The nose knows, says Lyall Watson, and in Jacobson's Organ, he sets out to prove that a humble, often overlooked set of nasal pits helps us decide whom to hit on, and whom to hit. First identified in 1811 by Danish anatomist Ludwig Levin Jacobson, the vomeronasal organ has been implicated in the reception of pheromones, those ephemeral chemical signals animals use to communicate nonverbally.
Watson organizes his thesis around the seven broad classes of smells identified by pioneering naturalist Carolus Linnaeus: floral, goatish, musky, foul, nauseating, spicy, and garlicky. In each section, Watson presents evidence of a surprising and unacknowledged role of smell and pheromones in human life. Is it possible that first impressions are the result of chemical signals? Watson thinks so, and also that pair-bonding, fistfights, love of offspring, and memories may have more to do with our humble nose than we think. In what is bound to be one of his more controversial stretches, Watson implicates nasal plastic surgery in postoperative mood changes:
Every time a surgeon slices away at a nasal septum in the name of fashion or vanity, both sides of Jacobson's organ are at risk of being damaged or even removed entirely, without thought for the consequences.... If you are considering cosmetic surgery on your nose, know that it could deprive you of the very things in life which having a new, cute, little button nose were supposed to improve.
Jacobson's Organ is full of Watson's pithy opinions and conjectures. Some are supported by science, some are not. But as we learn more about the role of the vomeronasal structures in human chemical communication, it becomes clear that a nosey approach is nothing to sneeze at. --Therese Littleton
Book Description
According to naturalist and bestselling author Lyall Watson, we all possess an anatomical feature that could be one of the most important keys to unraveling the mysteries of the human mind. Two tiny pits located inside the nostril, long thought to be vestigial, Jacobson's Organ may in fact be an intrinsic part of our mammalian senses. In this entertaining and informative book, Watson rescues our most underappreciated sense from obscurity. He brings to light new evidence that this evolutionary apparatus, discovered in 1811, is the pheromonal mechanism that triggers the areas of the brain affecting awareness, emotion, and sexual behavior. This highly refined sense can help us determine everything from the suitability of potential mates to identifying offspring, and offers insight into how, why, and what we remember.
Filled with surprising and delightful anecdotes, Jacobson's Organ sniffs out the scientific truths behind a wide range of phenomena and behaviors in the plant, animal, and human worlds. "In his spirited ode to the nose, Watson urges us to acknowledge and celebrate the power and influence of the sense of smell" (Boston Herald).

Sense and Nonsense.......2004-07-26
I first became aware of this book while listening to an NPR interview with Lyall Watson some years ago; I didn't in fact know that it was Watson at the time, and if I did, I probably wouldn't have listened. My prior experience with Watson hgad been via his book "Supernature", and engaging but overall worthless collection of nonsensical attempts to find (for example) a scientific basis for ESP. Still, his discussion of Jacobson's organ did pique my interest, so when a copy of the book came my way at a discount price I bought it.
Like most of Watson's writing it's a colleciton of science and speculation. The science runs the gamut from respectable to doubtful, and the speculation, from informed to nonsensical. Right off the bat I was annoyed by Watson's misuse of terms, referring to things like "synasthesia" in fish. He gleefully cites examples in the animal kingdom and then glibly assumes that their are identical functions in humans. And I find myself occasionally annoyed by his tendency to skip and jump around from topic to topic without giving a clear sense of the context for a particular phenomenon.
As a piece of entertainment for the fan of "light" science it's a very good book; it has a great deal of appeal for those who enjoy, say, "Discover" magazine. Facts are reeled off and assertions are made without any attmpt to provide an overall narrative, or an evolutionary context. Narrative threads selcom extend beyond a couple of paragraphs. You're reading about the discovery of some particular olfactory sense in kittens and then suddenly you're off on a thread about the role of pheremones in plant signaling.
So for the casual reader looking for entertainment rather than elucidation, yes, four stars for style. For the reader looking for explanation and narrative, one star.
