Book Description
Since its original publication in 1993, The Safari Companion has been the best field guide to observing and understanding the behavior of African mammals. An indispensable tool for naturalists traveling to Africa, this new edition has been revised to acknowledge the enthusiasm to those watching these magnificent animals at zoos and wildlife parks, and on film. The Safari Companion enables readers to recognize and interpret visible behavioral activities, such as courtship rituals, territorial marking, aggression, and care of young. Each account of over 80 species includes a behavioral table in which the unique actions of the hoofed mammals, carnivores, and primates are described for easy reference. In addition, useful maps show the major national boundaries, vegetation zones, and game parks relevant to the guide. The book includes an extensive glossary, as well as tips on wildlife photography, a list of organizations working to protect African wildlife, and advice on where and when to see the animals.

Well Written, by and Expert.......2007-07-19
I just returned from Tanzania, and used this book while on Safari in Serengetti, Ngorongoro crater, Lake Manyara, and Tarangire.
The main strength of the book is the high level overview given to game viewing in the beginning and at the beginning of each animal section. Without some background in behavioral biology it is tough to watch the animals and find it interesting for too long. After reading the opening to this book I was able to take much more from watching big herds of grazers than the tourists I was with.
Richard Estes is clearly an expert in the field, but he writes in a fashion that is easy to understand for a layman. He also gives some personalization to his accounts, giving personal tips for a good game drive.
The only issue with the book is that it is sometimes difficult to match the behavior of the animals in the field to the book in the limited time that is available on safari, so I would suggest that anyone interested read the sections about the animals they expect to see before the safari, and have those pages marked for reference during the game drive.
Excellent Safari Companion.......2007-03-08
This book was an engrossing and wonderful read as we undertook the Safari.
It provided insight into the behavior and special characteristics of each animal that we saw, and made the sightings much more interesting than just the identification of each species.
Recommended highly!
In my experience, this isn't very useful.......2007-02-26
I've been to Tanzania's national parks twice, and watched a lot of game in both the popular and the less-crowded parks. Estes came with me the first time, based on my interest in the animals and reviewers' comments found here; and this last time I took along the (copied) pages for a dozen or so animals (zebras, elephants, wildebeest, giraffes, etc).
His work is certainly interesting and I fully expected it would be a useful Safari Companion. But it hasn't lived up to expectations.
I know I've been fortunate to have guides who were very knowledgable: getting us into interesting situations, pointing out behavior and being able to answer lots of questions. In the evening, though, I've often checked to see what Estes might have to say about what we'd seen; and, typically, I didn't learn anything new. That, by itself, doesn't justify leaving Estes behind. But with few exceptions, fairly careful reading of Estes beforehand didn't prepared me to "see" behavior that might otherwise have been missed over the course of 5 weeks of game watching. I'm certain it's not that the behavior Estes describes doesn't occur; it's just that we tourists rarely have the opportunity to observe animals for long enough periods for it to happen!
After my second trip, I got a copy of "The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals" and I might take it along next time as a close substitute for Estes. For very easy identification of the common animals and birds of East Africa, however, I'll continue to rely on Withers and Hosking, "Wildlife of East Africa" in preference to the "National Audubon Society Field Guide to ..." (which I also own).
Not for the average safari .......2007-01-09
This is a great book for people that want to know about all the variations of antelope, birds etc. If you're looking to go on your first safari and will be amazed by the sight of your first lion, this book is overkill for you.
If you're well educated on animal species, this is a good book for you.
The Safari Companion.......2006-08-21
Excellent safari companion showing various animals and describing them, their habitat, etc. Recommended for anyone going on safari.

Book Description
This textbook is intended to teach Modern Standard Arabic at the university level to speakers of English. The text presents Modern Standard Arabic functionally, but also instructs the student by way of an engaging storyline that presents Arabic culture in a contemporary setting. Designed for use in the classroom, the text would also work very well for the self-learner. Alosh uses state of the art language acquisition theory.

