2.5 stars - an update of a classic, but buyer beware.......2005-02-20

This is a wonderful reference. But when I got hold of this latest edition of the Rat Nervous System, I was surprised and very disappointed to find that the chapter on the amygdala was referencing figures in the 2nd edition, rather than reprinting them here. For me, it meant the trouble of getting both editions through interlibrary loan. But if I had bought this latest edition, for this price, I would have been very upset to find essential figures missing.

It depends on your needs. I'm learning to parcellate the amygdala and need access to good figures to do so. I'm sure the editors had to make difficult decisions, given the weight and humongousness of this book, but if you're thinking of getting it as a practical reference tool, preview it in a library first to make sure it hasn't cut out anything you need from earlier editions. Otherwise, what a rip off.

Not good enough to cost this much!!!.......2004-09-18

Consider the following: if you buy four copies of this book you will have spent ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS. It better be high quality: great editing, beatiful figures, great writing, great references.

Unfortunately, this book does not merit the ridiculous price tag. For one, they need to hire a good copy editor. The opening line of the preface is, "The study of the structure of the nervous is a key to understand its function." This is indiciative of a generally choppy, rushed, and infelicitious writing style that obviously resulted from lack of a good editor.

Some of the figures are great, but figures are inconsistent from chapter to chapter. Some look like they were made in Power Point in 4 minutes, some even look like they were made in the 1970s by photographing a photograph that had labels on it! You'd think, at $250 a pop, the publisher would have hired some professional scientific illustrators.

The book is indeed comprehensive, though, and each chapter has good reference lists. Go to your library and photocopy what you need. Maybe it is because I am a graduate student with no money, but I am insulted and disappointed that the publisher wants so much for such a sub-par book.

Most comprehensive book I know.......2001-08-07

The organization of this book, each structure having its own chapter, makes it easy to find information about any brain area. Authorities of each field contributed an introduction to the structure and a description of the morphology and activity of the cells, but then further elaborated on substructures.

Good book; a bit wordy.......2006-02-23

"Complete Idiot" may be off-putting to some, but this book does cover a lot about coaching children, and basketball. It is especially helpful to those that lack experience working with kids' teams. I found it a little light on comprehensive basketball basics, but the history was interesting. Haven't checked out completing books, so I don't know how it compares to others in the marketplace.

Essential for Argument Presentation.......2007-03-02

Presented in textbook fashion, WRITING ARGUMENTS: A RHETORIC WITH READINGS, doesn't exactly make for compelling reading, but is certainly a critical source for argumentation documents. Author's Ramage, Bean and Johnson guide the reader through the process both deliberately and succinctly, covering every aspect of argument presentation, beginning with definition through source documentation.

Mine is an older edition and the technology aspect is dated, but nonetheless, I turn often to this book to guide me through argument preparation. Though certainly intended for classroom study, this book is also useful outside the classroom. I have prepared a fair number of arguments for political presentation and have found this to be a useful volume.

Thoughtful, articulate, and readable rhetoric. .......2004-11-18

"Writing Arguments" shines like a beacon in the dark and murky waters of composition textbooks. Although some have critiqued it for its "passive" approach, I support both the approach and the layout as the best way I've found to approach basic argumentation. A solid understanding of audience (in particular) is vital for successful writing, and it's also something inexperienced, self-focused writers often lack.

Rather than pushing a "win at all costs" or "go with your gut" victory-based approach to rhetoric, the authors promote rhetorical writing grounded in Perelman's audience concepts, Toulmin's warrants, and Aristotelian enthymeme. By encouraging students to locate common ground (warrants) between themselves and their real or imagined audience, this book sets them up to engage in rhetoric as participants in a broader civic culture. And this is the rhetoric that will ultimately equip them to survive in the real world--where knowing what a client or an opponent wants and believes is critical to "winning" the argument in a lasting and productive way.

