Book Description
“Nature deficit disorder” has become an increasingly challenging problem in our hyper modern world. In Awake in the Wild, Mark Coleman shows seekers how to remedy this widespread malady by reconnecting with nature through Buddhism. Each short (two to three pages) chapter includes a concrete nature meditation relating to such topics as Attuning to the Natural World, Reflecting the Rhythms of Nature, Walking with Compassion, Releasing the Inner Noise, Freeing the Animal Within, Coming into the Peace of Wild Things, Weathering the Storms of Life, and more. Incorporating anecdotes from the author’s many nature retreats, Buddhist wisdom and teachings, important nature writings by others, and nature itself, the book invites readers to participate in, not just observe, nature; develop a loving connection with the earth as a form of environmental activism; decrease urban alienation through experiencing nature; embody nature’s peaceful presence; and connect with ancient spiritual wisdom through nature meditations.

Awake in the Wild.......2007-02-04
Mark Coleman's book "Awake in the Wild" provides a delightful and accessible means to explore meditation in the nature world. The exercises and stories provide simple and profound ways for the reader to experience a greater sense of attention and connection to the web of life, and an awareness of the divine. "Awake in the Wild" has become a faithful companion for me on hikes -- there is always something new to discover. I highly recommend this book for both aspiring and cultured meditators! Enjoy.

This book is soothing to the soul, and is an inspiration to connect with this beatiful planet we live on. Mark Coleman, really captures the essence of what it is like to tune in to the natural world. This book is an encouraging reminder to look at all of the life happening around us, and to stop and smell the roses. Its an easy, sweet, and soothing read.
a breath of fresh air.......2006-11-15
This book is a must read. Mark Coleman reminds us of the importance of getting off our computers and into the wild, a place many of us are no longer familiar with. This book helps bring you back and many of the meditations are great for beginners. When you're feeling unbalanced, disconnected, and simply overwhelmed by the world, take this book to the ocean, into the woods, or your favorite park and find yourself again.

Almost the definitive work on Antarctica........2004-12-25
If ever you have considered visiting Antarctica - for whatever reasons, this is the one book which will answer those questions which we, until now, unanswered.
It says much for this work - which is described as a voyage of images and reflections by four explorers and photographers, that the final copyright of the book itself is shown as belonging to the Smithsonian Institute. A sign of quality in itself. It would be easy to describe those images as "Outstanding" or "Stunning" - and so they are, but those words are too frequently used for lesser photographs.
This is a book which explains the Antarctic in a way in which it has not been explained before. It does so with an excellent mix of text and photography which, as I have said, answers those questions that until now remained unanswered.
If all you want is to know something about Antarctica - then stop and pick up this book. You will not be disappointed.