for a solid understanding of Arabic.......2007-04-03
I have been tutoring Arabic for 5 years (thearabictutor@gmail.com) & this is the best book I found to be the text book for my students. My students love my lessons & this book is a big part of the good experience.
it does not run over the material, it goes with you step by step, I do not know how Arabic would be learnt without a teacher, it is not like studying French if you know English..the difference starts in the Alphabet (writing & pronunciation) & grows more in grammar. So if you are looking for a gimmick book that will teach you to say parrot's "good morning" & "good night" & "have a nice day" then this is not the book...this is a serious, carefully planned, aiming at well-educated level of understanding & ability to handle this beautiful poetic language.
for those who says it won't help you learn on your own: Arabic is one of the hardest languages to learn, & it is an Afro-Asiatic language so if your 1st language is Indu-European then do not blame the book, & the book is not full of misspelling, probably you were not understanding the language enough to know what you are reading!
for those who do not like the book because of politics: the book is not political, it is a language book, but of course it will call Palestine by its native people given name & by the name Arab call it because it is teaching you Arabic in context! in this book you will follow some Arab students correspondances with their family & friends, & it will give you a background of the culture.
They needed an editor.......2007-03-30
This is a terrible book. As the other reviewers have said, it's filled with typos, misspellings (in Arabic!), and is completely disorganized. The resolution of the pictures is so bad the pages look photocopied. Most importantly though, it's impossible to learn on your own. You need a teacher's help deciphering what they're talking about. And do you really need to know the word for differential calculus? I'm suprised Yale University Press put out something of such low quality.
Mediocre.......2006-08-04
As other reviewers have pointed out, this book is generally mediocre. It teaches you think in a piece-meal, unsystematic fashion...which oftentimes can be a good thing, but here proves to be disorienting and uninstructive. Not only that, but as others have pointed out, at every step it pushes a dopey, anti-Israel political agenda. This book is a joke, botch intellectually and politically.
You can, of course, learn something from it, but avoid it if possible.
Imcomplete.......2006-07-24
The CD's which are required as a part of our class are not part of this book as they would be if ordered through the university bookstore.
Better books in terms of happiness level.......2005-12-20
Uningaging. Not for self study. Heavy to the point of being inconvenient to bring home on most days when my backpack is heavy to start with, which has discouraged me from studying as much as I would like. Not fabulous in my opinion. Doesn't make me a happy lil Arabic student.

They can't make seats either........2007-09-15
Perhaps Harley is going to publish an after-market book to correct all of the flaws in this book. Probably in chrome. I originally bought the book hoping to do some resarch on historic color schemes for a new bike, and in that quest I found the book to be quite valuable. Beyond that I found it to be curious that the book was a square format and all of Harley's bike are a horizontal format, so that every beauty shot of the bikes is printed across a gutter. You never get to see a bike in full. It's maddening. That being said, the history of the company and the culture is wonderful and inspiring. The shots from the archives are very well done and the tone of voice is very engaging. I just wanted to see the bikes. It's just like Harley's seats, good looking but kind of uncomfortable.
Nothing like a Harley.......2007-09-05
This book is very informative for the avid Harley lover!! This book would help you make an informative decision on which bike fits your lifestyle!! It is a great book to just pick up and flip thru the pages over and over again!!

My son loved this book !.......2007-06-08
My son has been a "biking enthusiast" and rider for years. He is currently rebuilding an old Harley w/restored parts. I'm scared of cycles and just stay away from them, but I even have to admit that this bike is beautiful !! He had a heart atack a few months ago and I ordered the 100 Years of Harley Davidson because I knew he would enjoy it while recouperating. He DEFINITELY did !! He's back at work -- but says he is still picking it up and re-reading or just flipping through it. It is such a nice book !! If you have a "biker" in your life or you are one yourself, either give it for a gift or enjoy it yourself !!
A Must-Read for Bikers!.......2007-01-09
this is a great coffee table book - not too big, not too small. i actually bought this book as a gift for my boss, as he is a huge harley davidson fan and has a fatboy harley himself. he really liked it! the pics. and the history in this book is awesome.
The history of Harley-Davidson, from one of the family.......2005-12-30
William G. Davidson, or as he is affectionatly known, Willie G., gives an insiders view of the history and near demise of an American institution. I drank the Harley Kool-Aide years ago, but it was interesting to get another viewpoint on the Motor Company. The historical pictures are fantastic, especially the old hill climb photos. This is a must have for any Harley owner, and a gotta have for bikers in general. Be forwarned, you will also drink the Kool-Aide if you haven't already!
Ride Free, Willie G.!

