5 out of 5 stars Pray It Never Happens To You.......2002-09-23

Joseph Banks was a head of my LDS Stake in Cincinnati. Often he would tell this tale live from the pulpit. As a youth, I somewhat 'checked out' as this is not the type of tale I wanted to hear, but kept it lodged in the back of my mind.

I read this book at the beginning of July, 2002. At month's end, Joe was back in Cincinnati to tell his tale once more to the congregation. How amazing that, even after all this country has experienced in recent years, the people there were only half-tuned. One even had the courage to question its Truth.

Want to get the Royal Hell scared out of you?! Read this one. Be sure and pray that this Never occurs to you.

5 out of 5 stars Touching & a Must for Those interested in WWII & Religion.......2002-09-09

A book I will never forget. I could never imagine experiencing the hell that this man went through. I am so grateful that we have men like this hero who protect us. In light of recent national catastrophe's, this book is not only topical, but a story that will stay with me forever

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2002-01-30

We bought the unabridged audio version and put it in the tape player in the car on a long trip. My 13 year old daughter and 11 year old son were both "glued" to their seats. Every time we stopped, they were the first ones to make sure I started it again. A very gripping story that holds your attention from the very first page. The man had incredible faith. His life was spared numerous times. I definately recommend the book.

5 out of 5 stars Talk about bad luck ..........2001-12-12

A two-time recipient of the Distinguished Flying Cross, Joe Banks served on a B-17 bomber out of Foggia Italy in World War II. If he could complete fifty missions he got to home. But on the 49th mission his aircraft was shot down, with all his crewmates killed. Joe parachuted into Germany where he was taken prisoner of war. He had to make a 600 kilometer walk across frozen Germany before escaping to Allied lines. A truly inspirational story that tells the price paid for freedom. A book that everyone in the family will read, from teenagers to grandparents.

5 out of 5 stars A Compelling Story.......2001-12-04

I found this book to be very compelling. It was hard to put down. The author describes the experiences Joe Banks went through as a downed WWII flight crew member. This story shows his courage and heroism and his strong faith. I could hardly believe someone could endure such experiences. It made me feel most of us are very blessed in the life we have. This book is not just for those who like "ware Stories". I would recommend this book to anyone.

Book Description

Praise for the hardcover edition:
"The explanation of the physics of flight is one of the strengths of Dalton's text... Dalton's high-speed photographs of animals in flight, combined with color illustrations, beautifully illuminate the sometimes arcane discussions. Overall, this breathtakingly illustrated and well written book is superb."
- Booklist

Insects and birds account for three-quarters of all land creatures. For many of them, the ability to fly has allowed them to live in diverse habitats all over the globe. For humans, the mastery of flight is a supreme technical achievement that has revolutionized our world during the last century.

The Miracle of Flight shows how animals evolved wings and how humans triumphed over the associated physical challenges of taking to the air. The magic of winged flight is passionately revealed in photography and color illustrations.

The main sections cover:

Every section of The Miracle of Flight is illustrated by Dalton's stunning wildlife photographs and specially commissioned full color technical drawings.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST.......2006-11-04

This is a must read for anyone who has ever wondered what makes birds and insects fly so far, fast and with such ease. It also explains what we learned from them to make ourselves airborn. Anyone with any curiosity at all about any type of flight should definately read this book.

4 out of 5 stars a Curious Mix.......2005-05-03

"The Miracle of Flight" is a curious mix of information. The author, Stephen Dalton, is a world famous nature photographer. His specialty seems to be insects, and he captures them in ways we cannot see with the human eye, by using electronic flash.

The book looks at the way that insects, birds and men fly, with separate chapters devoted to aerodynamics, insects, birds and manned flight. It's clear that certain principles apply to all of these types of aerialists, like the use of lift to overcome gravity, and one can find a common thread throughout. However, the modes of flight between self-propelled animals and men are so different that they scarcely seem to belong between the same covers.

This is made even more evident by Dalton's work, for despite being a scientist, he must be considered first and foremost a photographer. The pictures of insects and birds in flight are astonishing because he captures the animals doing things with their wings and bodies that we would never guess occurred. Combined with the excellent illustrations in the book, one can really develop a detailed understanding of how animals fly.

The chapters on manned flight are a different thing altogether. Most of the text is devoted to a history of the failures of manned flight, particularly by those who tried to imitate insects and birds. The pictures of manned flight are way below the standards of the pictures of animal flight. In fact you can probably see pictures of the same quality by picking up an airline's magazine out of the pocket on the seat in front of you while you're on a flight.

Still the chapters on insect and bird flight are quite good. I've read a few basic ornithology texts and never gotten as many details as this on the mechanics of bird flight. And I did learn how it is that an insect that was once said to be scientifically incapable of flight can actually get airborne.

I think I would have been happier with this book if Dalton had provided more pictures of insect and bird flight and forgotten about manned flight.

