The Only One - could be more accurate though.......2006-06-14
This book is the only one available that describes Australia's national parks from a wildlife-watching point of view - other guides available in Australia concentrate on scenic spots and facilities for holidaymakers.
As such, I found it invaluable in pointing out which parks to visit to see a good cross-section of the continent's unique wildlife, and where to try and spot any particular species.
It describes both parks and selected species of Australian wildlife very attractively, with colour illustrations and inspiring text.
Now for the shortcomings:
The information given often turned out to be wishful thinking, making local park rangers laugh.
Just to give two examples: this book claims common wombats are "abundant" in Giraween National Park of Queensland while rangers there said they were so rare they have only seen one in 10 years; it also claims koalas are "common" in Royal NP near Sydney when in fact they are extinct there. And these are two very popular, frequently visited parks!
In general, the book tends to make seeing much of Australia's unique wildlife sound much easier than it actually is.
My other complaint would be that there is almost no practical information of the sort generally provided by other Lonely Planet guides in this book: no information on public transport [hasn't everyone got a car? ;-)], and none on the costs of accomodation or tours.
Then again, since as I said it is the only guide of its kind to watching wildlife in Australia, anyone interested in the topic is well advised to buy a copy. Just don't put too much trust into its accuracy - something that will hopefully improve in a next edition...
Great book for tourists.......2006-03-19
This is a great book for someone touring Australia. I would have given five stars had the been more parks listed.
The Only Guide Of Its Kind On Australian Wildlife.......2003-03-28
As a wildlife photographer I was very keen to find out where were the easiest places in Australia to see wildlife. This was the only book I have been able to find of this kind. The guide lists the best locations to see wildlife by state, often with very specific details. It also provides a brief description of some of Australia's most popular wildlife and what are the hotspots for viewing that particular species. This guide is not designed to give detailed information on wildlife behavior or physical makeup, it is designed to tell you where you can see wildlife and it does that brilliantly!!
Book Description
A celebration in full colour of Madagascar's wildlife. Key parks and reserves, features on evolution, camouflage, wildlife at night, conservation, wildlife watching and photography.

I Need Another!!.......2007-10-13
Fabulous, novice handbook! Great photographs with basic but very purposeful text. My only problem is the owner of the "hotel" in Andisibe, down the street from the main restaurant, enjoyed the book so much I felt compelled to give it to him as a gift!
Good but not grate.......2007-10-11
What it lacks is maps where to find each animal. Layout of the book is a little bit confusing (pictures are put on pages in chaotic manner) but otherwise a good book. It does what is supposed to: inform about different animals species, not only mammals. There is nothing better on the market right now.
Beautiful but Basic Overview.......2007-06-01
This book is certainly very pretty, with excellent photographs.
It is also thin and light-weight, and does cover a little bit of everything: habitats, recommended sites to visit, mammals, birds, reptiles and insects.
As such, it is an inspiring read, and probably the best single-volume book to carry for those who only have a superficial interest in Madagadcar's unique wildlife.
However, for more serious naturalists the information it offers is far too limited. Even mammals, the best detailed group, are only discussed down to genus level, neither mentioning nor illustrating all or even most species. Birds receive a token coverage of 10 pages, and reptiles fare little better.
Even the descriptions of nature reserves can be found in the more recent, excellent and complete field guides like the Mammals of Madagascar: A Complete Guide which actually tells you where to spot every single species separately, and the similarly brilliant Birds of the Indian Ocean Islands which not only covers all the birds of Madagascar, but those of neighbouring islands too, along with recommended birdwatching sites. Fans of herpetofauna should try and get hold of A Field Guide to the Amphibians & Reptiles of Madagascar.
If you buy any of the above field guides, you will find this book a waste of money - I did.
Very helpful.......2005-09-24
I am planning a trip to Madagascar and found this book a very helpful review of the various parks in the country. The photos are excellent and the discussion of the various mammals are readable but provide enough information to be interesting. This is not a technical book on either mammals or ecosystems, but is a good review of both. Perhaps I was looking for too much from this book, but I would have liked more maps and a bit more guidance on how to combine trips to different ecosystems in one trip. I combine it with the Lonely Planet and can cobble together the information, but it requires quite a bit of work. I also liked the sections on reptiles and insects - many books neglect the little creatures, which can be far more interesting than mammals in some ecosystems. Overall highly recommended.
Terrific!.......2004-08-02
Took this book along with me to Madagascar & was very glad I did. I was able to identify many lemur species I came upon throughout the country from the beautiful, close-up photographs in this book. The descriptive of each species is written in layman's terminology along with scientific names for the more biologically erudite. This really is a terrific book.