Book Description
Columcille was born in a remote corner of Ireland in the year 521. Legend has it that as a child, he was fed a cake filled with the letters of the alphabet, and so learned to love writing. He grew up to become a monk and a scribe a thousand years before the invention of printing, when books had to be copied by hand. There was one book, a beautiful volume of psalms from distant Rome, that Columcille especially loved, and even though its owner refused him permission, Columcille secretly copied it. The copy was discovered, and a dispute arose over who it belonged to: Columcille, who made it, or the owner of the original. So better was the argument that a battle was fought between the two men's powerful friends; although Columcille's side won, the victory felt hollow to him. To punish himself, he set out in a tiny boat, vowing to leave Ireland forever.A revered figure in Celtic history, Columcille (also known as Columbia) founded the famous monastery on the Scottish island of Iona and left a legacy of learning that illuminated a corner of the Dark Ages. History, drama, and a love of books and reading fill a story--told here in exquisite watercolors and deflty understated prose by noted author and artist Don Brown.
Customer Reviews:
A PERFECT Back to School Book!.......2007-09-17
This book was read as part of the Catholic Mosaic program with our kids. It happened to be read around the first week of school and the subject of being a scholar and how important books are to EVERYONE was highly appropriate. Definitely a keeper!
Wonder Book on Saint Columba.......2005-10-15
The only thing that I can add to the professional and reader reviews is that St. Columcille is also known as St. Columba. All the other reviews do a great job of describing this book.
Recommended for readers of all ages.......2003-04-20
Deftly written and superbly illustrated by Don Brown, Across A Dark And Wild Sea is the true story of Columcille (also known as Columba), a beloved figure from Celtic history. Columcille loved books so much that he secretly copied a volume of psalms from Rome against it's owner's wishes. The resulting and bitter fallout in 521 A.D. caused Columcille to deliberately leave Ireland in a tiny boat, vowing never to return. He founded a famous monastery on the Scottish island of Iona and left a legacy that endures to this day. Brought to life with moody, windswept color illustrations, Across A Dark And Wild Sea is a most engaging picture book and recommended for readers of all ages.
The Man Who Loved Books............2002-08-17
"Columcille was born in 521. He was the son of a king, from a corner of Ireland scrubbed hard by ocean winds, in a time that came to be known as the dark ages..." So begins Don Brown's marvelous picture book biography of the scribe and monk, known now as Saint Columba. Brown traces the Celtic legend of this remarkable man who desperately wanted to bring learning and books back into the world after much was lost with the fall of the Roman Empire. After a bloody war was waged over the copying and ownership of a special book of psalms, Columcille left Ireland forever and with twelve followers "set sail on a dark and wild sea." Landing on the tiny Scottish island of Iona, he and his followers built a monastery and scriptorium where books were copied and scribes were trained. "Books were made and dispatched, like small boats on a dark and wild sea, to places where reading and writing had been forgotten or ignored. The books made colonies of learning, and people's minds, once dark with ignorance, were brightened." Mr Brown's poetic text is filled with imagery, is rich in history and drama and complemented by powerful and evocative artwork in quiet and subdued tones. Together word and art bring Columcille's inspiring story to life with passion and respect. Perfect for youngsters 8 and older, or as a read aloud for younger children, Across A Dark And Wild Sea includes an Author's Note to enhance and complete the story, the Unical alphabet used by scribes, and a bibliography. This is a rare and wonderful story celebrating books and learning, that shouldn't be missed. "Columcille, the man who loved books, helped the world love books. So we remember him and retell his story."

Customer Reviews:
A wonderful resource from beginning to end!.......1999-06-19
This book is exactly what I was looking for - and I didn't even know it. I thought the book would be basic explanations of keeping a nature notebook with the bonus of having the authors (and her children's) sketches in it. I was VERY pleased to find that it was that, plus a whole lot more. A homeschooling mom has written the book and she very articulately shows how using journals can incorporate into more than just art or nature study. In the book, I found a brief history of different people who have kept journals through the ages and the various reasons why. (This alone has given me many ideas in helping to introduce journals to my children.) She goes on to give suggestions on how to get started and what supplies are needed. Five different chapters are included on teaching & incorporating various subjects with your Discovery Journals. And the appendices give a list of books with examples of nature studies, and a list of famous men & women whose journals can be looked into for further study. I found this to be a wonderful resource. I have always kept journals but never ventured into keeping a nature journal. This will be an excellent resource to get me started and keep me going and its quite a bargain for all the information packed into this lovely little book.

