Beautiful gorilla book for young and old.......2001-03-16
Any gorilla lover will appreciate this book for its beautiful photography and information about the species. It is not meant to be an exhaustive tome for gorilla studies. Rather, the author provides an intimate glimpse of the endangered mountain gorilla and introduces the casual reader to a basic knowledge, such as the three species of gorilla and the threat facing their diminishing population.
It's a must have and makes a great gift for an adult or a child interested in gorillas.

Wonderful coverage.......2007-07-07
This dictionary is great! My boyfriend is from Greece and sometimes communication can be challenging. I'm a new student of Greek, and this has been an excellent resource. This dictionary has excellent word coverage. Everything I've searched for has been in the dictionary. Highly recommended!
Never got it.......2007-04-18
It never came. We spent our honeymoon in Greece with a poor substitute we picked up from a tourist bookstore.
Not always up-to-date.......2007-01-10
I have been taking modern Greek classes for a year and a half and using on this dictionary to supplement my textbooks. [Note to Word Bird and others: this is not a Greek phrase book for tourists.] I have found it useful and relatively comprehensive, and most of my complaints are minor.
I find the print size a little too small for my middle-aged eyes. Also, the size and particular font used are not the clearest for distinguishing certain letters. E.g., the tails on the sigmas are very short, so they often look like omicrons.
I rely on it mostly for writing, both compositions for class and letters to Greek relatives, so I more often am using the English-to-Greek section. It sometimes is difficult to find Greek translations of English-language idioms. Also, as to be expected, the dictionary is stronger on providing translations of idioms used by British speakers than it is with respect to American idioms.
Finally and most importantly, according to my native Greek professor who reads my writing, some of the Greek vocabulary provided by the dictionary, in both single words and idioms, is out-of-date and/or relatively stuff in its formality. Perhaps the out-of-date words are inevitable leftovers from previous editions. And perhaps the stuffiness comes from it being compiled by a British academic, though this speculation might merely be a product of my American prejudices. In any case, until a younger scholar produces a new Greek-English, English-Greek volume, or until I read something really good about any of the other volumes, this will have to do.
Greek to me!.......2006-05-01
I purchased two of these books before my daughter and I traveled to Greece. It's of no help for English speakers - it only translates from Greek alphabet to English and English to Greek. It's all Greek to me!
A valuable asset for any Greek student!.......2005-11-28
I love this dictionary! It is small enough to fit in my purse, and I find myself referring to it all the time. It includes verb declension charts in the back and next to the Greek words lists other common phrases you might be searching for (which is very very useful)! The Greek student will probably eventually want to get a second larger dictionary for keeping at home because this does not have everything in it. However it does contain enough that I have made it through two years of university level Greek courses and am starting on my third with this as my only dictionary. A wonderful asset for anyone learning the Greek language!

Great for the intended purpose.......2007-09-30
My wife's minivan fails miserably at hauling heavy loads or towing other vehicles. However, it does quite well at the specific task it was designed for.
This compact, lightweight dictionary will not replace Liddell-Scott's Intermediate Lexicon for me anytime soon. Yet, it travels well, has nicely readable text, and the English to Greek section is quite useful. I'm keeping mine.
Good first glassical greek dictionary.......2006-11-11
Very helpful for first year greek student. This is not a comprehensive dictionary but for the price you can't beat it. You could spend the $150 for a comprehensive one but I don't reccommend it.
Okay..........2006-08-02
Pros:
- good, easy to read format
- selection of ancient greek names
- comprehensive greek section
- map of ancient Greece
- good alphabet table in front
cons:
- the english to greek section is VERY short and not very comprehensive.
- the section on grammer/pronunciation is only three pages long
All in all, an okay buy.
Okay.......2006-06-04
This dictionary is worth something because it has English to Greek entries. The section with Greek names and proper nouns is also quite useful for pronunciation and reference.
That being said, the lack of verb principal parts makes this dictionary rather weak. For students of Attic Greek it is essential to have access to every verb form. What could be a five star product gets only three for this "bush league" error.
Far better than the Langenscheidt.......2005-04-19
Finally we have a classical Ellenic dictionary that has an English to Greek section and a complete section on numerals. Exactly why every text on the classical Greek language seems to shy away from the simple matter of counting from one to ten has always been a mystery to me, but now the point is moot. I got this book in the mail a week ago and can now toss my Langenscheidt in the trash.