No theory or approach is perfect (not that I've found so far at least), and a rigid application of the Toulmin model or the schema as outlined in this book will inevitably bog down writers as they move into more advanced composition. But that, afterall, is why we teachers are there. By focusing students' attention on the basic principles in the book--audience awareness, orderliness, situational groundedness, etc.--rather than forcing them to memorize rules or endlessly construct Toulmin models, I may just be able to help my students develop a new respect for argumentation as discovery (and themselves as rhetors) in the public sphere. And if we can do that, maybe there's a little civil light in the civic culture tunnel after all.

Filippo Brunelleschi's design for the dome of the cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence remains one of the most towering achievements of Renaissance architecture. Just what I needed on the Dome in Florence.......2007-08-27

This slim volume contains a lot of detailed information - both on the construction of the dome, and on the politics and rivalries behind the scenes. It is well presented and makes for an absorbing read.
The drawings of the unique hoisting equipment developed by Brunelleschi showed that he was as much an engineer as an architect.
I'll be visiting the dome this fall and now have a wealth of information to make my tour more meaningfull.

A Thinker's Book.......2007-07-23

Some books are for cruising,easy reading with the mind in overdrive, even serious books like King's Judgement of Paris, the reading of which brought me to this book. Yes I know it should have been the other way around. I had picked this text up a few times in my bookstore strolls, but always was tempted elsewhere. Then I read that fine work on the birth of Impressionism and its Hercules like incunabula strangulation of the python of Beaux Arts . It was a wowser!! and I wanted a bit more of this author's breezy erudition. Kind of like a great graduate class with that perfect professor; so I went back and bought the "Dome." Well, it was no smoothie. Yes this earlier book has the artists achieving grand feats, there is the rivalry of big egos, there is even the conflict(inevitable) of creative minds mostly in agreement. But it does not have all the same zip as Paris. Maybe because with the passage of time the bits and pieces of these rivalries have been obscured , darkened like Michaelangelo's chapel by all the years smudges and wisps of smoke until when we clean them up, they no longer are what we have come to treasure. The physical difficulty, the inventiveness, the sheer bravado of construction at great height are a big part of this book. To me the tools are so many large ratchets and socket wrenches. Then too, there is the amor loci of architecture. How many copies of the Parthenon have we seen, and yet they are just not the Acropolis. So the Duomo. It is difficult to envision the redtiled Florentine skyline elsewhere. But the objects of Manet, Degas, Cezanne are transportable and have become loved items. Certainly the physical achievement of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Flowers far surpasses that of The Alba Madonna, but Raphael is after all with us and as has been said the near dear drives off the distant beloved. So I guess the subject cannot carry all the discussion of the mechanical wow. I am glad I took the course, learned a lot, but would be cautious in whom I would tell to just go ahead, you'll love it.

Can culture be thrilling?.......2007-06-27

I find books about engineering, art and architecture more interesting when they are written as cliff-hangers. 'Brunelleschi's Dome' by Ross King is one of them. As are his 'Michelangelo and the Pope's ceiling' and King's latest 'The Judgement of Paris'.
Superbly documented and written with great speed, they kept me reading instead of looking at the real thing. Coming back to the real things I find myself looking through different eyes!
If you like this type of reading, be sure to look for 'The Lighthouse Stevensons' by Bella Bathurst (HarperCollins, 1999) and 'St Peter's' by Keith Miller (Profile Books, 2007)!

a well researched and very readable account of a staggering masterpiece, which at the time was considered impossible to build and of its creation and creator.

I often give a copy of this book to friends planning a trip to Italy... A quick read and a marvelous story about the intrigue...everything about renaissance Italy was an intrigue!... and history surrounding the building of the dome for il Duomo...I could almost feel Brunellschi climbing the stairs to the top dome with me...
This, and "Michaelangelo, The Popes Ceiling" also by Ross King, ought to be required reading for any student of history or anyone going to Italia... they breath life into Italian history.
