook of american history. It is a family chronicle and a saga of the western frontier as one family actually lived it and as their legacy was handed down to the generations that followed. Although the story of the Thompsons is true, it reads more like fiction. It is full of intrigue and probably just about every tale that comes out of the cattle-driving era, later to be incorporated into films and books about the West. The book resembles a Larry McMurtry (Lonesome Dove) story line. The difference is that for Texas Billy and Squirrel Tooth Alice, and their friends and acquaintances including cowboys and cattlemen on the trial, lawmen and gunfighters like the Mastersons and the Earps, the hurdy-gurdy dancehall queens, and the soild doves in the cow town saloons, these stroies really happened.

Customer Reviews:
great field guide.......2007-05-12
Most chipmunks occur in the west and are very similar in appearance. This book points out the visual differences and compares with similar species. Ranges are provided as well as food habits and other data to make it easier to pinpoint species. Highly recommended for rehabbers, naturalists, and those concerned about the wildlife in a given ecosystem.
Terrific identification guide.......2006-08-30
This guide is great for figuring out what's scurrying around your yard, and also gives you some useful facts about their habits, so you'll know how and when to encourage them (or discourage). It's fun to read all the way through, and it's always my first resource when I get a new furry visitor.
A Great Field Guide and More.......2006-04-10
This book is put together like a field guide, but it goes into more detail than do many guides. Several features make the book easy to use as a guide.
Near the front, on pages 4-7, is a well-illustrated "Reference Guide" where one can see a drawing of each species along with its name and page number. The introductionis divided into several sections that cover general items such as facts about Order Rodentia and the squirrels that belong to this group.
The book is well written and entertaining, while being very informative. Illustrations are in the form of high-quality color drawings and easy to read color range maps. Range maps are right on the pages with text and drawings. There are also drawings of tracks at the beginning of each group. The pages for each species have small drawings that indicate the types of habitat preferred by that species.
Squirrels of the West covers more species than one might assume from the title. Such species as eastern gray squirrels, eastern chipmunks, southern flying squirrels, and woodchucks, usually thought of as eastern animals, are covered in detail in this fine little book.
The book misses very little. Described in detail are twenty-two species of chipmunks, six of marmots, four of antelope squirrels, nineteen of ground squirrels, four of prairie dogs, eight of tree squirrels, and two of flying squirrels.
This is a great book for children or adults. Anyone even marginally interested in squirrels of any kind will be delighted. Having had one for a few months, I now plan to order several more copies for my grandchildren and some friends. I can readily recommend this book to anyone who has an interest in the subject.
Squirrels of the West.......2001-01-06
This is a wonderful, easy-to-read book. I'm in charge of squirrels and squirrel information at the California Wildlife Center in the Los Angeles area, and found it to be a nice reference, although the book is small and doesn't go into much depth. My only disappointment when I received the book is that the title is a little misleading, as it also covers relatives of the squirrels such as chipmunks, marmots, and prairie dogs. But they are all adorable! I'm delighted that I have a copy of this book.
Customer Reviews:
Factual; complete; good introduction to an endangered specie.......1998-09-02
I serve as the Chief of Resource Education at Badlands National Park, one of the few sites in North America that has had black-footed ferrets reintroduced. This book has good information and provides children between the ages of 8 and 12 with a good introduction to this extremely rare mammal species. It is a bit dated as the black-footed ferret recovery program continues; however, it is still a good reference.

Really Bad Television.......2001-12-21
Hi yes I'm back, the 46 year old Rocky and Bullwinkle fan.
I have read this book and found it great fun. I went to see the movie no fewer than 5 TIMES!!!! Yes I love Moose and Squirrel that much!!!
I was 10 when the cartoon was on television here in England, and still have fond memories of it.
I loved the plot, Fearless Leader, Boris and Natasha breaking out of Cartoon Land and wreaking havoc through a hypnotic television to take over the planet.
HELP, WHO CAN STOP THEM!!!? Why Rocky and Bullwinkle of course, with the help of a beautiful FBI agent, Karen Sympathy (Piper Perabo). The stars: Rocket J Squirrel and Bullwinkle J Moose, together with Robert de Niro as Fearless Leader (very meanly played) Jason Alexander (a wicked Boris Badenov) and Rene Rousso (a mean Natasha Fatale).
All three played their cartoon counterparts really good and Rocky was his usual heroic self along with the world's coolest moose, Bullwinkle who proved to us never to underestimate his antlers.
Hope you enjoy this book as much as I did.
The Adventures Of Rocky and Bullwinkle: The Movie.......2000-06-17
If You loved the cartoon, you WILL love the book! The Plot is: Fearless leader, Boris and Natasha Beak into the real world, and the only way to get Rocky and Bullwinkle into the real world, is to green light the movie. So as the evil treo would say: " Moose And Squerl" are off to get the evil treo, before Fearless leader hipnotyzes everybody through his Television Station, RBTV(Really bad telivison) so he can be elected. It's Better than it sounds! Will Rocky and Bullwinkle make it in time? READ THIS AND GO SEE THE MOVIE...! And Go to the movie's web site!...

