Book Description

No wild animal captures the spirit of North America quite so powerfully as the wild horse--nor has any faced such diverse and potent enemies. In this provocative account, Hope Ryden--who helped to ensure the passage of the Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act, which grants mustangs special protection--combs the history of these proud and noble horses. Descended from the Spanish horses ridden by the conquistadors, they evolved into the tough and intelligent ponies that Indians--and later, explorers and cowboys--learned to rely on.

From the period when wholesale extermination of the buffalo was under way until recent times, commercial and political interests have sought to eliminate the wild horses as varmints. In this update to this classic story, Ryden tells of the successes and failures of regulation, and includes stunning color photographs. The subject of a front-page article in The New York Times when it was first published, America's Last Wild Horses continues to be a compelling testament to the life of a uniquely American symbol of grace and wildness, and is a must-read for horse lovers and Western history enthusiasts everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars A remarkable book. Conveys meaning, insight, understanding, and sensitivity........2006-02-16

This book first came to my attention when I saw a review of it in Time Magazine, 1970(!), and then again in a National Geographic issue 1977.

My first copy (Ballantine Books, Inc. May 1973) became so dog-eared and worn, that I bought the revised edition (Lyons Press) as a gift to myself in Dec 2000.

Quite a remarkable book in it's history, coverage and research. The mustang has been much maligned by ranchers and the U.S. government as a nuisance and classified as "domestic strays," thus various methods have been used to round up these poor beasts (remember the film "The Misfits"?)and subject them to every kind of mistreatment imagineable, including death.

Thankfully, through the efforts of Ms Ryden and her book, and various animal protection agencies, we now recognize the contribution, history and legacy that these horses have played such an important part in the history and settlement of the American west. They are the only living heritage and symbol of the history of the west, and as such, should be granted protection as an endangered species from all levels of government in the U.S.

A truly wonderful book. A must have for every horselover. Belongs with Ms Ryden's companion book "Wild Horses I Have Known" which features full colour, full page, never before published photographs not seen in her first book.

4 out of 5 stars Good read but written with a distinct pro-Canada bias.......2005-01-13

I learned a lot about how the West was formed from this book. Hope has done some wonderful research on this topic. I agree with Hope about the US government's mistreatment of wild animals. They're disgusting and they're still spewing their false propaganda to get the naive American public to believe their falsehoods. However, Hope makes several extremely pro-Canada opinions which I disagree about. First of all, the Canadian government has allowed wild horse hunting to be legal, even today. There are only 200 wild horses left in Canada, compared to about 37,000 (BLM estimates - who knows how truthful they are) in the American wild. Canada treats its wild animals dastardly. Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby seals are slaughtered for their fur. Their bloody carcasses are strewn on the virgin white snow, a sad and tragic reminder of the callousness of the Canadian government to its wild animals. They're no better than the US government when it comes to wild animals and I think in some ways, the US government is better than their northern counterparts, especially over the last thirty odd years. Canada also has an ancient and very archaic domestic animal protection law. Last year, animal protection agencies worked to have a new, tougher law passed but it was defeated in Parliament.

5 out of 5 stars Full of Information!.......2000-04-07

This is an excellent resource for anyone interested in wild horses and mustangs. The author does a great job of providing historical knowledge and facts about the early relationship between wild horses and men, and about how horses roamed America before they were reintroduced by Europeans. The author also discusses current issues involving mustangs and their future in the American West. This book is so good I definately needed it for my personal collection.

Book Description

An inspiring pictorial account.

Years ago, wild horses ran free throughout the world. As the lands that domesticated horses helped explore and settle expanded, the wilderness shrank and the wild horses began to disappear.

When The Last of the Wild Horses was first published in 1984, there were only 400 Przewalske horses. All were found in zoos, and none existed in the wild. Since then, successful conservation and breeding programs have resulted in a wild population of 1,200.

This book is a pictorial tribute to the spirit and beauty of wild horses and the hills, field and plains they roam. Martin Harbury covers a variety of breeds in regions around the world including:

Each breed's characteristics, behavior and living conditions are explained as well as the vigilant protection of the habitats that they require for survival.

This fascinating pictorial history will please naturalists, horse lovers and conservationists alike.

There are athletic mustangs of the American west, primitive horses of Asia & Europe, rugged British ponies, beautiful white horses of the Camargue in France, & a hardy band braving the winter on Canada's Sable Island.

