wonderful seasonal alphabet book for northwoods lovers.......2001-06-06
I love alphabet books and I love all things referencing nature and life in the northern woodlands. This book has various elements that are unique to an alphabet book. First, the A starts off with January and goes through the year with Z ending with December. This is noted at the bottom of the page and the month/season is depicted in the illustration. For example A for Antler shows a snowy landscape in the back. Another example is August showeing the time that beavers build a dam in their Pond (P). I love the seasonal element especially since I feel our young children are growing up with only commercial holidays as the indicators of our seasons (locked inside air conditioned buildings away from nature, etc.). The illustrations are woodcuts that were then colored with paint and they are beautiful and fun. (Can you tell I am also a woodcut admirer?) The illustrations are sometimes lifestyle representing such as E as Evening depicting parent and children reading and writing by lantern-light and Q as Quiet near the edge of the pond. (These illustrations are not purely animal or nature references.) Some modern day machines also are represented by G as Grader and O as Outboard (boat motor) so this is not purely an old-fashioned or timeless depiction. Letters are represented in woodcut with both capital and lower case print style and the word features woodcut as well with the first letter of the word in capital and the rest in lower case. A short paragraph of usually two sentences describes the scene and often times includes personal experiences of the author.
Reminds me of "A Farmers Alphabet" which represents old-fashioned life in Vermont for its lovely woodcut illustrations and clearly marked letters that are good for teaching young children the alphabet.
This author has a similar book on counting which I plan to read and buy in the future called "Gathering". I am hoping it is as wonderful as this book.

Kids will love this book!.......2006-10-05
P. Bear is having a New Year's Party and all his best-dressed friends are invited. Each time the clock strikes the hour, a corresponding group number of exotic animals shows up. By midnight, P. Bear has a full house and your child will have a grasp of the clock face.
This sturdy board book is attractively illustrated and is great for years of childhood. The simple black, white and red illustrations are perfect for newborn eyes as parents first read aloud to their babies. The board book is handy for toddlers who love to be rough with their beloved stories. The sequential numbers teach counting to preschoolers and the reference to time with the appropriate clock-face on each page sets a great foundation for learning to tell time. Besides, the book is full of exotic animals. What child doesn't enjoy that?
Armchair Interviews says: P. Bear's New Year's Party is an overall great book from birth to six and beyond.
A fun book that makes readers & counters out of everyone!.......1999-07-28
This is a book to teach counting, but it is more than that, in just being plain fun! Numbers are displayed in quantities, in a clock, in words and their varieties. The characters are terrific!
Book Description
A journey through their seasons, in words and pictures.
"What good is a bear?" The author opens the book with this thought-provoking question and proceeds to answer it by taking us through an entire year in the lives of three bear species found in North America -- the brown, the black and the polar bear.
Beginning when the bears first wake from hibernation and give birth in February,
Bears tells the story of an entire year as these magnificent animals hunt, feed, play, mate and breed until the return of winter, when the cycle begins again with the need to hibernate.
Bears inspire both affection and fear in us. The teddy bear is a familiar symbol of childhood and security, yet the notion of the bear as a dangerous killer has survived the taming of the wilderness and remains frightening to the camper, rancher and wilderness traveler.
In
Bears, the author covers:
- Polar bears and their unique marine habitat
- Brown and black bears across their range
- Dangers from bears living too close to human habitation
- Biology and breeding
- The five bear species that do not live in North America
Bears: A Year in the Life is packed with facts and details and is lavishly illustrated with more than 125 remarkable color photographs.

Highly recommended.......2007-07-19
I am currently photographing bears myself in western Canada and hugely enjoyed this beautiful book. The author mixes wonderful photography with deep, fascinating insights into the behaviour and ecological relationships of North America's three bear species. If you want a book on bears that is both beautiful and intelligent, look no further!
Cannot Recommend Enough.......2006-07-25
This is a beautifully written, well done book on North American bears. The photography is astounding, with over 100 colour photographs. I would recommend this book to anyone with any interest in learning about bears, their lives, their habits and behaviours.

Children will be captivated from the first page by the delightful illustrations. The story told in rhyme will hold their interest until the last page. The Biblical truth will be easily applied by them since it was related so well through situations they encounter every day.

