Education and Enjoyment.......1999-06-21
I bought this book, because I desire a through knowledge of bears, their life, their existance. Reading this book has opened my my eyes to more than I ever thought there was to learn. I even bought a map so that I could see the areas he describes. If all books about grizzles and bears are this enjoyable, I have alot of reading to do. I now have a new found respect and admiration for the grizzly.
Talking bear is easy to learn!.......1998-07-08
"Learning to Talk Bear", by Roland Cheek is a must read for anyone interested in the current state of affair of the American Grizzly. Cheek combines his vast outdoor experience as an outfitter in Montana with solid research to provide a thorougly readable and enjoyable book. His main focus in the book is for the reader to walk away with a thorough understanding of grizzly behavior and the complex issues that threaten their existence This is not a book about grizzly attacks, although Cheek does examine several in attempts to understand possible causes of those incidents. It is an exciting book that combines research, suspense and good story-telling to help the reader understand Grizzly behavior. It reminded me of two other books, John McPhee's "Coming into the Country" about Alaska, and Sebastian Junger's "The Perfect Storm." I read "Learning to Talk Bear" while vacationing in Yellowstone and felt much more in tune while in the backyard of "Ursus arctos horribilis"!
Learn bear body language.......1997-11-23
Bear fear is a given with most people . . so they do what they can to avoid bears and thereby cheat themselves out of wilderness experiences of the kind that may not be able to be had in the next century. Roland Cheek's book goes a long way in the explanation of the necessary dance people will have to learn to do with animals in order for the animals to survive. His book is entertaining, wise and up to date. It is a book that any person who is going to venture into bear country would be wise to digest. There are good stories and illustrations of bear encounters that turned out fine . . . after all the author is still here.

Good Quantitative Breakdown Of Offense.......2007-04-29
Brian Billick did the research and wrote this back in the mid to late 1990's. Now he is viewed as more of a defensive genius by some fans due to his tenure with the Baltimore Ravens. Those with longer memories however will remember in the 1990's he was viewed as an offensive genius while he was offensive coordinator for the Vikings. During his years there they put up team record numbers between 1994-1998 on offense and were a consistent winning team going 15-1 one year.
Billick apparently was among the first in the NFL to embrace computers and the use of more statistical information to help plan games. This is noted in John Feinstein's excellent book Next Man Up.
In "Developing an Offensive Game Plan" Billick statistically breaks down the average number of plays in an NFL game (64 for example). Then he further breaks them down into situational categories such as 1st and 10, 2nd and long, 2nd and medium, 3rd and long, 3rd and medium, 3rd and short, etc. and determines how many plays fall into each category. This helps determine how much offense and play types you need for each situational category in order to have a healthy run pass balance and not have too many tendencies.
I thought the book was a little dry and hard to read in places but I will still give it 5 stars for breaking new ground. It shows how coaches approach the game which is quite different from the average fans view. It would have been better with some more concrete play type examples and not just data...but I still got a lot out of the book.
Football fans might not get much out of it. I suspect the book is written for coaches and that seems to be the target audience. Even judging by one of the comments below it is more for advanced high school programs, college programs, and up.
Developing an Offensive Game Plan.......2007-03-08
Excellent book. A must have for any offensive coach. Tremendous
Not for High School.......2006-05-12
This is a well written book but a little too much information for a High School Football Team. This book is more for the college level or up. High school coaches will find a lot of useful information in it. Just do not try to use it all because you will go nuts.
I recommend it.
True Genius Finally Found.......2005-10-28
Truly a genius. I have to disagree with the earlier review. This is the perfect book for a flag football coach or junior tackle. Beyond that the players know more than is in this book.
The chapter on how to get your linebacker out of a murder charge is especially helpful.
Well, it certainly is "offensive"..........2005-10-28
Reading a book by Brian Billick on designing an offense is like asking Ray Lewis what it's like to have a clean conscience. Is that Tony Banks on the cover? Are you f'n kidding me?

Signing is fun!.......2007-07-28
Very good book! It is simple and has full pictures showing exactly how to do the signs. It has really helped me to communicate with my deaf friend. The only dissapointment is that I paid like $2.50 for it and when I got it it was stamped with a .59 cent price tag! Shipping was like $3.99 and the envelope was marked like $1.89. If I didn't like the book so much I would feel a little cheated.
Wonderful book for families!.......2004-01-13
We borrowed this book from the library and my 5 year old is thrilled with how many of the signs she already knows, and is able to look up the new signs she wants to learn, even though she is still in a pre-reading stage. The pictures introduce the signs and make it exciting for her to use. Now my 5 year-old is teaching our 2 year-old new signs.
I have several other sign language books including a college course workbook. Mickey Flodin does great with the illustrations and grouping signs in logical easy to use patterns.
We have been teaching our children sign language in bits and spurts since our oldest (now 5 years) was 6 months old. By her 1st birthday she had a vocabulary of about 10-15 signs, but was already speaking over 100 words in sentences. She never had any frustration with not being able to communicate with us.
Our 2 year old has taken longer to speak, but we haven't used as much sign language with her. I am convinced it has been more frustrating for her not being able to communicate with us, and has delayed her speach development.
This has definitely been a family project, and has given us new ways to be close and express ourselves when "words" just aren't enough.