Book Description
In her bestselling Animals as Teachers and Healers, author and animal advocate Susan Chernak McElroy shared how her beloved animal companions guided and sustained her through her battle with advanced cancer. Twelve years later, when a fire ravaged her mountain home and reduced her emotional security to ashes, once again animals—wild animals this time—provided the guidance that helped her heal and grow through yet another catastropic life change.
Writing with a passionate love and respect for the natural world, McElroy invites us to walk with her along the ancient four-footed path that leads through transformation into wholeness. The rattlesnake coiled inches from her hand, the broken-winged hummingbird who sat on her finger and drank sugar water, the red fox and his Saint Bernard playmate—each becomes an incarnation of life-sustaining powers, teaching us better, healthier ways of being in the world. These true stories and a host of others speak to the necessity for ritual, the value of generosity, and how to deal with essential life changes by reconnecting to the earth and its rhythms.
McElroy documents rich insights that come from her animal kin—animals in the wild and those in the inner world of dreams and visions. A cougar and her cubs bring balance and harmony to the valley. . . . A friend’s chocolate Lab builds medicine wheels around his human companions, reminding them of the need for community. . . . A cow elk attacked by wolves faces her own mortality stoically, teaching us that endings of one kind herald beginnings of another.
But it was the magnificent six-pointed bull elk who ventured into McElroy’s world each day and reappeared in her dreams at night that led her on her most inspirited soul journey through homelessness, divorce, and the deep sense of disengagement that she had felt since cancer had tried to evict her from her body years before.
A powerful, beautifully written story of one woman’s journey of personal transition to a genuine sense of belonging in the world, the book ends exactly where it should—in a heartfelt sense of home on earth, a place big enough to welcome all life.
Customer Reviews:
Heart in the Wild.......2005-03-31
Susan has done it again, write a book that I could not put down until I finished. In fact, I have just finished reading it for the second time. I especially loved how she shared her life experiences and the way animals have been a big part of her life.I love wolves and I sponsored a wolf named "Rosie". In this book Susan tells the story of the wolf that came to a Northeast couples home with a bad infected foot. They took the wolf in one night when he was very ill but the wolf died in the morning. That made me cry reading about the wolf, but the couple that provided care to this wolf are to be commended for their kindness to one of God's creatures and to Susan for writing about it.
A Journey of the Heart.......2004-05-13
Once again, Susan Chernak McElroy has demonstrated her uncanny ability to take the reader with her into the wild places and to open communication with our companions on this earth. She paints "word pictures" which sweep the staunchest urban dweller into her journey, as we travel with her and see and smell and hear the wooded landscape of the mountains. Her sensitivity and passion for Nature and the creatures of Nature act as a prism through which we can see into our hearts...and see there a reflection of that larger world.
A beautiful and inspiring read!.......2004-05-11
If you love animals, nature and self-discovery, this is a book you must read. I could not put it down and have already read it twice. The author's courage in the face of amazing adversity is a gift to the reader. It shows how a willing and open spirit can help you achieve grace and peace.
Didn't like it.......2004-03-18
Would not recommend it......did not like it at all.
Dance in the Wild.......2004-03-17
Susan Chernak McElroy's heart is really revealed in her latest book. Heart in the Wild is a must read for anyone who wants to get to know her better. With courage, humor, and exquisite insight, she tells of the path that she has traveled and the wisdoms that have been revealed from her life with Nature. I would have loved to have read this book prior to her earlier two books and thus more fully appreciated her teachings and insights. Through her book, Susan has shared the gift of who she is, the deep empathy she has with all of Nature, and the dance she continues to this day.

100 Years of Adventure and Discovery!.......2006-06-10
I've been a fan of National Geographic since I was just a little boy, the captivating photographs and well written articles of The National Geographic Society have never ceased to amaze me.
When I bought this book a week ago, I was reluctant to believe that I had made a wise decision in buying it. But after it arrived in the mail and I saw those wonderful photographs and read the articles of this book, I realized just how wrong I had been! I usually dont buy the newer publications of National Geographic due to the decline in the quality of the articles over the years. These days, the articles published in the pages of National Geographic magazine are sub-par when compared to the articles of the 80's & 90's. What ever happened to the writers whos articles inspired me to become a Journalist? Anyway, I was worried that this book would be lacking in the quality of it's articles, but I was glad to discover that I was wrong! This is one of the best National Geographic books that I have ever read! It contains some of the best writing that I've ever seen, not to mention the breath-taking photography that has always made National Geographic such an icon among books and magazines!
If you're a fan of National Geographic, then I highly recommend adding this book to your collection!
And if you're a fan of fine photography then I highly recommend buying this book! It's packed full of more than 400 full color and black & white photographs!
And at the price that they're selling it for, they're practically giving it away! Buy it now, you wont be disappointed!
The Reason Why The National Geographic is Still Here.......2002-01-14
Only National Geographic could chronicle the triumphs and the tragedies of mankind, as well as the awesome wonder of nature. This thick volume features award-winning photography combined with detailed accompanying text.
For those of us unable to travel to such exotic locations or live during the time periods profiled, this monumental book offers such an opportunity.
This purchase is money spent wisely.
A great buy..........2000-05-01

