If you liked Bill Silliker’s book Uses for Mooses, you’ll enjoy this book, as well. It is a masterful combination of humour, popular culture, and education -- all related to everyone’s favourite animal: the moose. Most of the book is about how humans have reacted to moose and the many odd things that have been done in the name of moose, from beer branding and the naming of U. S. Air Force squadrons to recipes for exotic cocktails, such as Moose Milk. In addition to the late Bill Silliker’s fabulous photos of moose, you’ll find some serious animal behaviour information about Alces alces written at a very accessible level, including such topics as mating habits, habitat range, and size and weight ranges.

5 out of 5 stars Greg Oliver always delivers!.......2007-08-18

This is one of the best wrestling books of all time and I rank it right up there at the top of my list of best wrestling books. Greg Oliver always delivers. He is well researched and he knows his stuff inside and out. I read this book cover to cover when I first got it and have read it several times since. I use it quite often as a reference book also.

If you love wrestling and want to read about the boys from the past and now and want to hear their stories in and out of the ring get this book... and anything else Greg Oliver and Steve Johnson put out.

5 out of 5 stars Back in the Day...........2007-05-08

Finally, someone has written a book that mentions the tag teams I grew up watching when the NWA was in full bloom: George Becker and Johnny Weaver; George and Sandy Scott; Rip Hawk and Swede Hansen; Aldo Bogni and Bronco Lubich; The Infernos and more. Up to now, I thought no one would ever acknowledge the excellent performances of these folks. If you feel the same way, buy this book - you won't be disappointed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Book.......2006-02-03

Colorful stories and a great look at the history of professional wrestling. The authors take you from the very beginning of "Australian Rules Tag" matches to modern day. I don't know how younger fans will appreciate this book but for anyone over 35 this book is a MUST READ. It can also be used as a reference when arguing with your buddies. The photos are a great throwback to a time when wrestling publicity pictures were black and white and reminded me of my childhood paying 50 cents for a glossy 8x10.

5 out of 5 stars The Most well researched Wrestling History Book ever.......2005-09-22

Greg Oliver & Steve Johnson did an outstanding job in writing The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Tag Teams. No other wrestling history book ever has gone to the effort that these guys have. Ever tag team written about was either contacted an interviewed or if all the memebers were deceased at least a family member was tracked down and interviewed. Their rating system was well done and not without contraversy. Love or hate where they ranked your favorite tag team, they made you think about it and discussion amongst the wrestling community has been hot and heavy on this book. Great insight into many tag teams from years gone by the most fans either new little about or never heard of. They helped bring back memories of great teams like the Kangaroos, Kentuckians and The Infernos. Great photos a sprinkled throught. This is a must read for any wrestling fan of tag team wrestling. No other wrestling history book even comes close to covering tag team wrestling like this book.

4 out of 5 stars good but lacks.......2005-09-16

This is a good history of tags teams in wrestling. It gives a good account of in ring actions as well as the story behind the men. The only thing it lacks is more tag teams especially the last 10 years or so.

    Book Description

The RIGGING HANDBOOK - 2nd Edition is a reference guide that contains 168 pages in 6 easy-to-use sections, with over 180 illustrations and data tables. This book is considered by many as the "standard" field reference for rigging. It is used in many rigging training programs offered by technical colleges, companies, trade unions, and various government institutions and departments. Data includes: wire rope; synthetic slings; chains; rigging hardware; slings and working load limits; calculating sling forces; estimating weights of objects; drifting loads with chainfalls; blocks and fairlines; inclined planes; single hook turning loads; two hoist load turning; center of gravity; crane hand signals; numerous lifting and rigging examples; common weights of objects; key points from current OSHA, ANSI, and applicable API standards; sling and hardware inspections; and other data that is commonly needed by riggers and crane operators in the field.

The RIGGING HANDBOOK is a well-illustrated reference source created for rigging professionals, crane operators, and others that perform rigging and hoisting operations.

This handbook essentially represents the working notebook of the author. It is based on material used in the construction and repair of turbine generators and other power plant components over the past 28 years. The RIGGING HANDBOOK provides concise, simple answers to rigging situations that may otherwise appear complex in nature. The notes explain and illustrate some of the basic and complex problems associated with a wide variety of rigging situations. Both apprentices and journeymen will appreciate the simple layout and organization of this valuable reference.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Rigging Handbook is great!.......2003-12-10

This book provided me with a better understanding of how to recognize potential problems with rigging. I have purchased several copies of this book for all our employees to help them perform safer lifts by learning more about the slings and hardware that they are using.
The illustrations are very understandable and compelling. Explanations are simple and the reader won't require special knowledge of math or physics to understand the material.

4 out of 5 stars TO whomever you were - .......2007-07-16

I've always loved dancing, though not professionally as a prefer club-style. While I haven't attempted other forms of dance, hip hop has always provided an extreme work-out and took an exceptional amount of energy.
I followed Blake McGrath and Benji Schwimmer closely during the "So You Think You Can Dance" on Fox TV (call me corny but we all have hopes and dreams).
More recently I went to California after seeing the dance company Coastal Dance Rage was now co-owned by Blake McGrath and Josh & Shannon Mather - After leaving the studio after the first time I was completely exhausted. As I was leaving on my third day someone leaving the studio handed me this book and wow - incredible, I've never felt better and more aware of my actions. My flexibility as improved greatly, which was a key failure point previously that I could not get beyond.
Unfortunately I never saw the the person that handed me the book again - so to whomever you were - Thank you!

