the boaters bible.......2007-09-27
I have been sailing for 20 years and I still go back to this book for info. I have the 1990 edition. I offer the last edition to the new owner of my boat and I saw that it improved and expend the info for sailboat. If you have to have one book onboard, this is the one.
Excellent Tome!.......2007-08-09
This book is everything it's says and more. I've read it cover to cover and am on the second run through! So much information I plan on keeping it as a reference guide for all my sailing questions.
Excellent Desk Reference.......2007-08-01
Every serious boater should have a copy of Chapman's on his or her desk. Incredible detail and in-depth material make this not only an excellent reference tome but also an informative read. Use as a reference or pick a chapter at random to brush up on your skills.
Chapman Piloting and Seamanship 65th edition.......2007-05-30
Hands down the finest manual on all aspects of power and sail I have seen or used. The last edtion I purchased was about 1980 (50th or so). So much has improvaed and all is both current and relavant must have info for all that ply water with any craft. One can not boat in any form without this manual- its a must have document!
Great book........2007-05-25
Good book, just wish they would update some of the pictures and information. But otherwise, it's a great basic book for new boaters.

Nautical standard.......2006-11-07
This book has long been a nautical standard among small craft owners. It is packed full of information for boat owners and those who love the sea.
"Front, Bow! Back, Stern!" .......2006-07-28
CHAPMAN'S PILOTING AND SEAMANSHIP is one of the half-dozen or so "essential" technical texts that any sailor should own. Coming into it's 65th edition in September 2006, CHAPMAN'S is the only book that offers serious competition to THE ANNAPOLIS BOOK OF SEAMANSHIP as an overall guide to sailing fundamentals.
Unlike Rousmaniere's book however, CHAPMAN'S is just as applicable to power boating, and because it is updated much more frequently, it's information on changeable topics such as boating regulations and new technologies, among others, is far more current---CHAPMAN'S is in its 65th incarnation, ANNAPOLIS in its seven-year-old third version (Where's the Fourth Edition?).
Did I say "competition"? Actually, the two volumes complement each other, and both are absolutely crucial for the serious skipper.
a new look at chapmans .......2006-07-03
still one of the best books available, on small craft handling.
--- would prefer the older edition , as it was more portable !
and much of the new material will be dated before the year is out!
---this is a volumne at once , serious , and readable,
many an old trick , well preserved , well presented make it quite useful for nearly all navigational tasks,
did remark , a lot of typos , and was surprised , but then this is the cyber era !? so it goes !? --- a real tool !, however!
Chapman's a Bible for Boaters.......2006-03-02
Chapman's Piloting and Seamanship is required reading for anyone
involved with boating. The Coast Guard Auxiliary uses this book for a reference tool for their courses along with applicable CG Publication. The book is heavy though, get a soft bound edition if possible.
A MUST FOR NEW BOATERS AND A GOOD REFERENCE FOR ALL.......2005-06-20
I just replaced my 54th edition with the 64th. Much of it is the same but much has also changed in the past 16 years. If you are new to boating this book might literally save your life. If you're a seasoned skipper you'll find yourself using it for a reference more often than you'd imagine. Covers every thing you need to know for boating in either sail or power. This book is "the Boater's Bible". If for no other reason than learning the "rules of the waterway" Chapman's is worth it's weight in gold.

Developed in 1917 by pioneering small-craft enthusiast and Motor Boating magazine editor Charles F. Chapman, Chapman Piloting covers the gamut of information that both the fledgling boater and seasoned mariner need to know. The 62nd edition includes fully updated sections on navigation with satellite technology, procedures for emergencies, and maritime laws and regulations. In addition to the thorough chapters on boating basics, safety, the art of seamanship, waves and weather, piloting and navigation, electronic equipment, and the boating community, subjects are wonderfully illustrated, cross-referenced, and supplemented by a comprehensive glossary of boating terms. Without question, Chapman Piloting remains a standard text for boating schools and has long stood as a ready and dependable first mate in wheelhouses of powerboaters and sailboaters alike. --Byron Ricks