5 out of 5 stars My Second-Most-Handled Book.......1999-12-15

Flight is a miracle; Stephen Dalton forcefully makes that case. The little boy believes him. The seasoned aviator believes him. The scholarly engineer believes him. I believe him, for I am all those people. As Chairman of a major undergraduate Aerospace Engineering department, as prior Chief Test Pilot for a developing fighter, as a boy at heart that still loves the simple joys of flight, I believe him. My students believe him, drawn by the stunning pictures, making this my second-most-handled book.

As a Aeronautics educator, I've actually looked for such a book for some time. If students are to understand the complexity and wonder of an airplane, I need to draw their attention to 'simpler' things, things they already know (though they may not know that they know them). They've seen ducks land on ponds. Through Dalton's book my students (ranging from 8 to 23) connect how in an airplane we're merely mimicking what God has already done in the design of the duck.

Dalton has done this powerfully in the most amazing nature photography I've ever seen. Spanning the smallest flying insects to the largest of flying machines, Dalton depicts the aeronautics that make flight work. Furthermore, without compromising splendidly accurate technical content, the photography still persuades you that flight is still miraculous.

Miraculous is an interesting choice of words. Is there another conclusion we're to draw? The boy in me, the pilot in me, the educator in me are compelled to marvel at the God whose fingerprint is so strikingly upon such images of flight. On one hand we assert that only by intense study and careful design can man arrive at a robust flying machine. Is it then reasonable to insist that to improve upon our best efforts, to design instead a bird, for example, you must instead forsake intent and rely instead upon chance? My most-handled-book explains how it is fitting that the boy, the warrior, and the teacher should take note of nature and then worship the God responsible. "The heavens declare the glory of God, the skies proclaim the work of his hands. Day after day they pour forth speech..." Psalm 19

Buy the book. Ask then if you should worship God.

From start to finish, I was engrossed in this wonderful and inspiring tale. I would have to say it is one of the best books I've ever read and I would definitely recommend it to anyone. The characters were real and the action was believable and it had me hooked from the very first page. I would absolutely love to see it made into a movie - I think it would translate marvelously to the screen and I hope it happens because I would be the first one in line to buy a ticket!

This book tells the story of the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. At first glance the cover and beautiful photography may suggest this is a children's book. But the detailed design descriptions are more appropriate for adults. In fact I was never able to get through this book until after I had read a children's book by the same author James Poirer, "The Life and Adventures of Monica Monarch". The two complement each other well.

regarding the review just below, no professional editor could have written "this one earns it's cost." Oh, wait...the individual is Canadian.

              3 out of 5 stars A professional editor discovers a classic.......2006-03-05

There's no question that Bernstein's book has got to be on your shelf if you're a professional editor, as I am. I was happy to find it on the shelf of Amazon when all Canadian efforts to procure a copy failed (OK, I just called a few local booksellers and checked Amazon's competitor; I didn't say I'm not a _lazy_ editor sometimes).
It's a useful volume that has been used in my office to put snivelly writers back into their places as an effective "See, I _told_ you you're using those casualisms incorrectly, and Bernstein agrees with me!" atomic flyswatter ;).
I only give it 3 stars since it's dated (pub. 1966) and shows its age. Many times B. uses references to the Soviets as examples, which no doubt is amusing yet dates it somewhat. Similarly there are references to daily life and women's lowly state of the time that are quaint at best. Also I was looking for something that had a heavier grammatical bent, moreso than usage. I also am not in the newspaper business, so continual references to headlines and copy editors are not of much use to me.
All said, you must have this on your shelf, and you must read it, if you, like me, are editing for a living.
Any solid, respected tool such as this one earns it's cost the first time you can finally go after that PITA contributor who always thinks he/she can one-up you yet again in usage.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful for students.......2005-09-21

As advisor to a school newspaper staff, I recommended this marvelous book to the students because it made finding the precise word or the correct pronunciation fun. Bernstein was copy editor for the New York Times; he is a true expert, with a wonderful sense of humor. I have bought a copy of "The Careful Writer" for each of five grandchildren as they were setting off to college, and now routinely give the book as a high-school graduation present.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Love Language.......2003-02-28

I suppose one might argue that other usage guides are perhaps more thorough and instructive but for quality none outshines The Careful Writer. Theodore M. Bernstein created a gem for the ages when he assembled this collection of some 2,000 entries. I cannot imagine how often I've consulted this text to resolve some slippery usage issue or to refine my own text.

If you need help sorting out the use gender vs. sex, for instance, here you will find that gender is a grammatical term and not at all synonymous with sex. If you are not sure whether the context demands the use of fewer or less, Bernstein will set you straight. Did your supervisor remove all the commas you correctly inserted into a report? Check out the clear, precise explanation here.

Even as the standards of language erode, there are still many who strive to uphold correctness, precision, and nuance over fad and fashion. If you can find a copy of The Careful Writer, you will have a powerful tool to help preserve the legacy of our language.

