I think that you should read this book because it is clear and it gives a good description of what it was like for the Jews as the Holocaust began. The author described how they lived, specifically, how they dressed, slept, and ate. This gives the reader a clear understanding. It is interesting to learn about an actual family that lived during these hard times, especially for the children Piri, Etu, Joli, and Sandor. Piri's family had to make hard decisions in order to survive. The book gives a good description of the Ghetto and how they had to live for those few weeks. For example, the bathroom was smelly and gross with not much privacy. The ground was cold and hard, "What if it rains during the night?" she asked. "We'll all get soaked." They were not allowed to make fires either. They don't even know how long they are going to be there so they don't know what to expect. They build somewhat of a shelter for just their family with a tent inside it for privacy and to help keep the rain out. The author, Aranka Siegal, doesn't just give an overview of what it was like in the Ghetto; she describes every detail about it. Overall, it is a good book and I recommend it to ages 13 an up.
Book Review.......2006-04-27
Upon the Head of a Goat is a very good book. It gives a lot of back round pre-holocaust. The fact that it is a true story is even better. It teaches and touches upon the home of a Jewish family torn from each other. It describes the obstacles they had to go through to live their everyday life. They had their food, conformability, morals, thoughts, believes, and one another taken from them.
I liked this book, and I recommend it. There are parts in the book that you will question yourself on the answers that you would provide in certain situations. The ending of the book was a little disappointing because it didn't really touch upon what happened. They led up to all these thoughts and stopped.

I like history and the subject of World War II and Nazi Germany, that is why I was surprised how much I did not like this book. I found it boring and uninteresting. I wish the book had more action. I guess it was hard for me to identify with a nine year old girl and what she went through. I also do not like endings that leave you hanging. I wish we knew what happened to them after they got on the train. It was almost like I wish the book started where it ended. This book is probably better for someone younger or for someone who wants to avoid the violence and terror of World War II.
Started my love for all things Hungarian.......2004-09-05
This was the first book I read about the Shoah in Hungary, and it was so fascinating that it got me interested in all things Hungarian. It's different from many books about the Shoah in that the majority of it takes place before the Nazi invasion of Hungary on 19 March 1944, when the remaining members of the Davidowitz family are shipped off to a ghetto. Though life is growing increasingly hard for them because of the anti-Jewish regulations and the strain of living during a war in general, and Piri had to stay in the Ukraine with her grandmother and older sister Rozsi longer than she expected to because of a border war, the Davidowitzes still have a pretty normal and decent life before they have to leave for the ghetto. During this time the family also does their part to help other Jewish families and people in need, even with hiding them in safe houses or helping to smuggle them across borders, and Iboya, the next-youngest of Mrs. Davidowitz's children by her first marriage, is very involved in Zionism. And even in the ghetto, Piri's family and her best friend Judi's little family live the best they can, trying to keep their spirits up and to be happy. Piri and Judi both have their first romances in the ghetto, in fact. It's not one of those books that starts out happily and then quickly moves to the ghetto and then the camps. In fact, the book ends as they're leaving the ghetto in the cattlecar, and only a short postscript tells us what happened after that.
The book is also interesting because not all of Piri's siblings are at home, unlike many other Shoah books where all of the family are in the same house. Because her mother didn't want her grandmother to be lonely after she was widowed, she began farming out her five daughters to stay with her to keep her company, but Lilli, the oldest, wasn't her companion very long because she got married at only 16 years old and soon had a baby. Now Rozsi is living with the grandmother, and loves farm life very much, while the other older sister, Etu, is away at university in Budapest. Even after Lilli and her young daugher Manci move back in, there are still only Piri and her sister Iboya left at home along with their halfsiblings Sandor and Joli, and when Lilli's husband Lajos is arrested and Lilli insists on joining him along with Manci, there are still only the youngest four still at home. It makes it interesting because the family are in all different places instead of all suffering the same fates or suffering all together. The only complaint I have about the book is one I acquired in hindsight; it would have been helpful to have told the reader something about the pronunciation of the Hungarian names and that some of the names used, like Ica and Manci, are nicknames and not full given names.

It was a very interesting and informing book. It was easy to feel for the characters. I highly recommend it for people who are interested in the lives of young holocaust victims.

This is the story of the 1932 Natchez, Mississippi murder of the 68 year old wealthy recluse Jennie Merrill and her eccentric neighbors Octava Dockery and Dick Dana who originally were charged with the crime. The book is illustrated with over 75 photos collected by Natchez historian Sim Callon.

This book is fun to read and the illustrations are great! Anyone who enjoys reading historical information would also enjoy this book. The descriptions are detailed and the depth of information provided is a joy to those who enjoy raising goats and other livestock. This would be a good book for people researching agriculture and geographical cultures, as well.
Very enjoyable reading and looking at the many graphics, maps, and pictures.

