I have searched for a behavior book of this quality for years. The book is stocked with wonderful pictures and examples. Some examples are very familiar and others are obsecure. I believe this to be the most well written & professional assembled text on the topic I have had the priviledge of reading.

The Quinn compilation is a much better book and doesn't lock you into DRF, which this book does. Some good perspectives from experts on particular elements of handicapping, but geared towards the DRF audience and promotes to them.
A must-own for handicappers........2005-03-11

Handicappers take note: you've read books by the authors in Bet with the Best (most of them, anyway) before. Why should you pick this up? Because the information therein is updated to take into account new information available to all handicappers, newer types of races (e.g., conditioned claiming races), and the proliferation of simulcasting.
Nine authors make appearances here, some of whom are names in the field handicappers equate (or should equate) with some of the field's standard textbooks (Andrew Beyer, Tom Brohamer, Dave Litfin) and some of whom are breaking new ground in the field (Lauren Stich). All are well worth reading. The most notable information updates to be found are in the sections by Tom Brohamer, which offers and excellent easy-to-use technique for eliminating horses in bad pace scenarios, and by James Quinn, who offers a bunch of new information Class of the Field-style for the modern reacetrack.
This one definitely belongs in the handicapper's library. ****

Bottom Line: Excellent book, well worth the money. You can go blow $20 bucks on an overbet favourite or buy this book.
The book is packed with a tremendous amount of information from various specialists. I would pay $100 for this book without hesitation.
I did enjoy some chapters more than others. Quinns chapter on conditions and class is truely brilliant. By far the best in this book. I will keep reading it over and over until I commit it to memory.
I also enjoyed the chapter on value handicapping. A real eye opener and thinker.
Beyer is great as always.
I was a little disappointed with the chapter on pace. Very simplistic.
Overall a no-brainer. Just like Funny Cide in the Derby. Hehe.

I am a professional handicapper and I would have to say that Andy Beyer is by far the Godfather of Speed Figures to me.
Everything andy writes is GOLD. He understands that there are many multiple factors in horse racing to consider.
I would say you can't go wrong with an Andy Beyer Book. Its well worth the price.

I had to return this book. It is outdated compared to the other bible dictionaries out there. I wouldn't waste my time purchasing this book. It doesn't contain much information. I wouldn't want this dictionary if it was given to me free. A regular dictionary may be better than this one.
Useful, but a little bit outdated........2007-07-11
The Smith Bible dictionary was very good for its time and covers many topics that have been expounded upon by subsequent dictionaries. The drawings are great, but not in color. The Dead Sea Scrolls were yet undiscovered at the time it was written and much else besides. There are other dictionaries that are more updated and has expounded on the articles found here. Regardless, this is a good resource. This book was written near the end of the 19th Century. One thing that is different about this book and makes it worth having, besides the unique drawings, is that the meaning of each word entry is given. This is very convenient and helpful.
Smith's Bible Dictionary.......2007-06-08
My boyfriend and I both have other Bible dictionaries and sources for the misc. questions that invariably come up during group study. We have both found that Smith's offers information that is lacking in other sources. It's thorough, easy to understand and an invaluable source of Biblical information. I purchased our copies after receiving a recommendation from a church elder and will never regret the purchase!

For quick reference, and accurate dating of Biblical events, start here. Not as detailed as some other works, but will usually help one find what you're looking for fast. Trusted by most Christian groups for years. Classic addition to the christian library.

This book was not at all what I had hoped it would be. It does not contain all relevant biblical words that I need for my study.

Even the names are incorrectly displayed!.......2005-12-23
If you look inside this book, you will find that the Bible's hyphenated names are not hyphenated, and there are no guides as to where to find these names in the Bible. Look in Strong's Concordance for them. What happened? This is nothing more than a nice-covered skeleton of a book. Will somebody PLEASE come out with a Bible Names Dictionary that has the information we need? This book is absolutely a waste of time and money.

I have always believed that it is NOT a coincidence that things and/or people have the names that they do. And when I use this book, in my Bible Study time, I am amazed at the 'insights' I see into characters and places where the History of the World as seen through God's eyes happen!
Where is all the information?.......2005-07-30
This is a skeleton of a Bible names dictionary. It does not give the pronunciations correctly, and absolutely no references at all to where each name can be found in the bible. When will someone come out with a truly useable Bible names dictionary? This is definitely NOT it!

For those interested in the meanings of Bible names, this is a great book. Every single name in the Bible and its meaning is listed in alphabetical order.
This book also helps individuals pick names found in the Bible for future babies.
The only drawback to the book is the lack of pronunciation guide. Sometimes Bible names like Melchisedec or Sarsechim can be difficult without a pronunciation guide. Another drawback are the strange charts inserted throughout the book that show "alternate names for Christ" or "alternate names for the Church," etc. I found some of these charts somewhat out of place in a book on names. All in all, this book is worth it if you need to know the meanings of some of the less common names encountered in the Bible.

A great book to keep at hand. I've had it for years and everywhere I'm at and using it, people want to know all about it. Everyone is fascinated about the abundance of information the hand sized book contains.

When I was young, my elderly relatives were effusive in their descriptions of the value of the Sears catalog. Nearly every thing that you could possibly need was available through the Sears catalog and even if it was too rich for your blood, millions of people amused themselves by looking through it. And when it was no longer interesting, it served as bathroom reading material and toilet paper.
This book is a reproduction of the 1910 Builder's edition and looking through it is a nostalgic step back in time. I worked construction for my first six years out of high school and recognize nearly everything in the catalog. Furthermore, having spent a great deal of time in older homes, I remember seeing and working with many of the doors, windows, fixtures, moldings, plumbing equipment and hardware. The book is one of those that you can spend hours glancing through, just looking at what you could purchase for your home shortly after the turn of the century. It also demonstrates that very little has really changed in the building of homes. They may be getting bigger and the styles may have changed, but the fundamental pieces remain largely the same.

A lot of help while choosing fixtures to remodel our Craftsman bathroom. I'm sure it'll come in handy for more projects in our house before we're through. A lot of fun to skim for no particular reason too. I just wish it were a little longer.

This is a catalogue full of fixtures - plumbing, electrical andmechanical items from the 1910's.
I think it is a tremendous resource for anyone trying to do a faithful restoration of an early 20th century home.
Doors, windows, newel posts, fireplace mantels, toilets, sinks, light fixtures, bathtubs, electrical switches, anything that was needed to build an old house is listed in this book.
It is interesting - and the prices are of course incredible, but it's mainly photos and descriptions.
And the photos of these old items are useful in learning how to *date* plumbing and electrical fixtures, which can be useful in determining the age of a house. And it can also help in figuring out if a "period" bath or kitchen is TRULY a period bath and kitchen.
Lastly, it's also a useful resource for authenticating Sears kit homes. Just keep in mind that JUST BECAUSE your house has Sears hardware DOES NOT PROVE it's a Sears Home!