Overall,
If we could talk with the animals..........2003-02-04
Although I am a non-scientific type, I am intrigued by this book. It is surprising that there has been little research about Jacobson's Organ until recently. Although it was first identified in the 18th century, its existence has only been studied clinically since the early 1990s. This sense organ, which consists of two small pits inside the nasal passages, works in combination with what we traditionally understand as our sense of smell. Instead of registering the odors we typically associate with smell, however, Jacobson's Organ functions as our "sixth sense" deciphering odorless chemical pheromones that are sent and received by a variety of plants and animals. These chemical messages may trigger sexual arousal, panic, fear, or an immediate dislike or attaction to someone you just met. The book is filled with interesting examples of how this organ and pheromones function in different species. Certain trees and plants are shown to communicate with each other by these signals. The author also suggests that schizophrenia, in which sufferers sometimes experience heightened sensitivity to another's feelings, may be related to disfunction with Jacobson's Organ. Instead of being out of touch with reality, they sense reality too much and are overwhelmed. This book will make you think of the people and places that gave you a sense of well-being. It may be that the chemical signals have much more to do about our perceptions of these than we have ever imagined.
Excellent read, but very "easy" at the same time........2003-01-20
This is the softest of science writing. It's written for a high school level, at best -- or, if you prefer a different analogy, it's written like a 'Discovery' or 'Popular Science' essay. Easy, accessible, and glossy glossy glossy. It also wanders something fierce, let me tell you. The author seems to have a point... but there's no tight focus, no direction. One of the New York Times reviewers said the book was like a "county fair" -- and I'm not sure that's a compliment! However, if you can be patient with the wandering, the lack of focus, and the gloss... wow! Great information, humorously presented, packed with bizarre trivia and some pretty new-to-me ideas. I would definitely recommend this book for readability and content.
The Nose.......2002-09-27
Smell is the Cinderella of senses. We never seriously contemplate what it would be like - to live in a world without smells. Loss of sight or hearing is recognized as a handicap, a disease, a tragedy; loss of smell does not even have a name. Moreover, smells do not have their own vocabulary almost in any known language - whatever name you assign to a smell, it is borrowed either from taste (sweet, sour, spicy) or touch (sharp, mellow). We, at least during the last 150 years or so, are very uncomfortable about the fact that we, as a species, smell. And yet man is one of the smelliest animals around, with lots of glands and pores with evidently no other functions other than producing smelly secretions - the fact we are desperately trying to hide through washing, bathing and a variety of artificial perfumes borrowed from other living creatures, both plants and animals.
The main premise of Watson's book is that most mammals, including humans, in fact possess two olfactory systems. The first works through the nose; its functions are processed by the brain in the regular way. The second works through the mysterious Jacobson's organ, and is connected directly to subliminal, subconscious parts of the brain, making us feel things we cannot account for. ... attraction, premonitions, foresight, the phenomenon of déjà vu, irrational dislike and many other almost paranormal things seem to be explained by the workings of Jacobson's organ. There are even theories (as recounted in this book, they seem very convincing) that some severe mental disorders such as schizophrenia may be explained by the mix-up in the wiring of the two olfactory systems. When the stimuli from Jacobson's organ are somehow erroneously conveyed to the cortical, "conscious" areas of the brain, a person experiences things he cannot reasonably explain; but the brain tries to explain everything at all costs, and that is what we perceive as madness.
Without the sense of smell, and especially without Jacobson's organ, many animals cannot live at all - they depend on their olfactory abilities for moving, hunting, mating, detecting danger and a number of other everyday tasks. Man has created a relatively sterile universe, and it seems that we could do without the fifth sense; however, research suggests that malfunctions of olfactory system in humans result in severe disorientation, depressions and suicidal moods.
Watson tells his controversial story vividly and fluently. There are gaps, and sometimes the transition from dry experimental data to wild speculations (which the author, to his credit, is not trying to disguise as solid knowledge) is too abrupt. In the end, it is not quite clear which point the author was trying to make. In fact, there are several; it was obviously difficult for Watson to concentrate on one of them and to press it more persistently; it is clearly no less difficult for the reader to decide, what, after all, was the main idea of the book. I am not saying that it is not clear; I am just implying that it could be a little more clear.
Most parts of the book are nevertheless a fascinating read, and the marvellously unobtrusive layout with floral design adds to the story's charm.
