An eye opener.......2006-04-01
I enjoyed reading this book it tells the truth about the thugs that many Americans have idiolized simply because they play basketball.
The days of Larry Bird and Michael Jordan are long gone. Todays players are a bunch of immature perverts. Read this book if you want to know about the people you let your children idiolize.
They're no angels........2006-01-20
One of the consistent trends in modern American history is the progressive shrinking of the number of occupations in which those employed are exempt from public scrutiny. Used to be the President was above the fray, but Nixon and Watergate changed all that. Likewise, the fatherhood got tainted by the sex-abuse scandals starting in the 1980's. The occupation of NBA player has now succumbed to this trend, as books like these examine the seedy side of NBA life and its players.
Written by a veteran observer of the American professional sports scene, this book goes into gory detail to show how a very large number of current NBA athletes are out and out felons; rapists, shoplifters, wife-beaters, etc, etc... Names are named, along with details of various crimes committed by players at all positions on numerous NBA teams. As such, the book is quite-opening to the casual sports fan and to the American public at large. However, the book is lacking some ingredients. First, the style and substance of the book seems to indicate that this lawlessness has grown over time. Maybe it has, but a more likely explanation is that the press has gotten more agressive over time. Second, the book should have included something on treatment plans the NBA offers its players for various problems such as marriage counseling, substance abuse rehab, etc, etc... Third, it would have been nice for the book to not focus on such a small number of players: i.e. Ruben Patterson and Sam Mack. A lot of players have done illegal things, or even legal things that are not so nice; Wilt Chamberlain's 20,000 bedscores is not something a gentleman or civil society in general should be proud of. But overall, this is a good book. I recommend every parent to give this book to their son when he asks for the latest $100+ NBA jersey or b-ball shoes!
Interesting book with a few flaws.......2006-01-13
This book flows in an easy reading style, but the book apparently wasn't carefully proofread, because there are a number of misspellings and incorrect wordings. That sends a message that if you don't care, why should I. As for the complaint that professional athletes are getting the primadonna treatment without accountability for bad behavior, I can only withhold my payment for a ticket to the game as punishment. Another book I read points out: have you ever noticed that people often complain to the wrong person or persons about something they have the power to change or resolve. Only the industry can really do something to change the problem.
Highly questionable motives..........2005-12-22
This is a actual excerpt from the book "... there is nothing admirable or beautiful about today's NBA player: diamond studded ears, flesh plastered with offensive body tattoos, and nicknames like 'The Answer' and 'Big Dog.'"
Are you serious? Personal appearance is now a problem in the NBA as well? Bring back the white guys with the crew cuts!
Benedict has a agenda, and even went as far to exaggerate the skills of certain players that committed a crime. A whole two chapters were devoted to Sam Mack... who I forgot existed until I vaguely remembered a shooter that played for the Rockets. Noting that players like Jerry Stackhouse, Damon Stoudamire and Jason Richardson were all-stars when in fact none of them have ever made the team. Should I trust the rest of his facts he presents?
A book filled with problems, but no solutions.......2005-08-19
In reading the stories outlined in Out of Bounds, it becomes paintakingly obvious that Benedict is writing as a lawyer looking at the NBA, rather than someone who understands the NBA writing from a legal standpoint.
Benedict provides little commentary, but praises himself throughout the book for his detailed research and hard work. Above all, this is a book filled with stories about a handful of NBA players. Benedict tells the story (which he pieced together from court documents and eyewitness accounts), and not much else. He uncovers no new facts, resolves no cases, and does a lot of whining about preferential treatment. He seems not to know what else he wants to do from there.
Athletes and trouble with the law are nothing new. Benedict acts as if this is a new trend never before seen. He finds it hard to believe that such recklessness occurred during the days of "Bill Russell, Bill Bradley and Oscar Robertson." Why he chose those three players from different eras, I have no idea. I could point to him three players from this era who have also had no run-ins with the law. The fact is, players in the past were blatant alcoholics, womanizers and generally not good people. To say that athletes are worse in this day and age, without researching the past, is an insult to the reader. He also points to the days of the Magic-Bird rivalry, the NBA's Golden Age, as a perfect example of player conduct. He fails to realize the rampant use of cocaine in the NBA in the 80's, claiming several players' careers and young Len Bias' life.
In the end, the book is a one-sided account that was quickly put together to capitalize on the Kobe Bryant scandal. In the book's opening, he describes telling his assistant that they have 5 months to research and write this book, and that he had been approached to write about the NBA before, but refused until the Kobe Bryant scandal arose.
NBA players are not angels, and the book does a good job of reminding us of that. But it could have been so much more.