Love this set.......2007-10-18
I love this set. But, don't buy it if you have already bought Baby Sign Language Flash Cards: A 50-Card Deck plus Dear Friends card because they contain the same cards. Buy one or the other, they are great. I'm giving the other set to my MiL to use with my 5mo neice. Soon my daughter will be able to communicate with her cousin. I look forward to the day.
Lots of words.......2007-08-10
It is a very nice book, lot of words and ideas where to use those words
Sign, Sing and Play!.......2006-11-06
I just finished reading this wonderful little book. I am a big fan of Monta's first book and used signing with both my daughters. In reading "Sign, Sing and Play" it was great to know that my second daughter did a lot of the same things Monta's second child did when it came to signing... understanding signs, but not signing back to me. Now that I've tried several of the games and songs with my baby, she's signing like crazy! Thank you, Monta!
This book offers ideas to make signing fun and engaging!.......2006-09-28
This book helped me to go beyond the basics of signing and start having some fun! My 11 month old daughter's signing has accelerated dramatically from many of Monta Briant's suggested activites. Excellent book!

Great Reference Tool!.......2007-08-02
This book is a wonderful, quick reference tool! While it is in black in white format, it is easy to follow. I recommend this book as a tool for adults- as the illustrations are not eye-catching to rope in children.
Very Straightforward and easy!.......2007-02-13
Its enjoyable to learn so much from this easy to use book!
good book for kids.......2006-11-03
Purchased this book for my child's class. Good, clear pictures of signs. Better than some other books I've bought.
EXCELLENT!.......2006-09-04
I had to buy a SECOND copy of this book because I couldn't get my first copy away from my then 3 year old. He's 4 now, and this book sits on his nightstand. He LOVES to look through the pictures and practice the signs.
Of all the books we have on ASL, these pictures are the easiest to follow.
I LOVE this book. The author did an EXCELLENT job!
Great for a family.......2006-04-18
This book is absolutely the best that I have come across for teaching the kids. The categories are well thought out and easy to use. The index in the back is also quite easy to use. I would recommend this book for anyone looking to get the basics-to carry on a conversation.

Customer Reviews:
Good intro to a traditional technique.......2005-07-14
This is, as the title promises, a very good foundation for any artist interested doing traditional egg tempera painting, or for any art lover who wants to know more about the medium itself. It covers everything from mixing gesso accoording to traditional recipes, to framing and care of the finished work. For me, though, that's the least of it.
First, it's an incredible reference on the tools and techniques of water gilding. It limits itself to gilding as it works with tempera painting and frames, but is exhaustive within that scope. It discusses everything from the laying the bole ground to burnishing, then tinting the finish. Although this emphasizes traditional tools and materials, the author isn't afraid to use modern aids, like rubber cement masks. By the way, anyone who wants to use scrapers to smooth the gesso ground, as this author suggests, should consult a woodworker's guide for directions on sharpening the scraper. A little extra effort up front makes a world of difference in the scraper's performance.
Second, it's a fascinating historical document. Although the book was written in the early 20th century, most of its recipes go back to medieval times, maybe earlier. Therein lies a potential problem, though. Back then people were a bit less careful about pigments like lead white and mercury-based vermilion. Since egg tempera doesn't keep well in wet form, the artist must use many pigments in their hazardous dry form. The practitioner should review the safety of pigments and techniques very carefully before trying the directions in this book.
Still, it's interesting to read about the daily practice of art, including the artist's relationship to a pigment supplier, from a time so different from our own. The recipes, too, have an antiquated sound. I'm not sure I've ever seen sandarac, for example, let alone the range of colors all identified as "vermilion."
This isn't just history, though. It needs some adjustment for modern safety and materials, but it's a very practical guide to everything there is to know about the many techniques in tempera painting.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Tempera..........2002-01-02
There are not many books available on tempera painting mainly because few artists these days have either the time or the patience to grind their own pigments and mix them into a binder. For anyone who does have such an interest egg tempera is a fascinating and beautiful medium to learn. Anyone who has ever tried to scrape off dried egg yolk from a plate will soon realize how incredibly durable a binder it makes for a painting medium. The Practice of Tempera Painting covers a lot of subjects in-depth. Everything from preparing the surface, pigment to egg to water ratios, discussions of various pigments to actual instructions for the traditional hatching and cross-hatching brushstroke technique is shown.
The only section readers today might want to supplement is reading up on a more up-to-date book on pigments. Many of the pigments discussed in Thompson's book, while still available, are now known to present health risks. Modern pigments that are safer and just as lightfast (in some cases even more lightfast) are now available that Thompson and painters of the 1930's didn't have. Other than that one caveat this book is a great introduction to egg tempera painting.
Invaluable Book!.......2000-08-15
This excellent introduction to egg tempera is invaluable to oil painters as well. Thompson's writing is filled with humor and wit, making the book very readable.
I was delighted to discover that, unlike so many books about painting techniques, Thompson's is clear and thorough without being a condescending "how to" manual. It also avoids being mired in footnotes and tedious tangential detail. It is obvious that he speaks from the perspectives of both painter and scholar. The only drawback is that the reproductions are in black and white, but as this was standard when the volume was written it is forgivable.
This book will prove informative for artists, teachers, and museum professionals (I am all three) who are in search of solid information on tempera painting. Look no further and enjoy the read!