A neat idea.......2002-04-09
A neat idea. Watson's clear and perceptive review on the nature of smell takes readers into a world that is probably, for most of us, unexplored. But I encourage you to take Watson's journey about how we relate to each other and the animate world, and how it relates to itself-by smell, Watson says. The release or presence of pheromones may dictate our behavior more than we're cognizant of certainly more than we'd probably like to know. Our Jacobson's Organ, located at the top of our nostrils, often guides how we act, for better or worse, unconsciously or not.
Imagine: a baby's head produces natural endorphins in those who smell it. Suddenly the behavior of parents around their newborn takes on a new perspective.
I question the validity of Watson's view. It SEEMS plausible without knowing much about this field, but it sure was a quality read.

Customer Reviews:
One of the Best.......2007-10-10
This book features an interesting format of an ongoing progression of training and running advice in conjunction with logs in which you record your training experiences. In a sense, this book is written by two expert coaches. Expert coach 1 is Joe Henderson whose knowledge of running and writing skills provide excellent and plainly-stated advice on how to progress through the training process and how to manage the day of the big race. Expert coach 2 is you, even if you are a novice runner approaching your first marathon (as I was). The process of training for and running a marathon is a superb learning experience if you put your mind to getting the most from it. By completing the logs, you will come to understand what works best for you and how best to apply your experience. Working with the book was much like working with a knowledgeable coach who cared and listened. I read several other marathon books preparing for my first marathon and realized that I had figured much of the advice in those books on my own during training runs (e.g., don't make a decision while running an uphill stretch). The advice on phantom injuries and illnesses was excellent and is a topic not well covered in most books (my worsening cold on the day of the race disappeared before I reached mile 1). The training plans are oriented to three levels of runners, novice, experienced, and excellent and the programs are straightforward and sound. Unless you really want to enroll at the School of Marathon Running Made Complicated, I think you will find this book one of the best guides for learning about yourself and meeting your goals during the marathon experience.
Interesting, but not very useful.......2006-08-22
This book contains a number of interesting meditations and reflections on marathon running. And viewed as such, it's a nice book to have. But the substantive guidlines on how to train are poorly lacking. There are some general guidlines and a few charts you can use to chart your progress, but there is little beyond that (e.g., about nutrition).
Marathon Rookie.......2006-02-24
I enjoyed this book. Like I imagine a lot of improving runners, I have purchased several books with various training schedules as well as Runners World. I got this book mid-training, so did not use its best feature, the runners log. Lots of good advice.

Book Description
The Sound of Music endeared Georg von Trapp (1880–1947) and his singing family to the world, and it also showed us how desperately the Nazis wanted Captain von Trapp for their navy. In To the Last Salute we learn why. Trapp’s own story of his exploits as a submarine commander during the First World War is as exciting as it is instructive, bringing to stirring life a little-known chapter in the naval history of that war.
In his many guises Trapp describes life as captain of Austro-Hungarian U-boats in the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, emerging by turn as the Imperial Austrian naval officer, the witty observer of international politics, and the indefatigable and ultimately heartbroken patriot opposing the Allied enemy. He relates deadly duels with submarine sweepers, narrow escapes and excruciatingly close calls, and the spectacular sinking of cargo and war ships—all the while maintaining a keen sense of the camaraderie of seamen from every corner of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. A picture of a lost time, a portrait of a remarkable character, a window on early submarine warfare: Trapp’s story, in English for the first time, offers a rare combination of human interest, historical insight, and true life-and-death adventure.
Customer Reviews:
U-boats and insights into the geopolitical situation of Austro-Hungary in WWI. .......2007-10-09
This is reasonably light read broken into bite-size chapters covering a variety of experiences surrounding the author's service as a WWI Austrian U-boat captain, the boat technologies of the time and the everyday impact of the politics as Austria's empire unraveled. Austria's relationship with it's wealthy and larger German ally is seen from another perspective as well as the polyglot nature of the many ethnic groups belonging to and participating in the Austrian war effort. A fine military account from the man responsible for "The Sound of Music."