Story of a Cheyenne Warrior.......2005-08-04
Bear's Heart is the story of Bear's Heart, a Cheyenne warrior who was taken prisoner by the U.S. Army in 1875, and, along with many of his fellow warriors, and warriors from other nations, was sent to a military prison in Florida. There, like many of the other captives, he spent some of his time documenting his life and experiences through drawings. These drawings were sometimes collected into booklets and either sold or, as in the case of the pictures used for this book, given away as gifts. In this case, the booklet had been given to General William Tecumseh Sherman when he visited the prison in which Bear's Heart was being held in November of 1876. Although intended for children, this book is actually suitable for everyone as Bear's Heart's pictures are a fascinating first-hand account of one Cheyenne's changing world.

The children's photographer, Anne Geddes, may be best known as "the one who does those cute pictures of the babies in the flowers." This build-your-own scrapbook features flower pictures, babies dressed as bumble bees, babies on pumpkins, babies, babies, and more babies. Geddes's babies are adorable without being too "cute" and the scrapbook itself is great fun to look at, whether or not you manage to get the photos pasted in, the locks of hair snipped, and the details (weight at six months, first tooth lost) entered.
Book Description
Babies grow and change each day, and every moment is an opportunity for discovery. This exceptional book helps parents record the milestones, memories, firsts, and favorites as their infant becomes a toddler and their toddler heads off to school. Anne Geddes' engaging images are the perfect supporting cast for any child's star performance.
Customer Reviews:
Love this book!.......2006-01-26
This record book is wonderful! It is very pleasing to the eye as well as practical. Many of the traditional baby record books had too many categories and information to fill in, some even had a spot for EACH day of your baby's first year! This book is extremely realistic and has all of the importnant information you would expect to find and even some blank Comment and Photo pages for things you and your family may find important but are not in the book, like family traditions or favorite pictures you have collected. I loved the book so much for my three year that when she was two, I purchased 2 more for future children!
ANNE GEDDES EXPLOITS!.......2003-08-13
Has anyone ever given a thought to the young children who are grossly exploited in ALL of ANNE GEDDES work. This woman has made her money off exploiting babies who have had their basic human rights taken away from them. This is a significant breech of human rights.
Absolutely PERFECT!.......2003-02-19
When I adopted my daughter, I was thrilled to find such a gorgeous baby book to go with my gorgeous baby! My husband is her natural father and he filled me in on all the birth details and enjoyed helping to create her memory records in this edition. I shopped for months to find the perfect book to keep her records in - I especially wanted the perfect one for her because it's difficult to put together the details of the earliest records as a mother who wasn't able to experience the earliest days of my baby's life. This is the most beautiful record book ever, and now that we are expecting our second baby, I will definitely order one of the Anne Geddes editions for the new one, too!
Beautiful book.......2003-01-10
I have purchased this as a gift for my sis and bro-in-law who are expecting their first child. This is a beautiful memory book, and I can't wait to give it to them.
The photographs are lovely, and it has room for all of the important moments to be collected, written about, and then cherished.
Excellent!
Not nearly enough space for an expressive mommy.......2002-10-08
The pictures were cute, but overpowered the layout of each page. I have twins, myself, and didn't think it was necessarily conducive to twins as mentioned in another review. I ended up getting a book that allowed more room for personal photographs and far more pages to keep track of my babies' first years.

A Book of Ninja Photos - Yet A Photo Can Speak A Thousand Words.......2005-11-27
At first glance Secrets of the Ninja appears to be just an interesting picture book. And... it certainly is that, every page is filled with professional color photographs depicting some aspect of ninjutsu.
Although the photographs are all captioned, there is only a limited amount of actual text in the book. But, it has been said that a picture can be worth a thousand words, and in the case of Secrets of the Ninja that turns out to be the case.
The photograph series show many things, from how to write in the ninja's secret alphabet, to techniques for fighting with a length of rope, to how to make a compass using a candle and a sewing needle. We even find a recipe for `ninja tofu'.
Secrets of the Ninja reveals no great secrets, but it is still a well-done, though very basic reference to the training, tools, and techniques of the ninja.
This is a great book for children that have an interest in the martial arts and ninjutsu, and not too bad for adults with like interests.
This book is Great!.......2004-03-19
This really is a great book, for the begginer. It is loaded with information on weapons, the history of the ninja(I'm not sure how accurate it is, I'm not an expert.), and the life style of the ninja. This book is great but teaches little technique and kind of has a childish tone, that might just be me, but it is still awesome. if you want to learn some more technique then I suggest; Stephen Hayes, Ashida Kim, And
Dr. Masaaki Hatsumi. If you want the most basic information, and basic technique, then get this book. I gurantee you will read it over, and over again. Lot's of fun, and very informative.
Ninja Trickery.......2004-02-13
Secrets of the Ninja is a wonderful (but a bit thin) book about the techniques of the ninja, the mysterious subclass of the samurai. This book is a delightful read, but talks more about the techniques the ninja used than what they actully were. With interesting information about how ninja told time, ninja exercises, tools, ninja moves and more, this book is for the slightly interested American, not a person who already knows tons of information about ninjutsu. Falling into the first catagory, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It will keep you laughing till the end, but has only 90 or so pages, so dont expect that much. Most of this book was pictures, which many people probably like. All in all, this book was very interesting and not at all dense. I cant really say whether it is worth your money or not, because it really depends on the person.