the night the televisions went down........2001-06-25
Hi it's me again, the 46 year old Rocky and Bullwinkle fan.
I recently received this book, and quite honestly found it utterly a great fun book to read.
Its a quiet night in Frostbite Falls, everyone's at home watching their favourite shows on television. All of a sudden the screens go blank! What's happened? A strike at the local studio? A powercut? No such luck!!
It seems that your friendly neighbourhood bad guy, Boris, is at it again!! Acting under orders from Mr Big, his boss, he is making 6 foot high metal munching mice!! Mr Big is on the moon, and is making misery there. He has tricked the moon men, Cloyd and Gidney (yes its nice to see you back fellas) into bringing the mice to the USA.
Time to call (no, not Rentokil) but Rocky and Bullwinkle to foil their plans, with the help of Cloyd and Gidney.
Once again, great fun and a great read. Kids will really love this. Oh, if only they were back on British tv. Maybe they could give the job of Head of the BBC to Mr Big, he could set his mice on those annoying television licence detector vans.
Boris is at it again.......2001-06-23
Hi its me again, the 46 year old Rocky and Bullwinkle fan.
I've just recently received this book, and quite frankly it was enormous fun!!!
It's a quiet evening in Frostbite Falls, everyone is at home watching their favourite tv programmes when the screens go blank!!! What's happened? A power cut? A strike at the local television station? No!! It seems that there's an epidemic of aerials being chewed off by someone or something?
Your local neighbour from Hell, Mr Boris Badenov has been up to his tricks, and has made some giant mice that eat the aerials!!! Actually, he's under orders from his boss, Mr Big, who made a crash landing on the moon, (as if he was already off this planet) who wants to take over America.
Heavens to Betsy Ross, what do we do next? Call Rentokil? No, you enlist the help of your local heroes, Rocky and Bullwinkle, who with some extra terrestial help from their moon men friends, Cloyd and Gidney, set about foiling Boris' plan.
A great read and great fun.
Adios and keep a close eye on your televisions.

the great television mystery (or Boris is at it again!).......2001-06-16
Hi yes its me, the 46 year old Rocky and Bullwinkle fan!!!
I have just received this book and once again it is really good fun.
It is a quiet evening in Frostbite Falls, everyone is home in front of their televisions when suddenly the screens go blank!!!
Why, what's happened? A strike at the local TV station? A powercut? No. An infestation of giant metal munching mice!!! Time to call in your very own resident "mousecatchers" no, not RENTOKIL, but Messrs Rocky and Bullwinkle. With a little extra terrestial help from Cloyd and Gidney, (yes its nice to see you back, fellas,) they set out to discover the mystery behind the mice.
You can guess who is behind it!! Yes, your neighbour from hell, Boris!!! Honestly, hasn't he heard of going to the pet shop to feed the mice? It seems that Mr Big, his boss, is out to take over the USA yet again.
So he tricks Cloyd and Gidney into bringing the metal monsters to our planet. Boris and Natasha swing into villainy and cause mayhem, but they reckon without the moose and squirrel who, with the help of Cloyd and Gidney and their SCROOCHING gun, they once again restore viewing to Frostbite Falls.
Come to think of it, maybe we should give the job of Head of BBC to Mr Big, he can then get rid of all those annoying Television Licence Detector Vans with them.
All in all, a good read and a good laugh for young and old alike.
Yep, rush to your local bookstore and buy this!!!
bye for now, and guard your TV sets!!!

