3 out of 5 stars Not for every woman.......2007-08-15

I recently saw a special on the WE television network which featured the author, who by her own admission, had been married 4 times by the time she was 40 years old. The special entitled "Cougars", featured women from age 39 to age 49 all dating men more than 10 years younger. All of these women had already been either married previously or had children so they had been down the domestic road of picket fence children and husband, now these women were simply looking to have a wild sexual time with no inhibitions, no strings for the most part, and just enjoy themselve with a young man. This of course plays exactly into the minds of what the committment shy male of this generation wants anyway. Why go out with a younger woman closer to his age, who will expect committment, a serious relationship that leads to marriage, when they can date a "Cougar" and just that relationship alone sets the boundaries, because of course a cougar can't expect a man so much younger than she is will marry her. (The Ashton Kutcher Demi Moore situation is very rare). Younger men love this scenario because it frees them from the so called drama they say they encounter from a woman who expects more. The older women like it because they've already experienced the marriage and children so they just want to have fun. This is not for everyone. If you're an older woman and still want committment and haven't married yet. (And it's interesting how they are starting to consider mid to late 30's as approaching "Cougar territory), but if you fall in that category a relationship like this with a much younger man will only most likely end in heart break especially if you want more. To each her on, but if you've been down the marriage path, and don't want to go that route anymore and you're just looking to go out have fun, be sexual and let the relationship stay at a certain level, then by all means, but if you're looking for more, the chances of that happening in a Cougar younger man relationship is slim to none. Don't let the hype about older hot sexy women having it all by dating younger men influence you. It is fun, if you want to keep it at a certain level.

As a 54 year old woman who sees men my age dating and marrying women half their age - I feel it is our turn to experience the same. I dated a younger man (my "boy toy") for four years - his family strongly disapproved of the age difference, but we had a wonderful time together until they finally got their way. I don't think cheap is the way to go. I do think grace, maturity, dignity, class is the road to take in this, as in all relationships. Be yourself, be gracious, be respectful, be mindful, and above all, be honest - with yourself, with him. If two people click, then age doesn't matter. I would never "use" a younger man. I would never "use" any man. Love is an incredibly wonderful thing between two people and age doesn't and shouldn't matter. If you find it - hold onto to it with all your might -- the wolf is always at the door.

I was turned on to this book by a young man who was riding in my cab one evening. The man, in his twenties, looked like Harry Potter, but he was far from being a boy. He told me of this book and the world of the women know as Cougars. As we read together from Ms. Gibson's tome, I knew that as a twenty-something myself, I had to enter one of their lairs. That evening with Valarie Gibson's book in tow, we showed up at a variety of bars. When we pulled the book out, we immediately grabbed the attention of every 45 year old babe in the place. Not only is this book informative, it is just as good as a 22 year old man for cougar bait! Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Best Cougar manual out there.......2007-09-30

Overall has the best information. A manual that a beginner or experienced person can understand. Excellent book for mechanical or restorative use.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Mustang repair guide.......2007-02-08

I am very impressed with the amount of information and repair advice in this book. Because the early Mustangs are not as complicated at more modern automobiles, compared to recent manuals, this one has room to go into much greater detail. For example, the engine rebuild section is nearly as comprehensive as one of the books on rebuilding fords engines and is naturally focused on the engines found only in Mustangs.

There are many troubleshooting charts and the specification tables and accompanying photos and drawings are very useful for model and equipment identification, especially if one is restoring a car.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs to service a Mustang from these years, and also recommend it to anyone who is restoring an early Mustang, or considering purchasing one.

5 out of 5 stars ford mustang and cougar book.......2005-10-12

My son just bought a 1966 ford mustang. We know from past esperience that the chilton books are the best. We purchased this book so my son could learn more about his mustang which he is fixing up.

4 out of 5 stars Chilton's Ford Mustang and Cougar, 1964-73 .......2005-08-06

Well organized and comprehensive in its scope. But then again, that is what one comes to expect with a Chilton's Manual. I have used them all my life and they are invaluable when making reapirs or doing a major overhaul of an engine, transmission, or differential. It would be nice if there were more illustrations and some existing were updated.

My son and I are starting a Mustang restoration project and this book has been very useful for some basic understanding of the Ford Mustang and more advanced information concerning parts specifications. Overall I would rate this book as very good.

3 out of 5 stars It's a Chilton manual so... well, you know what it's for........2001-12-01

If you can't afford the Mercury factory service manuals, buy
the Chilton's guide and get some of your auto repairs done
yourself. It isn't an FSM - no Chilton's manual compares
to an FSM - but it's better on avergae than Haynes' guides and
it won't get you into deep water without ample warnings.