An engaging and moving memoir of life in the Austrian Navy.......2007-09-26
To the Last Salute is Georg Ritter von Trapp's memoir of commanding a U-boat in the Austrian Navy during World War I. While his style of writing does take some getting used to, von Trapp provides an engaging and suspenseful tale of life on a primitive submarine during an oft-neglected period of military history. The book also gives us an insight into von Trapp as a man, more insight than one finds in other books on the life of his famous family. His accounts of the horrors of war and the loss of his beloved navy at the end of the war are especially moving. For those interested in von Trapp, the Austrian Navy, World War I, and the history of submarine warfare, the book will be especially useful; anyone interested in the story of an intriguing, thoughtful, and courageous man will enjoy the chronicle of von Trapp's adventures as well.
Interesting History of the True Life "Captain" from the 'Sound of Music'........2007-08-22
Captain Georg von Trapp's Memoirs were published in Austria in German in the 1930's. One of his Grandaughters (an offspring of one of the real life von Trapp Family Singers)has translated her famous ancestor's work into English and now we can all see why the Evil Nazi's were so set on getting "The Captain" into their Navy when they took over Austria.
The work is very short and von Trapp has a matter of fact writing style similar to that of U.S. counterpart Gene Fluckey in his memoir of the USS Barb. Unlike Fluckey however von Trapp had to go to war in an antequated obsolete gasoline powered Austrian U-boat which was barely a step above the Turtle or the Hunley. A german U boat Captain told him upon going inside the ship that he "was lucky to be Alive". In addition he had to deal with a multinational crew that grew more restless as the war went on and their countries began to break away from the Hapsburg yoke.
The memoir is a good glimpse of a theatre of WWI which is barely mentioned, the Naval War in the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. Very little has been written of the War at sea between the Austrian navy on one side and the Italians and the French on the other. Most I have seen have dealt with the Royal Navy in the Dardanelles.
The book also begins with some von Trapp Family background and reveals many interesting facts such as the Captain's first wife was English and many of 'the children' were a lot older than 'sixteen going on seventeen' when they escaped Austria. Sadly when the Captain died of lung cancer in 1947 it may have been related to all of the gas fumes he inhaled on the poorly ventilated u boat during the war.
Finally!.......2007-08-08
I've wished for this book to be translated into English for a very long time! It was worth the wait.
I've always wanted to know more about Captain von Trapp, in his own words and this book is as close as I am going to get. It did not disappoint as it provided a window to see the Captain, the man.
I could not help but believe this book was more a compilation from a journal he may have kept. I also could not help but believe, if not for his modesty, there was so much more he could have shared.
Perhaps, without realizing it, he showed us many sides, least of which were his tender and compassionate side. How many military captains do you know would allow a rescued kitten to live on board his submarine?
I gave this book five stars, not so much for literary greatess as for the enjoyment received from reading it and having a few more questions answered.
It should be enjoyed by all Sound of Music fans and I believe those interested in history will enjoy it as well. Even though I knew the outcome, I could not help but hold my breath as he told of daring escapades while captaining his u-boats. I found myself, while reading about his experiences, thinking of the movie, K-9, The Widowmaker.
My only complaint, it was only 188 pages log. :-(
Excellent to see in an english translation.......2007-06-27
I had known of this book for many years, and had even thought about seeing if a publisher would be willing to entertain a translation. It was wonderful to see a member of the family lead the effort and have a copy back in print and in english after too many years out of print. It is a wonderful story of a patriotic naval officer, of a now absent navy tell of his adventures as the most successful captain of the Austro-Hungarian Navy. His work with his crew (from all over the empire) dealing with bureaucratic officers, sinking ships in an old sub, that his German peers recommended not taking to sea (they thought it unseaworthy and an antique), and then further adventures in a French sub, sunk then raised to strike again against them is intersting. Those who have read Lowell Thomas' account, or Edwyn Gray's books on the German WW1 submarine service will find this a very different tale and one worth comparing to other efforts.
For those who wondered where the Captain in the von Trapp family singers came from this fills in a void covering elements of his older children and first wife. Through his first wife, he was related to the inventor of the modern torpedo, who had set up a factory in Austra-Hungary before WW1.
The book is well written and reads quickly, and tells the tale of a dedicated and talented patriot in an prior phase of his life, which was later known to the world in song and story.