Book Description
In 1982, Rachel Smolker traveled to Monkey Mia, a remote spot in western Australia where she’d heard wild dolphins regularly interact with people. She had no intention of staying long; she simply wanted to see if the rumors were true. That initial trip changed Smolker’s life; it commenced a fifteen-year scientific obsession that has culminated in this fascinating scientific adventure story–the first-ever intimate account of dolphin life in the wild.
To Touch A Wild Dolphin is a seminal work that radically alters our fundamental understanding of these enigmatic creatures. Learning to identify scores of dolphins by their dorsal fin, Smolker and her team of scientists were able to conduct close and consistent studies that revealed the dolphin to be even more intelligent than we’d previously suspected. And while they were every bit as playful as we’ve known them to be, they also proved to have a dark and alarmingly violent side. But more than just a document on dolphins, this book is a touchingly personal look at the life of a scientist, at the rigors and sacrifices but also the wonders and joys of unending days in the field. Written with prose poetic and pristine, this book is nothing short of a landmark.
Customer Reviews:
A fascinating book!.......2007-08-14
I loved this book. I have always been interested in dolphins and was intrigued to learn how they live. Their connection with humans seems so close, like they are as interested in learning about us as we are about them. This woman's story of her time with the dolphins made me wish I was there too. I read the book a couple of years ago and still think about it. Some of her stories still make me laugh when I think of them. A fascinating story!
From a dolphin lover in the highest degree.......2006-03-10
I'm passionate about dolphins, and I couldn't get through the book. I felt as if the author didn't like dolphins, and didn't really respect them. I hate to be saying this about a book that seemed at first glance so wonderful, but I didn't feel as if the book protrayed positive feelings. I just feel as if the author doesn't like dolphins, and I think that a book that is written in a way that might seem emotional, but doesn't portray true feelings or a love for the creatures that are said to be loved. If the tone is to be set in one way, the words used should reflect that tone.
This book.......2004-09-20
I'm reading this book with my Mom and it's pretty good. It's very interesting how the author got to study the dolphins.

Amazing.......2003-05-03
Ever since I was a little girl, I've always been fascinated by dolphins. My career goal is to work with dolphins, in any shape or form, but particularly in the research aspect. I picked up this book while browsing the library one day and fell completly in love with it. It definitely reconfirmed my dream of working with these wonderful creatures, but I also learned a lot about their behaviors and personalities. It also shows that dolphins are not all the same--they actually have unique personality traits. I was so awed by this book that I gave in and decided to buy it--I should receive it in a couple days so I'm looking forward to reading it until it is worn out!! I recommend this book to anyone and everyone who is curious about dolphins. Happy reading!