Brilliant -- Nothing Like it in the Ninja World of Books.......2003-02-21
I was surprised! I thought I'd seen all there was to see about Ninja in print. But this book, published in Tokyo, has got to be the best! Page after page of color photos of nasty Ninjas doing their stuff, and between loads of fascinating info that I, as a Ninja buff, never even knew. Like what do Ninja eat? How do they tell the time from a cat's eye? What's the real colors of their costumes? (The answers: Tofu; by the dilation of the pupil; blue, but also other colors, such as grey, brown, etc depending on light). If there was one complaint, that is that I want more! If you're into history, martial arts, Japan, or just get off on super cool Ninja coolness, get this book!
First-rate, historically accurate, "user friendly" reference.......2003-01-06
Collaboratively compiled and edited by Jennifer Cahill and Michie Itoh, Secrets Of The Ninja: Their Training, Tools, And Techniques is a fascinating compendium of ancient training methods, rituals, martial arts, survival strategies, and much, much more used by those ancient Japanese spies, saboteurs, assassins and warriors once known as "ninja". Enhanced with an informative introduction by Hiromitsu Kuroi (Director of the Iga Sect Ninja Association, Jurondo), the descriptive text combined with exquisitely detailed, full color photography, bring the "real world" of Ninja training, tools, costumes, codes, diets, lifestyles, techniques, and philosophy vividly to life in a first-rate, historically accurate, "user friendly" reference which is very highly recommended for martial arts students, Japanese history buffs, fantasy and historical fiction writers employing ninja characters, as well as the non-specialist general reader who is genuinely curious about what it once meant to be a ninja.