Customer Reviews:
Inadequate at best.......2007-08-17
I bought this dictionary rather rashly as it was the only one left on the shelf at my campus bookstore. Needless to say I will be returning it as soon as I get an opportunity. Smallness being the only meritorious feature, the very first entry I sought a definition for was, to my amazement, not there; and neither were the other two words I looked up after. I borrowed the HarperCollins Latin Concise Dictionary from the library and it too was rather disappointing though it contains 60,000 more entries than the Pocket OLD.
ease of use.......2007-05-14
I bought this dictionary for my son who is taking Latin I this year. He had complained that the dictionaries that they had at school were very difficult to use since they gave every possible definition or translation. He loves this dictionary! He would highly recommend this dictionary for every beginning latin student.
Concise and portable..........2002-12-30
This is a fairly useful Latin Dictionary... I got it, because I thought it would be useful as a student of law and the classics. Though, perhaps its overarching merit is simply its portability. Usefulness and comprehensiveness are sacrificed to the utilitarian value of small size. Jurists (e.g. legal scholars) and Medical professionals might find it lacks too many key Latin terms relevant to their discipline.
very portable but with flaw.......2001-07-05
I used this to look up the meanings of anatomy terms as I prepare to start medical school this Fall. While studying an anatomy atlas with the dictionary sitting on the atlas the blue ink from this dictionary's cover smeared all over my anatomy book's pages. Otherwise it was useful. I spent three years learning ancient Greek and Latin a few years ago, and if you plan to go beyond the elementary level in Latin I suggest you get the Chambers Murray or the Cassell dictionary. Chambers Murray is actually quite portable, but heavy for its size.
Only Merit is Small Size.......2000-04-30
This dictionary is not the most useful dictionary I've seen around. Indeed, it is very limited in scope and contains very few entries. The entries that are in fact included in the dictionary are not particularly helpful. In particular, the definitions are not always accurate, although they are concise.
The format of the entries can be quite confusing; the presentation of verbs being quite the worse I've seen. For instance, the principal parts of the verb retraho is given as 'retraho, xi, ctum, [3]'. It takes considerable guesswork to realise that the 'xi' and 'ctum' stand for 'retraxi' and 'retractum' respectively. In this aspect, it is not particularly helpful to beginners, who cannot be expected to guess the correct form.
Otherwise, the layout of the dictionary is refreshingly well done, partly due to the sparseness of each page. The print is clear and of a good size.
All in all, it is suitable only for the beginner in Latin because of the paucity of entries, and, even so, the presentation of verbs might be confusing. It is certainly nowhere near the level of excellence attained by the big Oxford Latin Dictionary. One point in its favour is it's small size, being quite the smallest I've seen (along with the Collins Gem one) and certainly lives up to it's 'pocket' description, fitting quite easily in one.
Book Description
Now in a new, 60-day journal format, this program introduces a super-simple, four-step process that teaches aspiring artists how to develop drawing skills in as little as two months. In a humorous, down-to-earth tone, the innovative system breaks down complex classical concepts and leads novices through basic elements of drawing such as line, shape, value, and texture. Building both confidence and skill as they work their way through the exercises, students learn how to see shapes, lines, and contour, in addition to how to shade, create texture gradation, and draw from photographs. An accompanying DVD demonstrates the presented techniques.

Great Way to Learn.......2007-08-07
Have just been using this book for 10 days and can already see amazing progress and improvement. I have never had an art lesson but always wanted to learn. I an sure that with continued practice I will get where I never dreamed I could.
Sandi's system works wonders.......2007-03-31
I am a person who could not draw a straight line. My efforts at art were pathetic. I thought I was hopeless. But Sandi's method has helped me immensely. Anyone who follows the instructions, and does each step, should not fail. It depends on how much time you give it (practice, practice, practice) and how closely you follow the instructions. Even my 12 year old daughter gets amazing results when following Sandi's teaching. You will be amazed how using some simple techniques will turn you into an artist.
drawing instructions.......2007-02-03
Her book and method is amazing. She teaches us we all can draw if we really want to, it is only our own inhibitions preventing us from doing what we love. Her methos allows us all to draw fairly realistic even if you are more of an impressionist. Good for young and old. Gives many hours of enjoyment.
First class workbook - buy it!.......2006-10-01
If you are looking for a workbook this is one of two that I would highly recommend. I gave this excellent book four stars instead of five because I doubt that a real beginner would miraculously develop professional skills from it alone, despite the claims. BUY IT ANYWAYS. The instructions are basic, but sufficient. I am partway through the exercises, and this book has helped my skills a great deal even in ten or so quick exercises (and I have many more to do!). This workbook will show you how to really draw what you see - truely - and that's about it. You draw right in the book, though I cut the pages out to make the process easier. There are plenty of exercises, so you can develop with practice, instead of "wham! Bam!, Now you are an Artist!". I love the new techniques that I am learning. Definately buy this book for what it is - a workbook that will painlessly teach you some solid drawing skills.
I CAN DRAW!!!.......2006-09-22
Don't hesitate on buying Sandra Angelo's books, videos, or tools. Her approach to teaching drawing has opened a whole new world for me. I've nearly completed the "So You Thought You Couldn't Draw" book of drawings using Sandra's step-by-step technique and I'm completely astounded at my progress. As a beginner that could only draw stick figures and two-dimensional cats and dogs, I can now draw flowers, landscapes, and a variety of animals that one can actually recognize. Also, Sandra's videos are a must while working through the book. Using the book and videos together, Sandra clearly describes her techniques, gradually moving the student through a series of exercises that quickly shows results. The tools Sandra recommends and sells are proven and the best quality for a reasonable price. It took the pressure off of me to decide what tools would produce the best drawing. I intend to move onto to Sandra's Exploring Colored Pencils book and videos and then onto mastering the art of faces and the human figure. I'm also very excited about applying my newfound talent to art quilts too.
