THE INDISPENSIBLE 2ND EDITION BEANIE GUIDE.......2006-07-21
Beanie Babies were one of the truly remarkable pop culture phenomena of the last 15 years. I can still remember the first time McDonald's offered the Teenie Beanies and my wife and I spent the better part of the weekend trying to track down as many of the little critters for our son as we could. Beanies, however, suffered the same fate as many other collectibles such as comic books and sports cards, two hobbies I was very familiar with. First, it quickly became driven by speculators trying to make a quick buck. Next, corporate greed too over as Ty began churning out more and more product and started to try and manufacture collectibles with special releases. Today, we go to garage sales and Flea Markets and see people dumping their Beanies, often for as little as a buck each.
Yet for its core collectors, those who got into it for the love, and not necessarily the promise of future value, Beanies are still around and viable. If you don't think there is still an active market out there for trading Beanies, just check out eBay. As I write this review there are over 21,000 auctions underway in the Ty category. The speculators have long since dropped out, prices have righted themselves, and Bangzoom has released the 2nd edition of their indispensable guide. The guide covers the Beanie scene right up through the beginning of 2006 and in its review of the marketplace it makes no bones about it...now is a great time to buy, but not such a great time to sell.
The book provides a history of Beanies and their hang tags. A picture of generation's unique tag is included in the book with notes on variations and changes. The book also lists several different Beanie related websites that feature news, accessory sales, trading posts, and other information. The book lists Beanies alphabetically, and lists their birth date, introduction date, retirement date (if applicable) and their hang tag poems. The generation(s) is also listed as well as a current price. But you'll find more than just Beanie Babies In the guide...it also covers Beanie Buddies, Kids, Boppers, Teenie Beanies, Jingle Beanies, Pluffies, Punkies, and more, over 1500 different TY items. The back provides a handy index and checklist.
While the craze of the mid-90's may be over, there are still millions of Beanie collectors and lovers out there and there is simply no better book on the Market than the Ty Beanies Tracker from Bangzoom.

Book Description
The Complete Tracker is a concise, thorough guide to the tracks, signs, and habits of North America's most popular species of wildlife. Readers learn the secrets of a master tracker, assembling a clear picture from tracks, scat, and other signs. Was it a dog or a wolf? Fox or coyote? Did it pass by yesterday or an hour ago? The Complete Tracker also teaches how to get close to animals - everything from bobcats to beavers, marmots to moose - by knowing the details of their habits and a master-tracker's tips on avoiding detection. Over eighty line drawings show tracks of forty-five different species of wildlife under a great variety of terrain conditions.

contains inaccurate information.......2007-01-15
Overall, it is somewhat an interesting read but, it contains false, misleading information through out the book. One example is that the author states on page 75 "Feral swine lack tusks (although some with mixed blood have them)". Domesticated and Feral hogs are both born with canine teeth (tusks). Farmers remove the canine teeth within a few days of birth so swine will not injure each other, their owners, or damage property. The crude drawings of scat (animal droppings) aren't very useful aids in identifying animals, color photos would be much more useful.
Shawn Wilson's review.......2007-01-08
I worked in Law Enforcement and in my particular law enforcement branch I use tracking everyday. I have personally met Mr. McDougall and have spent sometime with him in the woods during a private three-day tracking and survival class. Mr. McDougall is very knowledgable and lives to be near to nature. He owns several wolves and has overwelming knowledge in wildlife. I used to live in Michigan and it was a pleasure to meet and spend time learning from Mr. McDougall. I only wish that I still lived in the U.P. and could benefit from his knowledge, face-to-face, still further.