Review - Probably MoreThan You Want To Know About Fishes Of The Pacific Coast.......2006-02-26
This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to learn about common fish local to the California area. Its a scientifically structured field guide chaulked full of quips and funny little anecdotes. So if you want a good laugh while learning a huge volume of information (even the meaning of each fishes scientific name!), then i suggest you get this book. Dont forget to read the other information in this book like the 'preface' and even the copyright page. Youll never know where youll find the next laugh in this book.
I have worked briefly in Milton Love's lab personally and he is even funnier in person. He is one of the few people ive had the chance to meet whom after i walk away laughing i realized that i actually learned more than i did in a regular class. He knows an enormous amount of knowledge about fishes which is why i also feel this book has merit. Plus he references Ted Pietcsh, who if you have read the news discovered the world's smallest fish as released in January 2006.
Fish are Funny!.......2003-03-15
Without a doubt, the funniest taxonomic work on Ichthyology you will ever come across- and extremely and extensively informative to boot. Even the preface is a delight to read, where Love discusses the intelligence of fish (stupider than the stupidest mouse to ever live), if fish sleep, how their names relate to Communism, if they will harm us emotionally, and Love's relative intelligence when compared to other marine biologists. Then he goes through, fish by fish, all the main species off the Pacific Coast, from BC to SoCal. (If you're looking for fish from the Gulf of Alaska, you will be disappointed.) He begins with Myxini and Petromyzone, moves to Chondrichthyes, and then onto Osteichthyes. (Hagfish, Lampreys, Sharks and Rays, and Bony Fish- for fish are actually four different creatures, as separate from each other as Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, and Mammals are from each other.) Each section looks at the identifying characteristics, distribution, anatomy, commercial fishery, and extra tidbits, still with that trademark humor. And then there's a bit of the parasitic at the tail end of the book. Perhaps my favorite line: 'Your average hagfish can take a bucket full of water and almost solidify it with slime in a few minutes. (I don't know about you, but that makes me proud to be American.)'
Buy this book........1998-07-21
If you have any interest at all in the fishes of the Pacific Coast, this is THE book. I recommend it to the students in my Marine Biology class as one of the most accurate and fun (!) works they will find. The information is up there with the classics by David Starr Jordan, whose books are now collectables. Dr. Love, who is legendary in the world of Fisheries for his research and publications, has added his distinct sense of humor to the usually dry descriptions of fishes. If you are interested in Marine Biology of Fishes you need this book.

AMAZING!!.......2007-07-19
I am about to enter my second semester of Spanish in college and I think this book is simply amazing!! I love the way that it explains Spanish words, vocabulary, and grammar in a way that is easy for people who never had Spanish before to understand the language and a refresher for people who had Spanish in high school, but had forgot some basic words, vocabulary, or concepts. Anyway, each chapter does focus on a small portion of a Spanish-speaking country, but that what makes the book interesting!! It allows each student to grasp information about each particular country, enabling each person to be exposed to each country's culture. The book cannot talk about every single little detail within a particular country. If the student is interested in learning more about the country, he/she can go on the Internet and find more information about it. Personally, I love this book and think it is an excellent source for anyone taking Spanish in college.
Not recommended.......2006-08-29
I have been teaching with this book for 2 years and the more familiar I am with it the less I like it and the more mistakes I find on it. It was not chosen by me and I hope we'll change it soon. The textbook and workbook have plenty of mistakes even though it is a second edition.
This book claims to cover cultural elements from most Spanish speaking countries but it only sets each chapter in a different country, with very little cultural information about each place. The "encuentro cultural" section is the only cultural information in the book (apart from the video section) and most times is inaccurate or just plain boring or not interesting at all. Another problem is that many of the communication exercises are not communicative at all and not very involving for the students. Finally, I think that a book which costs more than $100 should, at least, have more pictures and color pages and it should try to make learning a language a more rewarding and fun experience.

Too Expensive .......2006-05-31
Why do people or instructors enforce there students to get this item when it is very very expensive and not cheap at all and by the time taxes and shipping and handling is added it would be almost the same price as a bookstore price without the taxes or shipping and handling
not worth it.......2005-10-09
This product is way too expensive and very useless for people who can study straight from the book. This "tool" is a method for the producer to make it impossible for students to share books or buy used books. I hope people stop forcing students to buy this useless access code.

Book Description
Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader offers in-depth portraits of North Koreas two ruthless and bizarrely Orwellian leaders, Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il. Lifting North Koreas curtain of self-imposed isolation, this book will take readers inside a society that, to a Westerner, will appear to be from another planet. Subsisting on a diet short on food and long on lies, North Koreans have been indoctrinated from birth to follow unquestioningly a father-son team of megalomaniacs. Revised and expanded for the paperback edition, this fascinating, definitive history brings the reader right up to the present-day tensions. For as this book direly predicted, North Korea has a legitimate nuclear program and appears to be the greatest threat to the world today.

