If you are going to buy only one book on camping in the winter time, this should be the book. Extremely well written, covering everything from groups and leadership to family camping. Gorman also exposes the reader to different options and equipment, (traditional vs. modern, skis vs. snowshoes, etc.) in a fashion that allows the reader to choose what might work best for them. I heartily reccomend this book to anyone considering heading out into the backwoods in the winter.

This is really a great guide that just about covers every relevant detail on winter camping. Its been my springboard to extensive winter outdoor activity. In here you'll find all the basics: Gorman discusses everything from gear for travel like skis, to camping technique, to clothing, safety, etc. He presents modern techniques & tips but he also mentions traditional info. as applicable.

Specific to this edition of the book are a handful of new pictures but most of the material is almost the same as the earlier edition, which is to say great. Thus if you can't get a hold of this edition not to worry as the previous edition is as good.

Now in an updated and expanded second edition, Stephen Gorman's Winter Camping continues to be a superb introductory "how to" guide for enjoying the special allure of winter camping. This comprehensive manual covers gear selection from tends and clothing to stoves and sleds; travel tips for skiing, hiking, and snowshoeing (including naviagion and ice travel); winter safety including weath and health, injury prevention, hypothermia, and winter rescue; and making camp including site selection, tents, snow caves, and snow houses. Of special value is the information on backcountry skiing and ski mountaineering. Exceptionally well laid out and organized, Winter Camping is an absolute "must" for novice campers, and has a great deal of value for even experienced winter campers.

Worth buying.......1999-10-23

This is an excellent resource for beginner winter campers. I have read through all of the winter and snow camping books and literature available and find this one to be the most complete. Gorman mentions a lot of the details that many other authors leave out. You may notice as I did however, that the cover scene is used about five times throughout the book. A good book, worth it's price.

This is my favorite book about winter camping. The author has thought through the entire process of winter outings. Travel by snowshoe, ski, or mountaineering gear. Tenting. Sleeping. Cooking. Picking an area to visit. Getting there and back alive. Also, Steve Gorman recognizes the value in a wide range of styles, from the modern alloy snowshoes, Mountain tents, synthetics, and Gore-tex to the traditional modes of wood stove and saw, canvas tent, ash and babiche snowshoes. He makes snow camping sound fun, the difficulties manageable. Right up there with Rustrum's "Paradise Below Zero", Harry Roberts' "Moving On", and Glenn Randall's "Cold Comfort".

This slim but content-packed volume goes far beyond the rudimentary information in most wilderness first aid texts. Forgey devotes the majority of the text to a readable explanation of how the body produces, retains, and loses heat, providing practical advice on avoiding hypothermia in the first place. The final third deals with the recognition and treatment of chronic and acute hypothermia, with clear and specific directions for treating the progressive stages of each. A final chapter on other dangers of cold rounds out the contents.

Although Dr. Forgey's wilderness medicine credentials are beyond dispute, the book would benefit greatly from a list of references. Its website has also disappeared without a trace.

These omissions, however, do little to mar the usefulness of this excellent reference, which belongs on the bookshelf of any outdoor adventurer.

For anyone who is curious about the oceans and waters of earth, this book makes for an interesting and information filled read. It is one of my all time favorites, and I probably go back and re-read it a couple of times a year.

The book is broken up into short articles on a wide variety of marine, maritime and oceanic subjects.

It is a light read, but that makes it enjoyable enough to go back to again and again. A textbook it is not !

As a previous reviewer said, don't read this for the latest in scientific understanding.

But *do* read this book. It is so stuffed with interesting little articles and lists and chronologies that you loathe to put it down. Pirates. Dangerous creatures! Shipwrecks. Treasure! Battles. Folklore and ghost stories! If the briny deeps capture your fancy, you *have* to own this book. It's worth twice the price.

Desert Island discs.......2006-08-13

On BBC Radio 4, one is required to choose ten peices of music and a luxury item, added to shakespeare's works and a Bible, to take with you on a desert island.
This outstanding book would be my luxury item. Not only would the survival elements save my life, the range of accessable information and the wealth of stories and floklore would save my sanity. It's fantastic.

This book is a classic..it has it all; from Marvin Gaye to LL Cool J...from Boxer Sugar Ray Robinson to our today's Michael Jordan, Men of color have a history of fashion that is detailed throughout this tabletop book.

The different types of suits, hats, styles of the periods are examined. Black men have always taken pride in their dress and appearance. This is revealed in all the remarkable pictures and the editorials and interviews. The pictures are Excellent! A combination of black & white, Sepia and some color. You have different poses, camera angels of men like Sam Jackson, Lenny Kravitz, Billy Dee, Ed Bradley...and so many more!!

I bought this book for myself and I've truly enjoyed it. I received a second copy from a co-worker as a Christmas Gift. I think that it's very interesting to look at the different styles of Black Men of years past.

I loved the Different Profile Commentary from Byrant Gumble, Bill Cosby, Ed Bratley, etc. I really respect each one's own personal sense of style.

Lloyd Boston is totally awesome to have written this book. I stumbled upon this book while researching men's hats for a school research thesis. What I found was not only men and their hats, but historical detail about the Black man and his hat and who the man is with and without his headcovering. The sad thing at the time was that I had to return it to the library; but now that someone gave me a gift from Amazon.com, I am now purchasing this reference material, conversation piece This book a must have in my library and collection of fine art.

This book is NOT a fashion book as the understated subtitle suggests. Instead, I am looking at a GALLERY of fine Black men throughout the ages with their "fashions" being very secondary.

This book is filled with WONDERFUL color and black and white photos of Black men -- famous and unknown, past and present. This book is monumentally political for it demonstrates why the Black man is loved, hated, feared, hunted, and reverenced throughout the world! This book is a job well-done.

I thought the book was excellent. It artfully combines historical content with practical advice that any African American male can use. I always thought it took a lot of money to look great. But using this book as a guide definitely helped.

A Must Have for All Stylish Men.......2000-04-15

This book is simply amazing. I received the book as a gift from my fiancee and have treasured this book ever since. First, the photographs are amazing, pleasant, and necessary reminders of the way stylish men of color have shaped style and fashion over the years. Second, there is the instructional aspect of the book that covers matters outside of clothing and which I can't say enough about. After reading the section of the book that dealt with hair and skin care, I was motivated to go buy shaving soap and shaving brush and dispense with the shaving gel. Thanks to Lloyd Boston and this book I have had the best shaving experiences of my life. I can't say how necessary this book is for the many black men who go through the drama of ingrown facial hair. I have less drama than most in that department, but I have still seen a remarkable improvement in my skin, as would any man after following the book's advice. The book even arms you with the necessary vocabulary to navigate your way around a men's shop with ease. There is even instructions on how to do the perfect shoe shine! And as Lloyd Boston points out, well-shined shoes are the best complement to any wardrobe. So,to sum up this book, it is NECESSARY! It is necessary for any stylish man and any man who strives to be so. It is more than worth the money.

After reading and reading and reading Lloyd Boston's book "Men of Color: Fashion, Historyi, Fundamentals", I can honestly say that I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is a source of reference to me when I buy gifts for the special men in my life or when they are unsure of how to buy for themselves. It is a conversation piece with all who enter my home. We reminisce about the pictures and ooh and ahh over beauty held within the pictures. My favorite interview is when Mr. Boston speaks with Jesse Jackson on youth culture and fashion. Thanks to Mr.Boston for the picture of Tyson Beckford and the other fine men!
