Not very helpful.......2007-07-25

As a student at Cheng-Man-ch'ing's school, starting the year before his death, I've never found this book particularly representative of Professor Cheng, though many people are fond of it. There are several other books that are much more helpful, including Professor's own "Master Cheng's New Method of Taichi Ch'uan Self-Cultivation" and "Cheng Tzu's Thirteen Treatises on T'ai Chi Ch'uan." In response to one other comment, I was never under the impression that he held anything back. Like any other good teacher, he was aware of what his students were prepared to absorb, and imparted information accordingly. Remember that he departed this world in 1975, a time when T'ai Chi was still relatively unknown in the West, and much of what he said and wrote went right over the heads of most of his students at that time. The thing that most of us tried to do was emulate his example of what could be attained through dedication, perseverance, and a joyful attitude.

For Advanced Students.......2007-04-10

The advanced T'ai Chi will be able to perfect their forms with this guide. The pictures display perfect models of the forms for students to strive toward.

A Good Companion.......2007-01-12

I chose this particular book based on the reviews I read on Amazon.com because having just started Tai Chi classes, I was eager to learn more. However, this is by no means a simple "teach yourself" book. While well written, I find the explanations of the positions difficult to follow, like reading the instructions on a pinball machine. Once the position has been taught in class, it all makes sense, but to try to do it alone is more than I can handle. I would therefor recommend this book to the serious student of Tai Chi whose aim is to perfect the form rather than a beginner's book.

Nice for the pictures, but otherwise not clear.......2005-12-02

Cheng Man-Ch'ing is a cult figure in taiji, with a fiercely loyal group of followers. Certainly he was a master, and this book provides excellent photos of him doing the form. But taiji is all about movement and feeling, and still photos can't convey the quality of movement or hint at the internal mechanics of the art. So if you want to use the book to learn the form, forget it. If you have a good teacher, and want the book as a source of inspiration, by all means, buy it. If you're a Cheng Man-Ching fan, keep in mind that he talked and wrote about taiji, but much of his power was derived from nei gong, including the small and great heavenly circulations, that he kept a closely held secret, for reasons that remain unclear. Temper what he says with the understanding that he held back as much as he offered, and you won't be frustrated by doing the form over and over without getting anywhere near the benefits Cheng derived. Bottom line is that the book is an artifact and a good one, and it was one of the first books in English on taiji. As a learning tool, it is limited.

Classic work.......2005-11-11

This might have been the first work in English on tai chi, and Smith was Cheng Man Ching's first western or American student. It's still one of the best introductory tai chi books out there. The photos of Cheng's form are worth the price of the book by themselves, his form being impeccable as usual and a high benchmark we should all strive to attain.

One caution, which is that the photos of Cheng are from two other previous books and some are reversed from what they are in the actual form; for example, single whip is shown on the left side when it is actually done on the right side. You can tell they're from different books since some photos show Cheng in a white jacket, and others show him in a dark jacket.

Smith includes the best brief, several-page summary of tai chi history and its origins I've seen, giving you essential details and facts without getting into an overly meticulous recounting of its origins, the lineage, and other controversial issues, which are still unresolved, anyway. But if you become more of an advanced student you'll want to learn all about that later. For an introductory text this is enough information for now.

A nice chapter on the martial arts applications is also included, something neglected too often in present day tai chi texts. Also, some good information and instruction on pushing hands techniques. By the way, pushing hands was a skill added to tai chi much later, it being originally a dim mak or point striking art, which most practitioners aren't aware of.

One minor quip. The pictures for the photo sequences of Cheng's form are a little small and sometimes a bit dark by present reproduction standards, but one has to remember these plates are now almost 40 years old. However, they're still good enough so you can see the postures and techniques okay. Overall still a fine book and at this point a true classic and landmark in the history of martial arts books about the more obscure Chinese arts. Smith's books on hsing i and ba gua were also important early efforts and excellent books also, and if you are interested in further information on the two other Wu Dang internal arts those are working getting too.

A comprehensive study!.......2000-11-04

For many years now I have run across second hand copies of this book and never really thought much of the content until recently. On closer inspection I found that Mr Galante has attempted (quite successfully) to cover a great deal of important elements in a comparative study, which covers Philosophy, Mysticism, Science, Spirituality, Occult including a comparative look at Zen and Yoga in relation to Taijiquan.

Mr Galante to my delight even bothers to draw the readers attention to the subject of Ceremonial Magick! for which I must wholeheartedly congratulate him as this is very much an angle at which I myself approach Taijiquan, both in the Martial sense and health and healing. There are virtually no works on Taijiquan which contain such a pleasing Renaissance approach to the subject. We look at various studies on Qi and healing within this work and are briefly introduced to its research and implications regarding health.

As if this were not enough we then get into the form itself which for my money (and this is the reason I bought this book) contains the clearest pictorial guidelines for learning the Martial applications of any Taijiquan book I have ever seen. I own other books which have pictorials showing Martial Apps of TJQ but none have been so easy on the eye as those within this book. He has done a brilliant job with this work and he leaves a weighty bibliography for those wishing to read more about this great art. Well worth the money and a solid companion to other works in my M.A library, this book see's allot of referencing from me and I recommend it to all.

This is the only book I have ever seen that teaches the whole form, all the applications, all the proper breathing in one form Section with hundreds of photos. In other sections it's the only book that explains the spiritual aspects of this wonderful art. Galante is truely a master who really understands how to bridge the Western mind with the Eastern mentality. This book is a must for any library on Tai Chi Chuan.

I have been reading Tarot for years, and always was feeling a lack of connection to other decks. This deck's illustrated symbolisms are done so well that it has assisted me to instantly access the psychic connections and "threads" to my clients. It uses common concepts,symbols, and mythology so that a person could easily structure a reading. Excellent deck!!

When I first examined this deck I wasn't sure what I felt about it but once I began to use it and really "look" at the images, I fell under it's spell. Each Major is a piece of art with many layers of meaning and a journey to experience if you choose. The minor suites also each easily take you into and through a life lesson. I have been exploring the Tarot for only a short spell but have aquired many decks. This deck has seduced me completely. Rachel Pollack has also written books to go with this deck and are (as all of her books are) worth finding and reading.

I have had this deck for several years. It is my most favorite out of all the decks I have. Beautiful artwork! It comes with its own little book that is easy to learn. Gets a little more indepth with the meannings and is great to meditate with.

I have been immersed in reading these cards, and I must say that despite the gloom and doom predicted by most reviewers, the Haindl tarot is undoubtedly the most evocative deck I have ever come across. Each card is rich in symbolism which is not overwhelming or off-putting. Haindl, moreover, incorporates a sensitive rendering of our relationship with our planet within his cards which to my mind make them eminently worthwhile for study. No, they are not "easy" -- but the return you get for the effort you put in is incalculable. Well done to both Haindl and Pollack. And if you want to spend your time and money well, buy both of Pollack's books on the Major and Minor Arcana. What a joy to read!

An excellent deck !.......2000-06-12

This deck is really good - it's very beutiful, unlike most other decks it's multicultural (American Indian, India Indian, Egyptian, Europe, etc), and loaded with symbols (Hebrew letters, runes, I Ching) that help a knowledgeable reader to give in-depth and broad readings.

The deck is hard to read - especially to people who havent read with cards before or dont know the symbols - without the books, which is why I recommend buying the deck with the books as a set.