4 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2000-10-31

This book offers some very helpful insights for do-it-yourself car repair. The fuse and wiring diagrams are excellent, and the steps are easy to follow. I actually think this book is a much better value than the owner's manual I got with my 97 Contour. Some of the jobs in the book are not for beginners, however, and there is no list of the tools you will need before starting each job, but generally, this is a great book.

I l-o-v-e this cookbook. My best friend in elementary school attended Collegiate, and my mom bought one of these cookbooks in the late '70's--she was nice enough to let me have her copy. It's usually the first cookbook I refer to when looking for a recipe. I'm getting ready to order another copy for a friend of mine...

This was my mother's absolute favorite cookbook growing up in the 1970s. My aunt still cooks from it. My cousins all attended Collegiate School, for whom it was published as a fundraiser in 1973.

I look forward to finally finding my own copy of it.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Classic.......2006-11-06

I read the Liza, Bill and Jed mysteries when I was young, and now my daughter loves them just as much. They were even around a generation before I came along! This has been, and continues to be, a great series for pre-teens.

5 out of 5 stars The Ghosts of Cougar Island.......2003-04-17

...Have you ever had a spooky summer break? Well, I'll tell you this, Liza, Jed, and Bill had one spooky break that could go in the record books. Three siblings go on a vacation to their grandparent's house on Pirate Island. Bill, Liza, and Jed find a little opening in some bushes near their grandparent's house, which leads them right up to a beach that shows Cougar Island. After asking their Gran and Grandpa, they realize a rich family once owned it and when they died out, legend says whoever trespasses on the land will be haunted for life. That makes the three even more eager to go and see if the legend is true. Locals of the Island say they see ghost lights at night on Cougar Island. When Jed, Liza, and Bill find out its true, they aren't as excited about going to the Island. Then one of the neighbors, Hermit Dan, is missing some of his stuff. And the newspaper says that they still can't find the thieves who stole from several banks in the area. Do you think Jed, Liza, and Bill will have the guts to go and find who this ghost thief is?
I think this fictional book is excellent because it has many problems that come together into one big plot. It keeps you reading because when the book gets kind of boring with one problem, another one jumps in. One thing I don't like about this book is that there is so much dialogue that it gets annoying.
This book is great for mystery lovers and scary ghost book lovers. Both boys and girls would like this book. I enjoy, "The Ghost of Cougar Island," and hopefully you will too.

In one of those odd, unplanned moments of fate, David Raber paid a couple of thousand dollars to liberate a depressed and frightened cougar cub from a pet-shop cage. He took Cougar, the eponymous big cat, home, introduced him to the more compact cats that already lived with him, and watched as the household adjusted, bit by bit, to the unlikely newcomer. Everyone eventually did. So, too, did the neighborhood dogs, and most of the neighbors--though a few, Raber writes grumpily, behaved in less than friendly ways when Cougar went out for a stroll or kept vigil in the bushes. All the while, Raber observed his new housemate's behavior, learning how to interpret Cougar's growls and purrs, and how to give Cougar the freedom to act naturally in an unnatural setting.

Bringing Cougar into his home, Raber writes, "would refocus my priorities and change what I had considered important." He recounts that transformation and his changing view of wildlife and the environment, as well as the accidental fame that befell Cougar as the residents of one crowded Florida town after another came to appreciate his company. A kind of modern rejoinder to Joy Adamson's Born Free, Raber's memoir of his sentimental education in the ways of Felis concolor will interest animal enthusiasts of all kinds. --Gregory McNamee

Book Description

David Raber first saw Cougar when he was an eight-week-old kitten locked up in a toaster-sized cage, being put on display and poked and prodded by the crowd.Raber took him out, held him, and just couldn't put him back.He made four promises that day: one, no more petting, out of respect for Cougar; two, no more cages; three, he would educate people against exotic animal ownership, and four, he would make Cougar happy, and this has become a 24-hour-a-day learning process and a duty that he adores.Being the only large cat in the country who is federally licensed without a cage, Cougar strides down streets, roams hotel lobbies, enters speedboat competitions, and even films a Puma Sportswear ad with several Olympic gold medalists.Together, Raber and Cougar are a team, and in this book, Raber recounts their many adventures together - he teaches Cougar about elevators, switches, and doors while saving him from bullets and speeding cars; and Cougar teaches him about deer, oppossum, and squirrels while rescuing him from alligators and raging rivers. In helping each other, they share their weaknesses and become strong. As the official poster model for the IAMS company, Cougar has been seen by millions.Beautiful and touching, entertaining and provocative, Through Cougar's Eyes is a love story that dispels the prevalent and presumptuous thinking that mankind and wildlife can't get along and depicts sacrifice and dedication with a message: relating to animals will set you both free.AUTHORBIO: DAVID RABER graduated from DePauw University with a pre-med degree and went on to become a distinguished Naval graduate. His previous occupations include Naval aviator and the owner of an aircraft management charter business. He is currently employed as the loyal servant and devoted friend to his companion, Cougar.

