Book Description
There has long been a need for a comprehensive one-volume reference on the main types of processed meat products and their methods of manufacture. Based on over twenty years' experience in the industry, Meat Products Handbook is designed to meet that need. It combines a detailed practical knowledge of processing and ingredients with the scientific underpinning to understand the effect of particular process steps and ingredients on product safety and quality. The author sets the stage with a review of meat composition and its effect on quality together with the role of additives. It goes on to discuss raw materials, additives, manufacturing processes, and representative recipes for a range of particular meat products.

Book Description
Commercial Chicken Meat and Egg Production is the
5th edition of a highly successful book first authored by Dr. Mack O. North in 1972, updated in 1978 and 1984. The 4th edition was co-authored with Donald D. Bell in 1990. The book has achieved international success as a reference for students and commercial poultry and egg producers in every major poultry producing country in the world.
The
5th edition is essential reading for students preparing to enter the poultry industry, for owners and managers of existing poultry companies and for scientists who need a major source of scientifically based material on poultry management.
In earlier editions, the authors emphasized the chicken and its management. The
5th edition, with the emphasis shifted to the commercial business of managing poultry, contains over 75% new material. The contributions of 14 new authors make this new edition the most comprehensive such book available. Since extensive references are made to the international aspects of poultry management, all data are presented in both the Imperial and Metric form.
Over 300 tables and 250 photos and figures support 62 chapters of text. New areas include processing of poultry and eggs with thorough discussions of food safety and further processing. The business of maintaining poultry is discussed in chapters on economics, model production firms, the use of computers, and record keeping. Updated topics include: breeders and hatchery operations; broiler and layer flock management; replacement programs and management of replacements; nutrition; and flock health. New chapters address flock behavior, ventilation, waste management, egg quality and egg breakage.
Other new features include a list of more than 400 references and a Master List of the tables, figures, manufacturers of equipment and supplies, research institutions, books and periodicals, breeders, and trade associations.
Commercial growers will find the tables of data of particular interest; scientists will be able to utilize the extensive references and to relate their areas of interest to the commercial industry's applications; and students will find that the division of the book into 11 distinct sections, with multiple chapters in each, will make the text especially useful.

An admirably thorough guide to the tools of the production-line meat processing trade. The superb colour photographs particularly made it a perfect gift for my 15 year old daughter who is showing alarming signs of not becoming vegetarian.

Customer Reviews:
pretty good info, but printing errors.......2002-10-03
I got this book after I went to the trinity alps, and the information is definitely good, however there was a whole section that was just missing from the book; I suppose it was a printing error or something.
Captures the Spirit of the Alps.......2000-09-18
Excellent, packed with practical, detailed, descriptive information--- but above and beyond this --- the book captures the "spirit" -- the essense of that special place beyond the edge of time --- the Trinity Alps Wilderness.
And by the way, I've backpacked the Alps heavily for more than a decade --- but if anyone knows the Alps better than the author, Wayne Moss, I've yet to meet that person.
I rarely endorse products, but give this book five stars!
Real insider info.......2000-07-10
This book is like having a good friend tell you where the best places are to have the experience you're looking for. Some of the accounts are laugh-out-loud funny.
He doesn't hold your hand, though, so make sure you check current trail conditions and get updated maps from the forest service.
A Great Guidebook for the Beautiful Trinity Alps.......2000-06-01
This is an incredible book by a person who has spent 40+ years traveling in the Alps. This isn't like other guidebooks that tell you where to hike, how long to spend at each destination, etc. As someone else said, this book is set up like an encyclopedia, divided into 7 sections of the Alps. Wayne tells you about each section. The sections contain information on each lake, trailhead, and mountain in that section. For example, in the Southeast Section, under Swift Creek Trailhead, you will find the way to get to the trailhead, the trails on the trailhead, the destinations (lakes, mountains, meadows, etc.), Elevation, Difficulty, and Summary. There are 15 or so destinations to pick from if you go to the Swift Creek Trailhead. In the same section, each lake, mountain, and meadow is described in detail.
I have used Wayne's book for three years. It has taken my family and me to some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. It is also a very good read. I have read it cover to cover, and sometimes I read it in January or February as I'm dreaming of spending a weekend in the Alps. I just got it out last week and we have planned our first trip of the new year.
I have the added pleasure of knowing Wayne personally. He is the president of the board of directors of the non-profit public service organization I work for. He a great guy with great stories about the beautiful Trinity Alps.
Without a doubt: the definitive guide to the Trinity Alps.......1999-12-04
There are two guidebooks to the Trinity Alps, and this one is by far the better one. (Yes, I have both!)
The books exhaustively covers every last peak and lake and trailhead in the Alps. I had fun trying to find lakes that WEREN'T in the book. It's literally an encyclopedia, and has a format that I wish more guidebooks would use. Instead of listing trails by ease (or difficulty, if you prefer) and number of nights and so on, it rather lists features in the landscape (mountains, rivers, etc.) and cross-references them with the proper trailhead so that you can plan you own trip much more easily than by adapting someone else's itinerary to your own needs. Sure, he discusses the popular routes, but the book is laid out in more of an index format.
These features and organization alone make for a great guide, but this book is so much more than that. This is the first guide that I actually read cover to cover just because it was so INTERESTING. His sense of humor and wonder with world really come through in his writing -- he strikes me as a really enlightened individual and has done a wonderful job of blending the "hard facts" with his own perspectives, anecdotes, and history in the Trinity Alps. If only more people would write guidebooks like this one...

