Neuroscience, Fourth Edition
ASIN: 0195152220 |
Book Description
Neuroglia is the only comprehensive reference book on the basic biology and function of glial cells. This long-awaited second edition has been completely reorganized and rewritten to include the dramatic advances in this field since the first edition was published ten years ago. The impact of the second edition will be greater than that of the first because the majority of neuroscientists now acknowledge that neuroglia are elemental to most, if not all, brain functions. The second edition covers the entire field of glial research from the basic molecular and cellular principles of these cells to their involvement in neurological diseases including stroke, Alzheimer's disease, and multiple sclerosis. It includes new chapters on transmitter release from exocytosis from glia, glia derived stem cells, glia and synaptic transmission, glia and axon guidance, an entirely new section on mechanisms of glial injury, and several new chapters on the roles of glia in different diseases. The new edition was written with both students and experts in mind. It provides a basic introduction to the entire range of glial topics and detailed information with critical assessment of the research literature. Neuroscience textbooks focus on the properties of neurons, whereas this book fills the information void about the brain's other cells. Neuroglia, Second Edition, is an essential reference source for newcomers, including graduate students, to neuroanatomy, neurochemistry, neurophysiology, and molecular neurobiology. It is also a vital companion for established researchers in these fields as well as clinicians in neurology, neurosurgery, psychiatry, neuropathology, and neuro-oncology.
Customer Reviews:
The Definitive Book on Neuroglia.......2004-12-29
I am incredibily impressed with the breadth and depth of the new, second edition of Neuroglia. It is a monumental work that spans this growing and expansive field of inquiry. I am particularly impressed with the new chapter on the history of study of neuroglia and the expanded section on the role of neuroglial cells in neurological diseases. Congratulations to the authors and editors for this wonderful work. It belongs on the bookshelf of every neuroscientist.

Book Description
Schwann cells are a diverse group of cells formed from neural crest cells. They are essential components of the peripheral nerves of both vertebrate and invertebrate nervous systems. The diversity of Schwann cell subsets and function is seen in those Schwann cells that form myelin - that uniquely specialised part of the plasma membrane that spirals around axonal lengths to myelinate the peripheral nerves. The Biology of Schwann Cells concentrates on the cells of mammals and in particular humans. It covers the distinction between compact and non-compact myelin in depth, along with the perisynaptic cells which form the partnership between nerve terminals and muscle fibre. Developmental aspects are discussed alongside differentiation, and the genetics of the cells in health and disease. With chapters from world-renowned experts, this book is aimed at postgraduates and researchers in neuroscience and neurology and anyone involved in the study of peripheral nerves.

Book Description
A distinguished panel of internationally recognized neuroscientists comprehensively review the involvement of and changes in glial cells both during the normal aging process and in the major disorders of old age. Topics range from the cellular and molecular changes that occur with aging-especially aging-associated activation of astrocytes and microglia and its relation to neuronal injury and repair-to neuron-glia intercommunication. The contributors show how glial signals may be modulated by hormones, growth factors, neurotransmitters, intracellular metabolism, and intercellular exchanges, as well as by aging of the blood-brain barrier.

Book Description
This is a new edition in the Cellular and Molecular Neurobiology series. The vast majority of cells in the nervous system are glial cells. During development, these cells provide growth factors that stimulate the proliferation, migration and survival of neurones and their precursors, and promote and guide axonal growth. In the mature nervous system, glial cells provide insulating myelin sheathe around axons and provide metabolic and structural support for neurones. Glial cells also have a major influence on the local response to injury of the central nerve tract and the peripheral nervous system, either promoting, or inhibiting, axonal regrowth and recovery of lost function. This book provides a comprehensive, state-of-the-art overview of research into the development, function and malfunction of glial cells. It offers a compelling insight into how basic research throws light onto diseases and disorders and points the way towards treatments. Teams of internationally renowned experts, all active in research, have contributed chapters.

