Rare Poultry Breeds
ASIN: 1420876813 |
Book Description
The book, over 30 years in the making and based on worldwide research about the history and evolution of Oriental poultry races with a detailed description, their origin, distribution and current day breeding status worldwide, is a long needed work while nothing like it has been published for over fifty years. This book provides in detail educational information about the ancestors of domestic chickens, whereby it traces the origin of many ancient poultry breeds, how and where they were developed many generations ago for the purpose of sportsmanship before cockfighting was banned in most countries. But that has not stopped enthusiasts and fanciers to save many of these species from extinction and rather promoting them through a worldwide interest in exhibitions competitions, whereby in Germany alone are national poultry exhibitions with over 40,000 and even to 60,000 entries every year excite the public in tough competitions as covered in this work. Moreover, the reader will learn everything essential about purposeful breeding and preserving these breeds for future generations to come. The over 250 pictures of some 35 breeds shown in this book have been collected from various sources worldwide, many are of birds bred and photographed by the author giving the reader information not available elsewhere, which includes a today's analysis of the sport of cockfighting as well as extensive information on genetics of the rarest species.
Customer Reviews:
Great Reviews - Best Book on Gamefowl.......2006-01-02
After reading the raving reviews from different sources about this book I had to buy it and must say, it is the most concise and informative book on the subject with hundreds of excellent color photos of gamefowl breeds from all over the world, Japan, Thailand,Pakistan, Europe etc. The book goes beyong just the description and development of the many gamefowl breeds all over the world, it deals with their breeding, feeding and maintenance and the use for cockfighting in countries where it is still a national sport and part of their culture. I can recommend it to anybody connected with gamefowl and interested in such research.

Book Description
A newly updated guide to one of the finest fly-fishing destinations in the country. When Trout Unlimited rated the 100 best trout streams in the United States, nine of its choices were in the southern Appalachians. Veteran angler and writer Jimmy Jacobs takes readers to these famous rivers and to many lesser-known waters in this five-state region. This updated second edition to the most comprehensive fly-angler's guide to the area includes an entirely new chapter on the New River system in North Carolina. Each chapter includes: a detailed map; information on access, regulations, and casting and wading conditions; and coverage of adjacent areas. 38 chapters cover the major river systems of five states. 34 black & white photographs, 43 maps, index.
Customer Reviews:
Good read, albeit a bit biased.......2007-07-29
A good book, but seemed to be a bit biased towards Jacob's home state of GA. They had the most comprehensive reviews and got more waters than others. To his credit, it is still a good read with some decent information on access points. I'd recommend a book more concentrated to the area you are going, but for all regions of Southern Appalachia, this is not bad considering there is not many books that cover this many miles of trout waters.
A thorough guidebook..........2007-06-03
If Jimmy Jacobs has written a book on a subject of interest to you, buy it. His guide books on southern trout fishing are thorough, concise and leave the reader prepared to catch fish regardless of the destination. He gives you all the information you need to be in position to succeed...the rest is up to you.
Great aid for your atlas on a fishing trip in the Southern Apps........2006-08-09
The author's knowledge of the territory, exact locations and land marks is very helpful. He does not go in to much, if any, detail about insect life in the streams. Overall a very good book in rating streams, fishing quality, and helping you get there.
Trout Streams of Southern Appalachia: Fly-Casting in Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, Second E.......2005-09-19
This book provides the most comprehensive guide to the fishing streams in North and South Carolina. It is a great resource and each description has a map number so each is very easy to locate.
Good Guide for Anyone New to Area.......1998-05-09
Just spent three days fishing in the GSMNP in eastern Tennessee, and found Mr. Jacobs book to be right on target. A lot of the information can be found from local flyshops, but his book really helped plan our trip in advance. Coupling this book with local advice is a formula for success.