Any copy editor, writer, broadcast journalist, or English professor who does not yet have a copy of Mr. Bernstein's stellar book is bereft of one of the essential compendiums of usage. It's well worth the effort to track down and purchase this book, for you will consult it with increasing frequency as you become aware of what a rich resource it is.

              5 out of 5 stars Super.......2002-09-19

This is, indeed, a wonderful book, just as the other reviewers have said. People who are interested in language think most books on grammar and usage are entertaining even if they're really dry as dust. That's just how we are. This book, however, is much more entertaining that those that are really dry as dust.

The format of this book is easier on the eyes than many heavier tomes on usage. The pages have only a single, full column with bold heads and plenty of white space.

Bernstein has answers that can't be found elsewhere. Here's an example. Suppose you've written a paper you hope will be published in a scholarly journal. You submit the paper to your department head. He or she sends it to a peer reviewer. The reviewer writes that your ideas are "interesting, if not innovative." Based on that comment your department head refuses to submit the paper for publication. But did the reviewer mean your ideas were interesting BUT not innovative, or did he or she mean your ideas were NOT ONLY interesting BUT ALSO innovative. I checked five reference books searching for an answer. Only Bernstein came through. According to Bernstein, only tone of voice could distinguish between the two meanings, and so the construction "[this], if not [that]" should not be used in writing because of its ambiguity.

              Book Description

The old adage, rules are made to be broken has never been as well defended as in MISS THISTLEBOTTOM'S HOBGOBLINS. Throughout the book, Bernstein asserts that we have been indoctrinated with English usage rules that lack flexibility and evoke fear, confusion and frustration in writers. There are times when splitting an infinitive or ending a sentence with a preposition makes sense. Through a series of one-sided correspondences with Bertha Thistlebottom, an archetypal grade school English teacher, Bernstein addresses the community of rule mongering sticklers who have tried to squeeze the English language into a set of inflexible rules and outmoded definitions that only serve to stifle its growth and paralyze writers. In addition to his letters to Miss Thistlebottom, there are scores of entries where Bernstein debunks the rules of yesteryear with wit and intelligence and illustrates how to write effectively--without the worry of hobgoblins.

5 out of 5 stars This book never grows old.......2007-08-29

I've been a fan of Miss Thistlebottom (and Mr. Bernstein) since 1972. I've given this book as a gift a half-dozen times over the years. I still reach for it every so often to settle a usage question. It is both invaluable, irrepressibly witty, and seemingly ageless. Before writing this review, I went back into the well-thumbed pages of this book to make sure it had not been left in the wake of the three and a half decades since it was written. It stands as relevant as ever. A must-have for anyone who relishes the English language and takes joy in its quirks.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers of English.......2006-10-23

I've taught freshman composition in colleges and universities from Arizona to the Bronx for over 20 years, and this book is so much fun compared to the usual stuff you have to choose from. Bernstein was practically a comedian compared to the stiffs who write usage books these days -- eats shoots and leaves notwithstanding.

I recommend this book as a resource in any writing classroom -- it answers the kinds of questions students actually ask about language use. They don't want to know about freewriting and the rhetorical situation. They want to know how to use the language properly and they'd like to learn it from a writer who uses humor -- is this too much to ask? Bernstein didn't think so in 1971.

5 out of 5 stars On the mark as usual.......2006-01-27

One by one, Bernstein goes through the rules given to many people "in Eighth Grade" and demolishes them: "Never split an nfinitive," "Never end a sentence with a preposition," and so on. He also lists a great many words and phrases and disucsses their points of usage. His categories are "Witchcraft in Words," "Syntax Scarecrows," "Imps of Idioms," and "Spooks of Style." He discusses each case with both light humour precision of meaning.

Theodore M. Bernstein not only reviews shibboleths of English usage but also includes a response from his fictional Grade 8 teacher, Miss Thistlebottom, writing more in sorrow than in anger.

The encyclopedic "The Careful Writer" is my favourite of Bernstein's books, but this one is certainly worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars Useful and Funny.......2004-08-17

In Mrs. Thistlebottom's Hobgoblins, the author explores common misconceptions people have about English grammar rules. The title is a metaphor for all the English teachers who have taught their students that it is wrong to split an infinitive or end a sentence with a preposition. The author explores such myths in detail and explains how they came to be as well as why they are incorrect. The book is well-written, witty and informative.

                              4 out of 5 stars Small book--big value.......2007-01-17

A year with the Bible 2007 is an excellent guide for Bible study, if you use it properly. Don't expect to find commentary or devontionals. It provides a daily scripture selection, nothing more. It is an excellent guide for the mature Bible student who wants to keep a daily journal of readings, along his/her own thoughts and prayers on the readings. It is well balanced between New Testament and Old Testament readings and puts the user in several different Bible books each week.

It is especially useful to members of mainline protestant denominations, such as Methodists, who follow the Episcopal Lectionary. All of the lectionary scriptures for the week are included, so that the user will read the scripture for the Sunday sermon in the preceding week. There are also some special prayers for various occassions at the end of the book. It is a huge bargain at less than a dollar a book.