Customer Reviews:
Is a bad Tuchman still worth reading?.......2007-05-05
A tour guide at Williamsburg recommended this as 'essential' reading and since I had enjoyed Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" I was ready for a good book. Into the fourth page describing intricate and, to me, unimportant interrelationships of the Danish royal family I came to the conclusion that at some point in this book's production Tuchman just gave up. So I did to. The chunk I did read was very well researched but I don't need to read a summary of everything Tuchman read in researching this book. The choppy writing and, most importantly, lack of editing wore me out. Is a bad Tuchman worth reading? If you need to know every angle about the American Revolutuion the answer may be 'yes.' But, for me, the answer is 'no', not when there are so many other good books out there.
An outstanding historian.......2007-03-09
I've read all her published works and this is one of the best.
One of Tuchman's Best.......2007-01-29
Let me start with what might be the prime negative of this book: its description is somewhat misleading. The incident upon which the book is based is fairly tangential and little more than a lead in to the book's topic, which has more to do with British Naval history during the Revolutionary War than it does with the Dutch or Americans themselves.
That having been said, if you are curious about the British Navy's role in the Revolutionary War, this is an excellent book. Tuchman is at her best here, her writing tight and storytelling superb. She wanders off on tangents from time to time as is her habit, but even these are fascinating enough that you won't mind. At some point half-way through the book you may catch yourself thinking, "Hey, I thought that the Dutch were going to be important players in this book..." and then realize that you don't really care very much.
Even the Americans largely get left out of this Revolutionary War book. Washington, naturally, shows up, if only to move the plot along toward the Yorktown campaign. Even here he must share the limelight with de Grasse and Rodney (who Tuchman paints as the most important character in the Yorktown campaign by virtue of his missing it due to illness).
If you're looking for a history of Continental politics or the land campaigns of the Revolutionary War, you'll be disappointed. Lexington, Concord and Bunker Hill had already happened by the time this book starts. Saratoga gets only the barest of mentions, as does Trenton.
Even the tiny Continental Navy is barely mentioned.
As such this book is a "classic" Tuchman work...you'll be left thinking that she couldn't have chosen a more narrow and obscure topic...and love her for doing so. Happy reading...
Someone was indulgent........2007-01-25
This book is a rhapsody on the theme of American independence, but isn't up to Tuchman's usual standard or those from whom she borrows. The Revolutionary War has been examined so many times that one expects a revisit to provide new information or insight; this book lacks both. Original materials (see Huddleston) are more entertaining, and textbooks more informative. As it stands, the book is a good introduction to the War of Independence, but superfluous to those familiar with it and useless to the specialist.
It could have been a third shorter, if efficiency had prevailed over style. A sentence may run to a hundred words, with appositions inside parenthetical expressions. Was it dictated rather than written? Was the author, consciously or unconsciously, emulating Eighteenth Century prose while describing an Eighteenth Century war? Footnotes aren't indicated, leaving the reader to discover them after finishing the text. Was her editor out to lunch?
The First Salute is Superb.......2007-01-12
Specific interest in creating a replica of the Vessel Andrew Doria - the ship that received the First Salute from the Island of St. Eustatius, a Dutch Colony, led me to read this book. Barbara Tuchman reveals details of an important event in the beginnings of our Nation during the early days of the War of Independence. She also delves into the strength and weaknesses of the British Navy during that important period of history. Also the book develops a clear understanding of the details of how weapons and munitions found their ways to the Colonial Government's armies from manufacturers in Europe. This excellent work provided me with important new insights on the role of a very small Caribbean island in the struggle for indepence of the USA.

Book Description
Structured and practical in approach, David Bellamy's guide has amateur painters painting pictures right from the start. The well-known teacher-artist helps students to learn techniques by producing actual sketches, studies and watercolour paintings in this inspiring and practical guide. The book is divided into three main parts. The first section covers all the practical aspects of watercolour painting; the second section is more challenging, requiring students to take a little more initiative and develop their own style; and the third shows how to paint the many different elements of the landscape. The course includes numerous practical exercises which highlight the key points covered in each chapter and there are 12 demonstration pictures with clear, step-by-step instructions.