Not for the occasional repair guy. .......2007-09-21
This is a great book if you need theory, plumbing codes, etc. If you want to know how to make your new p-trap fit your old p-trap, then you will be very disappointed. No DIY tricks here. No inside secrets on parts compatibility and replacements. This book is just hard core plumbing design and install, etc,,, and not repair parts oriented which is the root cause of most guys looking for a book like this. Plumbing repair is all about parts, PARTS, parts, and this is not the book for that. The cover of the book even says "...planning and installing....", not repair! It seems to be a great book, seriously,,, it just is not the magic pill I wanted. Seems there are no magic pill books,,,, rats! By the way, I think the used book I bought is stolen from Parma Ohio Library. hmmmm?
A very highly recommended instructional reference manual.......2007-02-04

Not the book if you are plumbing your own house.......2003-03-04
I'm building my own house and bought this book as a plumbing reference. It has pretty much sat on the shelf. It is more oriented toward the full time plumber who is doing multiple types of jobs. Too much time spent on the many fascets of plumbing and too little time spent on how it applies to doing a residential job.
Instead I'd recommend "Complete Home Plumbing" by Sunset books. That book has been my first read when a question comes up.
A plumbing detail lover's dream.......2001-10-05
I'm a man the thrives on detailed information. And I salute this Howard Massey for producing this first-rate plumbing book! Beware, this is not a book for weekend Joe looking to learn how to replace a faucet washer. Even if your not in the plumbing trade, but are serious about learning to understand and design plumbing service for your home or business, you have found the book you want.
So many technical books paint their subject with such broad brush strokes that, after reading the book, the reader is left to discover for themselves (as in "the hard way") what necessary detail was omitted. Not this book. It's complete, well organized, well indexed, and riddled with excellent photographs and illustrations.
While the book is entirely in in black and white, the author very effectively used an artist with a computer to expertly draw most of the illustrations. The fidelity of the graphics is worthy of a graphic arts how-to book.
To give you a sense of how thorough and complete this book is, I'll describe the problem I recently used it to understand and solve. A family friend, who is a veterinarian, recently mortgaged everything to buy her own animal hospital. As soon as she bought is the drains started backing up. Roto-Rooter started coming monthly to remove pet hair from the sewer pipes. I went to the "Plumbers Handbook" and it not only had a section on trapping hair, it even had a topic specific to the control of hair generated by kennels and animal care facilities!
What a super book!
Plumbing Concepts - Residential and Small Commercial.......2001-09-29
Excellent book for designers and architects to use for residential and small commerical structures. Provides the Plumbers point of view on necessary design elements for layout of fixtures, pipes, etc.
Provides excellent explanation on how to read a plumbing design layout and superb insight in to the plumbing codes. Provides the details that will allow a designer or architect to adequately communicate with plumbing contractors.
Good overview for architects/designers and a very useful study guide for plumbers and plumbing contractors.

This book was a pleasure to find on Amazon. The authors cover all of the essential parts of a machine shop in a way that's really easy to read and understand. The book is an excellent reference.

I rate this book: 5 stars
This is a great book, terrific colors, technique, and over all extremely inspirational. Leaves the wannabe artist panting for more....However, the only thing that I think Julie Collins should have added was the actual designs for her gorgeous to have been projects for the novice artist. Other than THAT, it is truly a work of art, a masterpiece.
It was a pleasure leaving my feedback for this wonderful book.
Review: Painting Flowers with Impact.......2005-10-11
I found Painting Flowers with Impact to be a stunning presentation of beautiful paintings shown against pristine white pages. This made for a very attractive book but is quite unhelpful if you are struggling with the problem of which background to choose.
It was truly inspirational with enough demonstrations to be helpful I liked her advice on materials colours and composition also good advice on painting white flowers, which I needed. I also found the section on painting leaves very helpful.
I have looked for other books by this author, hoping she is intending a further book covering more about how to paint backgrounds of flowers with impact. She included much information about painting on vellum, which seems to warrant a book all of its own: the space this discussion takes up may have been better used explaining how to paint flowers with impact against a background.
It must have taken a long time to paint all the subjects for this lovely book and I look forward to happily trying out her methods. and look forward to any other painting book she produces. I heartily recommend this book.