Flyfishing in Saltwaters Magazine.......2000-07-06
On the subject of guidebooks, here's one that's tough to beat. Bob Newman has divided North America's Southeast Coast into a series of discrete areas, like images on a strip of film, and then tells what you need to know to fish each area. Excellent maps will help you find your way. If it's true that a picture is worth a thousand words, then these maps must be worth 10,000 words each. Newman also provides lists of accommodations, restaurants, fly and tackle shops, marinas, guides and other services. After dissecting North Carolina, he does the same for South Carolina and Georgia, describing the fishing in similar detail for each state. Then comes Offshore Action, a chapter on "green-water" and "blue-water" species, including tackle requirements and tactics, and another chapter on trip planning, with tips on how to arrange hotel, air or rental car reservations and how to choose a guide. Newman writes in a straightforward, breezy style and tosses in just enough anecdotes to keep things lively. As the subtitle indicates, this guide covers "light-tackle" as well as fly fishing, but the emphasis seems more on the latter. A good index helps make the book user-friendly. Kudos to Newman for a thoroughly written and professional job. With this book in hand you'll run like a train, jump like a tarpon, charge for your boat, swear to catch fish, and pull out your fly rod-Yowza! Steve Raymond

Book Description
Jim Kilgo was born and raised not far from the bottomlands of the Great Pee Dee River in South Carolina, but it was not until he was grown that he began to respond to the powerful lure of the forests, fields and swamps of the South.
For Kilgo, reentry into the wilderness becomes a window on the life that men can lead in nature. His discoveries illuminate the truth that the lives of human beings are an integral part of the larger rhythms of nature and the seasons.
"DEEP ENOUGH FOR IVORYBILLS is a record of one person's joyful reunion with woods and waters. With keen insight and rich detail it captures the pleasures of hunting, fishing, camaraderie and the excitement of the chase." (Publisher's Source)
Customer Reviews:
A Great Read.......1999-10-17
I had this book on my shelf for a long while and finally pulled it down a few days ago. I should have done it much sooner! Jim describes experiences that awaken memories from long ago. When I lay the book down and reflect on his story there always is an afterglow.
Memories of best times, the best parts of growing up........1996-09-21
I have loaned this book to several of my best friends, the ones
I shared the best and worst times with. This is the type of book
many will relate to because it reminds us of the value of
friendship and honesty. If you have a close group of friends
who have seen you at your best and worst, this book will add
a new wrinkle to the emotional bond between you. I have loaned
out my copy of a lot of books, most I never get back. This one
I always track down. It is mine.

Each fishing area profile contains detailed information about location, access and directions, physical characteristics, and bass populations. Jimmy Jacobs offers a comprehensive guide for anglers - novice and experienced alike - hunting for bass in the more than 60 public reservoirs, rivers, lakes and streams of the Peach State.
Customer Reviews:
Good introduction of most if not all of GA's lakes.......2003-08-25
This author makes a fine accomplishment of a very large task. Trying to gather info on every major lake in a state, much less Georgia, is a difficult task to say the least. Jacobs does a fine job on specifics of each lake. He provides in depth knowledge of local's advice, history of each lake, proven techniques, occasionally some record catches. My only small and minor complaint is the text could have been edited to read easier. For instance allow a table for each lake to give some of the specs i.e. Date formed, record largemouth, acreage, etc. This would make this reference book that much easier to read.

Book Description
Natural Home Heating is the first comprehensive guide to heating your home with renewable energy sources. Greg Pahl offers a well-organized, easy-to-understand tour of all available renewable home-heating options, including wood, pellet, corn and grain-fired stoves, fireplaces, furnaces and boilers as well as masonry heaters, active and passive solar systems, and heat pumps. Pahl teaches homeowners how to retrofit existing heating systems and choose renewable replacements, or design an entirely new house that can be heated comfortably with minimal environmental and financial impact.
Consider:
95% of American homes are heated with fossil fuels or electricity (which is generated mainly by fossil fuels).
Oil and gas prices will continue to rise as supplies dwindle and sources become less reliable.
Home heating costs could double or even triple in the event of a fuel crisis.
The use of fossil fuels is the primary contributor to global warming.
There are viable, clean, healthy, and affordable home heating alternatives!
Learn how to burn environmentally friendly bio-diesel fuels, not just in your car, but in your furnace. Find out how a ground-source heat pump works and why it can achieve 400% heating efficiency. Discover what it takes to make burning wood truly sustainable. Natural Home Heating explains all these details and more, making it unique in the marketplace.

Greg Pahl's book organizes everything you need to know about heating with alternative fuels in a very "non-techy, quick to find salient facts" manner.I used his book to help me make choices in buying and installing a new wood stove to heat my dome house in Maine. With all of the alternatives out there, this book helped me intelligently sort through a myriad of choices and get a stove just right for my needs.