Book Description
It is well established that glial cells represent more than mere passive cytoskeletal support elements of the central and peripheral nervous system. A reciprocal relationship exists between neurons and glia that is vital for mutual differentiation, development, and functioning of both cell types. It also has become apparent that perturbations in glial function may lead to deleterious consequences in juxtaposed neurons. It is therefore possible that neuronal damage induced by chemicals or neuropathic disease involves dissociation of glial-neuronal interactions. The Role of Glia in Neurotoxicity brings together experts in the neurosciences to provide a more complete understanding of the effects of chemicals on nervous system function. This book explores potential sites of glial-neuronal interactions both in the central and peripheral nervous system, focusing on potential sites of neurotoxicant actions. Text introduces basic aspects of neuroscience, the first step toward understanding the mechanisms at work in normal physiology. The ways in which these processes are disturbed in pathological conditions are discussed. Distinguished authors examine the functional interactions between glial cells and neurons during development, adulthood, and senescence. The roles of glia in the normal CNS and PNS are described. The book offers specific, in-depth examples of directly (via diffusive and cell surface signals) or indirectly (via effects on the extracellular fluid or the blood-brain barrier) mediated glial neurotoxicity. This reference includes different techniques, conceptual frameworks, and approaches that are currently used in the study of the role of glia in neurotoxicity. This timely review not only presents an excellent overview of the state of the science but also provides direction for future research into the consequences of an altered glial-neuronal unit.

Book Description
The definitive guide to bookmaking for the next generation. Bookmaking, first published in 1965 and revised in 1979, was the unchallenged introduction to the industry for newcomers, a reference for experienced hands, and a textbook for students. The new edition offers an updated survey, taking into account the changes the computer has wrought in the technology and the overall process of bookmaking.
Customer Reviews:
A classic, updated.......2005-08-05
Ignore the review complaining about the long wait for the 3rd edition. The 3rd is here and it's great. I have a core library of titles that I recommend to folks who are seriously interested in the real process of publishing, not the polyanna version sold to vanity publishers. This book is essential reading for understanding the broad scope of the publishing process. The chapters on production are particularly useful.
New Edition of a Classic.......2004-03-18
One of the best texts on the production of books is "Bookmaking" by Marshall Lee. The second edition is more than twenty years old, but the third edition was just published. It covers virtually all topics, from word-processing to book printing, and everything in between. Most importantly, it shows how the computer has changed the publishing world.
NOTE: Don't pay attention to "A Reader"'s review -- "Reader" is criticizing the publisher, W. W. Norton, for taking so long to print Lee's book. It's like criticizing Tiger Woods because the golf course is closed.
Where is it?.......1999-06-02
For the past 2-1/2 years, I have seen this book's publication date set back season after season.
Where is it? Why the constant pushing back of publication date?
The third edition is sorely needed. The second edition is more than twenty years old, and the entire pre-press section is thoroughly outdated and worthless.
Norton, get your act together!

Customer Reviews:
R. Hunsaker review of: The Master Builders: Le Corbusier, Mies Van Der Rohe, Frank Lloyd Wright .......2007-01-16
For those interested in the development of American architecture, this is an excellent source. It spans the works of the 3 great architects who laid down the guiding principles for modern architecture in the United States and shows the evolution of each. Many of their beautiful works are pictured and described by the author, a former architecture school dean. The principles involved and aesthetic qualities are elaborated. It gives an appreciation of how many current architectural styles evolved and also comments briefly on some of the failings of today. It also traces the interplay between artistic movements - Art Noveau, Cubism, Impressionism, de Stijl - and architecture.
The book is well written, highly literary and frequently humorous. It is enjoyable and educational for anyone with an interest in contemporary architecture and the artistic geniuses who created it as it came about in the United States thru the 20th century.
The author plays favorites........2004-07-20
This book seeks to profile three architects of worldwide influence, each of whom has profoundly influenced the built environment we experience today. It provides rich glimpses into the architectural environment of the early 20th century, and tells a compelling tale of three architects who each shook off the vine-covered frippery of art nouveau in their own way. It's a good book, but upon re-reading it last year, the author's clear bias towards (almost hero-worship of) Le Corbusier came through much more strongly than when I was a neophyte in college. The book paints Mies Van der Rohe as a cold German technocrat with a talent only for efficiency; Frank Lloyd Wright as a pure iconoclast and egomaniac whose vision was so ideosyncratic that it had only limited influence; and Le Corbusier as a genre-defying revolutionary hero who singlehandedly rescued and reinvented architecture as art. In my opinion, at least, each of these judgments are almost entirely wrong. Even if you kind of agree with Blake's pantheon, the hagiography of Corbu gets a bit embarrasing in places. A great book for the history and context, but I would certainly hope that this book wouldn't be the last thing you read about any of these men.
Touches the 3 masters topically.......2002-08-23
Maybe the only book that attempts to compare (rather...state) the big 3. However I think that it degenerates to being a history book that just states facts that are already available in any monograph on each. There is less commentary and more facts. I guess it is a biggeners book to understand who these men were and what projects they did in their lifetime. The only good thing is that this seems to be the only place where you can read about them as a kind of a time-line.....realizing how each one affected the other.
I wish there was a more discussion and comparison/differentiation of the kind of space that these 3 were talking about and a more indepth analysis of their ideologies. Guess we have to wait for someone else to take that risky venture.
Excellent review of three amazing lives........2002-01-24
This book provides the reader not only with deep insight into these three great pillars of the 20th century, but also helps one understand their influence on art as well. One can see the bridge between their buildings and artists like Braque, Rothko, and those associated with De Stijl. I think it is a fine book for those who may not be familiar with these three men. It is highly readable and recommended!
An excellent book to start.......2001-07-20
This book by Peter Blake is very good if you are just beginning to know about these three iconic architects. It has everything someone who is not an architect could need to know who Le Corbusier, Mies van der Rohe and Frank Lloyd Wright were. If you want to go deep into the career of these architects, study their lives and works, this is a first step, and a very good one, but only that.
It is well written, entertaining and true. As a teacher, I would recommend it to architecture students as mandatory reading, best if read in the second or third year of their college years.
Even as it is a basic book, I have it on my night table.