Book Description
Authoritative, informative, and entertaining, Wilt is the first standard biography about this American legendthe unique and unforgettable Wilt Chamberlain. One of the 20th century's greatest and most controversial athletes, Wilt also had an intensely private side that the author uncovers through years of interviews with the people closest to Wilt up until the time of his death in 1999. This groundbreaking work successfully captures Wilt Chamberlain the man, while also closely examining the better-known myths that surrounded him throughout his life.
Customer Reviews:
I loved this book.......2007-03-13
At the risk of sounding redundant. This book was great and gives a lot of insight into a very fascinating individual. Personally I could have done with less information on what exactly happened in the quarters of key basketball games and more on the other things that Wilt did throughout his life. However this was still a good purchase, worthwhile read, and I am very greatful for the author to have taken the time and effort to write this book.
Wilts buddy Bob Kashey.......2006-11-28
Great book. I loved every page except page 155. That Bob Kashey character can't be real. I know a Bob Kashey that hangs out at Chile's in Lake Mary, Florida and this can't be him although he keeps insisting it is. In any case, it is a great book, well worth the investment.
Are America's Book Editors On Strike?.......2006-01-31
This is the third consecutive book I've read that is badly in need of some editing. Let's start with the front cover, which displays the following quote from sportswriter Dick Schaap: "The definitive biography . . ." Really? The book's copyright date is 2004 . . . Dick Schaap DIED in December of 2001.
Regarding Chamberlain's athleticism and interest in track and field, the last sentence of page 61 reads, "He certainly had the requisite speed, stamina and strength to become an Olympian, maybe even a medalist". Fair enough. But then, the opening line to the next paragraph starts, "Because one can't speculate on what he might have accomplished in track and field . . ." Hello? Rewrite!!!
Add to that the annoyingly endless use of parenthetical phrases to embellish sentences that need no embellishing, and this book can be hard to read. There are so many examples of this, that it's impossible to realize just how annoying it is without actually reading the book. Figure on a mininum of one per paragraph, and as many as three in one sentence.
The saving grace of this book is the subject. Wilt Chamberlain was without question one of the most interesting and accomplished of America's 20th century athletes. For me, greatness in athletics is about winning, which is why I'll always choose Bill Russell and Jack Nicklaus as the greatest of the century. But for statistical accomplishment, only Wayne Gretzky and perhaps Jim Brown can compare to Wilt. And as physical specimens go, Jim Brown is probably the only team sport player whose speed, strength and endurance match up to Wilt's. The other measure, and the one that probably puts Wilt up on his highest pedestal, is the somewhat nebulous "impact on the game". Bobby Orr in hockey and Lawrence Taylor in football are the only other athletes I can think of who are even in the shadows of what Wilt did for basketball. This was truly a remarkable athlete and an interesting man off the field as well. Although I wouldn't give this book a strong recommendation to the casual sports fan, if you are looking for an in depth biography about a great basketball player and a pretty good overview of basketball in the 50's and 60's, this is not the worst place to wind up. But I'd look elsewhere first.
One Of The Best.......2006-01-13
Being a loyal Laker fan of the 70's, I had to read this book on one of my favorite players. This in-depth book will not disappoint. The book does reveal alot that went on behind the scenes and not all of it is in a positive light.Still, Wilt was not just a great basketball player, he was a warm, genuine human being. They just don't make them like this anymore.
The Best Wilt book ever.......2005-09-01
If you want to learn about Wilt Chamberlain and can only pick up one book, this is the book. The most factual account of his life ever written, and unlike Wilt's autobiographies, this one isn't interested in putting forth a myth. Much of Wilt's life was indeed larger than life, and the book covers them, and at the same time, the author doesn't cover up Wilt's faults. He interviews countless people who knew Wilt and covers his life from all of the angles. You learn about his achievements, his greatness, and his faults. Too bad all biographies can't be this good.
I have the web's largest Wilt fan site as well as a basketball books review site. I've read countless books and articles on Wilt, so it's not easy to impress me, but I was blown away by this book.
Book Description
Today's groom expects and is expected to take on a large and often times equal role in the planning of the big event. The days of the husband–to–be just showing up with a nice suit on and having no idea of what went into the planning are long gone. This is not to say that the groom's interests need to be the same as the bride's. This book will help the groom to choose what interests them and works well with their talents. If it is not picking out the table cloths to match the flowers, than it could be working on the menu or the invitations or even designing the wedding website. For the groom who wishes to be actively involved and not be limited by traditional wedding elements, the book will suggest ways to create a modern wedding. For example turning the focus to the enjoyment of the guests and thinking of the day as a big party, while still respecting the wishes of the families.
Customer Reviews:
Gave to my future son-in-law.......2007-09-10
I gave this to my future son-in-law so he wouldn't feel so left out, but more importantly, so his mother would realize it's my daughter's wedding not hers. Worked both ways. I haven't read it, but so far, so good.
Helpful, funny, a great read for any guy.......2006-05-21
My bride gave me this even though I didn't think I'd help out too much. But I had a few questions and this really helped. It was funny, which helped, since any book that takes things too seriously wouldn't work for me. I had questions about the budget, since I was paying for somethings and trying to figure out who would pay for the rest, and I also had questions about invitations, who to invite, etc. This worked for me. I will pass it on to friends when they get married.
Pracitcal AND funny, a good mix.......2006-03-06
This book has a lot of good practical advice, like when to get a marriage license. For someone getting married out of state, this was very helpful. I also thought some of the money-saving tips were unique and not your standard fare. There was a part on dealing with problem guests that has been very helpful since we've had to deal with a lot of these types of people and as the groom I usually have to smoothe over a few egos and play peacemaker. To top it off, there's a great section about bachelor parties goes beyond other books and talks about how people really feel about strip clubs, both men and women.
To keep it interesting Gordon puts in a lot of funny stuff, like lists of songs that are inappropriate to play at a wedding and an answer to the question of whether or not throwing rice at a wedding is harmul to birds. (It's not, but his explanation is really amusing and well written.)
I got this as a gift and thought it was really helpful, one source for all of my questions. Four months to go before my wedding and there's still a lot I learned.
Funny, informative, and personal.......2006-02-18
Doug Gordon's witty writing style guides the otherwise clueless groom through the preparatory steps leading up to the wedding. The book is a fun, educating read, and is best accompanied by perusing the author's blog; by the end, you'll feel like you actually lived the experience with him.
Love this book!.......2006-01-30
I'm not a guy, nor am I engaged, and I really enjoyed this book. Gordon is funny and gives great advice. I'd recommend this to anyone.