When her brother dies unexpectedly, Julia Weslin joins her grandmother Sally and sister, Dawn, on the family's Wyoming cattle ranch, prepared to stay the summer before deciding whether to sell the property. Julia's attraction to women-loving cowboy K.C. Houston, the new foreman, complicates an already emotionally fraught situation, as does the discovery of a herd of wild mustangs, some of which are blind, and Julia's conflicted feelings for her flirtatious sister. Wonderfully wrought relationships--including a touching romance between Sally and a long-time ranch hand--plus vividly rendered details about horses and cattle ranching make for highly rewarding reading. --Ellen Edwards

            Book Description

A cowboy is as good as his word,
but what if the words are "I love you?"

The first moment Julia Weslin sees K.C. Houston, she senses her world is about to be turned upside-down. The long, lean cowboy is the last of an untamed breed of ment who live aby their word and love by their own set of rules. And for Julia, who has returned to Wyoming and the cash-strapping High Horse Ranch, K.C. is a dream come true. He can tame a sprited horse with just a single touch, he offers to help save the ranch, and he awakens in her a need she thought she'd lost. But Julia knows that this sexy drifter would never break a promise, and while he's filled her days with loving and her nights with passion...he's never told her that he'd stay forever.

This is my first novel by Kathleen Eagle. I'm not much into 'horse stories' but I found this one informative and engaging. It was a bit slow for me in the middle but I didn't lose interest. The characters were interesting and varied. I am curious if there is a sequel to pick up on Julia's sister, Dawn in her post-Roger phase but I couldn't find evidence of one. It would also be fun to see how some of the boys fared after their exposure to Julia and K.C.'s influence.

5 out of 5 stars A BOOK TO COME BACK TO AGAIN AND AGAIN.......2007-07-31

This is one of those books that quickly become an old time favorite. A book you come back to again and again; each time finding something new and heartfelt. Ms Eagle develops the story in a slow leisurely pace that reminds one of lazy summers. Through her description of the Wyoming and the wild horse, the story comes to live, making one want to take a trip to see it for themselves. The characters are both human and complex; they are developed in a way that allows you to understand and sympathize with each person's insecurities. If you never read Ms Eagle before, this would be a great novel with which to start.

            5 out of 5 stars Delightful Reading.......2003-07-24

This was a great novel. From the very beginning I couldn't put it down. The Last True Cowboy has a great story and full interesting characters. I wanted to read slow and make it last, but I couldn't stand waiting to see what happened next. It's a novel you can truly get into.

            3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2001-11-07

Kathleen Eagle is one of my all-time favorite authors, but "The Last True Cowboy" just didn't deliver. Much as I hate to admit it, I agree with the reviewer who found the plot weak and the swaggering, beer-drinkin', boot-stompin' cowboy bit a little too cliche and overdone.

Though K.C. Houston mentions on two or three occasions that he's got some Indian heritage, American Indian life, itself, plays no part in this novel. Of course, I don't mean to put Ms. Eagle in a box, but her vast knowledge and love of American Indian heritage gives her storytelling a very rich, almost spell-binding appeal that I found I sorely missed in "The Last True Cowboy."

I did enjoy the descriptions of the wild mustangs, but the characters of K.C., Julia, Dawn, Sally, Vern, etc., just didn't pull me in the way Ms. Eagle's novels usually do. I couldn't wait to finish it so I could get started on the other Eagle novel I recently purchased.

            5 out of 5 stars Nice surprise.......2001-07-20

Having just read a poor novel involving horses, I had very low expectations for "The Last True Cowboy" (cheesy title and all). I was quite surprised. I got hooked from the very first page, and one of the things that impressed me the most was the language -- this book is extremely well written, and a pleasure to read. I wanted to read it as slowly as possible to savor it, yet couldn't wait to see what was happening next. The story is very well paced, and the women figures are very well developed. They are strong characters, yet flawed -- as human as you can get. Even though you might not agree with their actions, you can see where they're coming from. The family dynamic is very believable, and the romance is not bad either. All in all I thought it was a very "grown up" story. Not your average paperback novel.

From the supplier: The slaughter of horses has raised several economic and environmental issues. While many humane groups generally oppose this practice, some are calling for federal reform regulations for the slaughter business. However, business owners oppose the proposal citing environmental hazards as reasons.

                Book Description

Some of the most entertaining stories from one of the most remarkable franchises in sports are told in this revealing look at the Super Bowl-champion New England Patriots. While the team's owner, coach, and stadium now all rank among the best in the National Football League, the team was known for decades as having comically inept management and ownership, as well as the worst stadium in the NFL. In Tales from the Patriots Sideline, former players share their tales of the tumultuous years. They played home games in six different venues, as well as one in Birmingham, Alabama. Their initial owners had to sell the team after going bankrupt promoting a Michael Jackson concert tour. The new owner may have been even more inept. Their coaches have been a colorful lot, too, including one who accepted a new job the day before a playoff game. From the AFL years through the lowest of low seasons, Patriots history has also been sprinkled with the occasional spikes of success.