Fascinating reading.......2007-08-23
"Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader" is one of those books I knew that I should read, but was not quite ready to take on 800 plus pages of non-fiction.
That is until I started reading it. The knowledge and style of writing of the author has made what I expected to be another dull tome of non-fiction both fascinating and enjoyable.
I hope that Mr. Martin is planning a sequel. I will be standing in line.
David F. Canmpbell
Comprehensive and well-informed.......2007-07-15
Profiles of dictatorships are often memoirs of their victims or works of scholars with limited first-hand experience. Not so Bradley Martin's far-reaching profile of North Korea, which is probably unmatched in its variety of sources: numerous personal trips, exhaustively cross-checked defector accounts, and decades of research combine to form one of the few dense books on history and politics that might fairly qualify as a page-turner. A worthwhile purchase for anyone interested in the Asia's security situation or economic future, especially since North Korea sits at the crossroads of major powers like China, South Korea, and Japan.
Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About The DPRK.......2007-07-14
Bradley Martin's "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader" is absolutely outstanding. Simply put, this is everything you've ever wanted to know about the DPRK (and a lot of things you probably could have lived without knowing as well). The author presents the most detailed and objective (as objective as any individual can actually be) analysis of the Kim regime and North Korea that I have seen to date. To characterize Martin's scholarship as substantial would be a gross understatement. This is, from my perspective, the best and most comprehensive resource regarding North Korea currently available and should be required reading for anyone interested in the Hermit Kingdom.
Thorough, thorough, thorough.......2007-07-12
Everyone here has pretty much covered what the book is about. But it's so well-referenced - more than 100 pages of endnotes. There seemed to still be some aspects of North Korean life Mr. Martin was unable to access, but it's about as good as any Westerner will likely be able to do. The Kims are generally portrayed as crazy in the media at large, particularly Kim Jong-il. The book illustrates how, while both men were and are very flawed, they seemed to know exactly what they were doing. One is left with the feeling Kim Jong-Il isn't going anywhere, but after that is anyone's guess.
The perfect dictatorship.......2007-05-20
Bradley K. Martin's (BM) book is an excellent and rather detailed report on how North Korea works.
In his preface, the author reminds us of H.G. Wells' Time Machine and there especially the part where mankind has split into the Eloi and the Morlocks and how they control the Eloi. In Wells' book this process takes about 800,000 years. In North Korea this process was reduced to just over 50 years. The rest of the book explains how this transformation came about.
BM starts off with the biography of Kim Il-sung and there draws quite a bit on the dictator's own publications. He follows this up with the Korean War and Kim Il-sung's elimination of all rivals and establishment of a totalitarian state. He then goes through all the aspects of Korean society and economy. He also goes through the different classes in society, namely, those connected to the top leadership, those who are not and those who have an unclean spot in their past. One does get the impression that every other person fits into that latter category at least once during their lifetime.
There is also a fair bit on Kim Jong-il and his unpopularity. The author shows that it was Kim Il-sung who messed up the economy. Kim Jong-il is blamed for it because he surfaced officially around the time things started to go wrong. However, there is no need to shed any tears, Kim Jong-il is quite a screwy character in his own right. You can read that right through the whole book.
BM gathers all this information through his own trips to the country and through interviews with defectors. Using such information can be a touchy business, but I don't think the author is at risk here because of the large number of people he must have interviewed for this book (one notices that throughout the book). This should allow him to cross-reference information quite thoroughly.
BM also deals with the nuclear issue. He does support a negotiated settlement. In the book, he recounts the testimony of a defector as to what would be necessary to bring such a settlement about. This testimony struck me as if the US is expected to go the distance with North Korea reaping the benefits without any steps of its own apart from (maybe) dismantling its nuclear programme.
Finally, the author looks into the future. He recounts North Korea's economic liberalisation although I am dubious whether these small steps will lead anywhere useful. I agree with him that it is in the common interest in the region that North Korea continues to exist but I find a regime change inconceivable. There are testimonials from various defectors which seem to imply a lot of discontent, but the book as a whole gives the impression of North Korea being the perfect dictatorship, so that opposition could not organise itself in such a way to bring about a large scale uprising.
In the final pages, the author suggests to Kim Jong-il to change his regime into a Thai-style constitutional monarchy, but having read the book I doubt that the `dear leader' is capable of making such a transition.
I urge you to also read the footnotes because there is a lot of additional information in there.
This is excellent stuff. One note of caution though, it is at times a very chilling read.