Better than a cookbook--.......2007-02-20
This book is much more than a cookbook! It evokes the feel of a walk down a tree-lined street of yesteryear. Filled with sepia toned images and intriguing narrative, it is a book to savor. It reads like a personal glimpse into the lives of the Harley and Davidson families and chronicles the lifelong friendship of William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson.
The book emphasizes the fact that Harley Davidson Motor Company was indeed a family affair, only twice as good with two families of friends. Images of family always include food and the Harley's and Davidson's are no different. Two granddaughters, one of Harley (Margo Manning) and one of Davidson (Carol Lange), compiled this collection.
With categories such as "Kick Starters," "On the Course and On the Trail," and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mixology," the volume contains recipes for all types of food. Manning and her cousin John Harley traced Harley family ancestry to Littleport, England and farther back to Bavaria. Bavarian recipes handed down through the family dot the pages as well as a number of Carol and Margo's moms' recipes that reek of 50's cocktail parties and dinner parties.
With recipes such as Curried Artichoke Rice Salad, Comfort Casserole and After-the-Ride Punch, there is something here to please every palate. On a personal note, I had sworn off cookbooks as my collection had taken over my home. I had to break my rule and get this one as much for the feel and the story as for the fabulous food!
Good History Lesson.......2007-01-15
I bought this for my husband, being a Harley fan, he loved all the old facts and actual pictures of the Harley and Davidson Families. It makes for a good history lesson. The recipes are pretty good too, but if your someone who needs pictures. There aren't any pictures of the recipes.
Cookouts & Family.......2006-04-02
This book gets you excited about cooking again! It has great recipies in several catagories such as "Kick Starters: Treats to grease your bearings and get your motors running" and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Mixology: Specialty drinks and beverages with a splash of history". All of it revolving around family was great and with summertime right around the corner, cookouts are too! The book even included the family trees of the Harley and the Davidson families. It was an inspiration to gather the family and make our own family history cookbook; that way we never forget where that awesome Banana Pudding came from or how to make grandma's famous Thanksgiving stuffing.
More than a cookbook!.......2005-03-17
The graphic design of this book is fantastic! The schematics of Harley parts, as well as photos of the Harleys and Davidsons make this book a must have for lovers of good design, good food and good stories. I'm happy to see the women of these families
honored. A must have for any cookbook collection!
"Harley and Davidson Family Recipes" Hit the Spot!.......2005-01-20
As a native Milwaukeean I am always keen for hometown news, and got a real kick out of all the national coverage awarded the Harley-Davidson 100th Anniversary festivities; some kind soul even sent me a copy of "Harley and Davidson Family Recipes." Sadly, I let this palatable little gem of a book sit on the shelf far too long before I gave it a serious look.
Inside "Harley and Davidson Family Recipes" I found -- well, just what the cover promises -- a trove of personal family photos and memories, plus dozens and dozens of genuine family recipes -- some twists on familiar dishes and some a bit more on the exotic side (like the watermelon salad with feta cheese -- sounds funny but tastes great!). My favorite, so far, is the roasted red bell pepper soup.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in real family cooking, and for any Harley-Davidson devotee or motorcycle enthusiast, for its personal glimpse into the day-to-day life of its founding families. Like some of the recipies inside, food and motorcycles may sound like an unusual combination -- but trust me, it works!
Book Description
100 YEARS OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON ADVERTISING takes the reader through a century of the premier motorcycle company's witty and eye-catching print advertisements. The colorful and sometimes provocative ads reflect the creative spirit and the unique culture of Harley-Davidson--and America--over the last century. The book revisits famous campaigns, laid out decade by decade, from the "Gee Dad! Buy me a Harley-Davidson" campaign of the 1920s to "I Am Woman. Hear Me Roar" in the '80s, showing how Harley-Davidson has remained in tune with the times--and often ahead of its time. The perfect companion to Willie G. Davidson's 100 Years of Harley-Davidson, this book will become an instant collector's item.
Book Description
This visually dynamic celebration of Harley-Davidson's first century of motorcycles includes a history of the company, profiles of the most significant motorcycles, and a 'lifestyle' look at Harley-Davidson's appeal and role in popular culture. Each section is illustrated with historical photos, memorabilia, and studio photography of the bikes. Also included is a detailed eight-page timeline covering key events.
