Indispensible (if you want PHS funding), but why is it for sale?.......2007-04-03
Certainly, this is a necessary text to have on hand for anyone involved in PHS-funded animal research. The fact that it is being offered for sale on Amazon confuses me, however, as copies can be obtained free of charge from the Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW).

Book Description
The most complete and up-to-date guide available to canoeing and paddling destinations in Michigan. Includes more than 70 whitewater and flatwater trips in both the Upper and Lower Peninsulas.
Customer Reviews:
Good, descriptive book.......2007-10-05
Great companion book to "Canoeing Michigan Rivers". I liked that the book covers lakes, too. The maps were very good as were the descriptions of portages. The size of the book was a bit large. I liked the size of the aforementioned book better.
Great Reference.......2006-08-25
This is the best reference I have found for Michigan waters. There is a good mix of evaluations from rivers through populated areas to remote trips. From an easy family paddle to sea kayaking trips. As a bonus it evaluates the fishing oportunities on most of the waters, camping areas, and real world suggestions for your trip. The only thing I could ask for is more of the same on more rivers. Great book.
Excellent Choice.......2006-07-06
Although I have not had a chance to read this book cover to cover, I skimmed through much of it and found that it has an overwhelming amount of great information for the Michigan Paddler. I have searched the internet for months trying to find information like this without success. This is by far the most comprehensive list of places to paddle along with detailed information on routes, access, skill level, rapids, camping choices, optimal time to travel, distances, travel time in hours, etc...I cant wait to put this book to good use!!
Great Resource Guide.......2002-07-02
This book, Paddling Michigan, and Canoeing Michigan Rivers by Jerry Dennis and Craig Date were both purchased by our Scout Troop to aid in the planning and execution of our Scouting Outing Canoe trips. Both books are great, but the boys preferred the Canoeing Michigan Rivers over this book Paddling Michigan, although both books are being used by the Scouts.
This book has it all to plan an outing, the maps, river description, challenge, a "standard time factor" and excellent commentary on the expectation of the canoe trip. The Senior Patrol Leader Council, the event planning committee of Boy Scouts aged 14-17, was able to take this book and properly plan, organize and execute several canoe trips. It had all the information needed to make the proper decisions without having to go visit the river first, or rely on comments from someone who knows someone who said that access to the river was available from County Road 48.
The Scout Troop now uses this book as a first resourse for planning canoe trips in Michigan and has greatly aided the exploration of the rivers of Michigan with confidence!

Book Description
An exploration of Michigan's prehistoric cross-peninsula canoe routes and their subsequent use in the French era.
Book Description
In this book, successful literary agent Lisa Collier Cool shares professional, practical advice on how to craft powerfully persuasive letters that connect with an editor's imagination. Readers will learn how to develop their ideas, select the strongest slant for their article or book, hook an editor with a tantalizing lead, and more.
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction, but really needs to be updated........2007-06-04
This step-by-step guide is an easy read, a wonderful resource for writers. Mainly focused on magazine queries, the text explains much more than how to make a quality first impression with editors. It also teaches how to find and clarify ideas; how to slant them into something fresh and "irrisistible", then how to format them into something a publisher will want to read. Other chapters focus on selling yourself as the author, securing a solid hook and polishing your pieces to perfection. Several sample queries are given throughout the book.
The copy I have shows a copyright of 1987. Amazon lists a more recent date of 2002. Whether or not revisions have been made, I cannot say. If not, then the new printing is more outdated than the old. I rolled my eyes a few times and skipped entire sections because of the obviously dated material. One portion devotes far too many words to encouraging writers to use the proper equipment on their typewriters. Perhaps some authors still use typewriters. They may need to be reminded which type and color of tape to use or which "white-outs" are or are not appropriate. For the rest of us, swimming beautifully in the computer age, a revised and updated version of this book would be appreciated.
Overall Rating: GOOD -- Even better if updated.
Never Too Much.......2007-03-27
Education, continuing education, and refreshers are never too much. This book should become quotidian for any writer that prepares query letters. The percentage of information for magazine article writers slightly outweigh the information for book writers. The tips to aid an author in personalizing the sales pitch were good. The chapters have been colligated under the following topics: Ideas, Writing the Query, Facts and Quotes, Editing and Submitting. There are numerous sample letters that have been proven to work for the author, Lisa Collier Cool.
a thesaurus of good examples.......2006-06-18
This literary agent's guide for wannabe' writers is meant to help mostly novice authors persuade people just like her. The book's success is due largely to the plentiful examples of successful letters written by her and other authors. Templates abound, a happy state for any craftsman, not least beginning or intermediate writers.