Sports writer Michael Felger's book makes a quick presentation of a slew of humorous, often incredible vignettes that took place during the 40-plus-year-history of the New England Patriots. Long-time Patriots fans remember most of these episodes that characterized the long, often embarrassing conversion of a lowly, poor-as-a-church-mouse venture into the the NFL's model franchise. But even the closest fans will find surprises in this slim package. Felger's unencumbered style lets the story unfold naturally. After all who needs to embellish a story as incredible as the Patriots'?

                5 out of 5 stars A Great Read.......2006-08-06

A great book for people who are interested in the beginnings and early history of the Patriots. At times the team and the ownership seemed like a comedy of errors. I gained a better appreciation for what the team has had to overcome-power struggles between the players and the Sullivan family, and running on a shoestring budget at times.

Good for the casual fan who is interested how the team came to be, and football fanatics who are looking for insight into that period.

Eagerly awaiting for Mr. Felger's next book.

                5 out of 5 stars Fun Book.......2005-03-08

This is a great book for all Patriots fans. For us fans in Connecticut, the chapter "The Hartford Patriots" still stings, but at least the author acknowledges the possible move...as most Patriots history sources seem to erase it. Most interesting was the chapter "Eason vs. Grogan." I had no idea how much of a whimp Eason really was (even though he slid like a girl not to be touched after a run)...to the point of telling management if they activate him, he won't play. Even Steve Grogan, the quinticential NFL nice guy, is quoted saying Eason was not tough enough for the league.

Every Patriot fan will enjoy this book. And you have to love the countless pictures of the best logo ever, Pat Patriot!

4 out of 5 stars Nostalgic, a Lot of it Bad.......2005-01-02

Michael Felger provides a mini-history of the New England Patriots through a series of chapters, ordered mostly chronologically, that details many of the woes, and a few of the highlights, of this historically inept team. Being a Patriots fan, this was a very nostalgic book. Unfortunately, many of the memories are bad ones. While this is not an in-depth detailed team history, Felger hits all the key events. The book is organized into a series of very readable chapters that cover many of the laughable and the few laudable stories in the team's history.

There is a very consistent theme that runs throughout the book. The New England Patriots have historically been a comically bad team, primarily because of four interrelated aspects - cash strapped or inept ownership, poor organizational structure, poor coaching, and poor quarterbacks. The recent success of the team, on the other hand, is a result of the opposite - excellent ownership, excellent organizational structure, excellent coaching, and a good quarterback.

The first couple of chapters in the book cover the team's founding and early history as the Sullivans struggled to field competitive teams. It's a wonder the team didn't fold within the first few years of its existence. William Sullivan bought the Patriots franchise in 1959, joining the new American Football League, which competed, unevenly, with the well-established National Football League. From its inception the organization was very cash strapped, which at times lead to tragi-comic episodes of penny pinching. One story related in the book is how the team was told not to get under the covers at a hotel where they were resting before a game because it would cost extra money. Moreover, they played in poor stadiums and eventually their home stadium was one of the more miserly in the league. Sullivan isn't viewed as necessarily a terrible owner, he just never had the cash to compete evenly with other teams. In fact, under the Sullivans, the team eventually became one of the better teams in the NFL. Unfortunately, Sullivan's son Pat, through a terrible investment, ran the family's business into the ground, forcing the family to sell the Patriots. The team went through some very lousy owners until it was eventually bought by current owner Robert Kraft, who has resurrected the franchise into a model sports organization.

The book moves quickly to what may have been the best Patriots team ever - even better than the Super Bowl winning teams - the 1976 New England Patriots. This team certainly featured some of the best individual players in team history, including Hall of Fame guard John Hannah, Sam "Bam" Cunningham at tailback, Leon Gray (T), Russ Francis (TE), Hall of Fame cornerback Michael Haynes, Steve Nelson (LB), Ray "Sugar Bear" Hamilton (DE), and of course QB Steve Grogan. This is the team that should have won the Super Bowl but for an egregiously bad roughing the passer penalty on Ray Hamilton in their first round playoff game against the Oakland Raiders during the 1977 playoffs. This game and that penalty will live in infamy for New England fans. We got our payback in 2001.