Opened my eyes to the world around me........2005-01-16
After reading McDougall's book, walking in the outdoors is a whole new (and much richer) experience for me. And that includes the local city park as much as anywhere else.
The book does a very good job of showing habitats, tracks and scat of different animals, as well as pictures of each animal (although I wouldn't have minded a few more pictures than what he has). He also includes stories from what he has observed himself and stories from others as well. This makes the book very readable - the story about the badgers by the side of the road on page 166 is especially hilarious.
There is interesting information about different species on almost every page. There is also a great amount of information about observing and tracking wildlife, including tips like wearing hats and avoiding perfumed or color-brightening laundry soaps.
This is really a very interesting book and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to open their eyes and see more of the world around them. It has something for the casual observer and for the serious hunter.
Informative & well written.......2004-08-15
This is the best tracking book I own. In fact, it's the best tracking resource I'm aware of (including web-based material). The author writes well, so the book is well organized and the information is presented clearly. The index is excellent -- much better than most books -- so it's easy to locate the info you need. The tracks are illustrated by drawings rather than photos, which I might have preferred, but the drawings are clear, and I suppose they illustrate key features better than most photos would. Best of all, this author really knows his stuff, and he writes about animals with passion and insight. As a result, this book is much more than a "track identification" manual. It provides serious -- but easy to read -- information about the animals whose tracks it covers. And the author has enriched the descriptions with interesting personal anecdotes about his own wildlife encounters. Finally, the author has included very helpful information about finding and observing animals in the wild. Highly recommended for people who enjoy wildlife observation.
Even Native Americans reference this book........2003-02-22
If you go to the Natural Resources Commission office of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians in Petoskey, Michigan, you'll find The Complete Tracker on their reference bookshelf. If it's good enough for a tribal biologist to use as a reference, this book is certainly good enough for me.

Finally a guide that makes sense!.......2005-06-22
There are so many how to books on weight loss that the brain begins to lose focus so the body never benefits. What these two individuals have done is write a guide that is easy to read, easy to use, and something that will benefit you forever.
The chapters help you identify your body type, determine your ideal body weight, decipher misleading food labels, and help you find the exercise plan that is right for you. The tables and worksheets included were fantastic, making it easy to see what you did right and what you need to correct the next time. The book is very positive recognizing that not everyone will lose weight the same way, helping you create an individual plan. Whatever "diet" you decide is the best for you, this book on it's own or in conjunction with another diet plan is a sure bet on success. No quick fixes here, but a truly educated way of learning about your body, the foods you eat, and the physical activity necessary to keep it all together.
Hidden (Nutrition) Secrets Revealed!.......2005-04-29
I am looking at Nutrition Labels now, thanks to this book.
I traded in the "Lite" crackers from the health food store (0% fiber and loaded with sodium) for the Whole Wheat ones with 12% fiber (and less salt).
And guess what? The high fiber ones made me feel fuller and so, I didn't need as many with my luncheon salad!

It works!.......2005-04-27
Weight Loss Tracker is a great book for those who are searching for a lifestyle change and ultimately, permanant weight loss. The authors of the text help readers to understand that there is no magic cure for taking off the pounds. Instead, readers learn that subtle changes in diet and consistent exercise habits can make all of the difference. In an age of gastric bypass, freeze-dried packaged foods, and food deprivation as ways to weight loss, this book is a welcome alternative.