Customer Reviews:
Great book about a great place!.......2003-01-19
This is really a great book and one of the best on the Trinity Alps. It is a different book from my favorite, the Trinity Alps book by Wayne Moss. Wayne's book is more of an encyclopedia, while this is a book for hikers. Wayne's book lists every lake and trail, while this book has 51 different journeys.
This book has the most photos of any of the Trinity Alps books. This can be a good thing, although I like to hike to a place and be surprised at what I find. Dennis is not a fisherman, so you won't find information on fishing the lake and streams of the Alps. The maps are great, as is the information on distances to the lakes.
As an example of what I like about the book, let's explore the trip to Canyon Creek, the most popular journey in the Trinity Alps. It's 6 pages long, includes a map with the surrounding areas, a photo of the Lower Falls, and a graph of key distances, including the McKay Camp, Lower Falls, Canyon Creek Meadows, Middle Falls, etc. That way you know at the Middle Falls you have 3 more miles to "L" Lake.
A great book and a fun read. Good job, Dennis!

Backpacking California (Backpacking)
ASIN: 0899971768 |
Amazon.com
At 9,002 feet, the tallest peak in the Trinity Alps of northwestern California hardly compares to the High Sierras; but when solitude is important, such comparisons are meaningless anyway. As the authors gladly point out in their introduction to this assortment of 32 different day hikes and backpacking trips, "Bigger is not necessarily better." With scores of glacier-gouged alpine lakes, deep conifer forests, rushing coastal streams and waterfalls, and rolling meadows, the Trinity Alps are a gorgeous--if understated--destination for wilderness enthusiasts. And like other Wilderness Press hiking guides, this one comes not only with trail descriptions, but also with chapters on the area's natural history, human history, climate, and wildlife, as well as a foldout topographic map.
Book Description
Discover the Trinity Alps, which form a rugged divide between the Salmon, Scott and Trinity River drainages in the northwest part of the California. The Trinity Alps are known for their rugged beauty, splendid waterfalls, and hundreds of small beautiful lakes.
This book tells hikers how to get to the heart of the Trinity Alps in 32 trips, varying in length from 3 to over 50 miles. Includes 100 photographs and a large, 4-color, fold-out map of the region.
Customer Reviews:
pretty good general description of the alps.......2001-06-20
A pretty good general description of the alps. Could have had a bit more background info and detail about the alps natural history and human history, but its satisfactory as is, considering the dearth of guides to the alps. The route descriptions are a good, diverse guide to some of the various hikes you can take. I was dissappointed with the map, I thought they should have supplied the forest service's topo map of the alps. All in all, worth the price.
Excellent guide to the Trinity Alps.......1999-08-08
Luther Linkhart's book is the classic guide to the Trinity Alps, offering a detailed guide along numerous routes of varying lengths in the Alps. I've hiked throughout the Trinity Alps for over 20 years and have found this book helpful every step of the way as I tried new areas. Even if you modify the suggested routes you will find the information useful and interesting. If you hike the Alps consult this book first; then contact the Forest Service Ranger Station in Weaverville, California, to verify conditions on your intended route.

Funny and well organized.......2004-04-11
I only get to hike in the Trinity alps once a year, usuallyin August, and this is one of my favorite guides. Heck, I even read it in the dead of winter because it's so entertaining and well written. Bernstein has a keen sense of humor and an eye for the ridiculous and you'll find yourself laughing aloud at some of his more pithy commentary. There are a number of hiking guides relating to this region of California, but few that exceed this one in entertainment value alone. It's small enough to carry in your back, but meaty enough to read in your Lazy Boy in front of the fire.
I've traveled all over the world and one of the most beautiful natural settings I've seen is the Trinity alps. The mountains, the vegetation, flowers and mild summer climate make this a unique paradise. Hiking here is a sublime experience! If you're a dedicated hiker and have missed these mountains, please try and remedy this. You'll spend some of the best hours of your life hiking in this incredible place.
If you're a beginner, there are plenty of short treks for you, mostly clustered in the first one-third of the book. There are also a dozen moderate hikes and quite a few trail descriptions for streunous jaunts, all of these in the mountain areas. The descriptions of each trail is quite good and the driving desriptions to the trailheads is adequate (I haven't gotten lost yet from following their directions). I recommend this guide for everyone fortunate to hike in this beautiful locale.
A good resource........2000-08-14
Okay, here it is: if you're actually planning to get out and thoroughly explore the Trinity Alps, you want the most complete source of information, and refuse to buy more than one book, check out Wayne Moss's "The Trinity Alps Companion" instead. It's better organized, and more detailed in its road and trail descriptions. However, if you're like me, and enjoy "armchair hiking" almost as much as the real thing, you should really grab Mr. Bernstein's volume as well. Why, you say? Well, while Art's trail guide ain't perfect, it's more fun to read. His waggish sense of humor and eye for interesting if somewhat obscure facts (deer is the only native source of kosher food in the Alps, for example) spice up the trail narratives nicely. What the heck, if cost isn't an obstacle, buy both Moss's and Bernstein's guides. They complement each other nicely.