3 out of 5 stars For lovers of wild cats.......2002-07-15

David Raber tells a unique story -- one which many animal lovers might wish to relive. His accounts of life with this amazing cougar are worth the read. But an animal expert he is not. He may know volumes about raising a cougar in his home, but he called an opossum a rodent. Other misstatements were less obvious but inexcusable. Still, the story was fun.

4 out of 5 stars One Amazing Animal.......2001-12-07

Ever since I was a young kid I wanted to own a big cat. I have lived with a house cat ever since I was born, 21 yrs. It doesn't need to be said how happy I was to find a book detailing big cat ownership. How interesting is this book? Well, I read all 200+ pages in 2 days. While not the most professionally written, it is packed with tales of Cougar that at times seem almost to amazing to be true. When finished, I didn't want it to be. I want to hear more about Cougar's adventures. Although David is against big cat ownership, I think this book also shows possibilities with the right committment. I hope to someday meet Cougar and David to share in the joy that this great cat brings wherever he takes David. My best to Dave and Cougar

5 out of 5 stars If you love your cat, you will love the stories about Cougar.......2001-05-19

I suppose it is every cat lovers dream to "own" a big cat like a cougar. But most people never get that chance, and if they did would quickly realize what an all consuming job it is to care for a tamed wild cat - time, money, emotion, legalities, not to mention the fact that you want to do the best for the animal. Well the author of "Through Cougar's Eyes" knows exactly what it is like to live with a big cat. And although he never in his wildest dreams ever even considered adopting a cougar he tells in touching detail how they came to be together for life.

I love cats and I love hearing cat stories. This is a humdinger of a cat story that chronicles the adventures of a man, his wife and a very large cat. It is simply amazing what David and Linda Raber were and are still willing to do to care for this beautiful animal. Are their efforts worth the sacrifices they have made? You bet they are. This animal lives a wonderful life because he is so loved and in return the Rabers have received so much joy.

I just love this story. If you love cats or if you love animals you are going to love this book and besides since Cougar is the national spokes-cat for Iams cat food you can actually meet him and his human family in person as they travel the country together, which I highly recommend it is such a treat, just like this book.

5 out of 5 stars THE EASTERN COUGAR.......2007-02-14

I WAS VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK AND THE LEVEL OF SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION INVOLVED IN THE SEARCH FOR THESE ANIMALS. I LIVE IN PENNSYLVANIA AND I ENGAGE IN A LOT OF OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES IN CLINTON, CENTRE AND LYCOMING COUNTIES. ALL OF THESE COUNTIES HAVE HAD SIGHTINGS AND I HAVE ACTUALLY MET PEOPLE WHO HAVE SEEN COUGARS. I WAS VERY PLEASED TO SEE THAT THE STANDARDS OF PROOF WERE VERY HIGH FOR CONFIRMATIONS LISTED IN THIS BOOK. I WAS ALSO GLAD TO SEE THAT THERE WAS VERY LITTLE CREDENCE GIVEN TO "BLACK" PANTHER SIGHTINGS. THIS IN MY MIND IS A BOGUS ISSUE AND IF TRUE CERTAINLY POINTS TO AN EXOTIC ANIMAL. WELL DONE.

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2006-02-03

This book is a collection of publications regarding the eastern cougar with occasional commentary from the editors. Most of the pages are devoted to accounts of sightings or other evidence of cougar acitivity in the eastern states, and at least some of these publications (newspaper and magazine articles, letters, essays, and a few scientific journal articles) can be found on the internet, and others are summarized on the internet at, for example, the Cougar Network website. The editors' organization of the publications is not particularly compelling and their commentary is sparse. Still, it is a convenience to have them glued together into one book, and perhaps for some people that will be worth the cost of the book. For that reason, I gave the book 3 stars instead of 2.