Experience is the Best Teacher. But Tuition Can Kill You!.......2004-03-23
I've been a profesional captain for over 30 years, and I still find myself going back to this book for a quick refresher on the Rules of the Road or a check on the working and breaking strengths for various moorings, ropes, chains, etc. If you were allowed only one reference book on boating, this one, in my opinion, would be the best choice. It has a wealth of practical information on virtually every 'basic' subject of importance to the mariner -- novice and professional alike -- and is completely free of controversy and error. With 64 printings under its belt, you can be sure you're getting the facts and figures straight.
There are indeed other very worthy books that cover individual aspects of boating (heavy weather seamanship, advanced navigation, etc.) in a more comprehensive manner, but none of these will offer more factual, accurate, or appropriate information for such a wide range of skill levels. We all know experience is the best teacher. But when the tuition can kill you, it pays to come to school prepared. In this regard, Chapman's has no equal.
complete guide to boating.......1999-11-06
I grew up with Chapman's and I still have it close at hand...the latest edition is exceptional. If you only have one boating book, this is the one you need.
common sense should prevail.......1998-12-29
I was talking with a cruise ship captain in Key West, and he brought up Chapman's guide to piloting. We were discussing rules of the road, ie, under sail has right of way over ships under power. Being the captain of a large cruise ship, he said, "Ask yourself, is it easier for a sailboat to come about to avoid a collision or is it easier for a large ocean liner to stop before he hits you?" Therein lies the true wisdom of rules of the road: the bigger vessel will win every time. If your boat is easier to handle and can get out of the way sooner, be polite and make the first move long before it becomes an issue. Although Chapman's is the authority on rules of the road, common sense should prevail when rules come in conflict.
An excellent update of a classic reference.......1998-11-20
The quality of presentation of topics of interest to boaters is excellent. Good illustrations and clear explantions typify this latest edition. The sections on boat handling and navigation alone are well worth the price.
Excellent book for recreational boaters.......1998-08-24
This is an excellent book for all boaters. As a comercal captain, I found this book as an excellent refrence book for all general boating information. It does lack the more advanced information, but this information is generally not needed for a recreational pleasure boater

A good basic guide.......2007-09-28
This is a good basic guide to RC helicopters. Because of its age it has little information specific to electric helicopters so it is more useful to those running nitro helis. But even for electric fliers it has good basic info on setup and flight but don't expect too much.
Out of date and superficial.......2007-03-16
The book is a very basic guide. I was dissapointed regarding the level of information - very basic, and the dated nature of the information. The book has not been updated since it's first printing and it is way out of date. Only the cover has been re-done to give the impression that it is much newer than it acutally is.
Not Recomended.
more needed.......2005-12-20
good book for the most part. however, despite it being reprinted in '04, it is really lacking in up-to-date info for anyone considering electric helis as an entrypoint to the hobby. also, the section on flight simulators is woefully inadequate and in no way reflects what is available today (eg G3, XTR etc).
both these two areas have come along in leaps and bounds in the last few years and this book would be more complete if the info were up-to-date. The existence of high-quality simulators with extrememly advanced physics can drastically cut the entry cost for a beginner (i'm talking from experience!) which is an important factor when considering whether or not to take the plunge. that said, it still makes a good read and explains a lot.
for those interested in the electric-path here's the latest beginner's guide: http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=439635
A real guide for the beginner.......2005-08-14
The best thing about this book is that it is really a guide - it gives you all the information you need from the basics, through choosing your first helicopter model to flying and repairing it. After reading it you will feel you know something about this great hobby and be ready to get into it. Plus it's written in understandable and entertaining style so even if you know something about the topic you won't be bored to read about it.
The only drawback is the price - 26 dollars for tiny paperback with only black and white pictures is bit too much, so after you open the package you may think you wasted your money. But only until you start to read it. The text is worth the the price for sure.
New and Improved and a Must-Have.......2005-05-20
Papillon's book has been revised substantially, but even the old one was a keeper. The new one has more information and less of the risible Anglicisms that peppered the text of the previous edition.
Nick Papillon, an Englishman with a French name (meaning "butterfly," hilarious for someone so involved in model helicopters) has a finely developed sense of what we hobbyists want from a book like this one, and he knows what to leave out, too. Here in San Francisco we have a club, the Flying Goobers, that meets monthly--and in the summer, weekly--at Baker Beach and I would say about forty per cent of our members already own one or both of Nick's handbooks. Sometimes the air is awash with the sound of seagulls and the hovering buzz of our RCs. Indeed sometimes we adjourn somewhere else when the air is too filled with static, etc., too many speedboats patrolling the Bay seem to such the energy right out of the controls. Feels like earthquake weather.
If you want to know about aerobatics, beyond your simple push-pull, up-down "flight patterns," he's got it all down in language that is fairly easy to understand even for the tyro. His chapter, "After the Crash," while sobering enough, is one of those classic, stop feeling sorry for yourself and get out there and do it again sort of pep talks. When I started I didn't know the difference between a transmitter and a receiver, they'd call me the "late great Johnny Ace" with a sneer. Now the shoe is on the other foot as I explain to the newbies why lithium is cheaper in the long run, et cetera, all knowledge I got either from fellow Goobers or from pal Nick's rc handbook.
Customer Reviews:
OK, but there's better books out there.......2002-10-20
Nick's book is fine. Nothing is inaccurate, but it is a bit dated, and euro-centric. (There are some things about flying that are different between UK & US, like radio frequencies, fuel nitro ratios, etc.) [...]
A Good Resource.......2002-07-11
As I'm just entering the sport of radio-controlled helicopters, Nick Papillon's book has been a very nice resource to have. He begins with choosing a helicopter and goes right through introductions to aerobatics, and covers a large amount in between.
Although being English, Papillon has a few different names for things than we are used to in the States. Besides these occasional words, he is very easy to read, and he does a good job of explaining complex topics. I found his chapters on setting up the helicopter to be very useful, and his explanation of setting the gyro correctly were better than the instructions that I received with the component. He is thorough in his explanations, and covers enough material that you could go from kit to flying all on his book alone. And, should you crash your heli, he even tells you what to look for in diagnosing damage, and how to fix it.
After each flight, I consult Papillon to see what I can do to correct slight problems in flying. I was hovering by my third tank of gas, and I think Papillon is a large reason for it.
The best out there for setting up and flying........2000-04-13
If your looking for a guide to get you started, you can't go wrong with this book. All of the sections are clearly written and logically ordered so you can get started faster and easier.