Wright and Fallingwater.......1999-08-01
Frank Lloyd Wright advised in his autobiography that "no home should ever be on a hill"; instead, it should be "of the hill, belonging to it." Just as gestalt theory described the holistic connections between figures and backgrounds, Wright emphasized the interdependence of an architectural structures and their surroundings. It is said that he always decided the site before considering a building's style, its spatial orientation, or the materials with which to build it. Of all his projects, there may be no better example of that than Fallingwater (c. 1938), a small but elaborate home in the woods (commissioned by a wealthy Pittsburgh department store owner named Edgar J. Kaufmann) in which the building is embedded in the landscape, making it inseparable from the waterfall, woods, and cantilevered rock ledges of its location. While much has been written about Fallingwater as a completed structure, less has been said about its preparatory drawings, the friendship between merchant prince and master builder, and the dozen projects that Wright and the Kaufmanns intended to build (few of which were ever realized) from 1934 until the architect's death in 1959. This is the full-color catalog for an exhibition of fifty of the more than 600 Wright drawings for projects commissioned by Kaufmann, which opened on 10 April and continues through 3 October 1999 at the Heinz Architectural Center at the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh. (Copyright by Roy R. Behrens from Ballast Quarterly Review, Vol. 14, No. 4, Summer 1999.)
Book Description
This remarkable book presents twenty-five of the most renowned and significant buildings of America's premier architect, from his early Prairie work at Oak Park, Illinois, in the 1890s to his daring creations of the 1940s and 1950s.
Published in association with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, this superbly illustrated volume features unpublished photographs for which renowned architectural photographers Michael Freeman and Paul Rocheleau gained unprecedented access to some of Wright's masterworks. The book examines in unsurpassed detail a selection of Wright's architecture that covers the phenomenal range of his work, including such internationally famous buildings as the Home and Studio in Oak Park, Taliesin West in Scottsdale, Arizona, Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as several lesser-known residences such as the Auldbrass Plantation in South Carolina and the Kenneth Laurent house in Rockford, Illinois.
The works featured here are succinctly documented by one of Wright's former apprentices, with text that details the development and execution of each commission. Also included throughout is a selection of Wright's extensive writings, unpublished talks, and private letters.
Frank Lloyd Wright: Master Builder takes the reader on a rich journey into Wright's world and fully demonstrates how Frank Lloyd Wright's vision completely changed the course of American architecture.

A Good Introduction.......2002-05-22
A good introduction to the work of Frank Lloyd Wright. The book focuses primarily on Wright's residential work ("Fallingwater" is included), though there are a few churches, a civic center, and of course, the Guggenheim Museum. The photographs are terrific, but the writing is, while eloquent, nevertheless a bit lacking; one gets the impression the poor writer was hired merely to wrap words around the pretty pictures. Still, if you're new to the work of this masterful, prolific artist (as I am), this book serves as a good introduction.