Customer Reviews:
I was an SAT coach.......2006-08-28
I used to work as a professional SAT Reading coach, making big bucks; the key issue for most of my students was vocabulary. Rather, VOCABULARY. (The other is slowing down and thinking as--not after--they read.)
Many questions on the SAT reading section amount to vocabulary questions.
What this means is that if you want to improve your SAT scores, if you are an ambitious student trying to get into one of the top schools, there is no two ways about it: you have to study vocabulary.
And study vocabulary.
And study vocabulary.
You cannot study simply one book, or even one series of books. You have to study several series.
However, the Princeton Review Word Smart series is the best that I know of. You should start here. Even if you think you have a good vocabulary, start here just to be on the safe side, and you can move on later.
You would recommend studying any of the vocabulary books that I've ever seen--but I recommend mastering the Word Smart series. These really are by far the best--if you are shopping here, it probably means you need these books.
If you were one of my students, your parents paying lots of money, I would force you to master these books, and I would ride you like a horse until you did. And then your scores would come up, your parents would love me and tell all their friends, and I would get more jobs and more money. That's how it works.
Anyway, these are certainly the best vocabulary books on the market. Even if you're studying vocabulary for some other reason, these are probably still the best.
Good luck!
GREAT FUN!.......2003-01-28
I am 11 years old and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, both as a story and as a no-stress way to learn new vocabulary. I am actually using the many words I learned in the book ~ it's easy because of the manner in which the book is written! I even enjoyed the quizzes at the end of each chapter ~ they were fun. I would save this book for after I had done my other work (I am a homeschooler) because I enjoyed this book so much. It was my inspiration to get finished with the other things so I could get back to this story!
The book is about three kids and a cat who have worldwide (and outer space!) adventures that lead them away from their real goal, which is to find Bridget's parents. You learn the new vocabulary from reading it in the context of their conversations. No memorizing lists! Great fun!
Great for readers who like to expand their vocabulary.......2002-06-24
I am a 7th grader of a middle school, and this is what I think of this outstanding book. This book had a very interesting way of teaching... Instead of a textbook, this book was made into a chapter book with several excellent stories about adventures with three kids and a gargantuan, black cat. The stories were well put together and the advanced words fitted in perfectly. I shared my ideas with my family, and we bought more books of the same series. I think younger kids should just read the book for the stories if the words are a bit too complicated for them to remember, but I'm sure that they will enjoy it. Readers will no longer be oblivious about grammer. As a matter of fact, they might even excel in the field of grammer and writing. Anyway, to me, the words in the book were extremely easy to understand, because they were so well placed, that the context clues made the definitions very clear and obvious. There was also a glossary in the back that gave the definitions to the bold-faced words. Unfortunately, the glossary did not have definitions to all of the words, but if you have a dictionary, you should have no problem. Overall, this was a fantastic book leaving me craving for more.
Excellent concept, but beware.......2001-03-23
I bought this book for my third grader and the vocabulary is a good level. My child already knows many of the words but is learning new ones from this book. However, parents should be made aware that they might consider some of the content inappropriate for their children. I personally do not care to enlighten my child on the concept of the 60s hippie culture and all that that entails. Fortunately for me, I glanced ahead while reading aloud and saw the word cohabitation so I was able to avoid a discussion of shacking up. The characters also flippantly use the name of the Christian diety, as in "Oh, my ...." As I said, it is a great concept but read WITH your child if you object to the moral values discussed above.
My elementary school age kids love this........2000-07-14
I bought this tape for my elementary age niece and two nephews. They have played this tape for weeks every night at bed time. They even fight over who gets to listen to it in the car. All of their vocabulary had sky rocketed. They are using "big" words properly and have no problem correcting the adults when we use them wrong. The way the new words are weaved into the stories give the kids the handle to truly understand what the word is, and what the correct usage is for any given situation. My sister and I are so impressed with this tape. We wish there were more of these.

advice from a former SAT coach.......2006-08-30
Good luck!
children need this book.......2001-07-22
Along with the first book, this book has the best new-word learning assistance per time spent. The only other way is to read copiously and you how much time that would take. The stories are almost fairy-tale like but I loved them. This is a must have. I bought a dozen for all my junior relatives.
A good book to read.......1999-11-24
I had been trying every book to increase my vocablulary until I found Word Smart. Then I purchased all the books and some of the cassetts. It is really helpful to my studyings. I rememberd 100 words in ten days and saw about 40 of them appearing in Romeo and Juliet with annotations. It is indeed a good book and I have introduced it to my good friend already.