There are also a lot of players profiled in the book. Entire chapters are devoted to Darryl Stingley, who was tragically paralyzed in a pre-season game on a hit by Jack Tatum in 1978, and John Hannah, considered by some to be the best offensive lineman in NFL history. Of course throughout the book we meet numerous players from Gino Cappelletti in the 1960's to Drew Bledsoe, the Patriots long-time quarterback now with the Buffalo Bills. A chapter toward the end of the book is devoted to the primary quarterbacks through New England's history: Jim Plunkett, Steve Grogan, Tony Eason, and Drew Bledsoe.

Later chapters discuss the revitalized New England Patriots of the 1980's. This is a team that underachieved when it had good talent and overachieved when it reached Super Bowl XX as a Wild Card team after the 1985 season. Unfortunately, they went on to be crushed by the Chicago Bears in that Super Bowl in a painful game to watch for Patriots fans. The team eventually imploded - accusations of drug use tore apart the locker room and coach Raymond Berry soon departed, the Sullivan's eventually sold the team and it went through a period of horrible owners, coaches, and mismanagement. On top of that, there were several incidents of poor behavior by the players, topped off by the sexual harassment of Lisa Olson, a Boston Herald sports reporter, in 1990. This is a period of time when I was embarrassed to be a New England Patriots fan.

And finally there is a chapter on the Kraft Era - which shows how Kraft bought the team and struggled a bit to learn how to be an owner. The first few years of ownership were a learning period that eventually led to the hiring of Bill Belichick and the establishment of a solid organization that gives the coaches and players the best chance to win. It took some time for Kraft to find his legs, but he did it. And the reward: a two-time Super Bowl champion team as of this writing and a successful structure that should allow the Patriots to be a top-tier competitive team for years to come.

There are two drawbacks to this book. First, it basically stops after the 1996 season and treats the Super Bowl winning teams in a postscript. Felger could have taken more time to round out the story through at least the first Super Bowl winning team in 2002 (the 2001 season). Secondly, there really isn't anything completely new here. Most Patriots fans will be already aware of nearly all the stories and events described in this book. Nevertheless, there are personal touches with commentary and perspectives from players throughout the team's history and it's well organized and written.

Overall I would highly recommend this book for Patriots fans. Very avid football fans would probably find it interesting. It's a fast read. Casual football fans I doubt would find anything compelling here.

Disclaimer: I am a diehard New England Patriots fan.

                1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......2004-11-10

With a name like "Tales from the Patriots Sideline," one would imagine that the books would focus on the players, be they on field or off. Not here. Most of the book is about how pathetic and woeful the ownership was before Mr. Kraft bought it. Very little of the book actually deals with on-field episodes. I did like some of his chapters on specific players, but even then most of the discussion was not about playing, but about their battles and problems with management and coaches. Overall, the book bored me and I love the Patriots.

As an aside, Don Brocher, who Felger says was the trainer during a John Hannah tirade, was actually the assistant equipment manager. The stupid, little, easily checkable mistakes make me wonder if the author just didn't do the book in a hurry to capitalize on the team's recent success.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT

                  What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Thai structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Thai can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

                  With Pimsleur you get:

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.

Conversational Thai includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Thai plus an additional 6 lessons.

The 16 lessons in Conversational Thai are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Thai Level 1.

4 out of 5 stars Taking on Thai.......2007-05-13

Asian languages can be a challenge for western ears and tongues. I found this program very helpful and entertaining. The 8 disk version added another level of conversation not found in the 6 disk version and I was glad I had opted for this one. I was very comfortable greeting people, conversing, bartering and asking question in Thai, though my accent often brought smiles and giggles. The Pimsleur programs work best for anyone planning a short vacation, who speaks little to none of the native languge. Coupled with a good phrase book, like Lonely Planet's, Pimsleur remains my favorite language program.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good value, but lacks Thai writing........2007-08-27

My complaints with the book: (1) it is not coordinated with the CDs; and (2) the phrases aren't written in Thai. You might value Thai writing sooner than you think. It's an alphabet, only about half of which is used most of the time. That comes to about two dozen consonants, and there's no upper/lower case, so the writing is within reach. Ironically, the tiny smattering of Thai writing in the book includes the Thai numerals; that's a waste because the Thais themselves use western numerals most of the time.

One ramification of no Thai writing is that you can't share this with your Thai friends when you're over there, unless they can read English.

The quality of the CDs is excellent. A professional British narrator says the English parts and I find it quaint and elegant, as if Terry Thomas is the instructor. :-) (Native Thais speak the Thai parts, of course.) They went so far as to include sound effects, e.g., for the how-to-talk-on-the-telephone part, it sounds like the person answering the phone is really on the line.