ROCK HARD APPS IS A SEARCH LIGHT INTO THE COLLEGE PROCESS.......2007-06-27
Good information and advice for students who want to get into selective colleges. Really shows the
how-to of what we should not do; as well as what we should say on our applications. Rock Hard Apps...rocks!+++
This book got me into my college.......2005-12-20
This book got me into my (currently one of the top 10 in the nation) college. It provided the advice and the necessary attitude for me to get into the school of my dreams.
Using it, I really learned how to write an application that would maximize my strengths and minimize my weaknesses, and how to present myself to a college admissions department.
The principles in this book are valuable for anyone writing an application anywhere, but its greatest value is of course in college applications.
The important part is that the advice in this book was worth $30,000 to the parents who approached this counselor, but you can get this advice simply by buying the book. I think that the book is a better deal.
Your Guide to a Great Application!!.......2005-06-24
This is a letter I felt compelled to write to the author after reading her two fabulous, highly informative books. The Truth About Getting In and Rock Hard Apps give you the edge you need to succeed as a prospective college student.
Hi Katherine.
I just wanted to take the time to thank you for writing two terrific books. I recently purchased your book, The Truth About Getting In, and found it so engaging that I had to pick up Rock Hard Apps as well.
I am strongly considering applying early to Princeton and your books gave me added confidence. In fact, I just completed my "brag sheet." I am an only child, so my family does not have much experience with the college admissions process. Before reading your books, the process seemed overwhelming and daunting, but now, I know exactly what I have to do to put my best foot forward and distinguish myself from other applicants. It may sound corny, but the admissions process and formulation of my application now seem more like an adventure.
As I was reading your books, I felt as if I were sitting right next to you receiving a private consultation. While writing this email, I feel more as if I'm writing to a close friend than an accomplished college counselor. If you have the ability to make such a profound impact through your words, I can only imagine the impact you have on your students.
When I put your books down, I actually felt like I had gained an inside look into the college admissions process. You do not lie. You truly reveal the "truth about getting in." All other college books I've read seem superficial compared to yours. I will take what you have taught me and do my best to apply it to my Princeton application as I work on completing it this summer.
Once again, thank you. I hope I will be able to attain success in my endeavors with your wisdom behind me. I will keep you posted!
Good points, makes you feel dumb and poor reading it........2004-08-05
The book has very good points, points I applied to the 10-something drafts of my application. The book reflects the seriousness you should be taking with the application process because, well, think of how much you care about your #1 choice and your last choice to attend. Some of it is a tad obvious, yes. But she focuses your point-of-view to make yourself look good to the only person that matters in this process: the application reader. Most of the book is learning by example; she highlights three students of hers (that paid nearly $30K for her services) and showed them what they did. It mostly works. I wouldnt rave about this book but it does the trick. And I got into the best school on the planet for my major. So I would say by a stack of these types of books, including this one, and assemble your own guidelines from them. It puts your mind in the right places.
Outdated, but somewhat useful.......2004-06-24
I am rising high school senior, and read this book (along with others) to help me prepare for the college application process.
The book has a tendency to the melodramatic, emphasizing the college process as the supreme effort and focus of life. I take personal issue with some of the statements in the book, such as, "the college application is the most important document of one's life up to that point." (Personally I consider birth certificates and social security cards much more important). However, other points such as the emphasis on considering college while choosing your freshman year courses demonstrate a focus that borders on the obsessive and unhealthy. She makes a point about David Horowitz obtaining a 4 on a chemistry AP, but she decided not to take points off for that. She calls a 4 (which is the equivalent of a B in a college-level seminar) ordinary, and a 5 (a college A), excellent. I find this extreme comparison somewhat difficult to justify.
However, there are some useful aspects to the book, which can basically be summed up as don't blow off your application, it's important too. The most helpful section of the book is on the brag sheet, a rarely correctly done section, but other than that the main advice the book gives is to focus on the applicatiions and that no one is guaranteed a slot.
It should also be pointed out that this book is somewhat outdated now. The recent Supreme Court decision regarding the University of Michigan's affirmative action policy outlaws the points system, which is the total basis for evaluation of this book. Since then, colleges have been required to switch from this system, so this is now outdated in terms of its specific usefulness.
However, it's core idea is good (to focus on your application), and it does have useful information about the brag sheet.

Loads of Possibilities.......2007-10-12
I teach calligraphy and was looking for something to keep my beginner students going once they'd completed the course. This book is it. It gives samples of a hundred different fonts as well as clear instructions on how to create the letters. The spiral binding was a real plus as it lays flat on the work surface. If I get the chance to teach a Level II in Calligraphy this would be a book I could recommend.
A wonderful tool.......2007-08-27
This is an excellent reference book for the beginner or advanced calligrapher. The spiral binding is a wonderful feature allowing the book to stay open while you practice. The pages are heavy duty and full color. The samples are beautiful and the history of writing is fascinating. Even though this book is available at my local library, I will probably purchase a copy for my everyday use at home.
Great!.......2007-02-25
This is a great book for beginners. It has a great layout and is easy to understand.
The art of caligra[hy.......2007-01-06
I need already to be a calligrapher in order to enjoy this 100 alphabets. Only two pages are dedicated to each of them. It is not enough if youa have not practiced previously the art of writing.
Marvellous handbook!.......2006-05-08
I have dabbled with calligraphy and have several books myself, most of them are big and have beautiful pictures and present the same styles; Roman, Uncial, Italic and Gothic styles with some variations. I ordered this book because of the raving reviews and its low price and was greatly, pleasantly surprised!
Firstly: the book isn't big in size, it's actually about the size of a normal novel but had 256 pages. Secondly: it is spiral-bound which means it will stay flat and the spirals are inside the cover, safe from damage. And as the book doesn't take up much room on the table it's ideal to have around when you're working. Calligraphy equipment takes a lot of space. And thirdly: yes, there really are lots and lots of styles! I found beautiful, tempting styles with romantic names such as Luxeuil, Cancelleresca and Beneventan. There are two pages for every style, the alphabet is presented on the left page and basic structure on the right one. And many styles seem to include also such rare latters as German double-s, Swedish o (a with a little square on top) and Icelandic o with / over it.
I think this book works best for those who have already done some calligraphy, because it isn't as detailed when it comes to layout and other technical points as some of the books I have, the ones that have big pages and big pictures. But this is a very good book indeed for anyone interested - and look at the price! It's ridiculously low!!