Mixed feelings.......2005-09-27
An original plot and pretty convincing settings is marred by one-dimesional characters and cheesy dialogue. Giving historical characters contemporary sensibilities in order to make the modern reader like them really diminishes the realism. The 'baddies' are normally identifiable by some physical defect.
Great starter for Pompeii enthusiasts.......2005-03-07
After watching the Learning Channel's documentary, "Pompeii: The Last Day," I was pushed to know more about this beautiful city that suffered such a terrible death and that was way ahead of its time.
My curiosity was satisfied, and then some, with this enlightening and informative book.
I enjoyed the paintings of the scenes of what happened to people on that fateful day of 24th August 79 C.E., how the ash had frozen them in time and the next of how they were discovered in those same positions when they were undug nearly two thousand years later in 1961 (to give one example).
For me, the best part was reading Pliny the Younger's letter to his friend Tacitus, written in 104 C. E., about the destruction Mount Vesuvius wrecked upon everyone that surrounded her and about how his uncle, Pliny the Elder, had died in Stabiae because of the noxious fumes that suffocated the air. You're not getting a better first-hand account than that!
The intended audience for this book is not a scholarly one, so that would explain why it's not loaded with Latin and Greek words and/or phrases. But if the text contained such words, that's why Latin and Greek dictionaries are around - to look up those words.
You'll need to look at this book a few times: One to read the text and another to just look at the pictures and read the equally informative captions. You'll learn alot.
But no matter how much I've read and watched about the city over the years, I still can't grasp why Pompeii had to suffer so much. They were way ahead of time with the everyday instruments they used (a printing press, a duplicate of which would not be made until over a thousand years later), bathing to keep diseases at bay (something that Nostradamus would rediscover fifteen hundred years later during the Black Plague). As the author points out, Pompeii had a standard of living that would not be achieved again until the 1950's. (So much for progress!)
A fantastic read.
Scrapbook about Pompeii.......2001-01-26
This is the first book I read on Pompeii, and therefore my only source of knowledge about what happened there. The book was very easy to read, with almost no jargon or unnecessary details. On the negative side, the book does not follow a meaningful structure, and is almost like a scrapbook on Pompeii. There are plenty of colorful pictures, which have no mention in the text. So first you need to read the book, and then go through the pictures and read the notes on them.
The book starts out describing the history of excavations in Pompeii. Then, we have chapters on the daily life in Pompeii, how they earned a living, the role of women in society, leisure in Pompeii, their relationship with Gods and their views on love and death. At the end there is a section called documents, which includes writings of various writers on Pompeii, including Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, and Stendhal.
I don't feel like I learned everything there is to know about Pompeii. For example, I am not clear on whether escape was at all possible, or whether anyone survived. The information presented was interesting, but I feel there were gaps in the way it was presented. This is probably a good thing, because it stimulates one for further reading.
A Slick Pamphlet: All you Need to Learn about Pompeii.......2000-04-04
Like all of the other books on Pompeii that I have reviewed at this web site, this one was also assigned for a class that I took on Pompeii at Tulane (Professor Spaeth, good teacher). I'd have to say that I loved this book the best, as I was always thumbing through it to take a closer look at the colorful pictures and neat passages quoting both ancient(in translation--thank god! ) and modern sources describing Pompeii.
This book forms only a small part of the "Discovery" series, which is awesome and accessible monographs on every conceivable subject--from Alexander the Great to the Celtic World to Picasso.
The book is also easy for children and adults alike to read. The book's primary goal is to entertain, but that does not certainly nullify the book's propensity to teach. A great triumph all around.
Detailed maps of excavated regions and floorplans of principle edifices, lush illustrations reconstructing temples and houses, pictures of paintings and artifacts, plus detailed written descriptions of the ruins. Who could ask for more?
There is also some bonus material, including short passages written by celebrities like Goethe and Mark Twain when they went to Pompeii and wrote about their experiences in their diaries, and some short biographies of the scholars in the 18th century who began to study Pompeii scientifically and not as some grandiose treasure hunt.
Very fun stuff. Highly recommended. And the book doesn't write over anybody's head by using esoteric terms or include arcane and silly exerpts written in Greek and Latin with the tacit presumption that "Joe Blow" wouldn't understand the material because he only knows English.
In the end we find that Pompeii, like everything on Earth, was comprised simply of ordinary people trying to make a living and achieve a little happiness. So why not learn the fun way?
Book Description
There is a universal longing to live near the water ... and this inspiring book can make that dream come true. What's it really like to live near the sea (or on a lake or at the river's edge)? Maine architect Robert Knight looks at 25 well-designed dream homes that are enhanced by the water around them; and he presents six design themes to help the reader understand what makes a house on the water work well. Over 300 color photos and site plans are featured in this outstanding portfolio of homes filled with inspiration.
Customer Reviews:
EXCELLENT !.......2007-06-29
If you are about to build a home...or just enjoy seeing the details that make other structures a "home" then you will love this book...
Very informative...beautifully executed...homerun all the way...
OK, but not what I was looking for........2007-02-13
I was excited to get this book in the mail, as I thought it would have some real good ideas on how to build a larger home on the water that had some character. I found most of the homes rather odd, homes for people that would name their children Jupiter or Flower. I am back today ordering more books. Also most homes either are RIGHT on the water or set back in rock. Didn't find much in the way of regular 100ft setback from the water, woods, maybe a walkout basement type of MN lakes home. There was one from WI but again, it was right on the water, which you normally can not build now days.
Visually Delicious.......2006-12-28
This book is wonderful at capturing the rare beauty of various architectural wonders through vivid photographs and welcoming text. You never get bored flipping through this book and it is incredibly inspiring. It combines several differently designed homes that will appeal to a variety of readers. Reading this book is like daydremaing on paper. Highly recommended.
Architect.......2006-03-11
I found this book both educational and handsome in content and in photography. As an architect practicing in different regions of the country, I'm always thankful for having opportunities to do design work in Maine. Maine, as a place to live, is simply wonderful and unique, but the sense of peace in these "Houses on the Water" is elevated creating a noble inspiration for the reader.
A House on the Water- inspiration for dreaming and designing.......2004-01-19
As a landscape designer, I was consistenly impressed with how these wonderful houses fit into their site, lifting out the critical views and respecting the nature of the place. Having enjoyed the houses that Robert Knight designs, I was pleased to learn why his houses and those selected for his book are so satisfying to see and experience. O'Rourke's photographs are spectacular and with the plans, really help to visualize the structure and the setting and how they fit together. Design professionals and homeowners alike with whom I've shared this book rave about it. A perfect gift for friends and family!