With the advent of a borderless world, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world\'s major cities for "finished and unfinished horse, goat, pigskin, colt, mule, ass, and pony leathers" for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Consider, however, the category "satellite launch vehicles". Clearly, there are no launch pads in most cities of the world. However, the core benefit of the vehicles (e.g. telecommunications, etc.) is "consumed" by residents or industries within the world\'s cities. Without certain cities, in other words, the market for satellite launch vehicles would be lower for the world in general. One needs to allocate, therefore, a portion of the worldwide economic demand for launch vehicles to both regions and cities. This report takes the broader definition and considers, therefore, a city as a part of the global market.

This study covers the world outlook for finished and unfinished horse, goat, pigskin, colt, mule, ass, and pony leathers across more than 200 countries. For each year reported, estimates are given for the latent demand, or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.), for the country in question (in millions of U.S. dollars), the percent share the country is of the region and of the globe. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a country vis-à-vis others. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each country and across countries, latent demand estimates are created. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

There's a lot of mythology surrounding swimming and water exercises: that water work is only for senior citizens, arthritis sufferers and rehabbing professional athletes; that it's not an efficient way to build cardiovascular endurance or burn fat; that it's inferior to land-based exercise programs like running and weight training. Water Workouts not only attacks those myths, it shows how to use a swimming pool and a few pieces of equipment to improve everything: strength, endurance, flexibility, muscularity. If you don't mind getting wet, this is one of the best workout manuals you'll find.

The first book on water exercise that truly makes sense........1997-11-07
A well-written first person summary from two authors who are authorities in water exercise, one a swimming coach and triathlete, the other a Harvard sports medicine surgeon. A concise description of what is medically and scientifically sound for water exercise, yet dispersed with real-life exercises and experiences. There are many mentions of their experiences in the water with famous athletes and details of what works for them. There is a very informative guide at the end which explains their philosophy on nutrition, aerobic exercise and flexibility. It is an inspirational reading on a topic which needs more authority. I want to read the next book they write together! It is easy and informative reading, and a must for both the serious athlete and the athlete looking for a tough workout in a forgiving environment.

This book is very handy when identifying and working with foreign wood, but for domestic wood identification try the United State's Department of Agriculture's "The Encyclopedia of Wood." It's extremely in-depth and informative.

Focus On European Not USA Species.......2000-12-04
This book is of little value for the woodworker trying to identify woods commonly used on the American continent. When the species are described (with wood samples provided) the European varieties are given to the exclusion of woods from this continent. Species vary enough from the Euopean continent to make the book of very little use in identifying American woods and can even be misleading. The grain pattern on Birch is a classic example and Birch is used a great deal on funiture.
The book is very badly outdated and lists uses for various woods not seen since the late fifties and early sixties.
Consider carefully before purchasing this book.
Quiet and straightforward.......2000-10-27
This is a very friendly and straightforward book. It starts with veneer samples (quite small, but big enough) of 40 woods and finishes with descriptions of the trees that yield these 40 woods.
In between there is quite a bit of useful information on wood, and the history of woodworking. A pretty good introduction to wood for and woodworking. This book will be only modestly useful in identification, since it is limited to naked eye observations of those 40 woods.
I browsed through the 1969 edition and it clearly is from another era (with the chainsaw just being introduced!). I can well imagine that those who equate woodworking with roaring high speed machines may find this quiet book not to their liking.
Great samples. Great book........1999-05-15
If your working on a project involving exotic woods, then this book should be added to your library. The REAL wood samples are great. The book also has very useful information about many types of wood. I find this book to be a handy reference tool and am glad to have added it to my collection.

a good book for design inspiration and learning new techniques.......2007-02-24
This book is useful for people who want to know how Koos gets his effects with fabric. The author and designer are quite generous about sharing techniques that home sewers can use to design their own garments. I feel the book is inspiring and satisfying in that sense. I would also like to see a larger coffeetable-type book showing a large number of Koos's designs over the years, all professionally photographed in full color (is anyone listening out there?). But that is not the intent of this book.
Revolutionary Fabric Techniques.......2006-10-29
I'm afraid I was ignorant on who Koos was, but intrigued by the unusual fabric projects in the book. Now I know more about his one-of-a-kind womenswear, but the main intent here is to teach the home sewer collage quilting techniques with Koos as inspiration.
The book gives tips on collage design, tells about facing fabric using the yardage method and block method, and shows how to make bias tape and fabric lace. Other techniques shown include slicing, using yarn trim, origami patches, applique, and image transfer. Photos of unique garments show the many uses for the techniques.
Many of these will appeal to quilters making quilted clothing or even to use in unique quilts.
Where is Koos?.......2006-10-10
I wish that there had been more photos of Koos work! The author gives very good instruction for doing applique, making bindings etc. However, in all, the book is disappointing if one is looking for inspiration and examples of the magical fabric combinations that made Koos's tradmark. Far too few examples of Koos's couture collage. I would not have bought the book if I'd read the reviews. Too bad!
Disappointing ..........2005-04-20
A slim colourful book of some 111 pages. Deceptive in the use of Koos' name and photographs of his work, there are only about 50 pages of techniques that could equally be found in a good fabric collage or a quilting book.