What is lacking is meaningful discussion by the editors of the complicated issues that come up when dealing with everything from eye witness accounts, to what may be accepted as scientific "proof", to aiding the recovery of a large feline predator. A little more effort and "meat" from the editors could have made this an outstanding book. They do touch upon these some of these issues but not in sufficient depth. Perhaps they minimized their own input as an attempt to present the material in an unbiased fashion. However, we can hardly assume letters and newspaper articles to be, as a rule, unbiased.

One example of something that could have been discussed relates to Dr. Melanie Culver's DNA studies, which suggest that all North American cougars belong to the same subspecies. It appears that this has not been accepted by the authorities, who evidently continue to rely on past morphologic studies which suggest that there are 32 distinct subspecies of cougar in North America. Why is it that Culver's findings have not been embraced? Is it due to fear of the social and political issues that would flare up in consequence to recognizing the eastern cougar as the same subspecies as the Florida panther, (which would imply that the former should enjoy protection under the endangered species act, as does the latter)? Or, are there valid scientific reasons to doubt the DNA studies and give more weight to morphologic studies? Or, thirdly, is it standard practice for the scientific community to wait for an independent investigator to reproduce one scientist's results before they are taken as fact? It seems to me that a discussion of this critical issue would have been entirely appropriate.

In my view, the best part of the book is, by far, Dr. David Maehr's nine page essay, entitiled Can the Florida Panther Provide Insight Into Restoring the Eastern Cougar? This is a very balanced piece which seems both skeptical and hopeful at the same time. Dr. Maehr briefly discusses some of the more complex issues and helps put the whole subject into perpective, and this partially makes up for what the editors neglect to do.

In summary, I think a review of the publications with thought provoking discussion would have been far more effective than a collection of full length publications assembled by editors who provide little input of their own. The old newspaper articles, letters, etc. by themselves just don't pull together to do the suject matter justice.

The Eastern Cougar: Historic Accounts, Scientific Investigations, New Evidence (edited by Chris Bogiano and Jerry Roberts, published by Stackpole Books, 2005) provides an astonishing array of historic accounts and scientific evidence, carefully compiled and objectively edited by the authors, to provide a strong probability that cougars survive in small breeding pockets in the east. Cougars (also known as mountain lion, puma, panther, painter, and catamount among other laymen names and `Puma (=Felis) concolour couguar' or `Puma concolor cougar' among scientists) are large, elusive, powerful feline predators supposedly extirpated from eastern United States and Canada prior to 1900. But, cougar reports and evidence continue to surface.

The reader does not need an advanced degree in biology, zoology, or any other scientific study to understand, appreciate, and learn from this book. Even the most intimidating article title, "Genetic Variation, Gene Flow, and Population Identification for North American Pumas" by the premier cougar DNA research expert Melanie Culver, has been written in terms laymen can understand; Ms. Culver is able to explain genetics like Carl Sagan explained the universe. Maps (refer specifically to the map of "Confirmed Cougar Evidence ..." facing chapter 2, "Reappearance: Where's The Evidence?") and photographs assist the reader in visualizing the animal and where scientifically confirmed field evidence suggests it may be living in the wild. Reproduced in chapter 3, "Outlook: Can They Come Back?", is the U.S. Department of the Interior's official position on eastern cougars. In a response to a request that the "Similarity of Appearance" provision of the Endangered Species Act, which protects all cougars in Florida panther territory, be applied to all cougars in the east, a Director stated: "... the Service's position remains that the eastern cougar is extirpated." and "Use of the Similarity of Appearance provision ... in the remaining eastern States is [not] justified at this time."

I highly recommend The Eastern Cougar: Historic Accounts, Scientific Investigations, New Evidence - it is a treasure to be read, re-read, and referred to.

Book Description

Outrageous, hilarious, and absolutely candid, Blood Makes the Grass Grow Green is Johnny Rico’s firsthand account of fighting the Taliban in Afghanistan, a memoir that also reveals the universal truths about the madness of war.

No one would have picked Johnny Rico for a soldier. The son of an aging hippie father, Johnny was overeducated and hostile to all authority. But when 9/11 happened, the twenty-six-year-old probation officer dropped everything to become an “infantry combat killer.”

But if he’d thought that serving his country would be the kind of authentic experience a reader of The Catcher in the Rye would love, he quickly realized he had another thing coming. In Afghanistan he found himself living a Lord of the Flies existence among soldiers who feared civilian life more than they feared the Taliban–guys like Private Cox, a musical prodigy busy “planning his future poverty,” and Private Mulbeck, who didn’t know precisely which country he was in. Life in a combat zone meant carnage and courage–but it also meant tedious hours standing guard, punctuated with thoughtful arguments about whether Bea Arthur was still alive.