    4 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2007-03-14

Franklins imagery and anatomical understanding is expressed effortlessly. It is a pleasure to read his work and apply it to my work in the physical sciences

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-17

I am NOT a dancer. I am just an advanced beginner in Yoga.

I'm not sure how I found this book, but I'm more than glad I did. I have chronic lower back pain, and the excercises using balls are very therapeutic.

Franklin's use of imagery, his explanations and wonderful drawings of anatomy are simply fantastic.
I have found that just reading the book and not doing anything has helped my yoga and my posture. Of course, actually doing the exercises is even better!

I would be delighted if Franklin put out a DVD with this kind of material. I have bought many yoga and dance DVDs and the thing I do not like about almost every single one of them is not explaining in any way WHY a certain movement or posture may be beneficial. There's all just mindless work-outs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for anyone.......2006-12-02

As a pilates/belly dance teacher (and performer) I know the importance of using visualisation techniques to release tension, increase range of motion, and free the body. This book has greatly expanded my teaching repertoire and also my understanding of the core musculature, particularly the pelvis (the power center). Highly recommend this to anyone no matter what their occupation!
Try his other books as well. All excellent!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent tool for any dancer!.......2006-11-11

This book has been very helpful to me as I returned to ballet at 27 after a two year hiatus. I purchased the Franklin Method balls and found them very useful in implementing some of the exercises. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to increase their abilities and lenghten the life of their physical abilities.

    Book Description

Ballet dancers have the strongest, most beautiful, probably the most envied bodies in the world. How do they stay slender and willowy while maintaining the extraordinary energy it takes to perform night after night? Can a nondancer or an amateur attain a dancer's figure and a dancer's vitality? And keep it?

Here, in The Dancers' Body Book, the legendary ballerina Allegra Kent discloses the health, weight-watching, and relaxation secrets of some of the world's greatest ballet dancers -- from Suzanne Farrell and Fernando Bujones to Darci Kistler and Madame Alexandra Danilova. Combining them with two well-balanced diets -- one to lose weight by and one to live by -- and an exercise regimen that can be tailored to the individual, she provides a fabulous fitness program for everyone who longs to be slimmer, healthier, and more energetic.

Fourteen varied menus incorporate delicious recipes from the dancers themselves (such as Jacques D'Amboise's Wonderful Dinner Salad and Dierdre Carberry's Almond Meringue Kisses), along with calorie guides and advice on how to create additional menus using your own favorite dishes. Helpful discussions on sports and exercise systems -- ranging from jogging and swimming to the sophisticated "Pilates" workout -- are also included, and in a special chapter entitled "A Healthy Outlook," the dancers talk candidly on such issues as smoking, anorexia, vitamins, doctors, massage, junk foods, fad diets, and injuries.

Dancers take meticulous care of all their equipment because training and performance depend on it. Of course, the most essential piece of equipment, the body, needs the most care of all, and that is what this book is about: how to take care of the world's greatest machine.

Allegra Kent joined the New York City Ballet at the age of fifteen and was a principal dancer with the company for thirty years, during which time she created a number of starring roles in ballets by Balanchine and Robbins. The mother of two daughters and a son, she is also the author of Allegra Kent's Water Beauty Book.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very accurate, a great tool for any dancer.......2007-09-28

I must say I had my doubts, but after reading this book, I am very pleased. The book provides effective guidelines for a dancer. As a dancer, eating disorders are unfortunately still an issue in ballet (maybe other dance too). This book, however, gives a safe plan to incorporate into life. I wish I had bought it when I was 10 yrs old! Of course it is geared more towards actual dancers, not just people who take dance classes a few times a week. But, I think most people will be able to use the guidelines and adjust things to fit their own lifestyles.

    3 out of 5 stars Outdated.......2007-01-28

This book is pretty outdated and was not written for those of us living in the 21st century. Some of it still applies, but I just find it to be something of the past. Why don't people just go to a nutritionist and follow their simple rules? For example, no white at night (e.g. breads, pastas, etc.) or that the biggest meal of the day should be breakfast or lunch. One can eat well and eat more filling foods and still stay lean and slender.

3 out of 5 stars A Fun Read But I Have Other Recommendations........2006-01-06

For a more scientific approach, purchase "Diet for Dancers" by Chmelar and Fitt. To eat like a ballerina (light & healthy), buy Linda Hymes' "The Dancing Gourmet". These two books together are all you need.

1 out of 5 stars Great book to help you develop anorexia.......2005-02-24

This book should be avoided by young people. My sister was given this book by her teacher and still has problems with anorexia....

1 out of 5 stars read this book with caution.......2004-01-17

I have read this book several times, and as a dancer, it actually encourages me NOT to follow the outrageous diet plans of the dancers featured in the book. Admittedly, i can relate to the desperate measures that these people will take to lose weight perhaps temporarily, for a certain ballet or an important audition. However, these are not measures that I am proud of, and frankly I find it disturbing that Ms. Kent feels free to encourage extreme behavior, especially in young people (and ESPECIALLY young dancers!) The active lifestyle of a dancer needs to be supplemented by proper nutrition; the mere mention of Susan Jaffe's summer of drinking "a lot of iced tea" to help acquire her job with American Ballet Theatre is dangerous information for aspiring, developing young girls to have their hands on. We can only hope that anyone reading this book for the first time will take it with a grain of salt, considering it was written nearly twenty years ago.