Customer Reviews:
Still wading through, but it doesn't look good!.......2005-01-26
I initially gave this book the above 2 stars when I was still thinking I would finish reading it. I believed that there might be something good to be found here if I pressed on. Was I wrong. Needs a much lower rating that 1 star but can't give it or change it. The subtitle reads "101 mistakes you can't afford to make..." If it were about writing, the author breaks all 101 and then looks for some more to trample on.
The chief premise of Ms. Nicholson, is that your coloration plays the important roll in what will look good on you. OK. Sounds valid enough. However, when the author gives example of skin tone by "name dropping" famous people (10-15 per type) as having such and such a color type, we have just crossed the line to ludicrous. These may in fact be people the author has worked with, "name dropping", trying to impress or prove qualifications, perhaps not. However the examples given, presumably as an instructional guide, are a mish-mosh of famous people of different races all lumped into the same class of color characteristic or "clarity" as the author puts it. Aside from the fact that it is hard to imagine 3 people of origins african, european, and mediteranian having the same color type, the way it is presented is absurd.
Color type defined in the Author's own words:
You are "contrast color type" if your hair color is brown to black. (so far so good) "your skin tone ranges from clear ivory, clear camel, and clear olive to dark brown. "
The author then goes on and gives examples of people of this type. "Robert De Niro, Colin Powell, Ben Affleck, and Elvis."
Isn't that helpfull? Wait, it gets better.
You are a "Light- Bright color type" if "your natural hair color is golden blond to black, (but not red)." Examples of these include "Tiger Woods, Tom Brokaw, Pete Sampras, and Ricky Martin"
You are a "Gentle color type" if you resemble "Peter Jennings, Kobe Bryant, Matt Damon or Robin Williams." "Your natural hair color is blond to black and includes some redheads."
You are a "Muted color type" if you can compare yourself with "Micheal Jordan, JFK, or Elton John." "Natural hair color ranges from blonde to black and includes some red heads."
Wasn't that helpful? If not, the author suggests you hold up colors to your face in a mirror and the ones that look good are your colors and will define your type. That is the extent the author takes to explain and demonstrate her primary premise of the book. If you find this helpful and can now determine your own color type by this alone, (you will get no more) then by all means, get the book. However for the rest of you, it only gets worse.
The book is disorganized, and often times non-sensical. For some apparent reason, she feels that simply stating a point is not enough; it must be made stronger by increasing or decreasing the font size or adding or subtracting bold to increase her meaning. Great. Once, maybe twice. However, on one page alone I count different 5 instances. The text is full of the "technique". Comes off as annoying and amaturish.
Even with bad books, I tend to finish them, giving the author the benefit of the doubt and trying to see their point. I gave up 1/3 way through here with no regrets. Pure drivel, badly formated. Dis-organized and dis-jointed with little or no foundation or substantiation.
The author tries to pass herself off as an expert and says she gets paid to help famous and powerful people get the right look. They seems to have money to waste.
Since Amazon does not show it, her back cover photo can be described as this:
Head shot with companion in background. Presumably a candid photo. (in limo?) Dyed black hair with pasty "gothic" syle makeup. Face overly illuminated by the camera flash, partially (and perhaps mercifully) obscured by black fur of some sort. (my personal view would be to keep from being identified for the crime of authoring this book in a police lineup.) Photo is in fact, so vaugue that it is hard to determine what you are initially looking at. Much like the text. If that is the look she selects for herself for her book cover, can her advice for you be any better? Save your money. There are far better offerings out there.
awesome advice.......2004-01-14
I have read several other books on clothing and this is one of the best. Unequivocally a keeper. I always wondered why some clothes looked outstanding on me and others made me look like I just got hit by a truck. I have the answer now and will be sure to fill my closet with clothes that flatter my skincolor and tone. Also good advice on classic clothes. Read it a few times and practice! Good Luck