Its second contribution is to humanize the mythic person of `the editor'. He or she is a busy professional--like many others, one might add--who needs to find good work. Few are large-fanged, drooly, no-monsters. But you do need to put your best foot forward. Collier Cool's little paperback will help you do that.
This book will find a place at your elbow as well-thumbed reference more than as a stirring read.
Better than most.......2005-09-20
It's a good, basic text on magazine and non-fiction book queries and covers the ground well. The writing is straightforward, clean and informative. I was looking for a book on fiction queries and this one isn't it. I wish there had been a subtitle that said what the book actually covered.
A reliable workhorse from the dame of the old school.......2005-04-21
So it's old. So it's a little smarmy. So there are sample pitch letters about how "by 1990, it's believed that many Americans will have computers." So a lot of people have moved on to selling stories with sloppy little e-mail notes. So what.
Lisa Collier Cool teaches you to cross all the 'T's to give your pitch letter unstoppable propulsion. You might read her method and say, 'that's overkill.' But unless you've got a better idea (such as phoning up your old Ivy League buddies for an assignment) this is what you want for breaking in to a magazine on the strength of raw ideas, not schmoozy contacts.
If it wasn't for this book I'd probably be in law school right now.
Book Description
Each period in the history of costume has produced its own characteristic line and silhouette, derived from a cut and construction which varies considerably from age to age. Here are patterns taken from actual dresses, many of them rare museum specimens, illustrated by sketches of the dresses. There are notes on the production of women's dress, with references to early technical books and journals, together with diagrams from some of them. Numerous illustrations show the dresses as worn complete with their hairstyles, jewelry, decorations and accessories.
Customer Reviews:
very well.......2006-11-17
I'am French, and even without the English texts the patterns are easily comprehensible when we know a little the seam
Nice to Have book rather than a Must Have .......2006-03-09
From a broad perspective this book is helpful in delineating the various periods of costume. The patterns are useful, but not plentiful.
However, the book has several shortcomings. Firstly it is printed on very cheap paper (this is a reprint version) and the black and white pictures/prints of paintings are very murky and badly reproduced on even thinner cheaper paper than the text.
The content of the book is fine for beginners but clearly the book has not been updated to reflect recent study on costume. The writing style is in the form of an endless stream of tit-bit information patched together making this book a boring read. Furthermore, the book is padded out with period quotations about costume, mainly in the form of inventory lists of costume. This adds little to the understanding of costume and the book should have been more tightly edited. Finally there are just not enough patterns in this book to make it a "must have" title - the patterns are not drawn on a grid so inaccuracies are inevitable. Anyone looking to find a variety of patterns for the period 1600 to about 1850 are going to be disappointed, but admittedly the period 1850 to 1930 is better covered by the book in terms of pattern variety. I will probably donate this book to my local library as it is not a keeper for me. Readers wanting up to date costume information are better served by acquiring texts from the various costume institutes in England.
Essential for Costumers and Fashion Designers.......2005-09-04
This is an excellent book all around, with highlights including dissections of period garments with simple outlines of pattern shapes. Though the patterns are not on a grid, they are accompanied with a scale and can be decently eyeballed for a quick project. Beginniners will be inspired and the advanced will have a handy quick reference guide. A good pattern book, and a nice read too. Anyone serious about costume or garment contruction should have this book.
Basically Important.......2004-05-26
This is the first costume text I purchased (even before knowing I was going to go to school for costume design), and even after receiving and collecting loads of other texts on costume and the history thereof, this is still the best basic book I've come across. And, yes, I actually read it instead of just looking at the pics (of which there are many, many, great examples of historical dress). Although not entirely scintillatingly written (hard to do with a sometimes dry subject such as costume history, it has to be said), it is full of information that I wouldn't have otherwise known (and I've been fascinated by clothing all my life).
Across the arc of the book, one can discern the evolution of clothing, and it provides a good background for noting the changes across the years and why they were made. There is a lot covered within, and I feel it's a great source from which to start any kind of costume research.
Mouthwatering!!!.......2004-01-07
I received this book for Christmas and couldn't be happier with it! I have not as yet attempted to draft one of the patterns, so I can't give my impression of that. However, I am impressed with the detail and extent of knowledge the author is able to share through the text! There is much more text than I had thought, and the detail is such that you can picture the garment, seam lines, trim, and all, from her descriptions! It is by no means a light read, but well worth the money to anyone interested in costuming, fashion design, or just clothing. The pages are filled with old fashion plates, paintings, and tailors' notes, along with sections of patterns relating to the time period discussed.
I highly recommend this book- an amazing read! After finishing it, you'll be an expert on women's clothing!