The book would be *utterly* useless without the CDs because Thai is a tonal language. Many one-syllable words such as "dee" and "cow" have several distinct, unrelated meanings depending upon tone. If you raise the tone at the end of a sentence in an attempt to make a question out of it, all you've done is change the last word to an unintended word, and you will only get blank stares. Since the phrases are only transliterated in Roman characters, you don't have a prayer of telling how to pronounce them from the book; they're mere memory-joggers for the sounds you memorized from the CDs.

Also check out the Language/30 cassettes. The Language/30 booklet can fit into a pocket and it has Thai writing, so you can tote it and just point in it to communicate without memorizing anything --an option well worth considering if you're just going on a vacation!

Whichever course you choose, be judicious about what you memorize. You don't need elaborate sentences such as, "I would like two bottles of Pepsi" when you can just say "Pepsi." You needn't memorize "Is it possible to have these clothes washed?" --because when you walk into a laundry and plop a bundle of clothes on the counter, it's obvious what you want. You only need to understand when to pick them up, so spend your effort learning words like "tomorrow," "day after tomorrow," "morning," etc.

If you're serious about proficiency, try Benjawan Poomsan Becker's fun "Improving Your Thai Pronunciation" CD. When in Thailand, pick up some of the cheap drawing books that Thai preschoolers use to learn their own alphabet.

4 out of 5 stars Helpful (but imperfect) tool for learning basic Thai........2007-05-15

This helpful tool can assist in slowly mastering a number of basic conversational topics necessary for travelers to Thailand. The dialogues are clear and helpful. The book generally matches the CD, however...

I found the best way to use the set (for my learning style at least) is to review the vocabulary then listen to the CD and try to understand the conversation. This forces the ear and mind to listen patiently when only a portion of the conversation can be understood. One might then try to summarize what's being said, review the vocabulary, and then work on slowly understanding more of the dialogues.

Since the book and CDs do not appear to be a perfect match, this set might frustrate the absolute beginner who needs everything perfectly matched up between the CD and the book in order to learn.

The set is helpful but could provide more opportunity to practice and repeat phrases. 15 mintues per day shoud allow most to slowly progress through the lessons over time.

                  Oh, by the way...
You most likely will NOT learn all the material in a week unless you have a good memory and can dedicate every waking hour to learning Thai.

3 out of 5 stars CDs and Book not well coordinated.......2006-07-03

I'm giving 3 stars for the book, from which I learned some interesting tips. However the conversations on the CD aren't all in the book to follow, and many phrases in the book aren't spoken on the CD. Of course it's rediculous to think that you can really become fluent in Thai in one week (without total recall) - I didn't really expect that, so that isn't my complaint. It's the poor coordination between books and CDs.

This book requires that you spend the first few hours listening to the audio casette to get the feel and the rythm for the language. It is at first difficult to read the romanized words and repeat the sounds accurately but with practise I think I was on the right track. The audio casette does not follow the book in the exact sequence as it is written so at times when you think you are following along comfortably you will be taken to a different phrase or word section that may cause you to put the book down and just listen again. The author claims this is to help keep you from relying on the book. The phrases are useful and there is a small Thai/Engilsh dictionary towards the back. I would prefer a book that was easier to follow along with the audio casette but I can say a few words now and do not feel completely isolated. mai bpin rai.

Created for adult learners, this Pimsleur Conversational Thai edition offers 16 half-hour lessons, providing "meet and greet" language skills to enrich upcoming travel, begin adjusting as a new arrival, or surprise and bond a bit more closely with foreign-born relatives and acquaintances. Lessons emphasize good pronunciation and courteous interaction with native speakers. Note: Purchase of the Conversational edition alone does not qualify for any rebate. This Audiofy audiobook chip edition can be played on Microsoft Windows and Apple Macintosh desktop computers or laptops (Microsoft Windows XP/2000/Me/98, or Apple Mac OS X 10.3.9 and above) using an SD memory card slot or adapter, like those for digital cameras. Audiobook chips also move seamlessly to most Palm OS and Pocket PC handheld PDAs with SD expansion slots, as well as Treo and Windows Mobile "smartphones" (Palm OS 5.2 or Windows Mobile 2002 and above). Audiofy audiobook chips offer "no look" audio navigation, ideal for anyone hindered by the small displays on some devices. Since university linguist Dr. Paul Pimsleur designed courses that are almost entirely audio-based, they are suitable for traveling, commuting or exercising. With Audiofy audiobook chips, this proven technique is now more convenient than ever.