Utterly uncensored and full of dark wit, Blood Makes the Grass Grow Green is a poignant, frightening, and heartfelt view of life in this and every man’s army.

5 out of 5 stars A window into the mind of a soldier.......2007-08-27

My boyfriend who is a Sgt in th USMC bought the book about a month ago and after reading it begged me to read it so I could have a better understanding of what his tour in Iraq had been like. I have to say I'm not a fan of military themed books, but this book was amazing. As a civilian it gave been better perspective of war, the action and the duldrums.

5 out of 5 stars If he's lying..........2007-08-06

I was trapped in a DC airport this week for 12 hours. While I was wondering aimlessly through airport shops, I saw this book. The Author's name gave me a quick chuckle so I picked it up.

First, I am a college educated, U.S. Marine, who enlisted at 26 much like Rico with a desire to do something great for my country after 911. Whether it is Marines or Army, the experience is the same.

But, with 4 months to go on my contract before I return to my old life I can attest to the accuracy and humor in this book. I laughed out loud at the description of his time overseas. Anyone who says this dishonors our men in uniform has never served or is completely delusional. This is dead on...

If he's lying then it is the most truthful lie I have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Wit and Absurdity: A Perspective on Modern Warfare.......2007-07-17

Blood Makes the Grass Grow Green sheds a tremendous amount of light on the front lines of today's modern Army. Neither a well-oiled machine nor a complete bureaucratic disaster the Army described by Mr. Rico possesses both tremendous potential and mind numbing ineptness. He describes his fellow infantrymen with sincerity and honesty. Most are good men - hardworking, sincere, patriotic but, like all of us, they are not without faults - some lack of basic education, an inability to keep their lives in order, or a desire to understand their enemy. Others are so violent that their desire to kill something, anything, overrides all other logic. They share their time in Afghanistan firebases as if they are a large extended family while the Army underutilizes their skills and desire to succeed by sending them on useless and ineffective missions. Months of misuse and isolation wear on the soldiers to surprising, sometimes absurd, effects. The portraits of the soldiers drawn from this memoir are more accurate than anything pushed by the mainstream "support our troops" media - this honesty in no way detracts from these men's sacrifices but rather humanizes them to the point of greater understanding and empathy (something the media façade rarely provides).

To achieve this deep understanding in an entertaining memoir rich with wit, humor, and, at times, excruciating self-depreciation is a tremendous feat.

5 out of 5 stars war mismanagement.......2007-07-14

looking at specifics in the book is not useful because the author pretty much admits to fictionalizing many aspects.

to me the book sums up the sad intersection of the twenty or thirty -something mentality and a huge mismanaged organization. i think this is the essence of the story.

4 out of 5 stars they owned the night..........2007-07-12

anything I say which could be derogatory is actually, I think, a necessary part of the book and experience which the author is trying to relate.

I have- and would- recommend it. Especially to other folks in the military- especially infantry.

enough said, I think....

(except, perhaps... former bobcat and still in 25th...)

Book Description

In the 1990s, three times as many people were attacked my mountain lions as had been attacked in the previous century. These shy predators must kill to survive, and in areas where their habitats are shrinking, human-cat encounters are on the rise. Stalked by a Mountain Lion tells the stories of attacks and strange encounters between cougars and people and offers a sensitive look at the often complex issues surrounding their interactions.

5 out of 5 stars Well written book.......2007-08-22

I bought this book after my own "close encounter" with a mountain lion while running on a remote trail to try to understand the animal a little better and to try to understand why my encounter turned out the way it did (the lion walked away) as opposed to other encounters where serious injury or death is the result. The answers are less than satisfying, since no two encounters seem to follow the same pattern--there really is no pattern. This book is extremely well-written and sometimes more graphic than I might have liked, but very informative. I'll never run alone again.

1 out of 5 stars Just change the title and BINGO! A NEW BOOK!.......2007-01-31

BEWARE THIS BOOK! If you've read "Cat Attacks: True Stories and Hard Lessons from Cougar Country," be advised that "Stalked by a Mountain Lion..." is the exact SAME BOOK, only with a new title and some (very few) updates provided. That's not to say it isn't a good book - it is, and I enjoyed it when I bought it the first time as "Cat Attacks..." But I am really unhappy at being fooled by a new title into buying the book twice. For that little manuever (not the content) I give this edition one nasty star.