Book Description
With a body twisted by adolescent scoliosis and memories of the brutal death of a woman he loved, Lynn Schooler kept the world at arm's length, drifting through the wilds of Alaska as a commercial fisherman, outdoorsman, and wilderness guide. In 1990, Schooler met Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino, and began a profound friendship cemented by a shared love of adventure and a passionate quest to find the elusive glacier bear, an exceedingly rare creature, seldom seen and shrouded in legend. But only after Hoshino's tragic death from a bear attack does Schooler succeed in photographing the animal -- completing a remarkable journey that ultimately brings new meaning to his life.
The Blue Bear is an unforgettable book. Set amid the wild archipelagoes, deep glittering fjords, and dense primordial forests of Alaska's Glacier Coast, it is rich with the lyric sensibility and stunning prose of such nature classics as Barry Lopez's Arctic Dreams and Peter Matthiessen's The Snow Leopard.
Customer Reviews:
I LOVED this book!!.......2007-06-29
This book was probably the best book I have read in a long long time. It takes a LOT for me to say "I couldn't put it down" but I COULDN'T!!! It was written so well and so compellingly interesting, it was over before I knew it, and I wanted more. I do hope that Lynn Schooler writes again about ANYTHING ALASKA. A terrific find.
Friendship & Tragedy.......2007-04-17
I have been reading a lot of non-fiction Northern Frontier/Alaskan books and this was one of the better ones. A great read about a new friendship developing over something that was so rare and elusive. And yet such a sad and tragic end... Highly recommended. It's more about friendship than just that blue bear...
A Warm but Tragic Story.......2007-03-06
"The Blue Bear" by Lynn Schooler is a story of friends, of nature in all its raw and open forms, and of the possibilities of healing. The subject of this book -- just as photographer Michio Hoshino is quoted as saying about a Japanese documentary on him -- is actually Alaska itself. I enjoyed reading of the various journeys, both emotional and physical, that the author makes in his life, with the splendor of Alaska always providing a visual backdrop to the twists and turns in the plot.
It was good that the author chose a more humble approach to his narrative as opposed to, for example, arrogantly listing all his conquests of the natural world, as we see in much of nature-related writings these days.
I have to say, though, that after getting to know Japanese photographer Michio Hoshino better through the pages of this book, it was a bit difficult getting through the chapter in which he is literally taken away us. Of course, here in Japan, Hoshino is still considered something of a legend and his work lives on. Still, it was nice to be able to go behind the legend of a great photographer and human being, through such a gifted storyteller as author Schooler. A warm but tragic story that will leave you feeling much fuller inside than before.
"Michio, where the hell are you,now that we've finally found the bear.".......2005-08-21
I had this book recommended to me by a friend who has a deep interest in bears ,has travelled widely and seen and watched many up close in their natural habitat;including in Alaska. She has shown me photos of standing only a few feet from wild Grizzly bears.I could hardly believe it, when she told me how approachable they were for experts and the pictures convinced me.Not to say, that I wouldn't keep my distance and give them utmost respect. When she told me this was an excellent book, and that I would enjoy it,I knew I was in for a great read.In other words, since it impressed her so much,it was sure to be good.
I read a lot of "Nature" books and spend an awful lot of time outdoors birding and am very familiar with the enjoyment and spirituality one gets from that wonderous combination of people, animals, landscape, sounds and silence, weather and atmosphere, and all that is encompassed when one partakes in a relationship with nature.
The excitement one gets when finding something new or just observing something seen before, is undescribable; but Schooler does as good a job of it as any nature writer that I have come across. He writes from the soul and great love he gets from living.Yes,this book is about the Blue Bear,Alaska and his friend and soulmate Michio, along with many other things, but what he really is writing about is the great enjoyment life is if one really learns to appreciate it.From this book you should learn that it is not only in Alaska that such enjoyment can be found. It is in the desert looking at sunsets, cactii and Roadrunners,in the forest searching out a Barred Owl,on the ocean watching a Tropicbird, sitting at a campsite when a Moose appears,or watching and trying to identify up to 20 different species of Gulls around Niagara Falls in the winter when it is wet windy and bitterly cold;or any of the millions of things the Creator has provided.
I'd like to quote a few things that demonstrate the excellence of the author's writing skills:
"Everything always gets what it needs."
"Home is not always a door at the end of a sidewalk.
Sometimes it is a broader place that holds the shape of the
sky,the water we drink, and the food that becomes the minerals
of our bones,Sometimes it is the sum of our experiences and
memories, and sometimes it is wherever we happen to be-if
we are with the right companion."
"As a photographer,,"Michio taught me how to 'look' with
my eyes-- but as a friend, how to 'see' with my heart."
An excellent read for anyone who enjoys life, and a great eyeopener for anyone who thinks life is boring.
Awesome writing.......2005-01-07
An amazing story coupled with great writing makes for a great read. I've traveled to Alaska and the Pacific Northwest three times and have never read a book that does a better job of summing up the power and beauty of the region. Lynn Schooler adds such personal touches that I feel I was there with him and Michio. His feelings about nature, glaciers, and the grand scheme of life and death remind me of the book 'Freedom is the Highest Good' by Tim Hammell
